Adaptive Control for Energy Exchange with Probabilistic Interval Predictors in Isolated Microgrids
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: interval predictions, isolated microgrid system, microgrid energy exchange, Model Predictive Control, reserve strategy, two-stage control
Stability and reliability are of the most important concern for isolated microgrid systems that have no support from the utility grid. Interval predictions are often applied to ensure the system stability of isolated microgrids as they cover more uncertainties and robust control can be achieved based on more sufficient information. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic microgrid energy exchange method based on the Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach to make better use of the prediction intervals so that the system stability and cost efficiency of isolated microgrids are improved simultaneously. Appropriate scenarios are selected from the predictions according to the evaluation of future trends and system capacity. In the meantime, a two-stage adaptive reserve strategy is adopted to further utilize the potential of interval predictions and maintain the system security adaptively. Reserves are determined at the optimization stage to prepare some extra capacity for the fluctuation... [more]

Characteristic Analysis and Indexing of Multimachine Transient Stabilization Using Virtual Synchronous Generator Control
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: center of inertia, mechanical torque, smart grid, smart inverter, stabilization, virtual synchronous generator
As distributed power sources via grid-connected inverters equipped with functions to support system stabilization are being rapidly introduced, individual systems are becoming more complex, making the quantification and evaluation of the stabilizing functions difficult. Therefore, to introduce distributed power sources and achieve stable system operation, a system should be reduced to a necessary but sufficient size in order to enable the quantification of its behavior supported by transient theory. In this study, a system in which multiple distributed power supplies equipped with virtual synchronous generator control are connected is contracted to a two-machine system: a main power supply and all other power supplies. The mechanical torque of each power supply is mathematically decomposed into inertia, damping, synchronization torques, and the governor effect. The system frequency deviations determined by these elements are quantitatively indexed using MATLAB/Simulink. The quantificat... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: decision support system, energy-intensive industry, multicriteria analysis, phase change materials, system integration, thermal energy storage, waste heat recovery
Reductions in energy consumption, carbon footprint, equipment size, and cost are key objectives for the forthcoming energy-intensive industries roadmaps. In this sense, solutions such as waste heat recovery, which can be replicated into different sectors (e.g., ceramics, concrete, glass, steel, aluminium, pulp, and paper) are highly promoted. Analysis of Crack Initiation and Propagation Thresholds of Inclined Cracks under High-Pressure Grouting in Ordovician Limestone
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: crack instability, critical grouting pressure, inclined crack, open-mode crack
Control of the grouting pressure within the critical grouting pressure for crack propagation in Ordovician limestone can not only ensure grout penetration length, but also prevent the risk of creating an artificial water channel. Based on the fracture mechanics theory, a formula was proposed to calculate the critical grouting pressure of mixed mode I-II cracks in Ordovician limestone. The necessary conditions for tilted crack opening, the rationality of the existing empirical value of the maximum allowable grouting pressure was investigated based on the mechanical model. The RFPA2D-Flow numerical simulation software was used to evaluate the deduced theory. The research results show that the deduced theoretical calculation formula of the critical grouting pressure agrees with the numerical simulation results; when the mixed mode I-II fracture initiation occurs, the grouting pressure exceeds the perpendicular stress of the overlying rock; the greater the density of the overlying rock mas... Maximum Power Point Tracking Based on Reinforcement Learning Using Evolutionary Optimization Algorithms
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: evolutionary algorithms, fuzzy logic controller, maximum power point tracking, Optimization, q-learning, reinforcement learning, state–action-reward-state–action
In this paper, two universal reinforcement learning methods are considered to solve the problem of maximum power point tracking for photovoltaics. Both methods exhibit fast achievement of the MPP under varying environmental conditions and are applicable in different PV systems. The only required knowledge of the PV system are the open-circuit voltage, the short-circuit current and the maximum power, all under STC, which are always provided by the manufacturer. Both methods are compared to a Fuzzy Logic Controller and the universality of the proposed methods is highlighted. After the implementation and the validation of proper performance of both methods, two evolutionary optimization algorithms (Big Bang—Big Crunch and Genetic Algorithm) are applied. The results demonstrate that both methods achieve higher energy production and in both methods the time for tracking the MPP is reduced, after the application of both evolutionary algorithms.

