Model-Based Design of Experiments for High-Dimensional Inputs Supported by Machine-Learning Methods
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Bayes-like sampling, chemical engineering, Gaussian process regression, optimal experimental design
Algorithms that compute locally optimal continuous designs often rely on a finite design space or on the repeated solution of difficult non-linear programs. Both approaches require extensive evaluations of the Jacobian Df of the underlying model. These evaluations are a heavy computational burden. Based on the Kiefer-Wolfowitz Equivalence Theorem, we present a novel design of experiments algorithm that computes optimal designs in a continuous design space. For this iterative algorithm, we combine an adaptive Bayes-like sampling scheme with Gaussian process regression to approximate the directional derivative of the design criterion. The approximation allows us to adaptively select new design points on which to evaluate the model. The adaptive selection of the algorithm requires significantly less evaluations of Df and reduces the runtime of the computations. We show the viability of the new algorithm on two examples from chemical engineering.

Improved Continuous-Cycling Method for PID Autotuning
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: autotuning, continuous-cycling, disturbance, frequency response, harmonics, phase angle
An improved continuous-cycling method is proposed for the autotuning of the proportional−integral−derivative (PID) controller. The proposed method can identify the frequency response of the process at a preset phase angle without a modeling error. Moreover, it provides an exact frequency response even if a static disturbance is present. The proposed method is an improved version of the continuous-cycling method. The gain of the proportional controller in the continuous-cycling method is updated to obtain the continuous-cycling status automatically. To guarantee the preset phase angle of the frequency response, we place a phase shifter in the form of a time delay after the proportional controller. The results of simulation and experimental studies show that the proposed method can provide an exact frequency response even under static disturbance conditions and can be applied to real processes.

Pretreatment of Switchgrass for Production of Glucose via Sulfonic Acid-Impregnated Activated Carbon
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: activated carbon, catalyst, Ctec2, glucose, pretreatment, sulfonic solid, switchgrass
In the present research, activated carbon-supported sulfonic acid catalysts were synthesized and tested as pretreatment agents for the conversion of switchgrass into glucose. The catalysts were synthesized by reacting sulfuric acid, methanesulfonic acid, and p-toluenesulfonic acid with activated carbon. The characterization of catalysts suggested an increase in surface acidities, while surface area and pore volumes decreased because of sulfonation. Batch experiments were performed in 125 mL serum bottles to investigate the effects of temperature (30, 60, and 90 °C), reaction time (90 and 120 min) on the yields of glucose. Enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated switchgrass using Ctec2 yielded up to 57.13% glucose. Durability tests indicated that sulfonic solid-impregnated carbon catalysts were able to maintain activity even after three cycles. From the results obtained, the solid acid catalysts appear to serve as effective pretreatment agents and can potentially reduce the use of convention... [more]

Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring Based on Deep Pairwise-Supervised Hashing to Detect Unidentified Appliances
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: deep pairwise-supervised hashing, feature learning, hash-code learning, non-intrusive load monitoring, V-I trajectory
Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) is a fast developing technique for appliances operation recognition in power system monitoring. At present, most NILM algorithms rely on the assumption that all fluctuations in the data stream are triggered by identified appliances. Therefore, NILM of identifying unidentified appliances is still an open challenge. To pursue a scalable solution to energy monitoring for contemporary unidentified appliances, we propose a voltage-current (V-I) trajectory enabled deep pairwise-supervised hashing (DPSH) method for NILM. DPSH performs simultaneous feature learning and hash-code learning with deep neural networks, which shows higher identification accuracy than a benchmark method. DPSH can generate different hash codes to distinguish identified appliances. For unidentified appliances, it generates completely new codes that are different from codes of multiple identified appliances to distinguish them. Experiments on public datasets show that our method can... [more]

Testing the Accuracy of the Cell-Set Model Applied on Vane-Type Sub-Boundary Layer Vortex Generators
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cell-set model, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), LES, RANS, vortex generator (VG)
Vortex Generators (VGs) are applied before the expected region of separation of the boundary layer in order to delay or remove the flow separation. Although their height is usually similar to that of the boundary layer, in some applications, lower VGs are used, Sub-Boundary Layer Vortex Generators (SBVGs), since this reduces the drag coefficient. Numerical simulations of sub-boundary layer vane-type vortex generators on a flat plate in a negligible pressure gradient flow were conducted using the fully resolved mesh model and the cell-set model, with the aim on assessing the accuracy of the cell-set model with Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence modelling techniques. The implementation of the cell-set model has supposed savings of the 40% in terms of computational time. The vortexes generated on the wake behind the VG; vortical structure of the primary vortex; and its path, size, strength, and produced wall shear stress have been studied. Th... [more]

