Series Architecture on Hybrid Electric Vehicles: A Review
Alessandro Benevieri, Lorenzo Carbone, Simone Cosso, Krishneel Kumar, Mario Marchesoni, Massimiliano Passalacqua, Luis Vaccaro
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Fuel Economy, Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), Powertrain Efficiency, Series Architecture, Silicon Carbide (SiC), Supercapacitor, Turbocompound
The use of series architecture nowadays is mainly on hybrid buses. In comparison with series-parallel and parallel architectures, which are usually exploited on medium-size cars, the series architecture allows achieving internal combustion engine higher efficiency. The downside of this architecture, due to a double energy conversion (i.e., mechanical energy converted in electrical energy and electrical energy converted again in mechanical energy), is that additional losses are introduced. For this reason, the parallel and the series/parallel architectures were considered more suitable for hybrid medium-size cars. Nevertheless, the use of new technologies can change this scenario. Regarding storage systems, supercapacitors achieved a significant energy density, and they guarantee much higher efficiency than battery storage. Moreover, the use of wide-bandgap components for power electronic converters, such as silicon carbide devices, assure lower losses. In this scenario, the series arch... [more]

Toshiki Tsubota, Shion Tsuchiya, Tatsuya Kusumoto, Dimitrios Kalderis
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: activated carbon, biochar, electric double-layer capacitor, Energy Storage, flame-curtain pyrolysis
Pine tree biochar produced by flame-curtain pyrolysis, an inexpensive and simple pyrolysis methodology, was used as the starting material for KOH-activated carbon. Flame-curtain pyrolysis is a simple, low-technology methodology that can be performed by non-specialized personnel. The elemental analysis of the biochars highlighted the high reproducibility of the process. The N2 adsorption isotherms indicated that KOH activation was effective for the preparation of high-surface-area activated carbons from the biochar. The BET specific surface area increased with the quantity of KOH added in the activation process, achieving a maximum value of 3014 m2 g−1 at 85.7 wt.% of KOH addition. The adsorption isotherms of all samples were IUPAC type I, establishing their microporous nature. Results from the Mikhail−Brunauer (MP) method and αs plot indicated that the pore size distribution became wider and the pore volume increased as the KOH content increased. The measured capacitance values followe... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: fungal pretreatment, pellet quality, pelletization, solid-state fermentation, switchgrass
Fungal pretreatment of switchgrass using Phanerochaete chrysosporium (PC), Trametes versicolor 52J (TV52J), and the Trametes versicolor mutant strain (m4D) under solid-state fermentation was conducted to improve its pellet quality. For all three fungal strains, the fermentation temperature had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on pellet unit density and tensile strength. The p-values of the quadratic models for all the response variables showed highly significant regression models (p < 0.01) except for dimensional stability. In addition, 3.1-fold and 2.8-fold increase in pellet tensile strength were obtained from P. chrysosporium- and T. versicolor 52J-treated materials, respectively. Microstructural examination showed that fungal pretreatment reduced pores in the pellets and enhanced pellet particle bonding. Among the fungal strains, PC had the shortest optimum fermentation time (21 d) and most positive impact on the pellet tensile strength and hydrophobicity. Therefore, switchgra... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analog to digital converter, field programmable gate array, finite control set model predictive control, finite state machine, intellectual property core, resource optimization, voltage source inverter
Recent advances in power converter applications with highly demanding control goals require the efficient implementation of superior control strategies. However, the real-time application of such control strategies demands high computational power that necessitates efficient digital controllers like field programmable gate array (FPGA). The inherent parallelism offered by FPGAs minimizes the execution time and exhibits an excellent cost-performance trade-off. In addition, rapid advancements in FPGA technology with a broad portfolio of intellectual property (IP) cores, design tools, and robust embedded processors resulted in a design paradigm shift. This article proposes a low-cost solution for the resource-optimized implementation of dynamic, highly accurate, and computationally intensive finite state-predictive direct current control (FS-PDCC). The challenges for implementing complex control algorithms for power converters are discussed in detail, and the control is implemented in Int... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC/DC converter, fault diagnosis, FDI, IFDI, predictive maintenance
The reliability of systems and components is a fundamental need for the efficient development of a smart distribution grid. In fact, the presence of a fault in one component of the grid could potentially lead to a service interruption and loss of profit. Since faults cannot be avoided, the introduction of a diagnostic scheme could predict the fault of a component in order to carry out predictive maintenance. In this framework, this paper proposes a novel Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) scheme for AC/DC converters in MV/LV substations. In order to improve the reliability of the FDI procedure, the system architecture includes also an Instrument Fault Detection and Isolation section for identifying faults that could occur on the instruments and sensors involved in the monitoring process of the AC/DC converter. The proposed architecture is scalable, easily upgradable, and uses cost-effective sensors. Tests, carried out on a real test site, have demonstrated the efficacy of the proposal... [more]

