Continuous Control Set Model Predictive Control of a Switch Reluctance Drive Using Lookup Tables
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: continuous control set, electrical drive, magnetization surface, Model Predictive Control, pulse-width modulation, switched reluctance motor drive
A problem of the switched reluctance drive is its natural torque pulsations, which are partially solved with finite control set model predictive control strategies. However, the continuous control set model predictive control, required for precise torque stabilization and predictable power converter behavior, needs sufficient computation resources, thus limiting its practical implementation. The proposed model predictive control strategy utilizes offline processing of the magnetization surface of the switched reluctance motor. This helps to obtain precalculated current references for each torque command and rotor angular position in the offline mode. In online mode, the model predictive control strategy implements the current commands using the magnetization surface for fast evaluation of the required voltage command for the power converter. The proposed strategy needs only two lookup table operations requiring very small computation time, making instant execution of the whole control... [more]

Analysis of Synchronization Stability for Multi VSCs Parallel-Connected to Weak Grids by Improved Net Damping Criterion
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: net damping criterion, PLL, synchronization stability, VSC, weak grid
Recent studies show that the loss of stability for a voltage-source converter (VSC) in weak-grid connection is largely related to its synchronization unit, i.e., the phase-locked loop (PLL). This paper studies the synchronization stability of a system comprised by two VSCs in parallel connection to a weak grid. A reduced transfer function based small-signal model, which can allow for the interactions between PLL and converter outer power controls, is first proposed. Then, an improved net damping criterion is used to analyze the damping and stability characters of such system under various operating conditions and different controller configurations. Compared to the conventional net damping criterion, the used criterion has wider applicability in terms of stability judgment. Case studies show that the studied system tends to be unstable at weak-grid or heavy-loading conditions. The instability can be in the form of oscillations or monotonic divergence, in which, the latter is more likel... [more]

Novel Dynamic Resistance Equalizer for Parallel-Connected Battery Configurations
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery equalization, design optimization, dynamic resistance equalizer (DRE), second-life battery energy storage system (SL-BESS), state-of-charge (SOC)
As the number of parallel battery connections in an energy storage system is increased to extend the energy capacity and second-life batteries are actively adopted, the battery is more prone to cell inconsistency issues. The difference in the internal impedance and the mismatched state-of-charge accelerates the self-balancing effect between the parallel branches to reduce cell utilization and eventually results in harmful effects, both to the lifetime and to the safety of the batteries. However, conventional methods only partially mitigate the parallel inconsistency issue. This paper proposes a dynamic resistance equalizer for parallel-connected battery configurations to improve equalization performance. The optimal design procedure is also presented to minimize the power loss and equalization time. The overall performance is experimentally verified by a sequence of tests for a Li-ion battery in a 2S-4P configuration. The experimental results show that the proposed method dissipates le... [more]

A CFD Investigation of a 2D Balanced Vane Pump Focusing on Leakage Flows and Multiphase Flow Characteristics
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 2D, Computational Fluid Dynamics, multiphase flow, rotary vane pump
Vane pumps are often applied in automatic transmission systems of vehicles. Future applications require the oil pumps to be more efficient and to be able to handle multiphase flow pumping situations to a certain extend. To fulfill these requirements, efficient development tools are needed. Therefore, a less demanding computational 2D model of a fixed-type balanced vane pump was derived and numerically analyzed with the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS CFX. The meshing of the rotating parts was done with TwinMesh, using a moving mesh approach. At first, a mesh convergence study was performed. It was shown that the resolution of the radial clearances in particular had a significant influence on the predicted leakages and the volumetric efficiency. The leakage was further investigated concerning the dependence on rotational speed and delivery pressure. In the next step, multiphase flows were considered. In a first setup, vapor cavitation was analyzed and the in... [more]

