Solid Digestate—Mathematical Modeling of Combustion Process
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: apple pomace, Biomass, combustion process model, corn silage, digestate
The combustion of waste biomass is becoming a key challenge for the energy sector, especially in times of growing energy demand and increasing environmental awareness of society. Processing such fuels is usually demanding. Mathematical modeling makes it possible to adapt the course of the process. The best option is to use appropriate fuel mixtures. The aim of this work was to develop a simple model that would allow the pre-selection of the mixture of two types of digestate. Residues from methane fermentation of maize and apple pomace were used in the study. The paper presents both a mathematical model and laboratory tests. The practical part was to check the validity of the model estimates. The model works on the basic data from physicochemical analysis. Laboratory tests included combustion of the samples of different mixtures. We used image analysis of thermograms to determine changes during combustion, which allowed us to determine when and where the main combustion occurs. Results... [more]

Design and Control of a Multi-Axis Servo Motion Chair System Based on a Microcontroller
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: kinematics, mechatronics, multi-axis control, real-time control
In this study, we present a design and a control based on a microcontroller for a multi-axis servo motion chair. The main purpose was to provide the pilot with the tactile sensations required by the human body to increase the immersion of simulation training. With high system control reliability and multi-functionality, the proposed architecture was built with an effective split of the control tasks involved between a master controller and five slave drivers. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed control system, RS485 and RS232 communication transmission interfaces were provided for the control system to obtain related movement information. The performance of the motion chair was assessed through various experimental tests. The results confirmed that the proposed multi-core system-on-chip microcontroller (MCU) with independent communication and real-time control subsystems was feasible to control a multi-axis servo motion chair system.

Study of Tower Clearance Safety Protection during Extreme Gust Based on Wind Turbine Monitoring Data
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gust, monitoring data, tower clearance, wind energy, wind turbine
Large-scale wind turbines often face the problem of tower clearance safety under extreme gust conditions. Since gust intensity is positively correlated with the change rate of the generator’s speed, a gust identification method is proposed based on wind turbine monitoring data. Furthermore, a novel tower clearance safety protection strategy is proposed, which superimposes some additional speed requirements on the basis of normal pitch rate when identifying extreme gust so as to alleviate the dynamic response of the wind turbine. Simulations and comparison of a 5 MW wind turbine, before and after applying the new strategy, showed that the new strategy can induce an increase in pitch angle for the wind turbine and, simultaneously, avoids the emergency stop caused by the generator’s overspeed. Meanwhile, when the new strategy is adopted, the blade tip’s deformation and the load on the top of the tower are reduced by 19.9% and 52.2%, respectively. Therefore, the proposed strategy can not o... [more]

A New Hybrid Neural Network Method for State-of-Health Estimation of Lithium-Ion Battery
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: bidirectional gated recurrent units, dilated convolutional neural networks, hybrid network, lithium-ion battery, state-of-health
Accurate estimation of lithium-ion battery state-of-health (SOH) is important for the safe operation of electric vehicles; however, in practical applications, the accuracy of SOH estimation is affected by uncertainty factors, including human operation, working conditions, etc. To accurately estimate the battery SOH, a hybrid neural network based on the dilated convolutional neural network and the bidirectional gated recurrent unit, namely dilated CNN-BiGRU, is proposed in this paper. The proposed data-driven method uses the voltage distribution and capacity changes in the extracted battery discharge curve to learn the serial data time dependence and correlation. This method can obtain more accurate temporal and spatial features of the original battery data, resulting higher accuracy and robustness. The effectiveness of dilated CNN-BiGRU for SOH estimation is verified on two publicly lithium-ion battery datasets, the NASA Battery Aging Dataset and Oxford Battery Degradation Dataset. The... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: activation, Biomass, brewer’s spent grain, HTC, plasma, pore size distribution, structure
This paper presents results that show the effect of hydrothermal carbonization and subsequent cold plasma jet treatment with helium and argon on the structure and sorption properties of a material—spent brewery grain. Treatment of activated carbon, with a cold atmospheric plasma jet, was used comparatively. The effect of activation on the pore structure of the materials was carried out by the volumetric method at low pressure (N2, 77 K). The specific surface area as well as the total pore volume, average pore size, and pore size distribution were determined using different theoretical models. A high improvement in the sorption capacity parameter was obtained for hydrochars after cold atmospheric plasma jet treatment with an increase of 7.5 times (using He) and 11.6 times (using Ar) compared with hydrochars before cold atmospheric plasma jet treatment. The increase in specific surface area was five-fold (He) and fifteen-fold (Ar). For activated carbon, such a large change was not obtain... [more]