Paweł Bryła
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CETSCALE, consumer ethnocentrism, country of origin (COO), Food Choice Questionnaire (FCQ), food consumption, food market, gender differences, local food, Schwartz values, theory of human values
This paper aims to identify predictors of consumer ethnocentrism in the food market. An online survey was conducted in a sample of 1000 Polish consumers, which was representative by sex, age, education level, urban−rural divide, and region. The 10-item CETSCALE was applied. In a retrograde stepwise regression model, consumer ethnocentrism in the food market was positively related to tradition and conformity Schwartz values, to the pride of being Polish, and to such product characteristics as the country of origin, distance from the producer, and natural content. It was negatively related to the universalism value and to being a student. To gain further insights into the predictors of consumer ethnocentrism in the food market for either gender, separate regressions were conducted among men and women. Three predictors affected positively and significantly consumer ethnocentrism in the food market both among men and among women, namely the tradition Schwartz value, pride of being Polish,... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: CSR, digitalization, economic practices, energy sector companies, environmental practices, social practices
This paper explores relationships among CSR practices in the social, economic and environmental dimensions and digitization in the Polish energy companies. The study used the CATI method, and the data obtained from 110 companies was analyzed using a set of methods starting with correlation analysis, through regression analysis, including backward stepwise regression. Obtained results led to the formulation of SEM (Structural Equitation Modelling) model that has been tested. Results confirm the influence of social CSR practices on practices in economics and environmental CSR dimensions and on the level of digitalization. Research also suggests that there is essentially no significant impact of the size of the enterprise on the level of digitalization, as well as on any of the analyzed types of CSR practices.

Seung-Il Baek, Joon Ahn
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: film cooling, gas turbine cooling, large eddy simulation, Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulation
The effects of pulsations in the main flow on film cooling from a cylindrical hole with a spanwise injection angle (orientation angle) are analyzed using numerical methods. The hole is located on a flat plate with a 35° inclined injection angle, and the compound angle denotes the orientation and inclination angles. The film cooling flow fields for the sinusoidal flow pulsation of 36 Hz from a cylindrical hole with 0° and 30° orientation angles at the time-averaged blowing ratio of M = 0.5 are simulated via large eddy simulation (LES). The CFD results are validated using the experimental data and compared to the Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) and URANS results. The results reveal that if the pulsation frequency goes from 0 to 36 Hz, the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness decreases regardless of the compound angle; however, the film cooling for the 30° orientation angle exhibits better performance than that for a simple angle (0°). Moreover, if 36 Hz pulsation is applied, the f... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon emissions, decarbonization, district heating, Energy Efficiency, Hubgrade
Harmful emissions from heating installations have recently received public attention in Poland. Polish municipalities mainly take their heat from local district heating networks with large-scale coal-fired heat sources. Today, transition to nonemissive sources on this scale would be impractical. The easiest way to reduce carbon emissions is to limit heat consumption, but at the same time, to preserve thermal comfort, the application of smart technologies is necessary. Veolia operates on 71 district heating systems in Poland, including Warsaw, Lodz, and Poznan. Since heat consumption in Warsaw and Metropolis GZM is at a similar level, this is a case study of Hubgrade automation system application within the Warsaw district heating network. This paper also presents results of simulation of harmful emission reduction potential in Metropolis GZM. Simulation results show that there is a potential for saving approximately 275 kt of CO2 for the whole Metropolis GZM.

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy in buildings, energy management systems, energy systems, ensemble models, forecasting, Machine Learning, multi-objective genetic algorithms
The increasing levels of energy consumption worldwide is raising issues with respect to surpassing supply limits, causing severe effects on the environment, and the exhaustion of energy resources. Buildings are one of the most relevant sectors in terms of energy consumption; as such, efficient Home or Building Management Systems are an important topic of research. This study discusses the use of ensemble techniques in order to improve the performance of artificial neural networks models used for energy forecasting in residential houses. The case study is a residential house, located in Portugal, that is equipped with PV generation and battery storage and controlled by a Home Energy Management System (HEMS). It has been shown that the ensemble forecasting results are superior to single selected models, which were already excellent. A simple procedure was proposed for selecting the models to be used in the ensemble, together with a heuristic to determine the number of models.

