Operation Optimization of an Integrated Energy Service Provider with Ancillary Service Provision
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ancillary service, integrated energy service provider (IESP), optimal operation strategy, regional integrated energy system (RIES)
During the transition towards a low carbon energy system, and as a result of the increasing penetration of renewable energy generation, ancillary services play an important role in ensuring the security and economics of power system operation. An integrated energy service provider (IESP), with the energy coupling and storage devices inside, can flexibly participate in electric energy markets and ancillary service markets. In this paper, a mixed-integer optimization problem is formulated to determine the optimal operating strategy for the IESP with ancillary service provision. First, the mathematical model of a regional integrated energy system (RIES) is established, including energy coupling devices and energy storage devices. Then, an optimization model for the IESP operation is formulated with the objective of maximizing daily operation profit, and the corresponding optimal capacity of ancillary service provision from the IESP is attained. Finally, case studies of an RIES are carried... [more]

Hydrogen Production Cost Forecasts since the 1970s and Implications for Technological Development
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass hydrogen, gray hydrogen, historical trend, production cost forecast, renewable electrolysis hydrogen
This study reviews the extant literature on hydrogen production cost forecasts to identify and analyze the historical trend of such forecasts in order to explore the feasibility of wider adoption. Hydrogen is an important energy source that can be used to achieve a carbon-neutral society, but the widespread adoption of hydrogen production technologies is hampered by the high costs. The production costs vary depending on the technology employed: gray, renewable electrolysis, or biomass. The study identifies 174 production cost forecast data points from articles published between 1979 and 2020 and makes a comparative assessment using non-parametric statistical tests. The results show three different cost forecast trends across technologies. First, the production cost of gray hydrogen showed an increasing trend until 2015, but started declining after 2015. Second, the renewable electrolysis hydrogen cost was the highest of all, but has shown a gradual declining trend since 2015. Finally,... [more]

Intelligent Tuned Hybrid Power Filter with Fuzzy-PI Control
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy consumption, fuzzy intelligent scheme, hybrid power filter, proportional integral control, shunt active filter computing
With the growing impact of power regulators, machines, and other power electronic devices on the quality of utility electric service, harmonics has recently emerged as a major research topic in the area of power quality and energy consumption. In this work, a fuzzy intelligent inductor−capacitor−inductor hybrid power filter is designed to reduce harmonics in the distribution line. The shunt active power filter and passive filter design and consideration have been improved. Since the nature of proportional integral control is only efficient with linear variations and the real condition of the distribution system is always varying nonlinearly, to create a minimum steady error, fuzzy-tuned proportional integral control is designed to intelligently consider the input changes and revise the decision rules using fuzzy reasoning. The content of the harmonic current with respect to the varying load is momentarily commutated. Thus, using Clarke’s transformation, the errors are summed with insta... [more]

Semi-3D Analysis of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator Considering Bolting and Overhang Structure
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: end effect, permanent magnet synchronous generator, PM overhang, semi-3D techniques
This study deals with the characteristic analysis of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) with a bolting and an overhang structure. Bolting is applied to a PMSG to prevent the defects caused by scattering. To compensate the flux reduction caused by the end effect and bolting material, an overhang structure is used for the permanent magnet machine. Therefore, an overhang structure must be considered in the three-dimensional (3D) analysis of a PMSG; however, such an analysis is time-intensive. To reduce the initial analysis time, we performed a semi-3D analysis of a PMSG considering a bolting and an overhang structure. Subsequently, we compared the output results of the characteristic analysis with a 3D finite element method and experimental results under loading.

Load Frequency Robust Control Considering Intermittent Characteristics of Demand-Side Resources
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: demand response, intermittent characteristics, LMI, parameter uncertainty, robust control
Renewable energy has the characteristics of low carbon and environmental protection compared to traditional water and thermal power, but it also has the intermittency and uncertainty that traditional water and thermal power does not have. These characteristics make the inertia of the power system increase, which greatly affects the frequency stability of the grid. To solve such problems, the participation of demand-side resources (DSRs) in the dispatch of power systems has become a viable solution. However, unlike generation-side resources, DSRs have their own unique characteristics. In this paper, by taking into account a load frequency control system (LFC) with intermittent demand-side resources, the robust H∞ load frequency control problem are discussed in detail.A robust controller to coordinate the load side with the resource side is introduced. A critical stability criterion and robust performance evaluation of the new LFC system was carried out. Finally, simulation results based... [more]

Online Estimation of Open Circuit Voltage Based on Extended Kalman Filter with Self-Evaluation Criterion
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: extended Kalman filter, incremental capacity and differential voltage curves, lithium-ion battery, open circuit voltage, self-evaluation criterion
Open circuit voltage (OCV) is crucial for battery degradation analysis. However, high-precision OCV is usually obtained offline. To this end, this paper proposes a novel self-evaluation criterion based on the capacity difference of State of Charge (SoC) unit interval. The criterion is integrated into extended Kalman filter (EKF) for joint estimations of OCV and SoC. The proposed method is evaluated in a typical application scenario, energy storage system (ESS), using a LiFePO4 (LFP) battery. Extensive experimental results show that a more accurate OCV and incremental capacity and differential voltage (IC-DV) can be achieved online with the proposed method. Our method also greatly improves the accuracy of SoC estimation at each SoC point where the maximum estimation error of SoC is less than 0.3%.