An Ensemble Transfer Learning Spiking Immune System for Adaptive Smart Grid Protection
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial immune system, clonal selection algorithm, critical infrastructure protection, ensemble learning, Izhikevich spiking neural networks, smart energy grids, transfer learning
The rate of technical innovation, system interconnection, and advanced communications undoubtedly boost distributed energy networks’ efficiency. However, when an additional attack surface is made available, the possibility of an increase in attacks is an unavoidable result. The energy ecosystem’s significant variety draws attackers with various goals, making any critical infrastructure a threat, regardless of scale. Outdated technology and other antiquated countermeasures that worked years ago cannot address the complexity of current threats. As a result, robust artificial intelligence cyber-defense solutions are more important than ever. Based on the above challenge, this paper proposes an ensemble transfer learning spiking immune system for adaptive smart grid protection. It is an innovative Artificial Immune System (AIS) that uses a swarm of Evolving Izhikevich Neural Networks (EINN) in an Ensemble architecture, which optimally integrates Transfer Learning methodologies. Fuzzy Dynamic Thermal Rating System-Based Thermal Aging Model for Transmission Lines
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: annealing, fuzzy dynamic thermal rating systems, loss of tensile strength, thermal aging, transmission line
Electricity demand has surged over the last several years and will persist in the future. Increased transmission loads cause transmission lines to operate much closer to their security limits, leading to thermal and mechanical stress and thus affecting the transmission reliability and thermal aging. Accordingly, monitoring the conductor temperature over time is critical to identifying power transmission networks that may need extra attention and perhaps maintenance. This paper presents a fuzzy thermal aging model for transmission lines equipped with a fuzzy dynamic thermal rating system based on the IEEE 738 standard. In this framework, the ampacity of the transmission line was calculated. The conductor temperature was computed with the back-calculation method by considering the fully loaded transmission line. The estimated conductor temperature was employed to determine the corresponding conductor fuzzy loss of tensile strength, i.e., the fuzzy annealing degree of the conductor based... [more]

Analysis of Principal Factors on Energy Consumption of Expressway Service Buildings
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air-conditioning energy consumption, expressway service building, partial correlation analysis, principal factors
As commercial transportation complexes, expressway service buildings have large passenger flow and a poor energy-saving effect, and have become the focus of energy conservation and emissions reduction efforts in the transportation field. At the same time, the particularity of the function determines that it is within the scope of no municipal supporting facilities, which renders them typical energy island-type buildings. This paper takes the expressway service buildings in a cold area as the research object, and carries out the correlation and partial correlation analysis of the factors influencing the operating energy consumption of the air-conditioning system. For the analysis of factors affecting the energy consumption of expressway service buildings during the operation period, considering that most of the service buildings are in the form of heating and cooling air conditioners, this paper chooses to represent the “refrigeration period” with a more obvious degree of influence. An nth Harmonic Current Suppression Method Based on the Impulse Current PWM Technique for a Multi-Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Fed with a Current Source Inverter
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current source inverter, harmonic current suppression, impulse current PWM technique, multi-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor
Among the existing harmonic current suppression methods, it is difficult and complicated to suppress any nth harmonic current accurately for multi-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). To solve this problem, this paper takes a five-phase dual-rotor PMSM fed with a current source inverter (CSI) as an example, and proposes an nth harmonic current suppression method based on the impulse current PWM algorithm. Firstly, the analysis is conducted and presented for the nth harmonic current in the mth harmonic space. Then, based on the Sliding Discrete Fourier Transformation (SDFT), a low-pass filter (LPF) named SDFT-LPF is designed. Additionally, the impulse current PWM technique for the five-phase CSI is realized. In this paper, the experiments have confirmed that the SDFT-LPF has good filter performance. Compared with the SVPWM, the impulse current PWM technique has the same DC-link current utilization rate, but it is easier to implement. Moreover, the proposed harmonic current... [more]

