Application of the Horizontal Soil Stratification and Lateral Profiling Methods for 3D Mapping of the Soil Electrical Resistivity
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: 3D mapping, lateral profiling, optimization process, soil stratification, Sunde’s algorithm, Wenner’s method
This work presents a methodology for horizontal soil stratification and a device for 3D soil mapping using the discretization of the Wenner’s method. The methodology starts from the application of the lateral profiling method in conjunction with the Wenner’s method to find the experimental resistivity curve. The Sunde’s algorithm is used to construct the theoretical resistivity curve. By utilizing these experimental and theoretical resistivity curves, it is possible to apply the optimization process to find the parameters: electrical conductivity and thickness of each soil layer. The area under study is discretized and the results related to all subareas are unified using interpolation process. The whole process which results in 3D soil mapping may be automatically produced using the proposed device.

Evolutionary Game Analysis of Co-Opetition Strategy in Energy Big Data Ecosystem under Government Intervention
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: co-opetition strategy, energy big data ecosystem, evolutionary game, government supervision, modified Shapley value
This study discusses how to facilitate the barrier-free circulation of energy big data among multiple entities and how to balance the energy big data ecosystem under government supervision using dynamic game theory. First, we define the related concepts and summarize the recent studies and developments of energy big data. Second, evolutionary game theory is applied to examine the interaction mechanism of complex behaviors between power grid enterprises and third-party enterprises in the energy big data ecosystem, with and without the supervision of government. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is conducted on the main factors affecting co-opetition, such as the initial participation willingness, distribution of benefits, free-riding behavior, government funding, and punitive liquidated damages. The results show that both government supervision measures and the participants’ own will have an impact on the stable evolution of the energy big data ecosystem in the dynamic evolution process,... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: business case analysis, energy hubs, energy modelling, energy planning, hydrogen conversion, renewable energy systems, system integration
Recently, smart energy hubs with hydrogen conversion and storage have received increased attention in the Netherlands. The hydrogen is to be used for vehicle filling stations, industrial processes and heating. The scientific problem addressed in this paper is the proper sizing of capacities for renewable energy generation, hydrogen conversion and storage in relation to a feasible business case for the energy hub while achieving security of supply. Scenario analysis is often used during the early stages of the energy planning process, and for this an easy-to-use analysis model is required. This paper investigates available modelling approaches and develops an algorithmic modelling method which is worked out in Microsoft Excel and offers ease of use for scenario analysis purposes. The model is applied to case study, which leads to important insights such as the expected price of hydrogen and the proper sizing of electrolyser and hydrogen storage for that case. The model is made available... [more]

Ultimate Limit State Scour Risk Assessment of a Pentapod Suction Bucket Support Structure for Offshore Wind Turbine
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: offshore wind turbine, pentapod suction bucket, scour, scour risk, scouring fragility, suction bucket
Scour risk assessment considering reaction force at foundation was proposed and applied to newly developed pentapod suction bucket support structures for a 5.5 MW offshore wind turbine under ultimate limit state environmental load. Scour hazard was obtained according to scour depth by using an empirical formula, which is the function of marine environmental conditions such as significant wave height, significant period, and current velocity. Fragility of the pentapod support structure was evaluated using the bearing capacity limit state criterion under ultimate limit state load case. Scour risk was assessed by combining the scour hazard and the fragility. Finally, scour risk of the developed pentapod suction bucket support structure under ultimate limit state has been assessed.

Battery State of Charge Estimation Based on Composite Multiscale Wavelet Transform
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: multiscale, neural network, state of charge estimation, wavelet transform
The traditional battery state of charge (SOC) estimation method, which is based on neural networks, directly uses terminal voltage and terminal current as the input data. Although it is convenient to implement, it produces a large estimation error when the current and voltage change drastically. To solve this problem, a new method, which uses a composite multiscale wavelet transform, is proposed to estimate the battery SOC. In the proposed method, a wavelet transform is applied to the input data, and this process obtains the approximate coefficients and detail coefficients of the input data at different scales. A neural network then uses these coefficients as inputs to estimate the SOC. The experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the accuracy of the battery SOC estimation without changing the neural network structure or algorithm.