A Modular Multilevel Converter with an Advanced PWM Control Technique for Grid-Tied Photovoltaic System
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: grid connected, inverter, modular multilevel cascaded (MMC), modulation technique, solar photovoltaic (PV) solar power generation
Due to global warming and shortage of fossil fuels, the grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) system has gained significant popularity all over the world. The modular multilevel cascaded (MMC) inverter is the natural choice for step-up transformer and line filter less direct medium voltage grid integration of solar PV systems. However, power quality and loss are the important issues while connecting the PV system to the medium voltage grid through MMC inverter. Modulation technique is the key to maintain output power quality, e.g., total harmonic distortion (THD) and to ensure low switching and conduction losses. In this paper, an advanced modulation technique named “triangle saturated common mode pulse width modulation (TSCMPWM)” control is proposed for a 3-phase 5-level MMC inverter-based grid-tied PV system. Compared to traditional modulation techniques, the proposed TSCMPWM control offers the lowest voltage THD as well as lower inverter power losses. Performance of the proposed mo... [more]

Multivariable Deadbeat Control of Power Electronics Converters with Fast Dynamic Response and Fixed Switching Frequency
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy management, Model Predictive Control, power converters, soft deadbeat algorithm
Power converters have turned into a critical and every-day solution for electric power systems. In fact, the incorporation of renewable energies has led towards the constant improvement of power converter topologies and their controls. In this context, over the last 10 years, model predictive control (MPC) is positioned as one the most studied and promising alternatives for power converter control. In voltage source inverters (VSI), MPC has only been applied in the inner current control loop, accelerating and improving its dynamic response, but as mentioned, has been limited only to the current control loop. The fastest of the MPC techniques is the Deadbeat (DB) control, and in this paper, it is proposed to employ DB control on the entire system, therefore accelerating the time response not only for the current loops, but also for voltage loops. At the same time, this avoids overshoots and overpower in order to protect the power converter, leading to the fastest dynamic response accord... [more]

Construction of a Frequency Compliant Unit Commitment Framework Using an Ensemble Learning Technique
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Control Performance Standard 1 (CPS1), frequency control, Machine Learning, unit commitment
Frequency control is essential to ensure reliability and quality of power systems. North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s (NERC) Control Performance Standard 1 (CPS1) is widely adopted by many operating authorities to examine the quality of the frequency control. The operating authority would have a strong interest in knowing how the frequency-sensitive features affect the CPS1 score and finding out more effective unit-dispatch schedules for reaching the CPS1 goal. As frequency-sensitive features usually possess multi-variable and high-correlated characteristics, this paper employed an ensemble learning technique (the Gradient Boosting Decision Tree algorithm, GBDT) to construct Frequency Response Model (FRM) of the Taipower system in Taiwan to evaluate by CPS1 score. The proposed CPS1 model was then integrated with Unit Commitment (UC) program to determine the unit-dispatch that achieves the targeted CPS1 score. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed CPS1-UC plat... [more]

Fault Detection in DC Microgrids Using Short-Time Fourier Transform
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Fault Detection, intelligent classifiers, Machine Learning, microgrid, short-time Fourier transform
Fault detection in microgrids presents a strong technical challenge due to the dynamic operating conditions. Changing the power generation and load impacts the current magnitude and direction, which has an adverse effect on the microgrid protection scheme. To address this problem, this paper addresses a field-transform-based fault detection method immune to the microgrid conditions. The faults are simulated via a Matlab/Simulink model of the grid-connected photovoltaics-based DC microgrid with battery energy storage. Short-time Fourier transform is applied to the fault time signal to obtain a frequency spectrum. Selected spectrum features are then provided to a number of intelligent classifiers. The classifiers’ scores were evaluated using the F1-score metric. Most classifiers proved to be reliable as their performance score was above 90%.