Controlling the Hydro-Swelling of Smectite Clay Minerals by Fe(III) Reducing Bacteria for Enhanced Oil Recovery from Low-Permeability Reservoirs
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: enhanced oil recovery, Fe(III) reducing microorganisms, inhibiting/shrinking hydro-swelling, low-permeability oil reservoirs, smectite clay minerals
The hydro-swelling of smectite clay minerals in low-permeability reservoirs further decreases the reservoir permeability and results in low oil recovery. Currently, the traditional chemical anti-swelling agents are widely used, but most of them are only effective in the short term and are not environmentally friendly. Here, we report the use of Fe(III) reducing microorganisms (FeRM) as a novel green anti-swelling agent to enhance oil recovery from low-permeability reservoirs. The results showed that FeRM (Proteus hauserifective) inhibited/reduced the hydro-swelling of smectite clay minerals through a three-step biochemical mineralization reaction process. The structural Fe(III) reduction in minerals by FeRM can be an important driving force for illitization. The maximum inhibition efficiency (36.6%) and shrinkage efficiency (69.3%) were achieved at 35 °C and 0.1 Mpa. Furthermore, core displacement tests showed that FeRM reduced the waterflooding injection pressure by 61.1%, increased t... [more]

Keywords: carbon neutrality, China, energy transition, institutional logic, public policy
Global warming is a critical crisis threatening human survival and development. International organizations and countries worldwide are introducing policies and practices to achieve carbon neutrality. In China, numerous carbon neutrality policies have been established; however, a systematic understanding of the underlying policy logic is lacking. Using the institutional analysis and development (IAD) framework, this paper analyzes selected carbon neutrality policies in China. We conducted a bibliometric visualization analysis of the texts of 20 policies and matched their logic to the elements of the IAD framework. We established 90 keywords with occurrences of no less than 10 times in China’s carbon neutrality policies. The network visualization analysis identified six clusters. We discuss implementation challenges of China’s carbon neutrality policies, address the policy implementation, and finally outline impacts on China’s carbon neutrality governance. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: aerodynamic drag, CFD (computational fluid dynamics), CO2 reduction, GHG (greenhouse gas), platooning
This study aims to analyze the aerodynamic interaction between moving vehicles platooning with the change in the platooning conditions on a freeway. The effect of the vortex generated by the forward vehicle reduces the value of the stagnation pressure generated at the front of the rear vehicle, which effectively reduces drag on the driving vehicle. To elucidate this, a total of four vehicles were applied to platooning at a speed of 100 km/h by altering the gap distance of heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) such as 0.5 Length (L), 1 L, 1.5 L, 2.0 L, and 2.5 L under the conditions of 1 L equal to 13.16 m. The stagnation pressure at the front of the following vehicle (FV) was reduced, and quantitative analysis of drag force generated at each leading vehicle (LV) and following vehicle that is platooning exhibited a reduction of about 51%, 56%, and 52%, respectively, when compared to the single moving HDV. This is considered as a reduction in engine power for the driving vehicle. Taken together, th... [more]

Asset Profitability in the Electricity Sector: An Iterative Approach in a Linear Optimization Model
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: asset profitability, electricity market modelling, iterative method, Optimization, power sector, scarcity prices
In a competitive electricity market, generation capacities can exactly cover their full costs. However, the real market deviates from this ideal in some aspects. One is the concern of non-existent or insufficient scarcity prices. We present an iterative method in a linear optimization model to investigate the profitability of assets in the absence of scarcity prices and how the system changes when this risk is incorporated into investors’ expectations. Therefore, we use a two-step optimization of capacity planning and unit commitment. Iteratively, mark-ups at the height of uncovered costs are added to investment costs. This typically leads to a system with better investment profitability while keeping the system cost increase low. The methodology is applied to a simplified brownfield generation system, targeting CO2-free power generation within 25 years. In a model with annual foresight of actors, iterations result in a generation system with significantly lower (or even no) uncovered... [more]