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building performance, cob-building, dynamic simulation, earth construction, heating energy, sustainable thermal comfort
This paper emphasizes the experimental and numerical study of new cob mixes used for insulation and load bearing wall elements. The experimental study provides complete datasets of thermal properties of the new walling materials, using cob with density ranging from 1107 kg/m3 to 1583 kg/m3 for structural walls and less than 700 kg m−3 for insulation walls. Various mixes of French soils and fibres (reed, wheat straw, hemp shiv, hemp straw, and flax straw) with different water contents are studied. The lowest average thermal conductivity is obtained for the structural cob mix prepared of 5% wheat straw and 31% of water content. The insulation mix, prepared with 25% reed and 31% water content, has the lowest thermal conductivity. Investigation of diffusivity, density, and heat capacity shows that, when thermal conductivity is lower than 0.4 W m−1 K−1, the decrease in cob density leads to better insulation values and higher heat capacity. Little variation is noticed regarding the density a... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: accessibility, condition base monitoring (CBM), condition-monitoring, cumulative lifecycle costs, integrity maintenance reliability (IMR), LCC, levelized cost of energy (LCOE), O&M plan, O&M strategies/alternatives, risk-based inspection and maintenance analysis (RIMAP)
Due to the extreme marine operating environment, the remoteness from the maintenance base, and the expensive specialized accessibility and overhaul equipment needed (e.g., barges, boats, ships, and vessels), offshore O&M costs are greater than those for onshore-based installations. In the operation of wind farms, the main challenges are related to sudden and unexpected failures and downtimes. This paper has three main objectives. The first is to compare and optimize implementation techniques for maintenance strategies. The second is to analyze the cost-benefit of each maintenance strategy model. The third objective is to demonstrate the optimization and effectiveness of maintenance procedures and strategies recreated with stochastic and probabilistic life cycle cost (LCC) models, depending upon the degree of reliability and the maintenance process for offshore wind farms. The cost of operation and maintenance is directly dependent on failure rates, spare parts costs, and the time requi... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic analysis, green hydrogen, hydrogen storage system, photovoltaic, renewable energies, solid-oxide cell
The production of “green hydrogen” is currently one of the hottest topics in the field of renewable energy systems research. Hydrogen storage is also becoming more and more attractive as a flexible solution to mitigate the power fluctuations of solar energy systems. The most promising technology for electricity-to-hydrogen conversion, and vice versa, is the reversible solid-oxide cell (SOC). This device is still very expensive, but it exhibits excellent performance under dynamic operating conditions compared to the competing devices. This work presents the dynamic simulation of a prototypal renewable plant combining a 50 kW photovoltaic (PV) field with a 50 kW solid-oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) and a compressed hydrogen tank. The electricity is used to meet the energy demand of a dwelling located in the area of Campi Flegrei (Naples). The SOC efficiency is simulated by developing a mathematical model in MATLAB®. The model also calculates the cell operating temperature as a function o... [more]
MLP-Based Model for Estimation of Methane Seam Pressure
Marta Skiba, Barbara Dutka, Mariusz Młynarczuk
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural networks (ANN), gas seam pressure, geological hazard, multilayer perceptron (MLP)
One of the principal indicators of the methane hazard in coal mines is gas pressure. This parameter directly affects the methane content in the seam as well as the rate of its release resulting from mining operations. Because of limitations in the existing methods for methane seam pressure measuring, primarily technical difficulties associated with direct measurement and the time-consuming nature of indirect measurement, this parameter is often disregarded in the coal and gas outburst forecasts. To overcome the above-mentioned difficulties, an attempt was made to estimate the methane seam pressure with the use of artificial neural networks. Two MLP-based models were developed to estimate the average and maximum methane seam pressure values, respectively. The analyses demonstrated high correlation between the values indicated by the neural models and the reference values determined on the basis of sorption isotherms. According to the adopted fit criterion, the prediction errors for the... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: annual performance, cold-standby, heat recovery, hot-standby, methanation, power to substitute natural gas (PtSNG)
Power to substitute natural gas (PtSNG) is a promising technology to store intermittent renewable electricity as synthetic fuel. Power surplus on the electric grid is converted to hydrogen via water electrolysis and then to SNG via CO2 methanation. The SNG produced can be directly injected into the natural gas infrastructure for long-term and large-scale energy storage. Because of the fluctuating behaviour of the input energy source, the overall annual plant efficiency and SNG production are affected by the plant operation time and the standby strategy chosen. The re-use of internal (waste) heat for satisfying the energy requirements during critical moments can be crucial to achieving high annual efficiencies. In this study, the heat recovery from a PtSNG plant coupled with wind energy, based on proton exchange membrane electrolysis, adiabatic fixed bed methanation and membrane technology for SNG upgrading, is investigated. The proposed thermal recovery strategy involves the waste heat... [more]
