March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Batteries, Energy Storage, LCA, photovoltaic, smart grids, solar energy
This paper presents an environmental sustainability assessment of residential user-scale energy systems, named solar home systems, encompassing their construction, operation, and end of life. The methodology adopted is composed of three steps, namely a design phase, a simulation of the solar home systems’ performance and a life cycle assessment. The analysis aims to point out the main advantages, features, and challenges of lithium-ion batteries, considered as a benchmark, compared with other innovative devices. As the environmental sustainability of these systems is affected by the solar radiation intensity during the year, a sensitivity analysis is performed varying the latitude of the installation site in Europe. For each site, both isolated and grid-connected solar home systems have been compared considering also the national electricity mix. A general overview of the results shows that, regardless of the installation site, solid state nickel cobalt manganese and nickel cobalt alum... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: convolutional neural networks, deep learning, Machine Learning, recurrent neural networks, spatial-temporal wind forecasting
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) possess many positive qualities when it comes to spatial raster data. Translation invariance enables CNNs to detect features regardless of their position in the scene. However, in some domains, like geospatial, not all locations are exactly equal. In this work, we propose localized convolutional neural networks that enable convolutional architectures to learn local features in addition to the global ones. We investigate their instantiations in the form of learnable inputs, local weights, and a more general form. They can be added to any convolutional layers, easily end-to-end trained, introduce minimal additional complexity, and let CNNs retain most of their benefits to the extent that they are needed. In this work we address spatio-temporal prediction: test the effectiveness of our methods on a synthetic benchmark dataset and tackle three real-world wind prediction datasets. For one of them, we propose a method to spatially order the unordered data.... [more]
Efficient Production of Clean Power and Hydrogen Through Synergistic Integration of Chemical Looping Combustion and Reforming
Mohammed N. Khan, Schalk Cloete, Shahriar Amini
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, chemical looping combustion, energy penalty, Hydrogen, natural gas combined cycle, power plant
Chemical looping combustion (CLC) technology generates power while capturing CO2 inherently with no direct energy penalty. However, previous studies have shown significant energy penalties due to low turbine inlet temperature (TIT) relative to a standard natural gas combined cycle plant. The low TIT is limited by the oxygen carrier material used in the CLC process. Therefore, in the current study, an additional combustor is included downstream of the CLC air reactor to raise the TIT. The efficient production of clean hydrogen for firing the added combustor is key to the success of this strategy. Therefore, the highly efficient membrane-assisted chemical looping reforming (MA-CLR) technology was selected. Five different integrations between CLC and MA-CLR were investigated, capitalizing on the steam in the CLC fuel reactor outlet stream to achieve highly efficient reforming in MA-CLR. This integration reduced the energy penalty as low as 3.6%-points for power production only (case 2) an... [more]

Can Effects of Temperature on Two-Phase Gas/Oil-Relative Permeabilities in Porous Media Be Ignored? A Critical Analysis
Saket Kumar, Sajjad Esmaeili, Hemanta Sarma, Brij Maini
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: effect of temperature, flow in porous media, gas/liquid systems, relative permeability, thermal recovery method
Thermal recovery processes for heavy oil exploitation involve three-phase flow at elevated temperatures. The mathematical modeling of such processes necessitates the account of changes in the rock−fluid system’s flow behavior as the temperature rises. To this end, numerous studies on effects of the temperature on relative permeabilities have been reported in the literature. Compared to studies on the temperature effects on oil/water-relative permeabilities, studies (and hence, data) on gas/oil-relative permeabilities are limited. However, the role of temperature on both gas/oil and oil/water-relative permeabilities has been a topic of much discussion, contradiction and debate. The jury is still out, without a consensus, with several contradictory hypotheses, even for the limited number of studies on gas/oil-relative permeabilities. This study presents a critical analysis of studies on gas/oil-relative permeabilities as reported in the literature, and puts forward an undeniable argument... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), cable joint, cable screen, earthing/grounding system, quasi-dynamic simulation