Investigations into the Combined Effect of Mahua Biodiesel Blends and Biogas in a Dual Fuel Engine
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, biogas flow rate, dual fuel, mahua, methane fraction, NOx reduction
Rapid depletion of conventional fuel sources has led to the use of alternative fuels and implementation of variant engine technologies to reduce deleterious emissions being released and deliver thermal energy for numerous applications. This research aims to study the usage of mahua methyl ester in a single-cylinder 4-stroke CI engine, optimized to operate in the dual fuel mode. Performance, combustion and emission characteristics are recorded and compared with diesel with the sole aim of finding the blend that provides adequate performance and diminishing emissions. To this effect, the percentage of mahua biodiesel blend, load, biogas flow rate and methane fraction are varied. The experimentation is conducted using three mahua biodiesel blend variants namely B10, B20 and B30. Gaseous fuel comprising biogas (CH4 and CO2 in ratio of 3:2) and methane (CH4) are incorporated in the dual fuel condition at 8 litre per minute (lpm) and 12 lpm. B20 blend demonstrated better performance and emis... [more]

Resorption Thermal Transformer Generator Design
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: heat, heat-recovery, Modelling, resorption, reversible heterogeneous reactions, sorption, system design, thermodynamics, transformers
This work takes an empirical and evidence-based approach in the development of a resorption thermal transformer. It presents the initial modelling conducted to understand key performance parameters (coefficient of performance and specific mean power) before discussing a preliminary design. Experimental results from large temperature jump and isosteric heating tests have identified the importance of heat transfer in ammonia-salt systems. Both the heat transfer resistance between the salt composite adsorbent and the tube side wall, and the heat transfer from the heat transfer fluid to the tube side wall are key to realising resorption systems. The successful performance of a laboratory-scale prototype will depend on the reduction in these heat transfer resistances, and improvements may be key in future prototype machines. A sorption reactor is sized and presented, which can be scaled for length depending on the desired power output. The reactor design presented was derived using data on... [more]

Optimal Power Systems Restoration Based on Energy Quality and Stability Criteria
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: contingency analysis, optimal power flows, power system planning, power system restoration, power system stability
Electric power systems (EPS) are exposed to disconnections of their elements, such as transmission lines and generation units, due to meteorological factors or electrical failures. Thus, this research proposes a smart methodology for the re-entry of elements that have been disconnected from the EPS due to unforeseen events. This methodology is based on optimal AC power flows (OPF-AC) which allow verifying the state of variables such as voltage, angular deviation, and power (these variables are monitored in normal and fault conditions). The proposed study considers contingencies N-2, N-3, N-4, and N-5, for which the disconnection of transmission lines and generation units are carried out randomly. The analysis of the EPS after the disconnections of the elements is carried out by means of the contingency index, with which the impact that the disconnections of the elements have on the EPS is verified. In this way, the optimal route is generated to restore the elements that went out of ope... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: afterburn, air/steam distributor, catalyst regeneration, FCCU, maldistribution, regenerator
Fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) is the workhorse of modern crude oil refinery. Its regenerator plays a critical role in optimizing the overall profitability by efficiently restoring the catalyst activity and enhancing the heat balance in the riser reactor. Improvement in the device metallurgy and process operations have enabled industrial regenerators to operate at high temperatures with a better coke burning rate and longer operating cycle. Today, the carbon content of regenerated catalyst has drastically reduced to less than 0.1 wt.%. However, the unit is still plagued with operational complexities and insufficient understanding of the underlying dynamic, multiscale intricacies. Recent process-intensification strategies provide insights into regenerator performance improvement potentials. In this review, the importance of the uniform distribution of spent catalysts through structural modification and operational manipulations of the catalyst distributor is discussed. Study of the Fire Behavior of Multilayer Cables in a Mine Tunnel
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: heat release rate, mine, multilayer cable fire, numerical simulation, tunnel fire
Fires caused by cables occur frequently in mines, which endanger the safety of workers. To explore the characteristics of a multilayer cable fire in a mine tunnel, multilayer cable fire simulations were carried out using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). The influence of cable tray spacing, ignition position, and tunnel ventilation speed on the characteristics of the fire were studied. The results showed that these factors change the amount of contact between the cable and air, the heat accumulation, and the heat transfer by the flame interaction between the cables. It was also noted that increasing the spacing or wind speed both made the peak of heat release rate (PHRR) initially increase and then decrease. The influence of wind speed on the cable burnout rate in the upstream and downstream sides of the fire source was not consistent, and the wind speed had a sensitive effect on the cable burn out rate in the upstream side of the fire source. The higher the ignition position was, the... [more]