The Impacts of Shanghai’s July 2019 Municipal Domestic Waste Management Regulations on Energy Production
Changjun Li, Firooz Firoozmand, Marie K. Harder
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, energy production, food waste, Shanghai, waste management
Cities all over the world are trying to divert municipal waste away from landfill and fossil fuel-assisted incineration and toward circular economies where waste is converted into new resources. Residential food waste is the most challenging sub-stream, as it is the worst culprit in producing greenhouse gases in landfill and incineration, and it is almost impossible to have residents separate it cleanly at source. Here we investigate the outstanding diversion results of Shanghai Municipality since the introduction of the July 2019 Municipal Regulations, of over 9600 tons per day of clean food waste, still maintained two years later. In particular, we question why they might have increased so sharply after July 2019 and examine historic policies to determine broad policy intentions, their implementations, and officially reported tonnages of different resulting waste streams. It was found that many prior steps included infrastructure building and piloting different behavioral approaches.... [more]
Wake Expansion and the Finite Blade Functions for Horizontal-Axis Wind Turbines
David Wood
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade element analysis, expanding flow, finite blade functions, horizontal axis wind turbine, induced velocities, tip loss factor
This paper considers the effect of wake expansion on the finite blade functions in blade element/momentum theory for horizontal-axis wind turbines. For any velocity component, the function is the ratio of the streamtube average to that at the blade elements. In most cases, the functions are set by the trailing vorticity only and Prandtl’s tip loss factor can be a reasonable approximation to the axial and circumferential functions at sufficiently high tip speed ratio. Nevertheless, important cases like coned or swept rotors or shrouded turbines involve more complex blade functions than provided by the tip loss factor or its recent modifications. Even in the presence of significant wake expansion, the functions derived from the exact solution for the flow due to constant pitch and radius helical vortices provide accurate estimates for the axial and circumferential blade functions. Modifying the vortex pitch in response to the expansion improves the accuracy of the latter. The modified fu... [more]
Cool Roofs in the US: The Impact of Roof Reflectivity, Insulation and Attachment Method on Annual Energy Cost
Athanasios Tzempelikos, Seungjae Lee
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adhered roofs, building energy modeling, cool roofs, energy cost savings, insulation, mechanically attached roofs, thermal performance
While it is well-known that cool roofs can efficiently reduce cooling demand in buildings, their overall energy performance in mixed and cold climates has been a topic of debate. This paper presents a comprehensive simulation study to evaluate the combined impact of roof reflectivity, insulation level, and construction type (adhered vs attached) on annual energy demand and energy costs in the United States, for different buildings and climate zones. EnergyPlus was used to model three building types (retail, office, and school buildings) for the 16 most climate-representative locations in the US using typical reflectivity and insulation values. The results show that (i) roof reflectivity is equally important to roof insulation in warm climates; (ii) for low-rise offices and schools, the benefits of reflective roofs vs dark-colored roofs are clear for all US climatic zones, with higher savings in warm climates; (iii) for big-box-retail buildings, reflective roofs perform better except fo... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery storage, Fuel Cells, high-temperature PEMFC, Hydrogen, more electric aircraft, passive hybridization
Nowadays, many aircraft manufacturers are working on new airplanes to reduce the environmental footprint and therefore meet greenhouse gas reduction targets. The concept of more electric aircraft is one of the solutions to achieve this goal. For this aircraft architecture, several electrical devices are used in order to supply propulsive and non-propulsive functions. This paper focuses on the sizing of a direct hybridization system to supply a non-propulsive function in an aircraft. It is composed of a High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC) and a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. This sizing is based on a static model of each storage device. The accuracy of these models is compared with dynamic models during a simulation for an aeronautical mission. Static models are implemented in a genetic algorithm to achieve two goals: on the one hand, satisfy the mission profile, and on the other hand, minimize the mass of the system. Other criteria, such as battery and fuel ce... [more]

Keywords: biogas, feedstock, olive pomace, olive wastewater, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The disposal of olive wastes and their wastewater is a major problem worldwide. An important recycling chain can be formed through biogas production and energy conversion from olive waste. This study developed an efficient and effective sustainable model for biogas production using anaerobic digestion conditions with the co-digestion of pretreated olive waste. The sample used was hard olive pomace, which was dried in an oven before being crushed to fine particles with a mortar and pestle. The sample was analyzed by a CE-440 Elemental Analyzer, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR) analysis was performed using Shimadzu IRTracer-100. Through the analysis, a substantial amount of electrical energy of 769 kWh/t was found to be generated per ton of olive pomace due to the high volatile solid (VS) percentage of organic waste material incorporated during the calculation. Reduced land area for landfilling olive waste was calculated to be 108 m2 per year, whereas the potential... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: binary and ternary nitrate mixtures, concentrating solar power (CSP), heat transfer fluids, hybridization of CSP plants, molten salt, molten salt heater
