Inspection Robotic UGV Platform and the Procedure for an Acoustic Signal-Based Fault Detection in Belt Conveyor Idler
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: belt conveyor, damage, idler, inspection robot, rolling element bearing, signal processing, sound
Belt conveyors are commonly used for the transportation of bulk materials. The most characteristic design feature is the fact that thousands of idlers are supporting the moving belt. One of the critical elements of the idler is the rolling element bearing, which requires monitoring and diagnostics to prevent potential failure. Due to the number of idlers to be monitored, the size of the conveyor, and the risk of accident when dealing with rotating elements and moving belts, monitoring of all idlers (i.e., using vibration sensors) is impractical regarding scale and connectivity. Hence, an inspection robot is proposed to capture acoustic signals instead of vibrations commonly used in condition monitoring. Then, signal processing techniques are used for signal pre-processing and analysis to check the condition of the idler. It has been found that even if the damage signature is identifiable in the captured signal, it is hard to automatically detect the fault in some cases due to sound dis... [more]

Modeling Hydraulic Fracturing Using Natural Gas Foam as Fracturing Fluids
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energized fracturing fluids, fractured well productivity, hydraulic fracturing modeling, stress dependent permeability, well lifecycle simulation
Stranded gas emission from the field production because of the limitations in the pipeline infrastructure has become one of the major contributors to the greenhouse effects. How to handle the stranded gas is a troublesome problem under the background of global “net-zero” emission efforts. On the other hand, the cost of water for hydraulic fracturing is high and water is not accessible in some areas. The idea of using stranded gas in replace of the water-based fracturing fluid can reduce the gas emission and the cost. This paper presents some novel numerical studies on the feasibility of using stranded natural gas as fracturing fluids. Differences in the fracture creating, proppant placement, and oil/gas/water flowback are compared between natural gas fracturing fluids and water-based fracturing fluids. A fully integrated equation of state compositional hydraulic fracturing and reservoir simulator is used in this paper. Public datasets for the Permian Basin rock and fluid properties and... [more]

Electrical Load Demand Forecasting Using Feed-Forward Neural Networks
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: error correction, feed-forward neural network, load demand forecast
The higher share of renewable energy sources in the electrical grid and the electrification of significant sectors, such as transport and heating, are imposing a tremendous challenge on the operation of the energy system due to the increase in the complexity, variability and uncertainties associated with these changes. The recent advances of computational technologies and the ever-growing data availability allowed the development of sophisticated and efficient algorithms that can process information at a very fast pace. In this sense, the use of machine learning models has been gaining increased attention from the electricity sector as it can provide accurate forecasts of system behaviour from energy generation to consumption, helping all the stakeholders to optimize their activities. This work develops and proposes a methodology to enhance load demand forecasts using a machine learning model, namely a feed-forward neural network (FFNN), by incorporating an error correction step that i... COVID-19 Pandemic Effect on Energy Consumption in State Universities: Michoacan, Mexico Case Study
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: COVID-19, energy consumption, impact environment, Sustainability, universities
The COVID-19 pandemic has generated multiple impacts. In particular, in the educational sector, the virtual class modality generated changes in the patterns of energy consumption at the institutional level; the identification of this consumption will allow us to reflect on new energy saving and efficient use strategies. In this research, we present a case study of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on electricity consumption in 13 state universities in Michoacán, Mexico. Electric energy consumption has been evaluated before and during the presence of the COVID-19 between 2019 and 2020. The comparative analysis estimated the reduction in energy consumption and its economic and environmental impact. The results show a considerable decrease in electricity consumption, generating an average saving of 76.24 MWh/month, which translates into an annual emission reduction from 2019 to 2020 of approximately 497 TnCO2e, and in economic terms of $8,882.25 USD each month. In general, it was ident... [more]

