Use of Participatory Processes in Wood Residue Management from a Circular Bioeconomy Perspective: An Approach Adopted in Italy
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: bioeconomy indicators, bottom-up approach, European Union Green Deal, public participation, stakeholder involvement
The circular bioeconomy is aimed at achieving sustainable development through high efficiency utilization and resource recycling, and through combining environmental, economic and social objectives. Although the implementation of circular bioeconomy principles is based on a bottom-up approach, the participatory process has often been neglected. To overcome this problem, the present study investigated a case-study with a three-step participatory process. The process aimed to evaluate a forest-wood supply chain with consideration of the circular bioeconomy principles. A set of indicators was identified and assessed by a pool of experts. Then the members of a forest-wood supply chain were consulted to implement the identified actions. Finally, a focus group was organized with key stakeholders to discuss critical issues and strategies for enhancing the forest-wood supply chain locally. The results show that the proposed set of indicators is a useful tool to evaluate the performance of the... [more]

Cost Optimized Building Energy Retrofit Measures and Primary Energy Savings under Different Retrofitting Materials, Economic Scenarios, and Energy Supply
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: building material, district heating, energy retrofit, life cycle, retrofit cost
We analyze conventional retrofit building materials, aluminum, rock, and glass wool materials and compared such materials with wood-based materials to understand the lifecycle primary energy implications of moving from non-renewable to wood-based materials. We calculate cost optimum retrofit measures for a multi-apartment building in a lifecycle perspective, and lifecycle primary energy savings of each optimized measure. The retrofit measures consist of the thermal improvement of windows with varied frame materials, as well as extra insulation of attic floor, basement walls, and external walls with varied insulation materials. The most renewable-based heat supply is from a bioenergy-based district heating (DH) system. We use the marginal cost difference method to calculate cost-optimized retrofit measures. The net present value of energy cost savings of each measure with a varied energy performance is calculated and then compared with the calculated retrofit cost to identify the cost o... [more]

Evaluation of an Additional Generator on the Economic Effect Based on a Load Sharing Optimization of Medium-Speed/High-Speed Diesel Generators in a Microgrid
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: high-speed DG, load sharing, medium-speed DG, microgrid, mixed-integer programming
This study investigates the additional installation of a high-speed diesel generator to independent microgrids (MG) such as remote islands where relatively efficient medium-speed diesel generators (DGs) are mainly used. While small-sized and lightweight, high-speed DGs are not widely spread for continuous usage because their efficiency is lower than that of the medium-speed DGs. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the new method of load sharing optimization to improve the economy by interconnecting a high-speed DG to an independent MG where the medium-speed DGs are operated. The study investigates the effect of operation cost reduction by installing the new load sharing method of operation following the load sharing pattern derived by the mixed-integer programming. As a result of this study, there was some effect to installing a high-speed DG operated by the conventional method. In addition, by adding the new method of load sharing with optimization, the econo... [more]

Dynamic Performance Enhancement of a Renewable Energy System for Grid Connection and Stand-Alone Operation with Battery Storage
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery storage, computation burden, MPPT, PMSG, predictive control, ripples, standalone operation, wind power
This paper introduces a new formulated control scheme for enhancing the dynamic performance of a wind driven surface permanent magnet synchronous generator. The designed control scheme is based on predictive control theory, in which the shortcomings of previous predictive controllers are avoided. To visualize the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme, the performance of the generator was dynamically evaluated under two different operating regimes: grid connection and standalone operation in which a battery storage system was used to enhance the power delivery to the isolated loads. In addition, a detailed performance comparison between the proposed controller and traditional predictive controllers was carried out. The traditional control topologies used for comparison were the model predictive direct power control, model predictive direct torque control, and model predictive current control. A detailed description of each control scheme is introduced illustrating how it is confi... [more]