The paper presents the possibility of using cable screen earthing current measurements for MV, single-core cable line monitoring. Cable screen earthing current measurement allows the condition of cable screen connections, degradation of earthing systems, and the earthing system integrity to be observed, which allows a condition based maintenance (CBM) strategy to be introduced for cable screens and earthing systems in MV networks. CBM allows the workload and failure rate to be reduced. Analysis of the condition of the cable screen and earthing system is carried out based on the cable screen earthing current trends and rapid changes of the current. The proposed system is integrated with a state of the art advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and uses AMI data to calculate currents flowing through cable segments of the analyzed feeder. Additionally, a system which counts thermo-mechanical stresses associated with high current incidents in cable screens is proposed. The stresses are ass... [more]

Fábio Retorta, João Aguiar, Igor Rezende, José Villar, Bernardo Silva
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ancillary services, distributed generation, local market, reactive power market, TSO-DSO coordination
This paper proposes a near to real-time local market to provide reactive power to the transmission system operator (TSO), using the resources connected to a distribution grid managed by a distribution system operator (DSO). The TSO publishes a requested reactive power profile at the TSO-DSO interface for each time-interval of the next delivery period, so that market agents (managing resources of the distribution grid) can prepare and send their bids accordingly. DSO resources are the first to be mobilized, and the remaining residual reactive power is supplied by the reactive power flexibility offered in the local reactive market. Complex bids (with non-curtailability conditions) are supported to provide flexible ways of bidding fewer flexible assets (such as capacitor banks). An alternating current (AC) optimal power flow (OPF) is used to clear the bids by maximizing the social welfare to supply the TSO required reactive power profile, subject to the DSO grid constraints. A rolling win... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fast frequency response (FFR), fault ride-through (FRT), frequency stability, power-electronic converter (PEC), reactive power, renewable energy sources (RES), short-circuit strength, solar-photovoltaic (PV), synchronous inertia, voltage stability, wind generation
The energy sector is currently undergoing a rapid transformation with the integration of power electronic converter (PEC)-interfaced renewable energy sources (RES), such as wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, at both the transmission and distribution networks. Power system stability has been significantly influenced by this power grid transformation. This paper comprehensively reviews major power system stability issues affected due to large-scale integration of PEC-interfaced RES in power grids, with some example case studies relevant for each stability category. According to the review, stability issues are mainly originating from reduction in synchronous inertia, reduction in reactive power reserve, low short-circuit strength of the power network, and fault ride-through (FRT) strategy/capability of the PEC-interfaced RES. Decrease in synchronous inertia could affect both the rotor angle stability and the frequency stability, while decrease in short-circuit strength and reactiv... [more]
Evaluation of the Effective Active Power Reserve for Fast Frequency Response of PV with BESS Inverters Considering Reactive Power Control
Dario Garozzo, Giuseppe Marco Tina
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active power reserve, BESS, frequency regulation, inverter efficiency, PV system, smart grids, voltage regulation
The increasing presence of distributed generation (DG) in the electrical grid determines new challenges in grid operations, especially in terms of voltage and frequency regulation. Recently, several grid codes have required photovoltaic (PV) inverters to control their reactive power output in order to provide voltage regulation services, and the allocation of a certain amount of active power reserve for fast frequency response (FFR) service during under-frequency contingencies is needed. This requirement involves a significant waste of energy for PV systems, due to the necessity to constantly operate in de-loaded mode, under normal operating conditions. In addition, the variability of the irradiance can affect the correct amount of active power reserve that the system can provide in the moments after an under-frequency occurrence. The increasing number of battery energy storage systems (BESSs), coupled to PV systems, can be used to provide a worthy contribution to this frequency regula... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage, distribution systems, energy forecasting, Model Predictive Control, real-time control, smart home
