Novel Ni/Ce(Ti)ZrO2 Catalysts for Methane Dry Reforming Prepared in Supercritical Alcohol Media
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biogas, ceria–zirconia, dry reforming of methane, supercritical synthesis
To achieve a high activity and coking stability of nickel catalysts in dry reforming of methane, materials comprised of ceria−zirconia doped by Ti were investigated as supports. Ceria−zirconia supports doped with titanium were prepared either via the Pechini method or by synthesis in supercritical alcohol media. Ni-containing catalysts were prepared by two techniques: standard incipient wetness impregnation and one-pot synthesis. The catalytic reaction of DRM to synthesis gas was carried out in the 600−750 °C range over 5% wt. Ni/Ce(Ti)ZrO2. Dried and calcined supports and catalysts were characterized by physicochemical methods including N2 adsorption, XRD, Raman, H2-TPR, and HRTEM. Both preparation methods led to formation of solid solution with cubic fluorite-like structure, as well as after addition of Ti. Introduction of Ti should provide improved oxygen storage capacity and mobility of support oxygen. The highest activity was observed with the catalyst of 5% wt. Ni/Ce0.75Ti0.2Zr0.... [more]

An Adaptive Control Scheme for Variable Speed Wind Turbines Providing Frequency Regulation in Isolated Power Systems with Thermal Generation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: frequency control, isolated system, linear regression, power system stability, wind turbines
The lack of synchronous inertia, associated with the relevant penetration of variable speed wind turbines (VSWTs) into isolated power systems, has increased their vulnerability to strong frequency deviations. In fact, the activation of load shedding schemes is a common practice when an incident occurs, i.e., the outage of a conventional unit. Under this framework, wind power plants should actively contribute to frequency stability and grid reliability. However, the contribution of VSWTs to frequency regulation involves several drawbacks related to their efficiency and equipment wear due to electrical power requirements, rotational speed changes, and subsequently, shaft torque oscillations. As a result, wind energy producers are not usually willing to offer such frequency regulation. In this paper, a new control technique is proposed to optimize the frequency response of wind power plants after a power imbalanced situation. The proposed frequency controller depends on different power sy... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: LED lifetime modelling, LED multi-domain modelling, life testing, lifetime extrapolation and modelling of LEDs, LM-80, power LED measurement and simulation, reliability testing, Spice-like modelling of LEDs, TM-21
The advantages of light emitting diodes (LEDs) over previous light sources and their continuous spread in lighting applications is now indisputable. Still, proper modelling of their lifespan offers additional design possibilities, enhanced reliability, and additional energy-saving opportunities. Accurate and rapid multi-physics system level simulations could be performed in Spice compatible environments, revealing the optical, electrical and even the thermal operating parameters, provided, that the compact thermal model of the prevailing luminaire and the appropriate elapsed lifetime dependent multi-domain models of the applied LEDs are available. The work described in this article takes steps in this direction in by extending an existing multi-domain LED model in order to simulate the major effect of the elapsed operating time of LEDs used. Our approach is based on the LM-80-08 testing method, supplemented by additional specific thermal measurements. A detailed description of the TM-2... [more]

Recovery Technology of Bottom Coal in the Gob-Side Entry of Thick Coal Seam Based on Floor Heave Induced by Narrow Coal Pillar
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bottom coal recovery, gob-side entry, heave effect, narrow pillar, thick seam
To improve the resource recovery efficiency of mining face in thick coal seams, the correlation between deformation failure of bottom coal in the gob-side entry and coal pillar width was analyzed by theoretical analysis, numerical calculation, and similar simulation experiments. The results showed that, when the coal pillar was strong, with the decrease of pillar width, the failure depth of the bottom coal in the gob-side entry and floor heave increased. The deformation failure depth of the bottom coal in the entry was inversely related to the width of the coal pillar. The bottom coal was further fractured and dispersed under the action of tension, shear, and extrusion in the process of floor heave. Based on the floor heave induced by the narrow coal pillar, a recovery technique of the bottom coal with thick coal seams in the gob-side entry was developed. The width of the narrow pillar to be reserved was obtained by theoretical calculation and revised by numerical simulation; ultimatel... [more]