Development and Application of an Open-Source Framework for Automated Thermal Network Generation and Simulations in Modelica
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 5GDHC, bidirectional low temperature network, district heating, dynamic thermal hydraulic pipe simulation, graph framework, numerical simulation, ULTDH network
District heating and cooling (DHC) networks, and in particular, the fifth generation of DHC networks, offer great potential in increasing the overall system efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions in the heating and cooling of urban districts. Due to the growing complexity of these energy systems, the use of new planning methods, such as the use of dynamic simulation models based on Modelica, becomes more important. However, especially with large, complex thermal networks, there is a high effort for manual model construction and parameterization. For this reason, we present a framework for automated model generation of DHC networks based on simulation models in Modelica written in Python. The core function of the Python framework is to transform a graph representation of a district heating network into a dynamic simulation model. The authors briefly describe the workflow and demonstrate its applicability with three different use cases. We investigate the impact of different design decisi... [more]

Preliminary Results of Biomass Gasification Obtained at Pilot Scale with an Innovative 100 kWth Dual Bubbling Fluidized Bed Gasifier
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass gasification, dual bubbling bed gasifier, H2-rich syngas, innovative pilot scale gasifier
Biomass gasification is a favourable process to produce a H2-rich fuel gas from biogenic waste materials. In particular, the dual bubbling fluidized bed (DBFB) technology consists of the separation of the combustion chamber, fed with air, from the gasification chamber, fed with steam, allowing to obtain a concentrated syngas stream without N2 dilution. In a previous work, an innovative design of a DBFB reactor was developed and its hydrodynamics tested in a cold model; in this work, the novel gasifier was realized at pilot scale (100 kWth) and operated for preliminary biomass gasification tests. The results showed a high-quality syngas, composed of H2 = 35%, CO = 23%, CO2 = 20%, and CH4 = 11%, as a confirmation of the design efficacy in the separation of the reaction chambers. The dry gas yield obtained was 1.33 Nm3/kg of biomass feedstock and the carbon conversion was 73%. Tars were sampled and measured both in the raw syngas, giving a content of 12 g/Nm3, and downstream from a tradit... [more]

Fault Detection and Diagnosis Encyclopedia for Building Systems: A Systematic Review
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building systems, data repositories, data-based methods, fault detection and diagnosis (FDD), heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), model-based methods, systematic review
This review aims to provide an up-to-date, comprehensive, and systematic summary of fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) in building systems. The latter was performed through a defined systematic methodology with the final selection of 221 studies. This review provides insights into four topics: (1) glossary framework of the FDD processes; (2) a classification scheme using energy system terminologies as the starting point; (3) the data, code, and performance evaluation metrics used in the reviewed literature; and (4) future research outlooks. FDD is a known and well-developed field in the aerospace, energy, and automotive sector. Nevertheless, this study found that FDD for building systems is still at an early stage worldwide. This was evident through the ongoing development of algorithms for detecting and diagnosing faults in building systems and the inconsistent use of the terminologies and definitions. In addition, there was an apparent lack of data statements in the reviewed article... [more]