Home energy management systems (HEMS) are a key technology for managing future electricity distribution systems as they can shift household electricity usage away from peak consumption times and can reduce the amount of local generation penetrating into the wider distribution system. In doing this they can also provide significant cost savings to domestic electricity users. This paper studies a HEMS which minimizes the daily energy costs, reduces energy lost to the utility, and improves photovoltaic (PV) self-consumption by controlling a home battery storage system (HBSS). The study assesses factors such as the overnight charging level, forecasting uncertainty, control sample time and tariff policy. Two management strategies have been used to control the HBSS; (1) a HEMS based on a real-time controller (RTC) and (2) a HEMS based on a model predictive controller (MPC). Several methods have been developed for home demand energy forecasting and PV generation forecasting and their impact o... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active battery balancing, backpropagation neural network, DC/DC Buck-boost converter, PV-battery integrated system, state of charge estimation
Charging a group of series-connected batteries of a PV-battery hybrid system exhibits an imbalance issue. Such imbalance has severe consequences on the battery activation function and the maintenance cost of the entire system. Therefore, this paper proposes an active battery balancing technique for a PV-battery integrated system to improve its performance and lifespan. Battery state of charge (SOC) estimation based on the backpropagation neural network (BPNN) technique is utilized to check the charge condition of the storage system. The developed battery management system (BMS) receives the SOC estimation of the individual batteries and issues control signal to the DC/DC Buck-boost converter to balance the charge status of the connected group of batteries. Simulation and experimental results using MATLAB-ATMega2560 interfacing system reveal the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DASH7, energy harvesting, IoT, LoRa, LoRaWAN, LPWAN, NB-IoT, Sigfox
The emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) architectures and applications has been the driver for a rapid growth in wireless technologies for the Machine-to-Machine domain. In this context, a crucial role is being played by the so-called Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs), a bunch of transmission technologies developed to satisfy three main system requirements: low cost, wide transmission range, and low power consumption. This last requirement is especially crucial as IoT infrastructures should operate for long periods on limited quantities of energy: to cope with this limitation, energy harvesting is being applied every day more frequently, and several different techniques are being tested for LPWAN systems. The aim of this survey paper is to provide a detailed overview of the the existing LPWAN systems relying on energy harvesting for their powering. In this context, the different LPWAN technologies and protocols will be discussed and, for each technology, the applied energy harves... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ancillary services, battery energy storage system, hybrid AC/DC house, smart house, solid state transformer
The ongoing diffusion of solid-state DC/DC converters makes possible a partial migration of electric power systems from the present AC paradigm to a future DC scenario. In addition, the power demand in the domestic environment is expected to grow considerably, for example, due to the progressive diffusion of electric vehicles, induction cooking and heat pumps. To face this evolution, the paper introduces a novel electric topology for a hybrid AC/DC smart house, based on the solid-state transformer technology. The electric scheme, voltage levels and converters types are thoroughly discussed to better integrate the spread of electric appliances, which are frequently based on internal DC buses, within the present AC distribution networks. Voltage levels are determined to guarantee high safety zones with negligible electric risk in the most exposed areas of the house. At the same time, the developed control schemes assure high power quality (voltage stability in the case of both load varia... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, cummins equation, extreme waves and responses, hybrid code, numerical limit, wave steepness
Survivability assessment is the complexity compromising Wave energy development. The present study develops a hybrid model aiming to reduce computational power while maintaining accuracy for survivability assessment of a Point-Absorber (PA) Wave Energy Converter (WEC) in extreme Wave Structure Interaction (WSI). This method couples the fast inviscid linear potential flow time-domain model WaveDyn (1.2, DNV-GL, Bristol, UK) with the fully nonlinear viscous Navier−Stokes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code OpenFOAM (4.2, OpenFOAM.org, London, UK). The coupling technique enables the simulation to change between codes, depending on an indicator relating to wave steepness identified as a function of the confidence in the linear model solution. During the CFD part of the simulation, the OpenFOAM solution is returned to WaveDyn via an additional load term, thus including viscous effects. Developments ensure a satisfactory initialisation of CFD simulation to be achieved from a ‘hot-start’... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: burning velocity, combustion bomb, iso-octane, n-heptane, surrogate fuels, Toluene
