Dynamic Stall Control on the Wind Turbine Airfoil via a Co-Flow Jet
November 28, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: co-flow jet, dynamic stall, flow control, numerical simulation, wind turbine
Dynamic stall control of a S809 airfoil is numerically investigated by implementing a co-flow jet (CFJ). The numerical methods of the solver are validated by comparing results with the baseline experiment as well as a NACA 6415-based CFJ experiment, showing good agreement in both static and dynamic characteristics. The CFJ airfoil with inactive jet is simulated to study the impact that the jet channel imposes upon the dynamic characteristics. It is shown that the presence of a long jet channel could cause a negative effect of decreasing lift and increasing drag, leading to fluctuating extreme loads in terms of drag and moment. The main focus of the present research is the investigation of the dynamic characteristics of the CFJ airfoil with three different jet momentum coefficients, which are compared with the baseline, giving encouraging results. Dynamic stall can be greatly suppressed, showing a very good control performance of significantly increased lift and reduced drag and moment.... [more]

Development of Near Optimal Rule-Based Control for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles Taking into Account Drivetrain Component Losses
November 28, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: drivetrain component losses, dynamic programming (DP), mode control strategy, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)
A near-optimal rule-based mode control (RBC) strategy was proposed for a target plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) taking into account the drivetrain losses. Individual loss models were developed for drivetrain components including the gears, planetary gear (PG), bearings, and oil pump, based on experimental data and mathematical governing equations. Also, a loss model for the power electronic system was constructed, including loss from the motor-generator while rotating in the unloaded state. To evaluate the effect of the drivetrain losses on the operating mode control strategy, backward simulations were performed using dynamic programming (DP). DP selects the operating mode, which provides the highest efficiency for given driving conditions. It was found that the operating mode selection changes when drivetrain losses are included, depending on driving conditions. An operating mode schedule was developed with respect to the wheel power and vehicle speed, and based on the operatin... [more]

A Novel Single Winding Structure and Closed Loop Control of the Suspension Force Vector of Bearingless Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors
November 27, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bearingless permanent magnet synchronous motors (BPMSM), closed loop control of suspension force vector, finite element analysis (FEA), simulation and experiment, T-shaped single winding configuration
At present, because of their advantages of simple structure, low cost, low power consumption and high efficiency, single winding bearingless permanent magnet synchronous motors (SBPMSMs) have become one of the research hotspots in the bearingless technology field. However, a high motional-electromotive force (EMF) is generated by rotor rotation in the single winding, which already has side-effects on the normal suspension force current, and the suspension force response can be delayed. Because the method of double torque current inverse injection in the symmetrical winding allows the motional-EMFs of the corresponding phase windings to offset each other in the opposite direction, with no adverse effects on original performance, a T-shaped single winding configuration is proposed to realize precisely that effect. In this paper, the analytical expressions of the radial suspension force and torque are deduced and the motional-EMF and performance are analyzed by finite element method using... [more]

Experiments on the Performance of Small Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine with Passive Pitch Control by Disk Pulley
November 27, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: blade element momentum theory, disk pulley, passive pitch control, small horizontal axis wind turbine
The present work is to design a passive pitch-control mechanism for small horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) to generate stable power at high wind speeds. The mechanism uses a disk pulley as an actuator to passively adjust the pitch angle of blades by centrifugal force. For this design, aerodynamic braking is caused by the adjustment of pitch angles at high wind speeds. As a marked advantage, this does not require mechanical brakes that would incur electrical burn-out and structural failure under high speed rotation. This can ensure the survival of blades and generator in sever operation environments. In this paper, the analysis uses blade element momentum theory (BEMT) to develop graphical user interface software to facilitate the performance assessment of the small-scale HAWT using passive pitch control (PPC). For verification, the HAWT system was tested in a full-scale wind tunnel for its aerodynamic performance. At low wind speeds, this system performed the same as usual, yet at h... [more]