Analysis of Global Warming’s Influence on the Dimensioning of Borehole Heat Exchangers at a Climate-Exposed Site
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: borehole heat exchanger, geothermal energy, heat pump, performance optimization
A borehole heat exchanger (BHE) presents the most reliable source of geothermal energy for any object where the heat pump system is to be installed. The main objective of BHE optimization in a specific rock massive and for calculated heat consumption is to design a BHE with proper capacity and sustainable performance. One of the most important inputs for the preparation of such a model is the average outer air temperature on the site during the year. While the properties of the local rock massive are from the heat project lifetime view (tens of years) stable, the local average outer temperature fluctuates according to global climate changes. This article presents a study of the impact of climate changes on the dimensioning process of a BHE and consequently on its performance using data from a real installation at a highly climate-exposed site in the Czech Republic. During the dimensioning of a BHE, this study could help to better quantify the objective risks that result from climate ch... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: catalytic hydrogenation process, hydrocracking processes, moving-bed reactor, oil refining, tar
In recent years, there has been a trend in the global oil industry to improve the proportion of heavy high-sulfur crude oils in the total volume of extracted and processed resources, reserves of which are estimated at over 800 billion metric tons. Therefore, the main line of oil refining is processing of heavy crudes and residua to allow maximum use of the hydrocarbon potential and yield of high-margin products. Hydrogenation processes of heavy raw materials are most attractive in terms of product quality. This article analyzes tar hydrocracking processes that are either in operation or at the stage of full-scale testing. These include Veba Combi-Cracker (VCC), Uniflex, suspended-bed catalyst hydrocracking (ENI), and vacuum residue hydroconversion (TIPS RAS). These technologies use heterogeneous catalysts and are designed to obtain the largest possible amount of liquid products. Investigation on Dynamic Stresses of Pump-Turbine Runner during Start Up in Turbine Mode
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clearance, dynamic stress, pressure fluctuation, pump-turbine, start-up process
The startup process occurs frequently for pumped storage units. During this process, the rotating rate that changes rapidly and unsteady flow in runner cause the complex dynamic response of runner, sometimes even resonance. The sharp rise of stress and the large-amplitude dynamic stresses of runner will greatly shorten the fatigue life. Thus, the study of start-up process in turbine mode is critical to the safety operation. This paper introduced a method of coupling one dimensional (1D) pipeline calculation and three-dimensional computational dynamics (3D CFD) simulation to analyze transient unsteady flow in units and to obtain more accurate and reliable dynamic stresses results during start up process. According to the results, stress of the ring near fixed support increased quickly as rotating rate rose and became larger than at fillets of leading edge and band in the later stages of start-up. In addition, it was found that dynamic response can be caused by rotor stator interaction (... [more]

Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer Emulator for Power Electronics Testing Applications
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic operation, emulator, PEM electrolyzer, power electronics, steady-state operation
This article aims to develop a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer emulator. This emulator is realized through an equivalent electrical scheme. It allows taking into consideration the dynamic operation of PEM electrolyzers, which is generally neglected in the literature. PEM electrolyzer dynamics are reproduced by the use of supercapacitors, due to the high value of the equivalent double-layer capacitance value. Steady-state and dynamics operations are investigated in this work. The design criteria are addressed. The PEM electrolyzer emulator is validated by using a 400-W commercial PEM electrolyzer. This emulator is conceived to test new DC-DC converters to supply the PEM ELs and their control as well, avoiding the risk to damage a real electrolyzer for experiment purposes. The proposed approach is valid both for a single cell and for the whole stack emulation.