Gasification of Shenhua Bituminous Coal with CO2: Effect of Coal Particle Size on Kinetic Behavior and Ash Fusibility
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ash fusibility, bituminous coal, gasification kinetics, particle size
Coal gasification is the process that produces valuable gaseous mixtures consisting primarily of H2 and CO, which can be used to produce liquid fuel and various kinds of chemicals. The literature shows that the effect of particle size on coal gasification and fusibility of coal ash is not clear. In this study, the gasification kinetics and ash fusibility of three coal samples with different particle size ranges were investigated. Thermogravimetric results of coal under a CO2 atmosphere showed that the whole weight loss process consisted of three stages: the loss of moisture, the release of volatile matter, and char gasification with CO2. Coal is a heterogeneous material containing impurities. Different grinding fineness leads to different liberation degrees for impurities. As for the effect of particle size on TG (thermogravimetry) curves, we found that the final solid residue amount was the largest for the coal sample with the smallest particle size. Subject: Information Management
Keywords: home energy management system, Internet of things, smart grid, smart home, smart plugs, wireless sensor network
With the growth in smart technology, customers have a chance to contribute to demand response programs and reduce their bills of electricity actively. This paper presents an intelligent wireless smart plug demonstration, which is designed to control the electrical appliances in the home energy management system (HEMS) application with a response to the utility company’s signal. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: extreme learning machine, fault diagnosis, high-voltage circuit breaker, missing data, Softmax
Most of the prior-art electrical noninvasive monitoring systems adopt Zigbee, Bluetooth, or other wireless communication infrastructure. These low-cost channels are often interrupted by strong electromagnetic interference and result in monitoring anomalies, particularly packet loss, which severely affects the precision of equipment fault identification. In this paper, an iterative online fault identification framework for a high-voltage circuit breaker utilizing a novel lost data repair technique is developed to adapt to low-data quality conditions. Specifically, the improved efficient k-nearest neighbor (kNN) algorithm enabled by a k-dimensional (K-D) tree is utilized to select the reference templates for the unintegrated samples. An extreme learning machine (ELM) is utilized to estimate the missing data based on the selected nearest neighbors. The Softmax classifier is exploited to calculate the probability of the repaired sample being classified to each of the preset status classes.... [more]

Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming Formulation of Contingency Constrained Optimal Power Flow with Photovoltaic Generation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: contingency constrained optimal power flow, optimal power flow, quadratically constrained quadratic programming
Contingency Constrained Optimal Power Flow (CCOPF) differs from traditional Optimal Power Flow (OPF) because its generation dispatch is planned to work with state variables between constraint limits, considering a specific contingency. When it is not desired to have changes in the power dispatch after the contingency occurs, the CCOPF is studied with a preventive perspective, whereas when the contingency occurs and the power dispatch needs to change to operate the system between limits in the post-contingency state, the problem is studied with a corrective perspective. As current power system software tools mainly focus on the traditional OPF problem, having the means to solve CCOPF will benefit power systems planning and operation. This paper presents a Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming (QCQP) formulation built within the matpower environment as a solution strategy to the preventive CCOPF. Moreover, an extended OPF model that forces the network to meet all constraints un... [more]

Sub- and Supercritical Water Liquefaction of Kraft Lignin and Black Liquor Derived Lignin
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: black liquor, hydrothermal liquefaction, lignin from black liquor
To mitigate global warming, humankind has been forced to develop new efficient energy solutions based on renewable energy sources. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising technology that can efficiently produce bio-oil from several biomass sources. The HTL process uses sub- or supercritical water for producing bio-oil, water-soluble organics, gaseous products and char. Black liquor mainly contains cooking chemicals (mainly alkali salts) lignin and the hemicellulose parts of the wood chips used for cellulose digestion. This review explores the effects of different process parameters, solvents and catalysts for the HTL of black liquor or black liquor-derived lignin. Using short residence times under near- or supercritical water conditions may improve both the quality and the quantity of the bio-oil yield. The quality and yield of bio-oil can be further improved by using solvents (e.g., phenol) and catalysts (e.g., alkali salts, zirconia). However, the solubility of alkali salts pr... [more]

Fast Heuristic AC Power Flow Analysis with Data-Driven Enhanced Linearized Model
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Data-driven, linearization, power flow, power system operations, regression analysis
Though the full AC power flow model can accurately represent the physical power system, the use of this model is limited in practice due to the computational complexity associated with its non-linear and non-convexity characteristics. For instance, the AC power flow model is not incorporated in the unit commitment model for practical power systems. Instead, an alternative linearized DC power flow model is widely used in today’s power system operational and planning tools. However, DC power flow model will be useless when reactive power and voltage magnitude are of concern. Therefore, a linearized AC (LAC) power flow model is needed to address this issue. This paper first introduces a traditional LAC model and then proposes an enhanced data-driven linearized AC (DLAC) model using the regression analysis technique. Numerical simulations conducted on the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) system demonstrate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed DLAC model.