Consumer-Driven Demand-Side Management Using K-Mean Clustering and Integer Programming in Standalone Renewable Grid
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: demand response, demand-side management, K-mean clustering, standalone hybrid renewable energy system
Many countries have larger land areas and scattered communities. Therefore, to electrify them, small standalone power systems are the more preferred and cost-efficient solution as compared to utility grid extensions. The main objective of a standalone power system is to supply cleaner, cheaper, and uninterrupted electricity. However, for standalone power systems, demand-side management always remains a challenging task. In this paper, a load scheduling algorithm driven by K-mean clustering and linear integer programming to schedule consumers’ appliances for the upcoming day is proposed. In addition, the basic power to run the necessary appliances is kept available in the system all the time. Furthermore, to assist the consumer in every situation, the battery storage system and the overall system size reduction are also taken into consideration. Consumer input is also used in scheduling the appliances. The proposed method is evaluated on the publicly available real-world dataset; the si... [more]

Wind Turbine Power Maximization Using Log-Power Proportional-Integral Extremum Seeking
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: log-of-power (LP) feedback, proportional-integral extremum seeking control (PIESC), wind turbine power maximization
This paper proposes a Log-Power Proportional-Integral Extremum Seeking Control (LP-PIESC) framework for maximizing the power capture of a wind turbine operating at below-rated wind speeds, i.e., the so-called region-2 of a turbine’s power curve. Extremum seeking control (ESC) has emerged as a viable algorithm to maximize energy capture for a wind turbine operating in region-2. Despite the encouraging results of early ESC strategies, the basic algorithm suffers from slow and inconsistent convergence behavior under changing wind speed within region-2. It has been shown that replacing the power signal with its logarithm results in an algorithm that is robust and predictable even when the mean wind speed varies. In addition, new studies have suggested that replacing conventional ESC with proportional plus integral ESC (PIESC) results in faster convergence to optimal conditions. In the current paper, the idea of log-power feedback is merged with the PIESC scheme and is applied to tune the p... [more]

Analysis of Electricity and Natural Gas Security. A Case Study for Germany, France, Italy and Spain
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electricity, energy security, indicators, Natural Gas
This work aims to present an analysis of electricity and natural gas supply security in the four European Union countries with the highest level of consumption, namely Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. The goal of the study is to use and adapt a set of 22 indicators for estimating the level of energy security. The evaluation of an index called “Energy Security Level”, measuring the overall energy security, is performed for the period 2006−2018 in order to compare its evolution in each of the analyzed countries. The application of the proposed indicator system demonstrates which measures weakened or strengthened energy security in the past. The analysis of the energy security level demonstrates that Germany and France perform better than Italy and Spain in terms of energy security assurance. The main factors for these differences are the rich energy mix for Germany and the massive presence of nuclear power in France. These two elements make German and French energy systems more resilie... [more]

Typical Damage Prediction and Reliability Analysis of Superheater Tubes in Power Station Boilers Based on Multisource Data Analysis
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: creep and fatigue failure fracture, deep learning, reliability, safety assessment, superheater and re-heater, Weibull distribution
The superheater and re-heater piping components in supercritical thermal power units are prone to creep and fatigue failure fracture after extensive use due to the high pressure and temperature environment. Therefore, safety assessment for superheaters and re-heaters in such an environment is critical. However, the actual service operation data is frequently insufficient, resulting in low accuracy of the safety assessment. Based on such problems, in order to address the issues of susceptibility of superheater and re-heater piping components to creep, inaccurate fatigue failure fracture, and creep−fatigue coupling rupture in a safety assessment, their remaining life prediction and reliability, as well as the lack of actual service operation data, multisource heterogeneous data generated from actual service of power plants combined with deep learning technology was used in this paper. As such, three real-time operating conditions’ data (temperature, pressure, and stress amplitude) during... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: DLR, dynamic line rating, line monitoring, neural network, overhead line, performance analysis, power system
This paper aims to demonstrate the performance and reliability analysis of a dynamic line rating (DLR) system at the Bulgarian demonstration site of the FLEXITRANSTORE project. As part of the project, various manufacturers’ different line monitoring DLR sensors and weather stations were installed on a 110 kV double-circuit overhead line (OHL). These devices provided input parameters to the DLR system based on objective measurements. This paper used statistical tools to examine the reliability and accuracy of installed devices, thus making products from different manufacturers comparable. In addition, two independent line monitoring and DLR models have been developed: the black-box and extended white-box models. The performances of the two models were analyzed for the same input parameters and compared to the field measurements. Based on the presented results, the reliability and accuracy of the applied weather stations of different companies were almost the same. This conclusion cannot... [more]