Improvement of Position Estimation of PMSMs Using an Iterative Vector Decoupling Algorithm
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AC machines, sensorless control, sensorless drive, synchronous machines
This paper presents an improvement of sensorless techniques based on anisotropy for the estimation of the electrical angular position of synchronous machines by means of an iterative algorithm. The presented method reduces the effect of the fourth saliency harmonics on the measured signals avoiding the use of an observer or filter, thus, no additional dynamics are introduced on the system. Instead, a static algorithm based on iterative steps is proposed, minimizing the angular position error. The algorithm is presented and applied using the DFC (Direct Flux Control) technique but it is not limited to this choice. The advantages and limitations of this method are presented within this paper. The proof of the algorithm convergence is given. Simulations and experimental tests are performed in order to prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Integrated Unfold-PCA Monitoring Application for Smart Buildings: An AHU Application Example
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AHU, BEM, FDD, HVAC, monitoring, MPCA, PCA, smart buildings, unfold
This paper presents a complete methodology, together with its implementation as a web application, for monitoring smart buildings. The approach uses unfold-Principal Component Analysis (unfold-PCA) as a batch projection method and two statistics, Hotelling’s T-squared (T2) and the squared prediction error (SPE), for alarm generation resulting in two simple control charts independently on the number of variables involved. The method consists of modelling the normal operating conditions of a building (entire building, room or subsystem) with latent variables described expressing the principal components. Thus, the method allows detecting faults and misbehaviour as a deviation of previously mentioned statistics from their statistical thresholds. Once a fault or misbehaviour is detected, the isolation of sensors that mostly contribute to such detection is proposed as a first step for diagnosis. The methodology has been implemented under a SaaS (software as a service) approach to be offered... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: COVID-19, economic resources, Energy, financial resources, healthcare capacity, medical surge, pandemic, resources
The availability of resources and their concentration in the place of greatest need, will not allow us to successfully overcome a medical surge without the energy required to activate these resources and activities, and increase their quantities if necessary, that is why the staff and management of healthcare institutions are forced to making ethical crisis decisions about who wins and who loses. This study highlights the versatility of the concept of ‘energy’ by attributing it to money or financial resources, which are highly essential in dealing with surges as the healthcare system adopts the appropriate capacity level. This study considers the means (space, staff, supplies, and specific resources) at the disposal of healthcare institutions for the control of diseases as economic resources to identify ways for enhancing their capacity, especially during periods of medical surges such as that caused by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Artificial lighting systems are used in commercial greenhouses to ensure year-round yields. Current Light Emitting Diode (LED) technologies improved the system efficiency. Nevertheless, having artificial lighting systems extended for hectares with power densities over 50W/m2 causes energy and power demand of greenhouses to be really significant. The present paper introduces an innovative supervisory and predictive control strategy to optimize the energy performance of the artificial lights of greenhouses. The controller has been implemented in a multi-span plastic greenhouse located in North Italy. The proposed control strategy has been tested on a greenhouse of 1 hectare with a lighting system with a nominal power density of 50 Wm−2 requiring an overall power supply of 1 MW for a period of 80 days. Improved Procedure for Earth Fault Loop Impedance Measurement in TN Low-Voltage Network
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electrical fault detection, electrical safety, power distribution, power grids
The difficulties and uncertainties related to earth fault loop impedance measurement are addressed in this paper. Based on the presentation of the measurement procedure implemented in the test equipment (diagrams and measured quantities, respectively, interpretation of results), the shortcomings and errors that accompany it are highlighted. The position in the power system, the influence of power transformers, and the use of effective quantities instead of phasors are important sources of errors, but, as will be seen, the switching of loads at the consumer sides and/or the occurrence of fault regimes during measurements can lead to the most serious impairment of the accuracy in the impedance assessment. The clarification of these aspects is achieved, both starting from the equivalent diagrams of the measurement circuits and the analytical interpretation of the phenomena associated with the measurements, as well as based on the modeling and simulation of TN low-voltage electrical distri... Very Low Sampling Frequency Model Predictive Control for Power Converters in the Medium and High-Power Range Applications
