Measurement of Energy Access Using Fuzzy Logic
Diego Seuret-Jimenez, Tiare Robles-Bonilla, Karla G. Cedano
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy access, energy use, fuzzy logic
This paper describes an innovative method to evaluate energy access in any of size population by applying fuzzy logic. The obtained results allow ranking regions of Mexico according to their overall energy access. The regions were determined by the country’s political division (32 states). The results presented herein are in close correspondence with other studies undertaken. This method is recommended because it is possible to use as an assessment tool due to its representativeness—that is, it poses a heuristic alternative to quantify the level of Energy Access in a particular region through qualitative data. It is also efficient and cost-effective in terms of computer resources. This is extremely important to public policy makers that require more accurate, faster and cheaper methodologies to assess energy access as an indicator of well-being.
A Study of Combustion Characteristics of Two Gasoline−Biodiesel Mixtures on RCEM Using Various Fuel Injection Pressures
Ardhika Setiawan, Bambang Wahono, Ocktaeck Lim
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, fuel injection pressure, Gasoline, GCI, RCEM
Experimental research was conducted on a rapid compression and expansion machine (RCEM) that has characteristics similar to a gasoline compression ignition (GCI) engine, using two gasoline−biodiesel (GB) blends—10% and 20% volume—with fuel injection pressures varying from 800 to 1400 bar. Biodiesel content lower than GB10 will result in misfires at fuel injection pressures of 800 bar and 1000 bar due to long ignition delays; this is why GB10 was the lowest biodiesel blend used in this experiment. The engine compression ratio was set at 16, with 1000 µs of injection duration and 12.5 degree before top dead center (BTDC). The results show that the GB20 had a shorter ignition delay than the GB10, and that increasing the injection pressure expedited the autoignition. The rate of heat release for both fuel mixes increased with increasing fuel injection pressure, although there was a degradation of heat release rate for the GB20 at the 1400-bar fuel injection rate due to retarded in-cylinder... C. Jiang, B. A. Fleck, M. G. Lipsett
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: erosive wear, impeller wear, pump performance, slurry pump
Slurry transport systems are often limited in run length by the life of the pump internals, especially the impeller. The present work investigated abrasive wear of the impeller of a Hayward Gordon XR2(7) Torus Recessed Impeller slurry pump in a flow loop. The stock stainless steel impeller was replaced by a set of plastic test impellers with the same nominal geometry, fabricated by additive manufacturing (3D printing). A parametric set of abrasive wear experiments was conducted at five pump rotational speeds and three solid concentrations of garnet slurry in a pipe flow loop. Pump performance tests were conducted using impellers with progressive wear conditions, to investigate how a worn impeller affects hydraulic power delivery. A parabolic fit was imposed to describe the relationship between head and flow rate, and an empirical model was proposed to predict the pump head with damaged impellers. When the rotational speed is high, the damaged impeller has a larger effect on the pump’s... [more]
EV Smart Charging with Advance Reservation Extension to the OCPP Standard
Simone Orcioni, Massimo Conti
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle, OCPP, recharge reservation, smart charging
An accurate management of the interactions among end user, electric vehicle, and charging station during recharge is fundamental for the diffusion of electric mobility. The paper proposes an extension of the Open Charge Point Protocol standard with the aim of including the user in the charging optimization process. The user negotiates with the central station a recharge reservation giving his/her preference and flexibility. The charging station management system provides different solutions based on user’s flexibility. This negotiation allows the optimization of the power grid management considering the user requests and constraints. The complete architecture has been designed, implemented on a web server and on a smartphone app, and tested. Results are reported in this work.
Total Cost of Ownership Model and Significant Cost Parameters for the Design of Electric Bus Systems
Anders Grauers, Sven Borén, Oscar Enerbäck
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: charging strategy, cost model, electric bus, public transport, Sustainability, TCO, total cost of ownership
Without experiences of electric buses, public transport authorities and bus operators have faced questions about how to implement them in a cost-effective way. Simple cost modelling cannot show how costs for different types of electric buses differ between different routes and timetables. Tools (e.g., HASTUS, PtMS, and optibus) which can analyse such details are complicated, time consuming to use, and provide insufficient insights into the mechanisms that influence the cost. This paper therefore proposes a method for how to calculate total cost of ownership, for different types of electric buses, in a way which can predict how the cost varies based on route and timetable. The method excludes factors which cause minor cost variations in an almost random manor, in order to better show the fundamental mechanisms influencing different costs. The method will help in finding ways to reduce the cost and help to define a few cases which deserve a deep analysis with more complete tools. Testing... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cascaded inverter, DC/AC converter, flying capacitor inverter, multilevel inverter, neutral point clamped inverter, PV systems, renewable energy systems, voltage-source
At present, renewable energies represent 25% of the global power generation capacity. The increase in clean energy facilities is mainly due to the high levels of pollution generated by the burning of fossil fuels to satisfy the growing electricity demand. The global capacity of generating electricity from solar energy has experienced a significant increase, reaching 505 GW in 2018. Today, multilevel inverters are used in PV systems to convert direct current into alternating current. However, the use of multilevel inverters in renewable energies applications presents different challenges; for example, grid-connected systems use a transformer to avoid the presence of leakage currents. The grid-connected systems must meet at least two international standards analyzed in this work: VDE 0126-1-1 and VDE-AR-N 4105, which establish a maximum leakage current of 300 mA and harmonic distortion maximum of 5%. Previously, DC/AC converters have been studied in different industrial applications. The... [more]