In this work are presented experimental values of the burning velocity of iso-octane/air, n-heptane/air and n-heptane/toluene/air mixtures, gasoline surrogates valid over a range of pressures and temperatures similar to those obtained in internal combustion engines. The present work is based on a method to determine the burning velocities of liquid fuels in a spherical constant volume combustion bomb, in which the initial conditions of pressure, temperature and fuel/air equivalence ratios can be accurately established. A two-zone thermodynamic diagnostic model was used to analyze the combustion pressure trace and calculate thermodynamic variables that cannot be directly measured: the burning velocity and mass burning rate. This experimental facility has been used and validated before for the determination of the burning velocity of gaseous fuels and it is validated in this work for liquid fuels. The values obtained for the burning velocity are expressed as power laws of the pressure, t... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ARIMA, long-term forecasting, multi-area electricity markets, SARIMA, wind power forecasting
Wind power has been increasing its participation in electricity markets in many countries around the world. Due to its economical and environmental benefits, wind power generation is one of the most powerful technologies to deal with global warming and climate change. However, as wind power grows, uncertainty in power supply increases due to wind intermittence. In this context, accurate wind power scenarios are needed to guide decision-making in power systems. In this paper, a novel methodology to generate realistic wind power scenarios for the long term is proposed. Unlike most of the literature that tackles this problem, this paper is focused on the generation of realistic wind power production scenarios in the long term. Moreover, spatial-temporal dependencies in multi-area markets have been considered. The results show that capturing the dependencies at the monthly level could improve the quality of scenarios at different time scales. In addition, an evaluation at different time sc... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: financial liberalisation, political stability policy, quantile estimates, real economic growth, resource policy, trade openness
This study aimed to analyse financial liberalisation, political stability, and economic determinants of Kenya’s real economic growth using time series data over the period of 1970−2016. The authors specified quadratic and interactive models to be estimated by employing a quantile regression analysis. The traditional and quantile unit root test was used in testing the stationarity issue. The co-integration findings indicated that the capital account openness and financial development impede on real economic growth; and the political stability also had potential influence on the real economic growth of Kenya. Interestingly, there is a nonlinear U-shape link between financial development and real economic growth that undermined the real economic growth at its onset, but as it advanced, it enhanced the growth of the country in the long run. The policymakers should ensure that the capital account is more liberalised so that it will continue to stimulate the financial development. In the sam... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air stripping, ammonia removal efficiency, ammonium sulphate, anaerobic digestion, digestate, energy recovery, methane production
In order to overcome anaerobic digestion (AD) inhibition due to the large nitrogen content of swine wastewater (SW), air stripping (AS) and other chemical and physical pretreatments were applied on raw SW before AD. The efficiency of these pretreatments on both ammonia removal—recovering ammonia salts to be used as fertilizers in agriculture—and the increase of methane production were assessed in batch tests. Since the pH, temperature, and air flow rate heavily influence AS efficiency and the composition of treated SW, these parameters were set individually or in combination. In more detail, the pH was increased from the natural value of SW to 8 or 10, temperature was increased from the room value to 40 °C, and the air flow rate was increased from zero to 5 Lair LSW−1 min−1. AS was generally more efficient at removing ammonia (up to 97%) from raw (non-treated) SW compared to the other treatments. However, the tested pretreatments were not as efficient as expected in increasing the biog... [more]

Keywords: battery degradation, electric vehicle, Li-ion, moving horizon window, real-time, smart charging, V2G, vehicle to grid
This paper proposes a two-stage smart charging algorithm for future buildings equipped with an electric vehicle, battery energy storage, solar panels, and a heat pump. The first stage is a non-linear programming model that optimizes the charging of electric vehicles and battery energy storage based on a prediction of photovoltaïc (PV) power, building demand, electricity, and frequency regulation prices. Additionally, a Li-ion degradation model is used to assess the operational costs of the electric vehicle (EV) and battery. The second stage is a real-time control scheme that controls charging within the optimization time steps. Finally, both stages are incorporated in a moving horizon control framework, which is used to minimize and compensate for forecasting errors. It will be shown that the real-time control scheme has a significant influence on the obtained cost reduction. Furthermore, it will be shown that the degradation of an electric vehicle and battery energy storage system are... [more]