Operation of the Electronic Current Transformer for Transformation of Distorted Current Higher Harmonics
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: current transducer, distorted current, electronic current transformer, Hall effect, higher harmonics
This paper evaluates an electronic current transformer’s wideband accuracy in the transformation of distorted current harmonics. The tests were performed in the range of frequencies from 50 Hz to 5 kHz. The utmost importance was dedicated to the transformation of the low-order higher harmonics. The novelty of this paper involves the analysis of the self-generation of the third and fifth higher harmonics caused by the nonlinearity of magnetic core magnetization characteristics. Therefore, what is considered new in this investigation is that this phenomenon has a significant influence on values of current errors and phase displacements despite the presence of the operational amplifiers and the Hall sensors in the output circuits. Another important factor to consider is the influence of the RMS value of the primary current and output load of the ECT on wideband accuracy. To show the backgrounds of the performed laboratory studies, we also discuss the operation principles of the ECTs with... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: FOWT, Mexican Pacific, offshore wind energy, technical assessment, Tehuantepec Isthmus
The growing energy demand has increased the consumption of hydrocarbons in developing countries such as Mexico, which has contributed to accelerating global warming. Although Mexico has suitable offshore wind energy harvesting sites, technical assessments to identify technologies to be placed in specific locations are scarce. In Mexico, offshore wind resources are found in depths larger than 50 m. There, floating platforms are convenient for harnessing wind energy. This work presents a technical evaluation of offshore wind energy in one of the regions with a higher availability of wind resources on the Mexican coasts, the Tehuantepec Gulf, in the Pacific Ocean. First, a specific location is chosen to evaluate its maritime conditions and theoretical wind energy potential. Next, the performance of a floating offshore wind turbine platform has been investigated numerically using potential flow simulations. A Novel Method for On-Line Characterization of Alkali Release and Thermal Stability of Materials Used in Thermochemical Conversion Processes
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Biomass, ilmenite, potassium, sodium, surface ionization, TGA
Alkali metal compounds are released during the thermal conversion of biofuels and fossil fuels and have a major impact on the efficiency of conversion processes. Herein, we describe a novel method for the simultaneous characterization of alkali release and mass loss from materials used in combustion and gasification processes including solid fuels, fluidized bed materials, and catalysts for gas reforming. The method combines the thermogravimetric analysis of selected samples with the on-line measurement of alkali release using a surface ionization detector. The technique builds on the careful treatment of alkali processes during transport from a sample to the downstream alkali monitor including the losses of alkali in the molecular form to hot walls, the formation of nanometer-sized alkali-containing particles during the cooling of exhaust gases, aerosol particle growth, and diffusion losses in sampling tubes. One-Day-Ahead Solar Irradiation and Windspeed Forecasting with Advanced Deep Learning Techniques
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: advanced deep learning, Artificial Intelligence, data mining, increased RES penetration, Machine Learning, solar irradiation forecasting, windspeed forecasting
In recent years, demand for electric energy has steadily increased; therefore, the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) at a large scale into power systems is a major concern. Wind and solar energy are among the most widely used alternative sources of energy. However, there is intense variability both in solar irradiation and even more in windspeed, which causes solar and wind power generation to fluctuate highly. As a result, the penetration of RES technologies into electricity networks is a difficult task. Therefore, more accurate solar irradiation and windspeed one-day-ahead forecasting is crucial for safe and reliable operation of electrical systems, the management of RES power plants, and the supply of high-quality electric power at the lowest possible cost. Clouds’ influence on solar irradiation forecasting, data categorization per month for successive years due to the similarity of patterns of solar irradiation per month during the year, and relative seasonal similarity... A Research Trend on Anonymous Signature and Authentication Methods for Privacy Invasion Preventability on Smart Grid and Power Plant Environments
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: anonymous signature, authentication, cryptography, micro grid, power plant, security, smart grid
A smart grid is an intelligent power grid. In recent years, the smart grid environment and its applications are incorporated into a variety of areas. The smart grid environment, however, can expose much more information than the old environments. In the environment, smart devices can be media in the exposure of various and specific pieces of information as well as energy consumption. This poses a huge risk in that it, combined with other pieces of information, may expose much more information. The current smart grid environment raises a need to develop anonymous signature and authentication techniques to prevent privacy breaches. Trying to meet this need, the principal investigator conducted research for three years. This paper discusses both the research trends investigated by him and the limitations of the development research and future research in need. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: elevated pressure, gas-turbine combustor, large eddy simulation, lean methane flame, NOx emission, particle image velocimetry, proper orthogonal decomposition
The present paper reports on the numerical simulation of flow dynamics in a model gas-turbine combustor by large eddy simulation in order to evaluate the effect of coherent flow structures on the local fluctuations of gas temperature and local concentrations of NO and CO. The simulations were performed for a generic swirler, based on the design by Turbomeca, for a Reynolds number of 15,000 at normal and elevated inlet temperature and pressure (up to 500 K and 3.4 atm). The simulation data were validated based on the velocity measurements by stereoscopic particle image velocimetry. In order to reveal coherent flow structures, the velocity snapshots were processed by the proper orthogonal method. The temporal coefficients of the decomposition were used to evaluate the conditional sampled spatial distributions of the temperature and species concentration. It is shown that the coherent fluctuations of temperature can locally reach up to 200 K with the fluctuations of NO up to 20%. Thus, th... [more]