Development of Enhancing Battery Management for Reusing Automotive Lithium-Ion Battery
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive control theory, battery management system (BMS), internal resistances, open-circuit voltage, reused battery
In this study, a battery management system (BMS) is developed for reused lithium-ion battery (RLIB). Additional enhancing functions of battery management are established, i.e., estimation of life-sensitized parameters and life extension. Life-sensitizing parameters mainly include open-circuit voltage (OCV) and internal resistances (IRs). They are sensitized parameters individually relative to state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH). For estimating these two parameters, an adaptive control scheme is implemented in BMS. This online adaptive control approach has been extensively applied to nonlinear systems with uncertainties. In two experiments, OCV and IRs of reused battery packs are accurately extracted from working voltage and discharge current. An offline numerical model using a schematic method is applied to verify the applicability and efficiency of this proposed online scheme. The Influence of Luminaire Photometric Intensity Curve Measurements Quality on Road Lighting Design Parameters
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, luminaire photometric intensity curve, luxmeter, street lighting
This article presents the research on a road lighting design. In this kind of design for a specific type of a roadway, the number and spacing of luminaires are calculated on the basis of luminaire photometric parameters such as intensity curve (LPIC) and luminous flux. The values of these parameters are measured using the luxmeter, i.e., a measuring instrument in which the spectral sensitivity should imitate spectral sensitivity of the human eye V(λ). However, the luxmeter’s spectral sensitivity S(λ) is not perfectly matched with the required one and varies for different instruments, resulting in measurement errors. To avoid this measurement error, the spectral mismatch correction factor (SMCF) should be applied to luxmeter’s readings. For a given luxmeter, the SMCF values depend on the measured light’s spectral composition SPD (described also by the lamp’s correlated color temperature CCT). Unfortunately, many laboratories do not apply SMCF to their luxmeter readings. Typical measurem... [more]

The estimation of such indicators requires the development of a database of building assessments. In this study, an LCA of 11 office buildings in Poland was used to set average values that can be used as a benchmark. The LCA methodology based on the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) certification was used. The analysis did not concentrate on one type of office building. Analysis of Relaxation Time of Temperature in Thermal Response Test for Design of Borehole Size
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: groundwater velocity, moving line source theory, optical fiber distributed temperature sensor, relaxation time of temperature, thermal response test
A new practical method for thermal response test (TRT) is proposed herein to estimate the groundwater velocity and effective thermal conductivity of geological zones. The relaxation time of temperature (RTT) is applied to determine the depths of the zones. The RTT is the moment when the temperature in the borehole recovers to a certain level compared with that when the heating is stopped. The heat exchange rates of the zones are calculated from the vertical temperature profile measured by the optical-fiber distributed temperature sensors located in the supply and return sides of a U-tube. Finally, the temperature increments at the end time of the TRT are calculated according to the groundwater velocities and the effective thermal conductivity using the moving line source theory applied to the calculated heat exchange rates. These results are compared with the average temperature increment data measured from each zone, and the best-fitting value yields the groundwater velocities for eac... [more]

Keywords: hydrophilic coating, particle monolayer, thermal management, water transport, wick
Passive water transport through thin-surface wicks made of heat conducting material is important for developing thermal management devices such as heat pipes and spreaders. In this study, we demonstrated the hydrophilic coating of a Cu particle monolayer wick for enhanced water transport. We fabricated a Cu particle monolayer using Cu powder with a nominal particle diameter of 100 μm and determined the particle size distribution using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We observed a remarkable change in the water contact angle on the application of a hydrophilic coating, which demonstrated the enhanced passive water transport. The elemental mapping of Cu, O, and Si obtained by electron probe microanalysis confirmed the deposition of the SiO2-based coating material on each Cu particle. Although the Cu particles were only partially covered by SiO2, a remarkable enhancement in wettability was achieved.