Revenue and Cannibalization: The Effect of Interchangeable Design Confronted Remanufacturing Processing
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: cannibalization, game theory, interchangeable design, remanufacturing, Sustainability
Traditional wisdom suggests that the interchangeable design in process system engineering, such as modularity or commonality design, can lower the manufacturing cost and act as a revenue driver. Moreover, the interchangeable design will be efficient in both assembling for new production and disassembling for remanufacturing. As such, interchangeable design confronted remanufacturing processing often involves a balance of revenue from cost drivers and cannibalization effects from remanufacturing. Therefore, this paper studies how the original equipment manufacturers’ (OEMs’) interchangeable design impacts the remanufacturing decisions, as well as the economy and environment. Specifically, we develop two theoretical models, in which an OEM makes a strategic choice relating to design interchangeability when the remanufacturing operations are undertaken by itself (Model O) or outsourced to third-party remanufacturers (Model T). This study finds that, although the optimal level of interchan... [more]

Modeling the Influence of Temperature, Light Intensity and Oxygen Concentration on Microalgal Growth Rate
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Hinshelwood model, microalgae, Modelling, oxidative stress, ROS, toxicity
Dissolved oxygen plays a key role in microalgal growth at high density. This effect was so far rarely quantified. Here we propose a new model to represent the combined effect of light, oxygen concentration and temperature (LOT-model) on microalgae growth. The LOT-model introduces oxygen concentration in order to represent the oxidative stress affecting the cultures, adding a toxicity term in the expression of the net growth rate. The model was validated with experimental data for several species such as Chlorella minutissima, Chlorella vulgaris, Dunaliella salina, Isochrysis galbana. It successfully predicted experimental records with an average error lower than 5.5%. The model was also validated using dynamical data where oxygen concentration varies. It highlights a strong impact of oxygen concentration on productivity, depending on temperature. The model quantifies the sensitivity to oxidative stress of different species and shows, for example, that Dunaliella salina is much less aff... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), tripartite motif 21 (TRIM21)
Tripartite motif 21 (TRIM21) plays an important role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the gene polymorphisms of TRIM21 in HCC is not as well known. In this study, two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the TRIM21 gene, rs4144331, and re915956, were selected to investigate correlations between these SNPs and susceptibility to HCC. Two SNPs of the TRIM21 gene from 1196 controls without cancer and 394 HCC patients were analyzed using real-time polymerase chain reaction. These results were further analyzed to expound the associations between these TRIM21 polymorphisms and the risk of HCC as well as the impact of these SNPs on clinicopathological characteristics of HCC. After adjustment for other covariants, we observed that that younger patients (<65 years) with the TRIM21 rs915956 A allele had a probability of HCC (AOR = 3.153, 95% CI: 1.315−7.516, p = 0.010). Subject: Materials
Keywords: hydrothermal hydrolysis, nitrogen extraction, pre-treatment, sequential hydrothermal liquefaction, sewage sludge
A hydrothermal pre-treatment has been developed to improve sewage sludge quality or to produce low nitrogen biocrude via hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) in a subsequent step. The mild hydrothermal pre-treatment (150 °C) step was performed with deionized water, sulfuric acid (0.5 M), or citric acid (0.5 M) to solubilize nitrogen containing compounds in the aqueous supernatant. Downstream, the residual solid material was liquefied with the addition of sodium carbonate via hydrothermal liquefaction (350 °C). The pre-treatment with citric acid transferred up to 66.7 wt. % of nitrogen into the aqueous supernatant, while 62.0 wt. % of carbon was recovered in the solid. Due to the pre-treatment lipids retained in the sewage sludge solid, which increased the favored biocrude yield up to 42.9 wt. % and the quality evaluating value H/Ceff ratio significantly to 1.48. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: coupling, dead time, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) industrial process, radial basis function (RBF) network, reinforcement learning, self-tuning control
Proportional−integral−derivative (PID) control remains the primary choice for industrial process control problems. However, owing to the increased complexity and precision requirement of current industrial processes, a conventional PID controller may provide only unsatisfactory performance, or the determination of PID gains may become quite difficult. To address these issues, studies have suggested the use of reinforcement learning in combination with PID control laws. The present study aims to extend this idea to the control of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) process that suffers from both physical coupling between inputs and a long input/output lag. We specifically target a thin film production process as an example of such a MIMO process and propose a self-tuning two-degree-of-freedom PI controller for the film thickness control problem.