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AC-DC power converters, high power applications, low switching frequency, predictive control, solar power generation
Several control strategies have been proposed with the aim to get a desired behavior in the power converter variables. The most employed control techniques are linear control, nonlinear control based on linear and nonlinear feedback, and predictive control. The controllers associated with linear and nonlinear algorithms usually have a fixed switching frequency, featuring a defined spectrum given by the pulse width modulation (PWM) or space vector modulation (SVM) time period. On the other hand, finite set model predictive control (FS-MPC) is known to present a variable switching frequency that results too high for high power applications, increasing losses, reducing the switches lifetime and, therefore, limiting its application. This paper proposes a predictive control approach using a very low sampling frequency, allowing the use of predictive control in high power applications. April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: forecasting, Hydroelectric Power, Machine Learning, resources managing, telemetry
Hydroelectric power plants’ operational decisions are associated with several factors, such as generation planning, water availability and dam safety. One major challenge is to control the water spillage from the reservoir. Although this action represents a loss of energy production, it is a powerful strategy to regulate the reservoir level, ensuring the dam’s safety. The decision to use this strategy must be made in advance based on level and demand predictions. The present work applies supervised machine learning techniques to predict the operating condition of spillage in a hydroelectric plant for 5 h ahead. The use of this method, in real time, aims to assist the operator so that he can make more assertive and safer decisions, avoiding waste of energy resources and increasing the safety of dams. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional two-stage charger, electric vehicle, Model Predictive Control
This paper presents the four-quadrant operation modes of bidirectional chargers for electric vehicles (EVs) framed in smart car parks. A cascaded model predictive control (MPC) scheme for the bidirectional two-stage off-board chargers is proposed. The controller is constructed in two stages. The model predictive direct power control for the grid side is applied to track the active/reactive power references. With this MPC strategy, EV chargers are able to transmit the active and reactive powers between the EV batteries and the power grid. Apart from exchanging the active power, the vehicle-for-grid (V4G) mode is proposed, where the chargers are used to deliver the reactive power to support the grid, simultaneously combined with grid-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-grid operation modes. The demand for electricity is increased due to the development of the industry, the electrification of transport, the rise of household demand, and the increase in demand for digitally connected devices and air conditioning systems. For that, solutions and actions should be developed for greater consumers of electricity. For instance, MG (Micro-grid) buildings are one of the main consumers of electricity, and if they are correctly constructed, controlled, and operated, a significant energy saving can be attained. As a solution, hybrid RES (renewable energy source) systems are proposed, offering the possibility for simple consumers to be producers of electricity. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: grid-connected inverter, Lyapunov stability, nonlinear controller, proportional resonant control
This paper proposes a high-performance control technique based on Lyapunov’s stability theory for a single-phase grid-connected neutral-point-clamped quasi-impedance source inverter with LCL filter. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current-sharing capacitor, LED driver, LLC resonant converter
In this paper, an LLC light-emitting diode (LLC LED) driver based on the current-sharing capacitor is presented. In the proposed LED driver, the LLC resonant converter is used to step down the high input voltage, to provide galvanic isolation, to offer a constant current for LEDs. Moreover, the current-sharing capacitor connected to the central-tapped point of the secondary-side winding is used to balance the currents in two LED strings. By doing so, the voltage stress on this capacitor is quite low. Above all, the equivalent forward voltages of the two LED strings are generally influenced by the temperature and the LED current, and this does not affect the current-sharing performance, as will be demonstrated by experiment on the difference in number of LEDs between the two LED strings. In addition, only the current in one LED string is sensed and controlled by negative feedback control, while the current in the other LED string is determined by the current-sharing capacitor. Keywords: fuzzy logic controller, induction motor, quadratic V/f, sliding mode controller, solar PV water pumping systems
In rural and remote areas, solar photovoltaic energy (PV) water pumping systems (SPWPSs) are being favored over diesel-powered water pumping due to environmental and economic considerations. PV is a clean source of electric energy offering low operational and maintenance cost.