Transmission System Electromechanical Stability Analysis with High Penetration of Renewable Generation and Battery Energy Storage System Application
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electromechanical stability, energy storage system, grid codes, power systems analysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Despite the benefits of wind and solar photovoltaic generation, its stochastic characteristic imposes uncertainties on the electric power system’s transient stability. The dynamics considering large synchronous generators has been studied for many decades, and its behavior is well known. On the other hand, the penetration of renewable sources has reached records, showing that it is still vital to study their impact. The present work proposes computer modeling and simulations for the dynamic analysis of electromechanical stability in a transmission system with significant renewable generation. In general, the literature does not propose solutions to the electromechanical stability analysis, proving that there are gaps to be filled. Therefore, the main work contribution consists of designing and coupling a battery energy storage system to a solar plant to smooth power variations. March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fast pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO), gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOF/MS), liquid-liquid extraction, multi-step separation
We can prevent climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by fossil fuel usage through introducing alternative fuels such as bio-oil. The fast pyrolysis process used for wood materials has recently gained substantial attention as an approach to produce bio-oil worldwide and in Korea as well. Bio-oil from fast pyrolysis contains highly oxygenated compounds and phenolics, thereby requiring upgrading processes, such as deoxygenation and condensation, for high-end use. To determine an efficient upgrading method for fast pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO), one needs to elucidate its composition and classify it into chemical groups. We analyzed the composition of fractionized FPBO toward high-end use. FPBO was separated into two layers by adding distilled water: (a) the water-soluble phase, and (b) the oil phase, whereas liquid-liquid extraction and multi-step separation were applied for fractionization, respectively. The fractions were obtained, and their chemical groups were an... [more]

Performance Evaluation of 5G Waveforms for Joint Radar Communication over 77 GHz and 24 GHz ISM Bands
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: 24 GHz, 5G, 77 GHz, OFDM RadCom, spectral efficiency, UFMC RadCom
The V2X environment poses many challenges to emerging wireless communication systems, while it is crucial to ensure the efficiency and safety of road users. Requiring continual localization of the surroundings and accurate obstacle detection while providing high reliability in dense networks and low latency in high-mobility environment communication systems imposes a challenge to the driver-assistance field given that we are overly limited in terms of frequency bands and resources. Hence, pooling of the available frequency resources between different applications can help increase the spectral efficiency. A new collaborative approach multiplexed in the time domain, namely RadCom, which can be described as a joint radar and communication system that performs both vehicle-to-everything communication and detection of the neighboring obstacles in the vehicular environment, has been proposed to overcome the limitations of the existing conventional radar system. Time Evolution of Partial Discharges in a Dielectric Subjected to the DC Periodic Voltage
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: DC, direct current periodic (DCP), HVDC, partial discharge (PD), partial discharge measurements
Partial discharge (PD) detection can be considered one of the most useful tools for assessing the insulation conditions of the power apparatus in high-voltage systems. Under AC conditions, this analysis is widely employed in online and offline tests, such as type tests or commissioning, and can be carried out by applying the phase-resolved PD (PRPD) method, since the patterns can give information about the defect classification. Under DC voltages, the classic pattern recognition method cannot be performed, and the measurements show complexities related to the nature of the phenomena. For this reason, to date, a standard for PD measurements under DC does not exist. In previous papers, a new method for PD detection under DC stress voltages has been proposed by the authors. It is based on the application of a direct current periodic (DCP) waveform useful in obtaining PRPD patterns. The dependence of partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) and PD repetition rate (PDRR) on the δ shape pa... [more]

Simplified A-Diakoptics for Accelerating QSTS Simulations
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: power distribution, power system analysis computing, power system simulation, smart grids, time series analysis
The spread of distributed energy resources (DERs) across the distribution power system demands complex planning studies based on quasi-static-time-series (QSTS) simulations, requiring a significant amount of computing time to complete, leading planners to look for alternatives to QSTS. Diakoptics based on actors (A-Diakoptics) is a technique for accelerating simulations combining two computing techniques from different engineering fields: diakoptics and the actor model. Diakoptics is a mathematical method for tearing networks, reducing their complexity by using smaller subcircuits that can be solved independently. The actor model is used to coordinate the interaction between these subcircuits and their control actions, given the pervasive inconsistency that can be found when dealing with large-scale models. A-Diakoptics is a technique that simplifies the power flow problem for improving the simulation time performance, leading to faster QSTS simulations. This paper presents a simplifie... [more]