Chengxin Luo, Dongyuan Qiu, Manhao Lin, Bo Zhang
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: circuit model, multiple loads, parity–time symmetry, wireless power transfer
In the multi-load wireless power transfer (WPT) system, the output power and transfer efficiency will drop significantly with the change of distance between transmitter and receiver. Power distribution among multiple loads is also a major challenge. In order to solve these problems, a novel multi-load WPT system based on parity−time symmetry (PT-WPT) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the multi-load PT-WPT system is modeled based on the circuit model. Then, the transmission characteristics of the multi-load PT-WPT system are analyzed. It is found that constant output power with constant transfer efficiency can be maintained against the variation of coupling coefficient, and the power distribution relationship among loads is only related to the coupling coefficient. Further, power distribution under different coupling situations is analyzed in detail to meet different power demands. Finally, taking a dual-load PT-WPT system as an example, the system parameters are designed and the circ... [more]

Jingyue Wang, Zheng Qian, Jingyi Wang, Yan Pei
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analog approach, feed forward neural networks, neural network ensemble, persistence method, photovoltaic power forecasting
The common analog approach and ensemble methods in photovoltaic (PV) power forecasting are based on the forecasts from several numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. These may be not applicable to the very-short-term PV power forecasting, since forecasts based on NWP models are reliable in horizons longer than six hours. In this paper, a methodology for one-hour-ahead PV power forecasting is proposed. Instead of the NWP models, the persistence method is applied in the analog approach to produce meteorological forecasts. The historical data with meteorological predictions similar to the target forecast hour are identified to train the forecast model. Then, the feed forward neural networks (FNNs) act as the base predictors of the neural network ensemble method to replace the NWP-based PV power prediction methods. The forecast results produced by the FNNs are combined by the random forest (RF) algorithm. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated on a real grid-connected PV p... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: climate-change, energy scenarios, EPLANopt, multi-objective optimization, photovoltaics, Wind
The modeling of energy systems with high penetration of renewables is becoming more relevant due to environmental and security issues. Researchers need to support policy makers in the development of energy policies through results from simulating tools able to guide them. The EPLANopt model couples a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to EnergyPLAN simulation software to study the future best energy mix. In this study, EPLANopt is applied at country level to the Italian case study to assess the best configurations of the energy system in 2030. A scenario, the result of the optimization, is selected and compared to the Italian integrated energy and climate action plan scenario. It allows a further reduction of CO2 emissions equal to 10% at the same annual costs of the Italian integrated energy and climate action plan scenario. Both these results are then compared to climate change scenarios through the carbon budget indicator. This comparison shows the difficulties to meet the Paris... [more]

