A Caprock Evaluation Methodology for Underground Gas Storage in a Deep Depleted Gas Reservoir: A Case Study for the X9 Lithologic Trap of Langgu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: caprock, evaluation system, mechanical brittleness, sealing capacity, underground gas storage (UGS)
The evaluation of caprocks’ sealing capacity is exceedingly important for depleted gas reservoirs to be reconstructed into gas storage. In this paper, based on the physical sealing mechanism of caprock, four aspects of ten indexes of caprock quality evaluation were firstly selected, and the related classification standards were established. Secondly, based on the rock mechanical sealing mechanism, elastic and plastic indexes were selected to characterize the mechanical brittleness of caprock, and a brittleness evaluation method of caprock based on complete stress-strain curves was established. Then, a systematic comprehensive evaluation model (including 5 aspects and 12 evaluation indexes) for the sealing capacity of gas storage caprock was proposed, and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was used to determine the weight of the 12 indexes in the evaluation model, and the formula for calculating the suitability of the caprock sealing capacity was established. Finally, the geological d... [more]

Physics-Based Proxy Modeling of CO2 Sequestration in Deep Saline Aquifers
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2 sequestration, Machine Learning, proxy modeling, reservoir simulation, saline aquifers
The geological sequestration of CO2 in deep saline aquifers is one of the most effective strategies to reduce greenhouse emissions from the stationary point sources of CO2. However, it is a complex task to quantify the storage capacity of an aquifer as it is a function of various geological characteristics and operational decisions. This study applies physics-based proxy modeling by using multiple machine learning (ML) models to predict the CO2 trapping scenarios in a deep saline aquifer. A compositional reservoir simulator was used to develop a base case proxy model to simulate the CO2 trapping mechanisms (i.e., residual, solubility, and mineral trapping) for 275 years following a 25-year CO2 injection period in a deep saline aquifer. An expansive dataset comprising 19,800 data points was generated by varying several key geological and decision parameters to simulate multiple iterations of the base case model. The dataset was used to develop, train, and validate four robust ML models—... [more]

Low Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC) Energy Crops to Bioenergy and Biofuels—A Review
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biochemical technologies, chemical process, contaminated soils, degraded soils, energy potential, forest crops, herbaceous species, marginal soils, microalgae culture, thermochemical process
Energy crops are dedicated cultures directed for biofuels, electricity, and heat production. Due to their tolerance to contaminated lands, they can alleviate and remediate land pollution by the disposal of toxic elements and polymetallic agents. Moreover, these crops are suitable to be exploited in marginal soils (e.g., saline), and, therefore, the risk of land-use conflicts due to competition for food, feed, and fuel is reduced, contributing positively to economic growth, and bringing additional revenue to landowners. Therefore, further study and investment in R&D is required to link energy crops to the implementation of biorefineries. The main objective of this study is to present a review of the potential of selected energy crops for bioenergy and biofuels production, when cultivated in marginal/degraded/contaminated (MDC) soils (not competing with agriculture), contributing to avoiding Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC) burdens. The selected energy crops are Cynara cardunculus, Arundo... [more]

Cooperative Control Mechanism of Efficient Driving and Support in Deep-Buried Thick Top-Coal Roadway: A Case Study
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bolt support, driving and support coordination, high stress in deep-buried mine, surrounding rock stability control, thick top-coal roadway
For deep-buried thick top-coal roadways under high stress, there exists great difficulty in controlling the stability of the surrounding rock as well as in the necessity for low driving speeds. Taking the return air roadway 20201 (RAR 20201) of the Dahaize Coal Mine as the background, this paper presents a typical engineering case of a deep-buried thick top-coal roadway in a western mine. Through methods such as in situ investigation, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and engineering practice, we studied the deformation and failure mechanisms of the surrounding rock in a deep-buried high-stress thick top-coal roadway, and revealed the driving speed effect. Results show that compared with shallow buried roadways, the deep-buried thick-roof coal roadway suffers a greater range of damage and failure. The roof damage is so deep that it exceeds the action range of bolts, resulting in the stress transferring to both sides, which affects the stability of the roadway surroundings. The... [more]