The Study of Fuzzy Proportional Integral Controllers Based on Improved Particle Swarm Optimization for Permanent Magnet Direct Drive Wind Turbine Converters
November 27, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: converter, fuzzy PI controller, particle swarm optimization (PSO), permanent magnet direct drive (PMDD) wind turbine
In order to meet the requirements of high precision and fast response of permanent magnet direct drive (PMDD) wind turbines, this paper proposes a fuzzy proportional integral (PI) controller associated with a new control strategy for wind turbine converters. The purpose of the control strategy is to achieve the global optimization for the quantization factors, ke and kec, and scale factors, kup and kui, of the fuzzy PI controller by an improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) method. Thus the advantages of the rapidity of the improved PSO and the robustness of the fuzzy controller can be fully applied in the control process. By conducting simulations for 2 MW PMDD wind turbines with Matlab/Simulink, the performance of the fuzzy PI controller based on the improved PSO is demonstrated to be obviously better than that of the PI controller or the fuzzy PI controller without using the improved PSO under the situation when the wind speed changes suddenly.

November 27, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: decoupled vector control, dynamic programming, Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm, neural network (NN) vector control, single-phase grid-connected converter (GCC)
This paper investigates a novel recurrent neural network (NN)-based vector control approach for single-phase grid-connected converters (GCCs) with L (inductor), LC (inductor-capacitor) and LCL (inductor-capacitor-inductor) filters and provides their comparison study with the conventional standard vector control method. A single neural network controller replaces two current-loop PI controllers, and the NN training approximates the optimal control for the single-phase GCC system. The Levenberg⁻Marquardt (LM) algorithm was used to train the NN controller based on the complete system equations without any decoupling policies. The proposed NN approach can solve the decoupling problem associated with the conventional vector control methods for L, LC and LCL-filter-based single-phase GCCs. Both simulation study and hardware experiments demonstrate that the neural network vector controller shows much more improved performance than that of conventional vector controllers, including faster resp... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: battery management system (BMS), electric vehicle (EV), hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), Li-ion battery ageing, vehicle vibration
Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are using cylindrical format cells as part of the vehicle’s rechargeable energy storage system (RESS). In a recent study focused at determining the ageing behavior of 2.2 Ah Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC) Lithium-Ion 18650 battery cells, significant increases in the ohmic resistance (RO) were observed post vibration testing. Typically a reduction in capacity was also noted. The vibration was representative of an automotive service life of 100,000 miles of European and North American customer operation. This paper presents a study which defines the effect that the change in electrical properties of vibration aged 18650 NMC cells can have on the control strategy employed by the battery management system (BMS) of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). It also proposes various cell balancing strategies to manage these changes in electrical properties. Subsequently this study recommends that EV manufacturers conduct vibration testing as part of their cell... [more]

November 27, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: charge and discharge threshold, control strategy, energy storage system (ESS), supercapacitor, traction substation, train braking characteristics
Recuperation of braking energy offers great potential for reducing energy consumption in urban rail transit systems. The present paper develops a new control strategy with variable threshold for wayside energy storage systems (ESSs), which uses the supercapacitor as the energy storage device. Next, in order to achieve the best energy-saving effect, the paper discusses the selection principle of the charge and discharge threshold. This paper proposes a control strategy for wayside supercapacitors integrated with dynamic threshold adjustment control on the basis of avoiding the onboard braking chopper’s operation. The proposed control strategy is very useful for obtaining good performance, while not wasting any energy in the braking resistor. Therefore, the control strategy has been verified through simulations, and e... [more]

Sliding-Mode Control of a Charger/Discharger DC/DC Converter for DC-Bus Regulation in Renewable Power Systems
November 27, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive controller, bidirectional DC/DC converter, critically damped response, energy storage device, sliding-mode controller, underdamped response
Stand-alone power systems based on renewable energy sources are used to replace generators based on fossil fuels. Those renewable power systems also require Energy Storage Devices (ESD) interfaced by a charger/discharger power converter, which consist of a bidirectional DC/DC converter, and a DC bus. This paper proposes a single sliding-mode controller (SMC) for the charger/discharger DC/DC converter to provide a stable DC bus voltage in any operation condition: charging or discharging the ESD, or even without any power exchange between the ESD and the DC bus. Due to the non-linear nature of the power converter, the SMC parameters are adapted on-line to ensure global stability in any operation condition. Such stability of the adaptive SMC is mathematically demonstrated using analytical expressions for the transversality, reachability and equivalent control conditions. Moreover, a design procedure for the adaptive SMC parameters is provided in order to ensure the dynamic response requir... [more]