Pore-Scale Flow Fields of the Viscosity-Lost Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide Solution Caused by Sulfide Ion
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: elasticity loss, Micro-PIV, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, sulfide ion, viscosity loss
The rheology of a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) solution plays an important role in its oil recovery during polymer flooding. However, multiple factors in brine, such as sulfide ions, cause a dramatic loss in the viscosity and oil recovery. To better understand the sulfide-induced viscosity loss and the consequent flow mechanisms in pore networks, the morphology of polymer solutions with and without sulfide ion was observed by scanning electron microscopy; and the variations of the pore scale flow fields were demonstrated by a microscopic visualization seepage experiment combined with Micro-PIV (Microscale Particle Image Velocimetry). The results showed that, with the presence of sulfide ion, the microstructure of the polymer changed from a uniform three-dimensional network structure to loose and uneven floccules, which resulted in viscosity loss (over 70% with 5-mg/L sulfide ion). Moreover, higher concentrations of sulfide ions (5 mg/L and 10 mg/L) resulted in earlier she... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: boil-off, cryogenic, fuel cell, Hydrogen, low-carbon shipping, reliquefaction, sloshing
This study presents an approach for estimating fuel boil-off behaviour in cryogenic energy carrier ships, such as future liquid hydrogen (LH2) carriers. By relying on thermodynamic modelling and empirical formulas for ship motion and propulsion, the approach can be used to investigate boil-off as a function of tank properties, weather conditions, and operating velocities during a laden voyage. The model is first calibrated against data from a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier and is consequently used to investigate various design configurations of an LH2 ship. Results indicate that an LH2 ship with the same tank volume and glass wool insulation thickness as a conventional LNG carrier stores 40% of the fuel energy and is characterised by a boil-off rate nine times higher and twice as sensitive to sloshing. Adding a reliquefaction unit can reduce the LH2 fuel depletion rate by at least 38.7% but can increase its variability regarding velocity and weather conditions. In calm weather, LH... [more]

Mechanism of Coking Pressure Generation in the Light of the Results of Laboratory Tests
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Coal, coal swelling, coking, coking pressure, plastic layer
The phenomenon of coking pressure is crucial for cokemaking both in respect of a safe coke oven battery operation and a proper quality of the produced coke. In spite of that, the mechanism of this phenomenon has not been clearly explained yet. The aim of the presented research was to clarify which of the phenomena most commonly mentioned in the literature on the subject, i.e., the reduced gas permeability of the plastic layer or the swelling of plasticized coal grains, is responsible for generating internal coking pressure. To that end, laboratory equipment was developed which enabled examining the pressure generated by the bed of plasticized coal grains under conditions of a varying possibility of its expansion. The results of the examinations suggest that the swelling phenomenon of plasticized coal grains is the direct cause of coking pressure, and the coking pressure strongly depends on the possibility of plastic layer expansion. The results confirm also the migration phenomenon of... [more]

Characterization of Two-Phase Flow from Pore-Scale Imaging Using Fractal Geometry under Water-Wet and Mixed-Wet Conditions
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fluid distribution, fractal geometric parameters, pore scale imaging, two phase flow, wettability
High resolution micro-computed tomography images for multiphase flow provide us an effective tool to understand the mechanism of fluid flow in porous media, which is not only fundamental to the understanding of macroscopic measurements but also for providing benchmark datasets to validate pore-scale modeling. In this study, we start from two datasets of pore scale imaging of two-phase flow obtained experimentally under in situ imaging conditions at different water fractional flows under water-wet and mixed-wet conditions. Then, fractal dimension, lacunarity and succolarity are used to quantify the complexity, clustering and flow capacity of water and oil phases. The results show that with the wettability of rock surface altered from water-wet to mixed-wet, the fractal dimension for the water phase increases while for the oil phase, it decreases obviously at low water saturation. Lacunarity largely depends on the degree of wettability alteration. The more uniform wetting surfaces are di... [more]

Modulated Predictive Control to Improve the Steady-State Performance of NSI-Based Electrification Systems
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: field-programmable gate array, indirect field-oriented control, modulated model predictive control, multi-drive systems, nine-switch inverter
This paper presents a modulated model predictive control (M2PC) strategy for a nine-switch inverter (NSI) based electrification system to improve the steady-state performance. The model predictive control method has gained significant interest due to its straightforward structure. However, the traditional finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) imposes a high computational burden that is problematic in practical applications. This prevents reaching the high sampling frequencies due to an excessive increase in algorithm run-time. Selecting a low sampling frequency causes an unpleasant distortion in the control variable or poor power quality. An M2PC method for the NSI is proposed in this work to remove this trade-off. One zero vector and two active vectors are selected by evaluating a cost function for each allowed switching state of the NSI. The duty cycles of these vectors are calculated by assessing the cost function employing current error terms. An optimized sequence... [more]