Improved Body Force Model for Estimating Off-Design Axial Compressor Performance
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: improved body force model, meridional entropy gradient, off-design, Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations, rotor 37
Based on the COMSOL software, body forces substituted into the Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) equations as the source terms instead of the actual blade rows were improved to better predict the compressor performance. Improvements in parallel body force modeling were implemented, central to which were the local flow quantities. This ensured accurate and reliable off-design performance prediction. The parallel force magnitude mainly depended on the meridional entropy gradient extracted from three-dimensional (3D) steady single-passage RANS solutions. The COMSOL software could easily and accurately translate the pitchwise-averaged entropy into the grid points of the body force domain. A NASA Rotor 37 was used to quantify the improved body force model to represent the compressor. Compared with the previous model, the improved body force model was more efficient for the numerical calculations, and it agreed well with the experimental data and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) resul... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: North Sea, offshore oil and gas field structure, oil and gas field, shelf sea
The object of this article is to define the facilities construction for the Avaldsnes section of the Johan Sverdrup field in the North Sea. Based on the experiences of oil and gas companies, the applicability of various offshore oil and gas field structures will be analyzed. According to the results, the most relevant field facilities scenarios were formed. Each scenario was technically and economically assessed. The technical assessment consisted of the evaluation of loads under the different climate conditions on the offshore oil and gas facility, along with resistance against overturning and sliding. The economic assessment included the calculation of the key economic indicators of various scenarios and comparing them. The integrated assessment indicated that the combination of several subsea production modules is the most cost-effective field facilities scenario to implement in the Avaldsnes area of the Johan Sverdrup field in the North Sea.

On the Use of the Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) Estimator as a Metric to Optimally Manage ICE Emissions
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: CVT powertrains, DALY, emissions optimal control, minimum health damage strategy, unified emissions evaluation
We propose a new management strategy for engines equipped with automatic transmissions based on the damage to human health caused by emissions. The damage to human health is quantified by the years of life lost in a population due to disability or early death caused by exposure to pollutants. Various engine emissions share a common factor: damage to human health. Our strategy aims to keep engines running along the line of minimum damage instead of focusing on minimal fuel consumption. We applied the minimum damage strategy to the powertrain of a light vehicle to evaluate its effectiveness. In this work, we discuss this strategy’s effects on continuous variable transmission and seven gears automatic transmission and compare the classic minimum fuel consumption strategy to the minimum damage strategy. The latter results in a 50% reduction in damage compared with the minimum consumption strategy at the expense of an 8% increase in fuel consumption.

An Actively Controlled Two-Terminal Network Implementing a Given Linear Nonconvolution-Type Immittance Operator
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control, linear systems with variable parameters, non-stationary digital filters, periodic systems
This paper is a study on the synthesis of digital filters used to control active or self-excited systems. The active two-terminal branch implements a nonconvolution-type immittance operator, which generates a current waveform depending on the given impedance or admittance operator. In this article, for the first time, the method of how to construct immittance operators for linear time-variant (nonconvolution-type) two-terminal circuits, over discrete time, is presented. These operators are useful when calculating periodic steady-state signals of a parametric circuit. The formula for the duty cycle is derived based on the current generated by this branch, assuming a known branch voltage or vice versa. This formula allows us to make a direct calculation of the duty-cycle in an analytical manner and does not refer to any auxiliary signals, e.g., sawtooth signals, or to any control systems, e.g., PI controller. The determined duty-cycles allow us to select the appropriate switching frequen... [more]

