March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamics, numerical simulations, rail infrastructure, rail vehicle, testing, threshold effect
The paper undertakes analysis of the dynamic impact of a rail vehicle on various types of a railway infrastructure with particular focus on the phenomenon of threshold effect within the transition zones of an engineering facility. The problem of locally variable stiffness of the railway infrastructure, which in turn could lead to the accelerated infrastructure degradation, is identified. Using the analytical and numerical background, the computational model is presented, based on which, it could be possible to determine the impact of the various rail support on the dynamic response of the entire infrastructure. The dynamic load, caused by the passage of the multiaxle rail vehicle, is taken into account in the paper. The fourth-order differential equation is solved by using the finite differences method with application of the numerical MATLAB script. The created numerical algorithm and a number of calculations allowed the formulation of several solutions that could reduce the dynamic i... [more]
A Regressive Model for Periodic Dynamic Instabilities during Condensation of R1234yf and R1234ze Refrigerants

Subject: Environment
Keywords: condensation, impulsive instability, minichannel, regression function
This paper presents the results of experimental research and mathematical modelling in terms of the influence periodic dynamic instabilities have on condensation phase change in R1234yf and R1234ze refrigerants in tubular minichannels. The main reason for this research was the fact that under the Montreal Protocol (1986), as well as Regulation No 517/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 April 2014, the F-gases such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC), sulphur hexafluoride, and other agents containing fluorine have to be withdrawn. This includes one of the most commonly used refrigerants—R134a—which, since 1 January 2017, has already been withdrawn. It also includes the R404A refrigerant. R1234ze and R1234yf are suggested as substitutions for R134a. The basic parameters determining the application of those agents are their global warming potential (GWP) indicator, which is below 150, and reduction in fluorinated greenhouse gases emission by a third, s... Keywords: benchmark, electric naval propulsion, electric propulsion ship, energy management, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation, hybrid-electric propulsion system, hybrid-electric ship, hybrid-electric vehicle, real-time simulation, shipboard power system
International maritime transport organizations are proposing regulatory actions and strategies aimed at decarbonizing the sector to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which currently constitute around 3% of the global total. Hybrid propulsion systems have significant potential in this respect, as a means of power-saving in ships. This paper describes a high-fidelity benchmark for hybrid-electric vessels, combining diesel generators and batteries. The benchmark consists of detailed models, the parameters of which are provided so that the models can be reproduced. The proposed hybrid-electric ship topology and control system was validated using real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations on a Typhoon HIL402 platform. The results provide a detailed analysis of the operation of the different components under varying conditions, which should be useful in prototyping these kinds of systems. In addition, the response of the system was evaluated with regard to potential disturbanc... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy harvesting, evanescent waves reconstruction, IoT, retrodirective array, RF–RF efficiency, scatterers, WPT
In this paper, we investigate the enhancement of RF−RF energy harvesting efficiency (erf−rf) in multipath environments in the context of wireless power transfer (WPT). For this, we used a retrodirective transmitting (Tx) antenna array resonating at 2.4 GHz and a receiving (Rx) antenna surrounded by scatterers placed in the Rx near field. The Rx resides in the Tx far field. We showed that in a medium made of a random distribution of scatterers, a time-reversed wave field interacts with the random medium to regenerate not only the propagating waves but also the evanescent waves required to refocus the energy at the receiver location. The system was enclosed inside a 3 m3 cubical reverberating room to create a strong multipath environment. The study was done for homogeneous (free space) and heterogeneous (multipath environment) media. Different WPT scenarios were considered for different applications: 4 × 1, 4 × 2 and 4 × 4 multi input-multi output (MIMO) systems. The simulation results s... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: biochar, Falcataria moluccana, phosphorus, Shorea sp.
Phosphorus (P) is a limiting nutrient mined from non-renewable sources. P is needed to stimulate trees growth in a forest plantation. P-fertilizer addition in the tropical forest field causes P-leaching flux to watershed and induces eutrophication. The high C contained in meranti (Shorea sp.) biochar can avoid the P-leaching process in the soil with a strategic application method. However, the biochar application method is poorly examined. This research aimed to develop a biochar application method to sequestrate P from the environment and examine its effect on the growth of sengon (Falcataria moluccana). Shorea sp. biochar pyrolyzed at 400 °C and 600 °C were added at a dosage of 0 t ha−1, 25 t ha−1, and 50 t ha−1 for six months in the field. The biochar was placed 20 cm under topsoil without soil mixing. This application method significantly increased total P in the soil without any P-fertilizer addition. The results showed that biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C and a dosage of 25 t ha−1 in... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: direct comparison measurement, series comparison method, uncertainty of measurement, unknown electrical resistance
This paper considers the unknown electrical resistance (measurand) as the numerical result of the measurement that was carried out by means of the well-known direct comparison measurement method using an appropriate standard resistor and voltmeter. In the literature, this measurement method is also referred to as a series comparison method. This method of measurement is one of the indirect methods and is suitable for measuring low resistance. This paper presents two approaches for evaluating the unknown electrical resistance and its associated combined standard uncertainty. The entire process of evaluating the combined standard uncertainty that is associated with the measurand and the standard uncertainties that are associated with the analyzed input quantities has been entirely performed in accordance with the applicable international recommendations and guidelines for the uncertainty of measurement. The analyzed approaches for evaluating the combined standard uncertainty are designed... [more]