A Novel Secondary Control for Microgrid Based on Synergetic Control of Multi-Agent System
November 27, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: globally asymptotic stability, microgrid, multi-agent system, secondary control, synergetic control
In power systems, the secondary control is a very useful way to restore the system frequency and voltage to the rated value. This paper tries to propose a secondary frequency and voltage control of islanded microgrids based on the distributed synergetic control of multi-agent systems. In the proposed control, since each distributed generation only requires its own information and that of the neighbors, the secondary control is fully distributed. The system is more reliable because the central controller and complex communication network are reduced in the distributed structure. Based on multi-agent systems, the dynamic model is established, and distributed synergetic control algorithms are given to design the secondary control of the islanded microgrid. Meanwhile, the system has globally asymptotic stability under the proposed control, which is proved by the direct Lyapunov method. Simulation results about a test microgrid are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control.

Control and Optimization of a Variable-Pitch Quadrotor with Minimum Power Consumption
November 27, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive compensation, minimum power consumption, steady-state identification, steady-state optimization, variable-pitch quadrotor
Recently, there has been a rapid growth of interest in quadrotors with electric variable-pitch propellers. The control and optimization of such propellers are important factors for improving the flight performance of the vehicles. Therefore, the steady-state identification method to estimate the parameters of the mathematical model of the electric variable-pitch propeller is developed. The steady-state control and optimization scheme with minimum power consumption and the adaptive compensation scheme for the variable-pitch propeller are then proposed, based on which the response performance of the lift force produced by the variable-pitch propeller can be greatly improved by using a cascade compensation scheme. Furthermore, the direct lift-based flight control strategy is presented, which can significantly contribute to the improvement of the flight performance, precisely because the roll, pitch, yaw and vertical channels of the variable-pitch quadrotor are approximately linearized and... An Improved Current Control Strategy for a Grid-Connected Inverter under Distorted Grid Conditions
November 27, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current control, distorted grid conditions, DSP TMS320F28335, grid-connected inverter, model decomposition, moving average filter
This paper presents an improved current control strategy for a three-phase grid-connected inverter under distorted grid conditions. The main challenge associated with the grid-connected inverter in distributed generation (DG) systems is to maintain the harmonic contents in output current below the specified values even when the grid is subject to uncertain disturbances such as harmonic distortion. To overcome such a challenge, an improved current control scheme is proposed for a grid-connected inverter, in which the fundamental and harmonic currents are independently controlled by a proportional-integral (PI) decoupling controller and a predictive basis controller, respectively. The controller design approach is based on the model decomposition method, where the measured inverter currents and grid voltages are divided into the fundamental and harmonic components by means of moving average filters (MAFs). Moreover, to detect the angular displacement and angular frequency with better acc... [more]

A New Robust Decoupled Control of the Stator Active and Reactive Currents for Grid-Connected Doubly-Fed Induction Generators
November 27, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: decoupled control, doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), grid-connected, variable speed
This paper addresses the grid-connected variable speed doubly-fed induction generator, and proposes a new decoupled control to replace the conventional decoupled active and reactive powers (P-Q) control. The proposed decoupled control is based on decoupling the stator active and reactive currents, in contrast with the conventional decoupled P-Q control, which is based on decoupling the stator active and reactive powers by forcing the stator d- or q-voltage to zero. The proposed decoupled control has all the advantages of the conventional decoupled P-Q control such as constant switching frequency and robustness against slip angle inaccuracy, and it has some additional advantages: The proposed control requires less machine parameters; for the controller design, it requires the stator-to-rotor turns ratio only; for the online calculation, it does not requires any machine parameter. The proposed decoupled control is more flexible and robust since the control is independent of the grid volt... [more]