Keywords: maximum power point tracking (MPPT), non-uniform irradiance, offline, online, photovoltaic (PV) array, shading conditions, soft computing
Significant growth in solar photovoltaic (PV) installation has been observed during the last decade in standalone and grid-connected power generation systems. However, the PV system has a non-linear output characteristic because of weather intermittency, which tends to a substantial loss in overall system output. Thus, to optimize the output of the PV system, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques are used to track the global maximum power point (GMPP) and extract the maximum power from the PV system under different weather conditions with better precision. Since MPPT is an essential part of the PV system, to date, many MPPT methods have been developed by various researchers, each with unique features. A Google Scholar survey of the last five years (2015−2020) was performed to investigate the number of review articles published. It was found that overall, seventy-one review articles were published on different MPPT techniques; out of those, only four were on non-uniform solar i... [more]

Keywords: concentrating solar power, CSP, geographic information systems, potential assessment, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Solar Thermal, South Africa
Renewable Energy Technologies are rapidly gaining uptake in South Africa, already having more than 3900 MW operational wind, solar PV, Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) and biogas capacity. CSP has the potential to become a leading Renewable Energy Technology, as it is the only one inherently equipped with the facility for large-scale thermal energy storage for increased dispatchability. There are many studies that aim to determine the potential for CSP development in certain regions or countries. South Africa has a high solar irradiation resource by global standards, but few studies have been carried out to determine the potential for CSP. One such study was conducted in 2009, prior to any CSP plants having been built in South Africa. As part of a broader study to determine the impact of CSP on South Africa’s water resources, a geospatial approach was used to optimise this potential based on technological changes and improved spatial data. A tiered approach, using a comprehensive set of... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed generators, distribution transformers, electric vehicles, harmonic power flow, power quality
Harmonic currents of electric vehicle (EV) chargers could jeopardize the power quality of distribution systems and add to the transformer’s losses, thus degrading its lifetime. This paper assesses and mitigates the impacts of different EV chargers on distribution transformers and the voltage quality of distribution systems. The effect of state-of-charge (SOC) of the EV battery is considered through applying weighted arithmetic mean to accurately assess the impacts of EV harmonic currents on aging and losses of the EV interfacing transformer. The voltage quality of the IEEE 33-bus distribution system, supplying several EV parking lots, is also assessed at different charging levels using a fast-decoupled harmonic power flow. A new optimal harmonic power flow algorithm—that incorporates photovoltaic-based distribution generation units (DGs)—is developed to enhance the voltage quality of distribution systems, and elongate the lifetime of the substation transformer. The effectiveness of the... [more]

Keywords: Ansys FLUENT®, Computational Fluid Dynamics, energy demand, PCM, thermal energy storage
The development of thermal energy storage systems is a possible solution in the search for reductions in the difference between the global energy supply and demand. In this context, the ability of some materials, the so-called phase change materials (PCMs), to absorb and release large amounts of energy under specific periods and operating conditions has been verified. The applications of these materials are limited due to their low thermal conductivity, and thus, it is necessary to associate them with high-conductivity materials, such as metals, to make the control of energy absorption and release times possible. Bearing this in mind, this paper presents a numerical analysis of the melting process of a PCM into a triplex tube heat exchanger (TTHX) with finned copper tubes, which allowed for the heat transfer between a heating fluid (water) and the phase change material to power a liquid-desiccant air conditioning system. Through the analysis of the temperature fields, liquid fractions,... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial bee colony, frequency and duration method, integrated resource planning, limited energy units, probabilistic production cost equivalent load duration curve
In the generation of operating system planning, saving utility cost (SUC) is customarily implemented to attain the forecasted optimal economic benefits in a generating system associated with renewable energy integration. In this paper, an improved approach for the probabilistic peak-shaving technique (PPS) based on computational intelligence is proposed to increase the SUC value. Contrary to the dispatch processing of the PPS technique, which mainly relies on the dispatching of each limited energy unit in sequential order, a modified artificial bee colony with a new searching mechanism (MABC-NSM) is proposed. The SUC is originated from the summation of the Saving Energy Cost and Saving Expected Cycling Cost of the generating system. In addition, further investigation for obtaining the optimal value of the SUC is performed between the SUC determined directly and indirectly estimated by referring to the energy reduction of thermal units (ERTU). Comparisons were made using MABC-NSM and a... [more]