Keywords: combustion, gasification, management, plastics, pyrolysis, recycling, thermal properties, waste
The civilization development requires improvement of technologies and satisfaction of people’s needs on the one side, but on the other one it is directly connected with the increasing production of waste. In this paper, the authors dealt with the second of these aspects, reviewing the recycling of plastic waste, which can be processed without changing its chemical structure (mechanical recycling), and with changing its chemical structure (chemical recycling, of which thermal recycling). Mechanical recycling involves shredding the waste in order to obtain recyclate or regranulate that meets specific quality requirements. Chemical recycling consists of the degradation of the material into low-molecular compounds, and it can take place in the processes of hydrolysis, glycolysis, methanolysis by means of chemical solvents, and during thermal processes of hydrocracking, gasification, pyrolysis, combustion, enabling the recovery of gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons foundings in application as... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuel cell system, heat and mass transfer, lumped-mass model, membrane humidifier
Maintaining the performance of a fuel cell stack requires appropriate management of water in the membrane electrode. One solution is to apply an external humidifier to the supply gases. However, the operating conditions change continuously, which significantly affects the humidifier performance and supply gas characteristics. A straightforward humidifier module is needed for integration with the fuel cell system model. In this study, a lumped-mass model was used to simulate a hollow-fiber membrane humidifier and investigate the effects of various input conditions on the humidifier performance. The lumped-mass model can account for heat transfer and vapor transport in the membrane bundle without losing simplicity. The humidifier module was divided into three parts: a heat and mass exchanger in the middle and two manifolds at the ends of the exchanger. These components were modeled separately and linked to each other according to the flow characteristics. Simulations were performed to de... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy management, Markov Decision Process (MDP), Optimization
There has been substantial research on Building Energy Management Systems. Most of the work has focused more on the management scheme and less on the specific structure or the nature of activities within each building. However, recently some attention is being paid to these specifics, and this paper is one of such efforts, where we consider the structure and nature of activities in the building for developing an energy management system custom designed for a bank branch where customers may arrive randomly based on a known probability distribution. Specifically, this paper presents a model for generating an optimal control policy to manage the electrical energy of a commercial bank building. A Markov Decision Process (MDP) model is proposed. The MDP model is solved for the calculation of an optimal control policy using stochastic dynamic programming. The advantage of the proposed model is that it can incorporate uncertainty involved in the problem. Another advantage is that the output c... [more]