Non-Matrix Quick Pass: A Rapid Evaluation Method for Natural Fractures and Karst Features in Core
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbonate reservoir characterization, core logging, dual porosity, fractures, karst, non-matrix characterization
Mechanical and chemical processes experienced by carbonate rocks result in a complex network of natural fractures and dissolution features that have direct implications on porosity, permeability, and connectivity in reservoirs. Characterization of natural fractures is best done in core; however, it can be time-consuming due to the large amounts of individual features present and the long list of attributes typically collected for each feature. Additionally, karst features in core, such as vugs and small cavities, are seldom characterized in a quantitative way or are overlooked. We introduce a new methodology, called the non-matrix quick pass (NMQP), which allows for the collection of non-matrix features in a rapid yet quantitative fashion at a rate of 12 to 20 m of core per hour. The NMQP methodology offers enough vertical resolution so that observations can be integrated with other wellbore data types (e.g., wireline logs, well tests, and production logs). This method also yields esti... [more]

Transient Pressure and Rate Behavior of a Vertically Refractured Well in a Shale Gas Reservoir
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorption and desorption, fracture reorientation, refracturing treatment, shale gas reservoir, transient pressure and rate behavior
Refracturing treatment is widely used to enhance the well productivity in shale gas reservoirs, particularly for initially fractured wells with low productivity. The principal of this work is based on the transient behavior of pressure and rate for a vertically refractured well in a shale gas reservoir, considering the fracture reorientation and adsorption and desorption property. Based on the point-source theory and Laplace transform, a semi-analytical solution for a refractured well is obtained by coupling the point-source solution of a shale gas reservoir and the solution of artificial fractures. The validation of this new solution is carried out smoothly by comparison with the results from the commercial software COMSOL. Five typical flow regimes are identified on the transient pressure curve, namely bi-linear flow regime, formation linear flow regime, mid-radial flow regime, inter-porosity flow regime, and pseudo-radial flow regime. A groove segment occurs on the transient-pressur... [more]

Modeling of Floor Heave in Underground Roadways in Dry and Waterlogged Conditions
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: floor damaged rock, floor heave modeling, floor heaving phenomena, floor uplift over time, underground roadway, waterlogged rock
Floor heaving is a phenomenon that occurs in almost all mining roadways and tunnels. It can restrain the advance of the heading face or cause serious problems during roadway use. The highest levels of floor uplifting are observed in coal mines, which can reduce the output or even stop it altogether. The floor heaving intensity depends on the rock type, the stress in the rock mass, and rocks’ mechanical properties. Floor deformation develops when the secondary state of stress is formed around the working, and it is much higher and more dynamic in the case of waterlogged rocks. The presence of water increases the floor’s propensity to heave, especially clay rocks, such as claystones or mudstones, if they include water-absorbed minerals. In this paper, we present a new modeling methodology for roadway floor heave. The modeling covers a dry floor condition in which the parameters of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion are gradually lowered over time, and a waterlogged floor condition, in whic... [more]

Keywords: anfis, cascaded system, centrifugal pumps, energy-sufficient start-up, induction motor, variable speed drives
In the industrial world, parallel pump systems are frequently employed. Due to various reasons, the pumps are frequently operated outside their intended parameters, which reduces their efficiency and performance. To operate the pump system with optimum efficiency, the pumps and their speed selection are mandatory. This research presents an optimum switching technique for variable speed pumping stations with multi-parallel pump combinations to enhance energy savings. The proposed optimal control system is designed in such a way as to decrease overall losses in the pump system. The effectiveness of the proposed method is investigated on a real scale of a multi-parallel pump drive system in a Matlab Simulink environment, and experimental validation is performed in a laboratory prototype. The suggested approach enhances power savings and shall be adapted for various pumping applications.