Maximizing Distributed Energy Resource Hosting Capacity of Power System in South Korea Using Integrated Feeder, Distribution, and Transmission System
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: distributed energy resource (DER), fast voltage stability index (FVSI), Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS)
Intermittent power generated from renewable distributed energy resource (DER) can create voltage stability problems in the system during peak power production in the low demand period. Thus, the existing standard for operation and management of the distribution system limits the penetration level of the DER and the amount of load in a power system. In this standard, the hosting capacity of the DER is limited to each feeder at a level where the voltage problem does not occur. South Korea applied this standard, thereby making it hard to achieve its DER target. However, by analyzing the voltage stability of an integrated system, the hosting capacity of DER can be increased. Therefore, in this study, the maximum hosting capacity of DER is determined by analyzing an integrated transmission and distribution system. Moreover, the fast voltage stability index (FVSI) is used to verify the determined hosting capacity of DER. For this, the existing interconnection standard of DER at a feeder, dis... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic conditions, energy retrofit, HeLLo, historic wall, hygrothermal measurement, hygrothermal simulation, in situ, non-destructive test
The hygrothermal behaviour of an internally insulated historic wall is still hard to predict, mainly because the physical characteristics of the materials composing the historic wall are unknown. In this study, the hygrothermal assessment of an internally thermal insulated masonry wall of an historic palace located in Ferrara, in Italy, is shown. In situ non-destructive monitoring method is combined with a hygrothermal simulation tool, aiming to better analyse and discuss future refurbishment scenarios. In this context, the original U-value of the wall (not refurbished) is decreased from 1.44 W/m2K to 0.26 W/m2K (10 cm stone wool). Under the site specific conditions of this wall, not reached by the sun or rain, it was verified that even in the absence of vapour barrier, no frost damage is likely to occur and the condensation risk is very limited. Authors proposed further discussion based on simulation. The results showed that the introduction of a second gypsum board to the studied tec... [more]

Extended Flow-Based Security Assessment for Real-Sized Transmission Network Planning
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: Big Data, distribution factors, flow-based procedure, N−1 security analysis, transmission network
The evolution of electric power systems involves several aspects, dealing with policy and economics as well as security issues. Moreover, due to the high variability of operating conditions, evolution scenarios have to be carefully defined. The aim of this paper is to propose a flow-based procedure for the preliminary security analysis of yearly network evolution scenarios at the real scale level. This procedure is based on hourly load and generation conditions given by market solutions, and exploits Power Transfer Distribution Factors and Line Outage Distribution Factors to determine N and N−1 conditions, properly accounting for possible islanding in the latter case. The analysis of overloads is carried out by dealing with big data analysis through statistic indicators, based on power system background, to draw out critical operating conditions and outages. The procedure is applied to a provisional model of a European high voltage network.

Distributed Switched Optimal Control of an Electric Vehicle
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distributed optimal control, power management, switched optimal control
Distributed control is investigated to solve an electric vehicle switched optimal control problem faster than centralized control without significant performance change. The powertrain includes a cooling system, supercapacitor, and two switched mode components: a battery with discharging and charging modes and an electric drive with motoring and generating modes. Control-oriented component power flow models are developed with mode and temperature dependence. Component specific power and thermal management optimization problems, subject to these models, require solution for overall powertrain management. The power management problem is switched, having discrete-valued mode selection variables. Both problems are solved in a distributed manner using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). An ADMM-based algorithm to solve the switched powertrain management problem is proposed; it (i) solves the embedded version of the switched problem that relaxes discrete mode switch value... [more]

Large-Eddy Simulation of ECN Spray A: Sensitivity Study on Modeling Assumptions
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: droplet breakup, droplet-laden, ECN, evaporation, Lagrangian particle tracking, large-eddy simulation, multiphase, OpenFOAM, spray modeling, subgrid scale, turbulence
In this study, various mixing and evaporation modeling assumptions typically considered for large-eddy simulation (LES) of the well-established Engine Combustion Network (ECN) Spray A are explored. A coupling between LES and Lagrangian particle tracking (LPT) is employed to simulate liquid n-dodecane spray injection into hot inert gaseous environment, wherein Lagrangian droplets are introduced from a small cylindrical injection volume while larger length scales within the nozzle diameter are resolved. This LES/LPT approach involves various modeling assumptions concerning the unresolved near-nozzle region, droplet breakup, and LES subgrid scales (SGS) in which their impact on common spray metrics is usually left unexplored despite frequent utilization. Here, multi-parametric analysis is performed on the effects of (i) cylindrical injection volume dimensions, (ii) secondary breakup model, particularly Kelvin−Helmholtz Rayleigh−Taylor (KHRT) against a no-breakup model approach, and (iii)... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: composition, concrete, representativeness, samples
One of the basic criteria for the representativeness of composite material samples is the similarity of the quantitative and qualitative composition of the material in the sample to that of the material it represents. The article presents the results of experimental research concerning the impact of the ratio of the minimum size of cubic concrete samples (lmin) to the maximum size of aggregate grain (Dmax). The content of the basic components of concrete, i.e., coarse aggregate, mortar, sand and cement paste, was analysed. The content of these components in the concrete sample was identified by means of analysis of the sample cross-sectional image, and then, compared with the contents resulting from the concrete mixture proportion. Cases where lmin/Dmax was between 2.38 and 12.5 were analysed. The results of the study indicate a moderate correlation between these two parameters. The largest discrepancies between the component contents of the sample and the controlled concrete were usua... [more]