Keywords: distributed energy resource, low voltage direct current, low voltage ride-through, trigger type superconducting fault current limiter
Owing to the increasing penetration level of distributed energy resources (DER) and direct current (DC) load, the usage of low-voltage direct current (LVDC) systems has expanded to achieve efficient operations. However, because the LVDC system reaches the peak fault current at a faster rate than the alternating current (AC) system, a solution that protects the system components is necessary to maintain system integrity. It is required by the low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) that the DERs maintain their interconnections with the LVDC system and support fault recovery. In this study, a method is proposed to allow the application of the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) to reduce the fault current and enhance the LVRT capability. However, when the DER maintain a connection to support fault recovery, the conventional resistive-type SFCL must withstand the burden of high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) operation during fault state dependence on LVRT. Therefore, this study propo... [more]

Keywords: auxiliary power supply (APS), current source topology, current transformers, high-voltage isolation, multiple outputs, output voltage self-regulation
Power electronic transformers (PETs) have high voltage isolation requirements and a large number of modules, which requires the auxiliary power supply (APS) to achieve high voltage isolation and multiple outputs. This paper proposes a parameter optimization method for the current source APS applied to PETs, enabling the APS to have multiple output voltage self-regulation capabilities. By optimizing the excitation inductance and leakage inductance for the current transformer of the APS, the excitation current plays a regulating role in energy transmission, thus realizing the self-regulation of the output voltages. The proposed method enables the voltage deviation and voltage change of the output modules to be suppressed under the unbalanced loads and large load fluctuations. Moreover, the APS can still operate normally when a short-circuit or an open-circuit fault occurs on the output sides. Therefore, the stability and reliability of the APS are improved, and the design difficulty of t... [more]

Keywords: DC-DC converter, maximum power point tracking, partial shading, photovoltaic, social group algorithm, soft computing
Photovoltaic (PV) systems-based energy generation is relatively easy to install, even at a large scale, because it is scalable in size and is thus easy to transport. Harnessing maximum power is only possible if maximum power tracking (MPPT) functionality is available as part of the power converter control that interfaces the PV panels to the grid. Solar exposure covering all PV panels is unlikely to happen all the time, which is known as a partial shading (PS) phenomenon. As a result, depending on the MPPT algorithm adopted, it may fail to find a maximum global power peak, being locked into a local power peak. This research work discusses an alternative MPPT control technique inspired in the social group optimization (SGO) algorithm. SGO belongs to the meta-heuristic optimization techniques family. In this sense, the SGO method ability for solving global optimization problems is explored to find the global maximum power point (GMPP) under the presence of local MPPs. The introduced SGO−... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: maximum power point, MPPT algorithm, partial shading condition, Solar Photovoltaic
In order to operate a solar photovoltaic (PV) system at its maximum power point (MPP) under numerous weather conditions, it is necessary to achieve uninterrupted optimal power production and to minimize energy losses, energy generation cost, and payback time. Under partial shading conditions (PSC), the formation of multiple peaks in the power voltage characteristic curve of a PV cell puzzles conventional MPP tracking (MPPT) algorithms trying to identify the global MPP (GMPP). Meanwhile, soft-computing MPPT algorithms can identify the GMPP even under PSC. Drawbacks such as structural complexity, computational complexity, huge memory requirements, and difficult implementation all affect the viability of soft-computing algorithms. However, those drawbacks have been successfully overcome with a novel ten check algorithm (TCA). To improve the performance of the TCA in terms of MPPT speed and efficiency, a novel concept of data arrangement is introduced in this paper. The proposed structure... [more]

Keywords: induced seismicity, injection pressure model, injection wells, produced water injection, rock slippage diagram
A considerable increase of seismicity has occurred in the USA in the last decade (2009−2020) with an annual average of 345 M3+ earthquakes. Numerous field cases have shown that excessive well pressure due to a high injection rate may have triggered seismic events. This study defines conditions for inducing a seismic event by excessive injection in the well’s pressure that may cause geomechanical damage to the rock. Introduced here is an analytical model and method for predicting pressure increase during injection of produced water contaminated with oil. The model calculates time-dependent advancement of the captured oil saturation causing the well’s injectivity damage and pressure increase. Critical conditions for a seismic event are set by defining rock failure when well pressure exceeds the fracturing pressure of the wellbore or when the increased pore pressure reduces the effective normal stress at the “weak” interface inside the rock, computed with a geomechanical model. Faults on individual modules within a photovoltaic (PV) array can have a significant detrimental effect on the power efficiency and reliability of the entire PV system. In addition, PV module faults can create risks to personnel safety and fire hazards if they are not detected quickly. As IoT hardware capabilities increase and machine learning frameworks mature, better fault detection performance may be possible using low-cost sensors running machine learning (ML) models that monitor electrical and thermal parameters at an individual module level. In this paper, to evaluate the performance of ML models that are suitable for embedding in low-cost hardware at the module level, eight different PV module faults and their impacts on PV module output are discussed based on a literature review and simulation. The faults are emulated and applied to a real PV system, allowing the collection and labelling of panel-level measurement data. Then, different ML methods are used to classify these faul... [more]