Keywords: fault size, inter-laminar fault, localized losses, thermal-electric coupling, thermographic measurement
Estimating the additional power losses caused by an inter-laminar short circuit in electromagnetic devices using thermal measurements depends on many parameters such as thermal conductivity, heat capacity, convective heat coefficient, and size of the fault points. This paper presents a method for estimating these parameters using experimental measurement and a numerical model. The surface temperature rise due to inter-laminar short circuit fault was obtained using an infrared camera. Based on the initial temperature rise method, the least square non-linear approximation technique was used to determine the best fitting parameters of the fault region from the numerical model. To validate the results obtained, the fault region temperature rise and the total loss of the experimental sample were compared with the numerical model using the obtained parameters for different current supply conditions. The study shows that surface temperature distribution can be used to estimate the inter-lamin... [more]

A new simulation library is developed on OMNeT++ to model faults in distribution systems. The proposed library makes it possible to calculate the status of lines and busbars from the point of view of a protection system, enabling the modeling of overcurrents, power outages and fault passage indicators. The library is applied to model a decentralized protection system based on the exchange of IEC 61850 Generic Object Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) messages between intelligent electronic devices responsible for the operation of circuit breakers and disconnectors. The time needed to secure and transmit GOOSE messages over the Internet is characterized and included in the model. Keywords: direct torque control, matrix converter, space vector modulation, torque performance improvement, torque tracking control
In asynchronous motor direct torque control systems, the power supply using the matrix converter can achieve the effect of direct torque control and also has the advantages of the matrix converter. Nonetheless, direct torque control still has drawbacks in terms of pulsation. In this paper, the characteristics of direct torque control method and its existing problems are analyzed in depth. In view of the shortcomings of torque ripple, an improved scheme of torque tracking control is proposed based on conventional control methods. On the basis of theoretical simulation, DSP and FPGA algorithms are designed respectively in C language and VHDL to implement the proposed control strategy. Finally, a highly integrated experimental platform of matrix converter has been developed to verify the proposed control strategy. The simulation and experimental results verify the correctness and effectiveness of the improved scheme.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: building energy use, localized weather data, Manhattan, urban building energy use model
Building sectors account for major energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in the US. While urban building energy-use modeling has been widely applied in many studies, limited studies have been conducted for Manhattan, New York City (NYC). Since the release of the new “80-by-50” law, the NYC government has committed to reducing carbon emissions by 80% by 2050; indeed, the government is facing a big challenge for reducing the energy use and carbon emissions. Therefore, understanding the building energy use of NYC with a high spatial and temporal resolution is essential for the government and local citizens in managing building energy use. This study quantified the building energy use of Manhattan in NYC with consideration of the local microclimate by integrating two popular modeling platforms, the Urban Weather Generator (UWG) and Urban Building Energy Modeling (UBEM). The research results suggest that (1) the largest building energy use is in central Manhattan, which is composed of lar... [more]

Keywords: EROI, small wind turbines (SWTs), wind resource assessment
In this paper, the technical and economic feasibility of integrating SWTs (Small Wind Turbines) into remote oil production sites are investigated. Compared to large turbines in onshore and offshore wind farms, SWTs are more suitable for individual power generations. A comprehensive approach based on wind energy assessment, wind power prediction, and economic analysis is then recommended, to evaluate how, where, and when small wind production recovery is achievable in oilfields. Firstly, wind resource in oilfields is critically assessed based on recorded meteorological data. Then, the wind power potential is numerically tested using specified wind turbines with density-corrected power curves. Later, estimations of annual costs and energy-saving are carried out before and after the installation of SWT via the LCOE (Levelized Cost of Electricity) and the EROI (Energy Return on Investment). The proposed methodology was tested against the Daqing oilfield, which is the largest onshore oilfie... [more]