November 27, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bio-inspired algorithm, Energy Efficiency, energy-efficient cellular network, flocking model, green base station, power control algorithm
Most of the energy used to operate a cellular network is consumed by a base station (BS), and reducing the transmission power of a BS can therefore afford a substantial reduction in the amount of energy used in a network. In this paper, we propose a distributed transmit power control (TPC) algorithm inspired by bird flocking behavior as a means of improving the energy efficiency of a cellular network. Just as each bird in a flock attempts to match its velocity with the average velocity of adjacent birds, in the proposed algorithm, each mobile station (MS) in a cell matches its rate with the average rate of the co-channel MSs in adjacent cells by controlling the transmit power of its serving BS. We verify that this bio-inspired TPC algorithm using a local rate-average process achieves an exponential convergence and maximizes the minimum rate of the MSs concerned. Simulation results show that the proposed TPC algorithm follows the same convergence properties as the flocking algorithm and... [more]

Improved Sensorless Control of Interior Permanent Magnet Sensorless Motors Using an Active Damping Control Strategy
November 27, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active damping, extended electromotive force, interior permanent magnet motor, parameter variation, position estimator, sensorless drive
This paper proposes the active damping control strategy for position sensorless operation of an interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor. The proposed method is applied to both the current controller and the position estimator to control damping characteristics of the IPM drive system. By actively increasing the damping characteristics of the system with the proposed method, the current control and the position estimation loops become immune to parameter variation of the stator resistance which may degrade the accuracy of the position estimator. To analyze the accuracy of the position estimator with and without the proposed method, a small-signal analysis is carried out for low speed operation where the effect of the parameter variation is relatively large due to a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Additionally, an open-loop voltage to angular velocity transfer function including the electrical and the mechanical parameters is investigated. Since no hardware modifications are necessary, th... November 16, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional DC/DC converter, chaotic modulation, electric and hybrid vehicles, Energy Conversion, shifted-phase angle based control
Three-port isolated (TPI) bidirectional DC/DC converters have three energy ports and offer advantages of large voltage gain, galvanic isolation ability and high power density. For this reason this kind of converters are suitable to connect different energy sources and loads in electric and hybrid vehicles. The purpose of this paper is to propose chaotic modulation and the related control scheme for TPI bidirectional DC/DC converters, in such a way that the switching harmonic peaks can be suppressed in spectrum and the conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) is reduced. Two chaotic modulation strategies, namely the continuously chaotic modulation and the discretely chaotic modulation are presented. These two chaotic modulation strategies are applied for TPI bidirectional DC/DC converters with shifted-phase angle based control and phase-shifted PWM control. Both simulation and experiments are given to verify the validity of the proposed chaotic modulation-based control schemes.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), low voltage ride-through (LVRT), passivity-based control (PBC), wind energy conversion systems (WECS)
An innovative control strategy is proposed for enhancing the low voltage ride-through (LVRT) capability of a doubly fed induction generator based on wind energy conversion systems (DFIG-WECS). Within the proposed control method, the current control loops of the rotor side converter (RSC) are developed based on passivity theory. The first term based on the maximal voltage of GSC is introduced in the GSC control loops as a reference reactive current. The second one reflecting the instantaneous unbalanced power flow between the RSC and GSC is also introduced in the GSC control loops as a disturbance considering the instantaneous power of the grid filter to compensate the instantaneous rotor power. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified via time domain simulation of a 2.0 MW-575 V DFIG-WECS using PSCAD/EMTP. Simulation res... [more]

Diesel-Minimal Combustion Control of a Natural Gas-Diesel Engine
October 23, 2018 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: closed-loop control, combustion control, Diesel, dual fuel, engine control, extremum seeking, internal combustion engine, Natural Gas, Optimization
This paper investigates the combustion phasing control of natural gas-diesel engines. In this study, the combustion phasing is influenced by manipulating the start and the duration of the diesel injection. Instead of using both degrees of freedom to control the center of combustion only, we propose a method that simultaneously controls the combustion phasing and minimizes the amount of diesel used. Minimizing the amount of diesel while keeping the center of combustion at a constant value is formulated as an optimization problem with an equality constraint. A combination of feedback control and extremum seeking is used to solve this optimization problem online. The necessity to separate the different time scales is discussed and a structure is proposed that facilitates this separation for this specific example. The proposed method is validated by experiments on a test bench.