Keywords: dual-clutches control algorithm, mobile construction machines, powertrain, primary torque control
Mobile machines using a hydrostatic transmission is highly efficient under lower working-speed condition but less capable at higher transport velocities. To enhance overall efficiency, we have improved the powertrain design by combining a hydrostatic transmission with a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Compared with other mechanical gearboxes, the DCT avoids the interruption of torque transmission in the process of shifting without sacrificing more transmission efficiency. However, there are some problems of unstable torque transmission during the shifting process, and an excessive torque drop occurring at the end of the gear shift, which result in a poor drive comfort. To enhance the performance of the novel structural possibility of powertrain design, we designed a novel control strategy, which maintains the sliding in the torque phase and reduces the difference before and after the engagement, for the motor torque and the clutch torques during the shifting process, and then validated... Keywords: AC drives, dead-time, delay, motor, noise, programmable low-pass filter
This paper proposes an extended structure of a programmable low-pass filter (PLPF) for direct filtering of three-phase variables in automotive AC drives. The PLPF adjusts its cut-off frequency according to the synchronous frequency of the AC motors. Moreover, it compensates gain attenuation and phase delay of the fundamental component signal. The conventional PLPF can only be applied to variables in the stationary reference frame. In order to obtain filtered three-phase variables, an inverse reference frame transformation is required. However, the extended structure, which includes reference frame transformations, can be directly applied to three-phase variables and remove the noise in the earlier stage before transformation. The extended PLPF is more useful for making signal flows clear and intuitive when organizing an algorithm that directly requires three-phase variables. The extended PLPF requires a moderate computational load corresponding with that of the conventional PLPF becaus... [more]

In this paper, the influence of the number of ground motions on fragility analysis of 5 MW wind turbines under the excitation of aerodynamic and seismic loads is investigated to acquire the sufficient number of records for reasonable fragility estimation. Two scenarios, parked and normal operation, were simulated with the number of actual recorded ground motions ranging from 2 to 48. The fragility function parameters are estimated by utilizing the method of multiple stripe analysis (MSA), and the relationship between the number of ground motions and estimated parameters for each scenario is discussed. In addition, the influence of the number of ground motions on the range of estimated parameters with a 95% confidence interval is also discussed. The simulation results show that there are significant differences between the two scenarios in terms of fragility analysis for 5 MW wind turbines with the interaction of wind and seismic loads, and the lesser number of earthquakes is needed for... Keywords: lattice Boltzmann method, numerical simulation, tidal turbine, turbulence, wake
The lattice Boltzmann method is used to model a horizontal axis tidal turbine. Because tidal turbines generally operate in highly turbulent flows, a synthetic eddy method is implemented to generate realistic turbulent inflow condition. The approach makes use of the open-source code Palabos. Large eddy simulation is employed. A coupling between an immersed boundary method and a wall model is realized to model the turbine. Calculations are performed at two different turbulence rates. The upstream flow condition is first set up to match with experimental results. Numerical simulations of a tidal turbine with realistic turbulent inflow conditions are then realized with the lattice Boltzmann method. The approach is found to be in good agreement with experimental data. Cases with three different inflow turbulence rates are simulated. An almost linear evolution with the turbulence rate is observed for the axial velocity deficit. An analysis of the propagation of tip-vortices in the close wake... [more]