Impact of Solar Inverter Dynamics during Grid Restoration Period on Protection Schemes Based on Negative-Sequence Components
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: inverter-based resources, negative-sequence, relay protection, solar PV
The growing penetration of renewable resources such as wind and solar into the electric power grid through power electronic inverters is challenging grid protection. Due to the advanced inverter control algorithms, the inverter-based resources present fault responses different from conventional generators, which can fundamentally affect the way that the power grid is protected. This paper studied solar inverter dynamics focused on negative-sequence quantities during the restoration period following a grid disturbance by using a real-time digital simulator. It was found that solar inverters can act as negative-sequence sources to inject negative-sequence currents into the grid during the restoration period. The negative-sequence current can be affected by different operating conditions such as the number of inverters in service, grid strength, and grid fault types. Such negative-sequence responses can adversely impact the performance of protection schemes based on negative-sequence comp... [more]

Value for Money: Local Authority Action on Clean Energy for Net Zero
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: innovative governance, integrated local energy systems, local authority, net zero energy, social value
Local authorities are well placed to realise co-benefits of integrated local energy systems; however, in the UK they have no statutory energy mandate. Planning and developing clean energy are discretionary, and persistent budget reductions, combined with the lack of strategic direction from the UK government for more localised energy provision, limit local capacity, expertise and resources. Nevertheless, some local authorities have led energy initiatives but have been unable to stimulate investment at the pace and scale required to align with net zero greenhouse gas targets. Using evidence from such initiatives, this paper discusses the institutional changes needed to enable local authorities to act. It examines existing climate and local energy plans, and their integral socio-economic value. Using this evidence, investment opportunities from locally led net zero programmes are identified. Subject: Materials
Keywords: cryogenics, hydrogen tank, insulation, liquid hydrogen
Hydrogen has been attracting attention as a fuel in the transportation sector to achieve carbon neutrality. Hydrogen storage in liquid form is preferred in locomotives, ships, drones, and aircraft, because these require high power but have limited space. However, liquid hydrogen must be in a cryogenic state, wherein thermal insulation is a core problem. Inner materials, including glass bubbles, multi-layer insulation (MLI), high vacuum, and vapor-cooled shields, are used for thermal insulation. An analytic study is preferred and proceeds liquid hydrogen tanks due to safety regulations in each country. This study reviewed the relevant literature for thermodynamic modeling. The literature was divided into static, dynamic, and systematic studies. In summary, the authors summarized the following future research needs: The optimal design of the structure, including suspension, baffle, and insulation system, can be studied to minimize the boil-off gas (BOG). Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault clearing time, high-voltage direct current (HVDC), interarea oscillation, line commutated converter (LCC), multiterminal direct current (MTDC), oscillation damping, rotor angle, short circuits ratio
The deployment of a 765-kV transmission line on Eskom’s South African Grid marks the beginning of a new era in power industries. The integration of renewable energies by independent power producers (IPPs) leads to an infrastructural change in the stability performance of the entire grid. These developments are expected to bring about a multiterminal direct current (MTDC) system for practical implementation on this grid. Therefore, this study focuses on the dynamic response of the South African transmission grid during a system disturbance. In the carrying out of this study, the South African grid was modeled on PSCAD, and its performance was evaluated. The impact of the MTDC link on the grid’s interarea oscillation was also investigated. An additional current order controller for the MTDC link was developed, and its impact on the MTDC power transfer was analyzed. The results show a better system performance and reduced interarea power swings with the inclusion of the MTDC link.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: behavior change, energy consumption, human-behavior representation, virtual choreograhies
Reducing office buildings’ energy consumption can contribute significantly towards carbon reduction commitments since it represents ∼40% of total energy consumption. Major components of this are lighting, electrical equipment, heating, and central cooling systems. Solid evidence demonstrates that individual occupants’ behaviors impact these energy consumption components. In this work, we propose the methodology of using virtual choreographies to identify and prioritize behavior-change interventions for office users based on the potential impact of specific behaviors on energy consumption. We studied the energy-related office behaviors of individuals by combining three sources of data: direct observations, electricity meters, and computer logs. Data show that there are behaviors with significant consumption impact but with little potential for behavioral change, while other behaviors have substantial potential for lowering energy consumption via behavioral change.

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: circular bioeconomy, Energy, wood waste
Over 30% of the world’s land area is covered by forests. Approximately 761 million m3 of wood is harvested annually in Europe (2017). The aim of the paper is to assess the amount of wood (biomass) produced in Europe per year, as it determines the amount of carbon dioxide released from wood because of combustion for heating and energy purposes. The circular bioeconomy was applied as the theoretical framework for this study. The study employs official statistics on material flows and also uses a technology assessment, which allows for more precise estimations. It can be estimated that 110 million tons of harvested woody biomass are converted into energy every year. This constitutes nearly 69% of processed wood, with burned wood treated as zero-emission. From the analysis of the compiled results, it can be concluded that, in Europe, more than 50% of the mass of raw wood material harvested per year is used for energy in the first stage of processing by manufacturing industries.