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: HTS, multi-input, optimal current vector, wireless power transfer
This paper presents a newly-designed optimal current algorithm for high-temperature superconductor (HTS)-based multi-input wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. In this way, both high controllability and lower AC losses can be achieved in the proposed systems, and they are especially superior for long-range and long-time operations. Simplified AC loss modeling for HTS windings is developed for the designed transmitter coils. The accordant optimal current vector is derived and analyzed in order to achieve the highest output power and the lowest primary AC losses. With the proper current control of multiple transmitters and the use of a designed HTS coupler, the system controllability can be greatly improved compared with conventional WPT systems. Based on the information on the impedance characteristics on the primary side, the magnetic field generated by different transmitters can be maximized at the target position. Organic Salt Hydrate as a Novel Paradigm for Thermal Energy Storage
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: deliquescence, organic salt hydrate, thermochemical energy storage, thermogravimetric dynamic vapor sorption
The use of inorganic salt hydrates for thermochemical energy storage (TCS) applications is widely investigated. One of the drawbacks that researchers face when studying this class of materials is their tendency to undergo deliquescence phenomena. We here proposed and investigated, for the first time, the possibility of using organic salt hydrates as a paradigm for novel TCS materials with low water solubility, that is, more resistance to deliquescence, a tendency to coordinate a high number of water molecules and stability under operating conditions. The organic model compound chosen in this study was calcium; 7-[[2-(2-amino-1,3-thiazol-4-yl)-2-methoxyiminoacetyl]amino]-3-[(2-methyl-5,6-dioxo-1H-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)sulfanylmethyl]-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylate, known as calcium ceftriaxone, hereafter named CaHS (calcium hydrated salt), a water-insoluble organic salt, which can combine up to seven water molecules. Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: bioethanol, P. stipitis, S. cerevisiae, small bioreactor platform capsules, T. reesei
Biofuel is considered one of the most viable alternatives to fossil fuels derived from the dwindling petroleum resources that damage the environment. Bioethanol could be manufactured from agricultural wastes, thus providing inexpensive natural resources. Several strategies have been utilized to convert lignocellulosic hydrolysate to bioethanol with various suspended microorganisms. In this study, we alternatively propose to encapsulate these microorganisms in bioreactor setups. An immobilized cell system can provide resistance to the inhibitors present in hydrolysates, enhance productivity, facilitate the separation process, and improve microorganism recycling. Herein, we developed a continuous bioethanol production process by encapsulating three types of micro-organisms: T. reesei, S. cerevisiae, and P. stipitis. These microorganisms were encapsulated in SBP (“Small Bioreactor Platform”) capsules and tested for their viability post encapsulation, biological activity, and bioethanol pr... [more]

Chilean Electric Transmission Regulation: From a Merchant Approach to Central Planning
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: central planning, congestion, cost allocation, electric transmission, merchant approach, project auction, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
From the 1980s onwards, many jurisdictions reformed their electricity sectors to create energy markets. To this end, they unbundled transmission from generation, raising the issue of whether and how to regulate transmission. This paper contributes to this literature by analyzing the 40-year Chilean experience. To do so, it describes the initial transmission regulation, the changes introduced, the causes that triggered them, and their results regarding grid access and expansion and their impact on the energy market. The Chilean Electricity Act, issued in 1982, established open access to transmission facilities but left access and expansion conditions unregulated. This situation caused generators’ grid access problems, harming energy market competition. In 2004, lawmakers amended the Act to require the regulator to develop annual expansion plans and regulate transmission remuneration and financing. Following these changes, transmission expanded adequately for about a decade. However, sin... [more]

Modified Particle Swarm Optimization with Attention-Based LSTM for Wind Power Prediction
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: attention mechanism, LSTM neural network, modify particle swarm optimization algorithm (MPSO), wind power prediction
The accuracy of wind power prediction is crucial for the economic operation of a wind power dispatching management system. Wind power generation is closely related to the meteorological conditions around wind plants; a small variation in wind speed could lead to a large fluctuation in the extracted power and is difficult to predict accurately, causing difficulties in grid connection and generating large economic losses. In this study, a wind power prediction model based on a long short-term memory network with a two-stage attention mechanism is established. An attention mechanism is used to measure the input data characteristics and trend characteristics of the wind power and reduce the initial data preparation process. The model effectively alleviates the intermittence and fluctuation of meteorological conditions and improves prediction accuracy significantly. In addition, the modified particle swarm optimization algorithm is introduced to optimize the hyperparameters of the LSTM netw... [more]