Symmetrical Cascaded Switched-Capacitor Multilevel Inverter Based on Hybrid Pulse Width Modulation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: cascaded multilevel inverter, PWM modulation, reactive power, switched-capacitor
Multilevel inverters have been widely used in various industrial applications such as renewable energy generation and electric vehicles. An improved circuit of symmetrical cascaded switched-capacitor multilevel inverter is proposed so that the reactive power is absorbed by its power supply instead of capacitors. Then, a special hybrid pulse width modulation strategy combing level-shifted pulse width modulation (LS-PWM) and phase-shifted pulse width modulation (PS-PWM) was developed for the inverter. With this modulation algorithm, the power between cascaded units is automatically balanced, and the voltage of the capacitor in each unit is also automatically balanced to the dc input voltage. In addition, the optimized capacitor voltage ripple makes it possible to use a smaller capacitor to produce a better output voltage waveform. Theoretical analysis, simulation and experimental results show that the equivalent switching frequency of the cascaded multilevel inverter is twice the origina... [more]

Integrated Capacitive Deionization and Humidification-Dehumidification System for Brackish Water Desalination
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: brackish water, capacitive deionization, desalination, humidification-dehumidification, hybrid system
A hybrid capacitive deionization and humidification-dehumidification (CDI−HDH) desalination system is theoretically investigated for the desalination of brackish water. The CDI system works with two basic operations: adsorption and regeneration. During adsorption, water is desalted, and during the regeneration process the ions from electrodes are detached and flow out as wastewater, which is higher in salt concentration. This wastewater still contains water but cannot be treated again via the CDI unit because CDI cannot treat higher-salinity waters. The discarding of wastewater from CDI is not a good option, since every drop of water is precious. Therefore, CDI wastewater is treated using waste heat in a process that is less sensitive to high salt concentrations, such as humidification-dehumidification (HDH) desalination. Therefore, in this study, CDI wastewater was treated using the HDH system. Using the combined system (CDI−HDH), this study theoretically investigated brackish water o... [more]

Process Efficiency and Energy Consumption during the Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of Bioactive Substances from Hawthorn Berries
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: anthocyanins, energy consumption, Energy Conversion, polyphenols, pulsed ultrasound, yield of extraction
This study investigated the impact of sonication parameters on the efficiency of the extraction of bioactive substances from hawthorn berries. The ultrasonic treatment was performed in two modes: continuous and pulse. In the pulse mode, the samples were sonicated with the following processor settings: 1 s on-2 s off. The effective ultrasonic processor times were 5, 10, and 15 min, and the total extraction times were 15 min, 30 min, and 45 min. The content of total polyphenols and total anthocyanins was determined by a spectrophotometric method. We show that the operating mode of the processor affects extraction efficiency, energy consumption and unit energy inputs. Extraction supported by a pulsating ultrasonic field allowed saving from 20% to 51% of energy with a simultaneous higher efficiency of the process. In addition, we show that the unit energy consumption in the pulsed mode was about 40% to 68% lower than the energy consumption in the case of continuous operation.

Energy Poverty and Sustainable Economic Development: An Exploration of Correlations and Interdependencies in European Countries
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: correlation and indexes, energy poverty, sustainable development
The problem of energy poverty exists in practically every European country. Its size and scope are determined by a variety of factors, ranging from economic development to the direction of energy and climate policy implementation to cultural factors. Our aim in this paper was to carry out a comparative analysis of indicators related to energy poverty and sustainable development to identify correlations and links between the two issues and determine how they are related. The fact that the analysis was performed for most European countries is new and represents a broad spectrum of research; we were not limited to studies of countries bound by formal political-economic arrangements or by consideration of the degree of economic development. This approach enabled explication of how diverse the situation is in Europe. The research methods used included a critical analysis of the literature and the use of descriptive and mathematical-statistical tools. The main conclusions and findings of the... [more]