Hybridization of CSP plants with alternative energy sources (fuels) represents a means to improve flexibility of operation, power dispatchability and utilization factor of the plant. New generation CSP plants make use of molten salts as Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF) besides Thermal Energy Storage (TES) medium. Therefore, proper interfaces should be developed to effectively transfer the heat from the back-up source to the molten salt. This paper presents the results obtained in the experimental validation of an innovative gas-fueled Molten Salt Heater (MSH) prototype. The objective of this research is to validate the MSH design, where the specific properties of molten salts (compared to other HTFs, e.g., thermal oils) have to be taken into account. The developed reduced-scale MSH (90 kW thermal) consists of a heat exchanger with the molten salt flowing inside finned tubes cross-flowed with the hot flue gas generated in an upstream combustion chamber. March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: actual measurement, passive ventilation, residential house, Simulation, solar air heater, ventilation load
In this paper, the authors examined the technology to maximize the use of renewable energy. Passive ventilation systems are expected to reduce the energy consumption of the fan and the maintenance burden. In addition, the wall-mounted solar air heater can supply thermal energy without using any energy at all. Therefore, this paper presents a “passive ventilation system with a solar air heater” that combines a passive ventilation system with the solar air heater to preheat the air. This system can reduce the ventilation load. To evaluate the solar air heater performance in a real environment, we developed a simulation for calculating the heat collection capacity of the solar air heater, and then the system was implemented in a real building for verification. The simulation performs hourly unsteady calculations, allowing for accurate evaluation of the annual simulation. Based on the measurement results, the effects of heating load reduction and prediction methods are presented. The solar... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat transfer, large eddy simulation, POD, surface roughness, turbulence
As a consequence of rapid development of additive manufacturing (3D printing) methods, the academic/industrial demand has been continuously increasing. One field of application is the manufacturing of heat exchanging devices using this promising method. In this regard, understanding the underlying mechanisms from a thermo-hydraulic viewpoint becomes important. Therefore, in this study, scale-resolving large eddy simulation (LES) is applied to reveal the flow details in combination with a model of roughness topology occurring in additive manufacturing. To process the transient LES results, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is used to extract the coherent flow structures, and the extended POD is used to rank the flow modes based on thermal importance. The main aim of the present work is to go beyond the conventionally applied methodologies used for the evaluation of surface roughness, i.e., averaged numerical study or experimental overall performance evaluation of the flow/thermal re... Optimization-Based Network Identification for Thermal Transient Measurements
Nils J. Ziegeler, Peter W. Nolte, Stefan Schweizer
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compact thermal models, network identification by deconvolution, thermal impedance, thermal structure function, time constant spectrum, transient thermal measurement
Network identification by deconvolution is a proven method for determining the thermal structure function of a given device. The method allows to derive the thermal capacitances as well as the resistances of a one-dimensional thermal path from the thermal step response of the device. However, the results of this method are significantly affected by noise in the measured data, which is unavoidable to a certain extent. In this paper, a post-processing procedure for network identification from thermal transient measurements is presented. This so-called optimization-based network identification provides a much more accurate and robust result compared to approaches using Fourier or Bayesian deconvolution in combination with Foster-to-Cauer transformation. The thermal structure function obtained from network identification by deconvolution is improved by repeatedly solving the inverse problem in a multi-dimensional optimization process. The result is a non-diverging thermal structure functio... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: econometric model, Natural Gas, transmission system operator
The transmission of natural gas is a key element of the Polish energy system. The published data of the Polish distribution system operators and the transmission system operator on the volume of gaseous fuel transmitted indicate a growing trend in the consumption of energy produced from natural gas. In connection with the energy transformation, switching energy generation sources from hard coal to natural gas in Poland, it is important for transmission operators to know the future demand for gaseous fuel. The aim of the article is to attempt to develop an econometric model related to the consumption of gaseous fuel by Polish entrepreneurs. The knowledge therein may be useful for making business decisions related to the possible expansion of the transmission system, and thus investing financial resources for this purpose. This knowledge will also provide quantitative information related to the interest in gaseous fuel among industrial consumers and the analysis of the trend of natural g... [more]