How the Italian Residential Sector Could Contribute to Load Flexibility in Demand Response Activities: A Methodology for Residential Clustering and Developing a Flexibility Strategy
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Demand Response, Dwellings clustering, Flexible loads, Residential users
This work aims at exploring the potential contribution of the Italian residential sector in implementing load flexibility for Demand Response activities. In detail, by combining experimental and statistical approaches, a method to estimate the load profile of a dwelling cluster of 751 units has been presented. To do so, 14 dwelling archetypes have been defined and the algorithm to categorise the sample units has been built. Then, once the potential flexible loads for each archetype have been evaluated, a control strategy for applying load time shifting has been implemented. That strategy accounts for both the power demand profile and the hourly electricity price. Specifically, it has been assumed that end users access a pricing mechanism following the hourly trend of electricity economic value, which is traded day by day in the Italian spot market, instead of the current Time of Use (TOU) system. In such a way, it is possible to flatten the dwellings cluster profile, limiting undesired... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: anaerobic treatment, bioenergy, energy assessment, rural sanitation, sludge, Wastewater
Rural sanitation is still a challenge in developing countries, such as Brazil, where the majority population live with inadequate services, compromising public health and environmental safety. In this context, this study analyzed the demographic density of these rural agglomerations using secondary data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The goal was to identify the possibilities associated with using small-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors for sewage treatment, mainly focusing on biogas production and its conversion into energy for cooking, water heating and sludge sanitization. Results showed that most rural agglomerations lacking the appropriate sewage treatment were predominant from 500 to 1500 inhabitants in both northern and southern Brazilian regions. The thermal energy available in the biogas would be enough to sanitize the whole amount of sludge produced in the sewage treatment plants (STPs), producing biosolids for agricultura... [more]

Energy Storage for 1500 V Photovoltaic Systems: A Comparative Reliability Analysis of DC- and AC-Coupling
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: 1500 V photovoltaic (PV), cost-oriented design, Energy Storage, reliability
There is an increasing demand in integrating energy storage with photovoltaic (PV) systems to provide more smoothed power and enhance the grid-friendliness of solar PV systems. To integrate battery energy storage systems (BESS) to an utility-scale 1500 V PV system, one of the key design considerations is the basic architecture selection between DC- and AC-coupling. Hence, it is necessary to assess the reliability of the power conversion units, which are not only the key system components, but also represent the most reliability-critical parts, in order to ensure an efficient and reliable 1500 V PV-battery system. Thus, this paper investigates the BESS solutions of DC- and AC-coupled configurations for 1500 V PV systems with a comparative reliability analysis. The reliability analysis is carried out through a case study on a 160 kW/1500 V PV-system integrated DC- or AC-coupled BESS for PV power smoothing and ramp-rate regulation. Marginal Effect of R&D Investment and Impact of Market Reforms—An Empirical Analysis of Japanese Electric Power Companies
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: amp, D investment, Japanese electric power companies, marginal effect, market liberalization, R&
This study examines the marginal effect of Research and Development (R&D) investment and impacts of market liberalization on patenting activities of Japan’s nine incumbent electric power companies. We apply the negative binomial panel data regression model to a data set, comprising of companies from 1999 to 2018 and estimate four models. We find the following significant outcomes. First, retail market liberalization for high voltage consumers proves effective to increase patent applications. Second, R&D investment produces patent applications or a positive marginal effect of R&D on patenting is indicated. These results are consistent with previous findings in a way that deregulation to a certain extent facilitates innovation of firms but it may reverse the effect and decrease inventive activities after a threshold point. In addition, the results show a positive marginal effect of R&D investment on innovations; but the degree of the marginal effect declines with retail market liberaliza... [more]