Dependence of the Equivalent Circulation Density of Formate Drilling Fluids on the Molecular Mass of the Polymer Reagent
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: drilling fluid, equivalent circulation density, formate fluid, polymer reagent, preservation of formation permeability, weighted mud
Construction of offshore gas wells is characterized by increased requirements for both the technological process in general and the technological parameters of drilling fluids in particular. Parameters and properties of the used drilling muds must meet a large number of requirements. The main one is the preservation of the permeability of the reservoirs, in addition to the environmental and technological concerns. At the same time, pressures in the productive formation at offshore fields are often high; the anomaly coefficient is 1.2 and higher. The use of barite in such conditions can lead to contamination of the formation and a decrease in future well flow rates. In this regard, the development and study of the compositions for weighted drilling muds is necessary and relevant. The paper presents investigations on the development of such a composition based on salts of formic acid (formates) and evaluates the effect of the molecular weight of the polymer reagent (partially hydrolyzed... Experimental Study on the Impingement Characteristics of Self-Excited Oscillation Supercritical CO2 Jets Produced by Organ-Pipe Nozzles
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: jet-assisted drilling, organ-pipe nozzle, rock erosion, self-excited oscillation, supercritical carbon dioxide jet, unconventional energy resources
Supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) jets are a promising method to assist drilling, enhance oil−gas production, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To further improve the drilling efficiency of SCO2 jet-assisted drilling, organ-pipe nozzles were applied to generate a self-excited oscillation SCO2 jet (SEOSJ). The impact pressure oscillation and rock erosion capability of SEOSJs under both supercritical and gaseous CO2 (GCO2) ambient conditions were experimentally investigated. It was found that the impact pressure oscillation characteristics of SEOSJs produced by organ-pipe nozzles are dramatically affected by the oscillation chamber length. The optimum range of the dimensionless chamber length to generate the highest impact pressure peak and the strongest pressure oscillation is within 7−9. The dimensionless pressure peak and the pressure ratio decreases gradually with increasing pressure difference, whereas the pressure oscillation intensity increases with increasing pressure differ... Why Low-Carbon Publicity Effect Limits? The Role of Heterogeneous Intention in Reducing Household Energy Consumption
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: household energy behavior, rapid urbanization areas, structural equation model
Low-carbon knowledge is seen as having a key role in interfering with household energy consumption behaviors by wide consensus from political and academic areas. Whether low-carbon publicity will help to reduce household energy consumption is still in dispute. By constructing an integrated knowledge-intention-behavior model and using 1335 detailed survey questionnaires of household energy behavior in Henan Province, the central area in China, this paper finds that in the developing area low-carbon knowledge or publicity cannot positively impact household energy-saving behavior even if mediated by energy awareness and energy-saving attitudes. Low-carbon knowledge does improve energy-saving attitude and attitude does not decrease household energy consumption directly. Familiarity with particular energy-saving knowledge would decrease the household energy consumption but not significantly in the statistics. Path analysis unfolds the reason that the heterogeneous effects of purchase-based... [more]

Design and Operation of a Polygeneration System in Spanish Climate Buildings under an Exergetic Perspective
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: AHU exergy analysis, exergy in office buildings, exergy polygeneration indicators
This work defines and analyzes the performance of a polygeneration system in five different locations in Spain to maintain the thermal comfort and air quality of an office building. The facility is based on a chiller and a CHP engine with PV panels that provide almost all the electricity demand of the chiller. According to the energy performance analysis results, the installation working in Bilbao is a full polygeneration system since no electricity needs to be imported from the grid in summer. To quantify the energy savings related to a separated production facility, polygeneration indicators (percentage of savings PES/PExS and equivalent electric efficiency EEE/EExE) have been calculated in energy and exergy terms. The main motivation for using exergy is based on the ambiguity that can arise from the point of view of the First Law. As expected, the exergetic indicators have lower values than the energetic ones. In addition, an in-depth analysis was conducted for the air-handling unit... [more]

Verification and Validation of Large Eddy Simulation for Tip Clearance Vortex Cavitating Flow in a Waterjet Pump
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cavitation, entropy production, large eddy simulation (LES), verification and validation (V&V), vorticity transport equation, waterjet pump
In this paper, large eddy simulation (LES) was adopted to simulate the cavitating flow in a waterjet pump with emphasis on the tip clearance flow. The numerical results agree well with the experimental observations, which indicates that the LES method can make good predictions of the unsteady cavitating flows around a rotor blade. The LES verification and validation (LES V&V) analysis was used to reveal the influence of cavitation on the flow structures. It can be found that the LES errors in cavitating region are larger than those in the non-cavitating area, which is mainly caused by more complicated cavitating and tip clearance flow structures. Further analysis of the interaction between the cavitating and vortex flow by the relative vorticity transport equation shows that the stretching, dilatation and baroclinic torque terms have major effects on the generation and transport of vortex structure. Meanwhile the Coriolis force term and viscosity term also exacerbate the vorticity tran... [more]