An Advanced TRACE Modeling Approach: Automatic Connection of 3D Cartesian and Cylindrical VESSEL Components in Integral Plant Models
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: automatic modeling, Cartesian VESSEL, Cylindrical VESSEL, MEDCoupling, TRACE
Best estimate system thermal-hydraulic codes in the nuclear engineering community, e.g., TRACE, RELAP3D, CATHARE-3, etc., were extended with 3D coarse-mesh components to better describe the 3D Thermal-Hydraulic (TH) phenomena taking place within the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) and the core. The RPV is usually shaped like a cylinder while the core is mostly a cube. Hence, the TRACE code is equipped with a Cylindrical VESSEL and a Cartesian VESSEL. The former one is to represent the RPV (including core), pressurizer, and steam generator. The latter one is more appropriate to represent the core. The two components are connected by two Vessel-Junctions (VJ) at the core inlet and outlet. Due to the different nodalization between the two VESSELs, the analyst needs to do repetitive and error-prone work defining the cell-to-cell junctions and their TH parameters. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: anomaly detection, condition monitoring, condition-based maintenance, fault diagnosis, main bearing, one-class support vector machine, predictive maintenance, SCADA data, wind turbine
To reduce the levelized cost of wind energy, through the reduction in operation and maintenance costs, it is imperative that the wind turbine downtime is reduced through maintenance strategies based on condition monitoring. The standard approach toward this challenge is based on vibration monitoring, which requires the installation of specific tailored sensors that incur associated added costs. On the other hand, the life expectancy of wind parks built during the 1990s wind power boom is dwindling, and data-driven maintenance strategies issued from already accessible supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) data is an auspicious competitive solution because no additional sensors are required. Note that it is a major issue to provide fault diagnosis approaches built only on SCADA data, as these data were not established with the objective of being used for condition monitoring but rather for control capacities. While the contribution of renewable energy technologies to the energy system is increasing, so is its level of complexity. In addition to new types of consumer systems, the future system will be characterized by volatile generation plants that will require storage technologies. Furthermore, a solid interconnected system that enables the transit of electrical energy can reduce the need for generation and storage systems. Therefore, appropriate methods are needed to analyze energy production and consumption interactions within different system constellations. Energy system models can help to understand and build these future energy systems. However, although various energy models already exist, none of them can cover all issues related to integrating renewable energy systems. The existing research gap is also reflected in the fact that current models cannot model the entire energy system for very high shares of renewable energies with high temporal resolution (15 min or 1-h steps) and hi... Pit Lakes Affected by a River Contaminated with Brines Originated from the Coal Mining Industry: Evolution of Water Chemistry in the Zakrzówek Horst Area (Krakow, Southern Poland)
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal mining brines, limestone quarry, pit lakes, Upper Jurassic limestones, water chemistry
Long-term coal mining activities in the Upper Silesia significantly affect the environment in southern Poland. Discharges of brines (with TDS reaching over 110 g/L) from mines are the main source of pollution of many rivers in Poland, including the Vistula River. The Zakrzówek horst is a small geological structure composed of the Upper Jurassic limestones. These limestones were exploited in several quarries. In the largest one (the “Zakrzówek” quarry), exploitation reached the depth of 36 m below the water table, i.e., about 32 m below the average water level in Vistula River which flows 700 m from the quarry. An important part of this inflow into quarries came from the contaminated Vistula River, with a chloride concentration over 2 g/L. The exploitation ceased in 1991, and dewatering ended in 1992. In the old quarry area, pit lakes appeared, which are unique because they present an example of a post-mining site affected by the riverine water contaminated with brines. Investigations o... [more]

The cultivation of perennial wild plant mixtures (WPMs) is becoming increasingly important in Germany for providing sustainably produced bioenergy. However, perennial energy cropping systems always raise the question of how to reclaim the land for arable crops. This study examined this issue by looking at how a former WPM area was returned to arable cropping for an organic farm. From 2013 to 2018, the WPM area was harvested annually in the autumn. From 2019 to 2020, it was co-managed with the surrounding land as a semi-intensive grassland under a three-cut regime. The area was then ploughed in the spring of 2021 to grow silage maize. Weeds were controlled mechanically once. Nevertheless, the perennial wild plant species grew vigorously, with common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare L.) standing out with a total fresh matter share of 29.0%. Subject: Materials
Keywords: experimental modal analysis, laser Doppler vibrometry, lithium-ion cell, welding
The inspection of the quality of welds in battery packs plays an important role in ensuring safety during the manufacturing and operation of energy-storage devices in automotive vehicles during service. This research investigated the novel application of laser Doppler vibrometry, a widely used non-destructive optical technique for modal analysis, to the post-weld evaluation of micro-TIG-welded interconnections in lithium-ion supercells. The experimental modal analysis showed features in the modal models of the supercells that were unique to their welding conditions. The comparisons between the supercells showed an absence of linear correlations between the modal parameters and the welding current, as well as differences in the welding parameters obtained from the negative and positive terminals of the cylindrical cells. These findings suggested that the modal parameters of the supercells were more strongly influenced by the rigidity of the structural materials than by the localized com... [more]

The Effects of De-Capacity Policy on Steel and Coal Firms’ Profitability: Evidence from China’s Listed Companies
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: coal companies, de-capacity policy, difference-in-difference, overcapacity industry, profitability, steel companies
Chinese overcapacity in the steel and coal industry has been on the rise since 2013, which leads to the misallocation of resources and decreases in production efficiency. In 2015, the Chinese central government adopted a series of de-capacity policies to resolve excess capacity and improve corporate profitability. However, there is scant evidence on the impacts of de-capacity policies on the firm profitability. Based on the data from Chinese listed companies in the steel and coal industry, this study constructs the difference-in-difference (DID) method to investigate the effects of the de-capacity policy on the profitability of listed companies in the steel and coal industry empirically. The results show that the de-capacity policy significantly increases the return on equity (ROE) of the experimental group, which is higher than that of the control group by 12.4%.