A Novel Analytical Wake Model with a Cosine-Shaped Velocity Deficit
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical wake model, cosine-shaped velocity deficit, mass and momentum conservation, velocity prediction
A novel analytical model is proposed and validated in this paper to predict the velocity deficit in the wake downwind of a wind turbine. The model is derived by employing mass and momentum conservation and assuming a cosine-shaped distribution for the velocity deficit. In this model, a modified wake growth rate rather than a constant one is chosen to take into account the effects of the ambient turbulence and the mechanical turbulence generated. The model was tested against field observations, wind-tunnel measurements in different thrust operations and high-resolution large-eddy simulations (LES) for two aerodynamic roughness lengths. It was found that the normalized velocity deficit predicted by the proposed model shows good agreement with experimental and numerical data in terms of shape and magnitude in the far wake region ( x / d 0 > 3 ). Based on the proposed model, predictions from multiple views and at different locations are demonstrated to show the spatial distribution... [more]

Energy Management Strategies for Hybrid Electric Vehicles: Review, Classification, Comparison, and Outlook
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: driving cycle prediction, energy management strategies (EMSs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Optimization
Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) have been proven to be a promising solution to environmental pollution and fuel savings. The benefit of the solution is generally realized as the amount of fuel consumption saved, which by itself represents a challenge to develop the right energy management strategies (EMSs) for HEVs. Moreover, meeting the design requirements are essential for optimal power distribution at the price of conflicting objectives. To this end, a significant number of EMSs have been proposed in the literature, which require a categorization method to better classify the design and control contributions, with an emphasis on fuel economy, providing power demand, and real-time applicability. The presented review targets two main headlines: (a) offline EMSs wherein global optimization-based EMSs and rule-based EMSs are presented; and (b) online EMSs, under which instantaneous optimization-based EMSs, predictive EMSs, and learning-based EMSs are put forward. Eco-Efficient Value Creation of Residential Street Lighting Systems by Simultaneously Analysing the Value, the Costs and the Eco-Costs during the Design and Engineering Phase
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: eco-costs, eco-efficient value creation, EVC, EVR, street lighting system, TCO
In search of sustainable business models, product innovation must fulfil a double objective: the new product must have a higher (market) value, and at the same time a lower eco-burden. To achieve this objective, it is an imperative that the value, the total costs of ownership, and the eco-burden of a product are analysed at the beginning of the design process (idea generation and concept development). The design approach that supports such a design objective, is called Eco-efficient Value Creation (EVC). This approach is characterised by a two-dimensional representation: the eco-burden at the y-axis and the costs or the value at the x-axis. The value is either the Willingness to Pay or the market price. The eco-burden is expressed in eco-costs, a monetised single indicator in LCA (Life Cycle Assessment): an app for IOS and Android, and excel look-up tables at the internet, enable quick assessment of eco-costs. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: constructal design, metallic contact, solar cell, structure
Sunlight is a natural resource that can be harnessed by the photovoltaic conversion of sunlight into electricity-utilizing solar cells. The production of most common solar cells consists of a homojunction of a p-type and n-type silicon. The p—n junction is realized by the diffusion of impurities through one surface of the wafer. Silicon wafers have a typical dimension of 156 × 156 mm2 and a thickness of 0.15−0.2 mm. Groups of 50−100 solar cells are electrically connected and encapsulated to form a module. The required area for interconnection does not contribute to power generation, and the performance of larger area devices usually suffers from higher resistive losses. In the present work, a theoretical model of the geometric arrangement of the top contact metallic electrodes branched network in a photovoltaic cell is developed. The network structure of the electrodes is obtained from applying the constructal design methodology by the minimization of the overall resistance. As a resul... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, net output power, organic Rankine cycle, split-flow hot water
The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is widely used to recover industrial waste heat. For an ORC system using industrial waste hot water as a heat source, a novel hot water split-flow dual-pressure organic Rankine cycle (SFD-ORC) system is developed to improve the performance of the ORC. The maximum net power output was selected to compare three ORC systems, including basic ORC (B-ORC), conventional dual-pressure ORC (CD-ORC) and SFD-ORC. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used to optimize the parameters to search the maximum net power output of ORCs. The maximum net output power was taken as the standard of performance evaluation. The results show that, under the same hot water inlet temperature condition, the optimal hot water outlet temperature of B-ORC is much higher than that of CD-ORC and SFD-ORC, which indicates that less thermal energy could be utilized to convert to power in B-ORC. The optimal hot water temperature at the outlet of evaporator 1 in SFD-ORC is higher than that in CD-ORC, w... [more]