Nitrogen-Doped and Carbon-Coated Activated Carbon as a Conductivity Additive-Free Electrode for Supercapacitors
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: activated carbon, carbon coating, conductive additive-free, nitrogen-doped, supercapacitors
The development of supercapacitors with high volumetric capacitance and high-rate performance has been an important research topic. Activated carbon (AC), which is a widely used material for supercapacitor electrodes, has different surface structures, porosities, and electrochemical properties. However, the low conductivity of the electrode material is a major problem for the efficient use of AC in supercapacitors. To tackle this challenge, we prepared conductive, additive-free electrodes for supercapacitors by a simple one-pot treatment of AC with melamine (nitrogen source), pitch, and sucrose (both carbon source). Nitrogen-doped and carbon-coated AC was successfully generated after high-temperature heat treatment. The AC was doped with approximately 0.5 at.% nitrogen, and coated with carbon leading to a decreased oxygen content. Thin carbon layers (~10 nm) were coated onto the outer surface of the AC, as shown in TEM images. The modification of the AC surface with a sucrose source is... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: anisotropy of roughness, Barton ten standard profiles, correlation, joint roughness coefficients, novel discontinuity roughness parameter
Joint roughness determination is a fundamental issue in many areas of rock engineering, because joint roughness has significant influences on mechanical properties and deformation behavior of rock masses. Available models suggested in the literature neglected combined effects of shear direction, scale of rock discontinuities, inclination angle, and amplitude of asperities during the roughness calculations. The main goals of this paper are to establish a comprehensive parameter that considers the characteristics of the size effect, anisotropy, and point spacing effect of the discontinuity roughness, and to investigate the correlation between the proposed comprehensive parameter and joint roughness coefficients. In this work, the Barton ten standard profiles are digitally represented, then the morphological characteristics of the discontinuity profiles are extracted. Performance of Passive and Active Balancing Systems of Lithium Batteries in Onerous Mine Environment
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: active balancing system, battery management system, lithium-iron-phosphorous cell, mine application
To use lithium-iron-phosphate battery packs in the supply systems of any electric mining equipment and/or machines, the required conditions of work safety must be met. This applies in particular to coal mines endangered by fire and/or explosion. To meet the spark-safety conditions, the cells (together with the battery management system—BMS) must be isolated from the influence of the environment, and therefore placed in special fire-tight housings. This significantly degrades the heat dissipation, thus affecting the operating conditions of the cell-packs. Therefore, their usage without the so-called BMS is not recommended, as shown in the authors’ preliminary research. In practice, various BMS are used, most often with the so-called passive balancing. However, their application in mines is uncertain, due to the effect of heating under operation. When it comes to active BMS, they usually possess a quite complex structure and hence, are relatively expensive. Therefore, the authors conduct... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: convective heat transfer, microchannel, solar receiver, thermal performance
In the present article, the heat transfer and fluid flow of the air in a compact microchannel gas heater (MCGH) was experimentally quantified. To understand the effect of heat flux value (HFV), and inlet velocity on the heat transfer coefficient (HTC), wall temperature, friction factor, Nusselt number, average pressure-drop value (PDV) and performance index (PI), a microchannel gas heater was constructed and tested with pressurized air. The results showed that the HTC was 20 W/(sqmK) to 70 W/(sqmK), corresponding to inlet velocities 6.7 m/s and 16.7 m/s, respectively within HFV < 1 kW/m2. Also, the highest PI was 1.19 meaning that the HT rate can be increased by 19% at u = 15 m/s in comparison with the reference case (at u = 13.3 m/s). Likewise, the HTC was intensified once the inlet velocity is increased. It was also identified that increasing the HFV has a strong effect on wall temperature, however, slightly changes the HTC. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2 EOR, CO2 storage, injection optimization, Machine Learning, proxy modelling, reservoir management, waterflooding
Optimal injector selection is a key oilfield development endeavor that can be computationally costly. Methods proposed in the literature to reduce the number of function evaluations are often designed for pattern level analysis and do not scale easily to full field analysis. These methods are rarely applied to both water and miscible gas floods with carbon storage objectives; reservoir management decision making under geological uncertainty is also relatively underexplored. In this work, several innovations are proposed to efficiently determine the optimal injector location under geological uncertainty. A geomodel ensemble is prepared in order to capture the range of geological uncertainty. In these models, the reservoir is divided into multiple well regions that are delineated through spatial clustering. Streamline simulation results are used to train a meta-learner proxy.