Situation Awareness by Simple Intuitive Traffic Light Signals for Smart Utilisation of Local Demand and Supply Flexibility
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: demand side management, distributed control, energy transition, grid safety, load flexibility, signalling systems, smart grids, supply security, traffic light system
To realise the energy transition, every renewable source shall at least partially contribute to the demand−supply balancing, including customer-owned controllable loads and energy sources. Their commonly small size and spatial occurrence suggests addressing volatility issues locally, using local flexibilities to mitigate their impact. This calls for simple and effective signalling that enables interaction among local stakeholders, including local producers and customers. According interfaces and information formats appear to not yet exist. In this article, we propose a traffic-light-like system that enables the local grid operator to trigger situation-aware customer behaviour, supporting grid stability when needed and, in return, allowing customers to fully exploit temporary grid capacity when no safety or stability issues persist. The applied intuitive deduction method based on existing coordination mechanisms and objectives indicates, without proof, that the proposed granular traffic... [more]

Recent Advances in Biomass Pretreatment Technologies for Biohydrogen Production
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biohydrogen, feedstock, Fermentation, Fossil Fuel, global warming, substrate pretreatment
Hydrogen is an economical source of clean energy that has been utilized by industry for decades. In recent years, demand for hydrogen has risen significantly. Hydrogen sources include water electrolysis, hydrocarbon steam reforming, and fossil fuels, which emit hazardous greenhouse gases and therefore have a negative impact on global warming. The increasing worldwide population has created much pressure on natural fuels, with a growing gap between demand for renewable energy and its insufficient supply. As a result, the environment has suffered from alarming increases in pollution levels. Biohydrogen is a sustainable energy form and a preferable substitute for fossil fuel. Anaerobic fermentation, photo fermentation, microbial and enzymatic photolysis or combinations of such techniques are new approaches for producing biohydrogen. For cost-effective biohydrogen production, the substrate should be cheap and renewable. Substrates including algal biomass, agriculture residue, and wastewate... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: emissions reductions, energy consumption projections, heavy-duty vehicles, natural gas vehicles, socioeconomic criteria
In this study, the use of compressed and liquefied natural gas is evaluated for heavy-duty passengers (HDPV) and freight vehicles (HDFV). The evaluation is conducted considering the socioeconomic and vehicle fleet characteristics of Colombia. The energy consumption, the CO2, and the pollutant emissions of a baseline and four natural gas penetration scenarios are analyzed. The results show that the inclusion of natural gas reduces the energy consumption per capita of the HDPV and HDFV by up to 40% by 2050. Furthermore, PM2.5 emissions per capita are reduced up to 77% for HDPV and 90% for HDFV, while CO emissions per capita decreased by 82%. Additionally, the technological renovation of HDFV emerges as an effective way to reduce pollutant emissions in the medium term. The establishment of strategies to make HDFV cleaner and more efficient is imperative for the long term. Value-Added Pyrolysis of Waste Sourced High Molecular Weight Hydrocarbon Mixtures
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: catalyst placement, high molecular weight hydrocarbon mixtures, thermal and thermo-catalytic pyrolysis, ZSM-5 catalyst
In this study, Fischer-Tropsch paraffin mixture, heavy residue of waste polyethylene pyrolysis, shredded and crashed agricultural polyethylene waste and their combinations were pyrolysed both thermally and catalytically in a two-stage reactor system. During the experimental work, yields and compositions of pyrolysis products were studied as function of feedstock composition and catalyst placement. It was found that the average molecular weight of feedstocks and the presence of ZSM-5 catalyst also have significant effects on the product yields and the compositions. Feedstocks with high concentration of Fischer-Tropsch paraffin and real waste polyethylene resulted in deeper fragmentation in both thermal and thermo-catalytic pyrolysis. Due to the deeper fragmentation, they seemed to be suitable feedstocks for the production of C6−C9 and C10−C14 hydrocarbons. Meanwhile, for production of C15−C21 hydrocarbons, the use of a higher concentration of heavy residue of waste polyethylene pyrolysi... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: absorptance coefficient, concentrated photovoltaics, honeycomb, integration of renewable energy in industry, solid oxide electrolyzer cells, thermolysis
This paper presents a novel system design that considerably improves the entrapment of terrestrial ultraviolet (UV) irradiance in a customized honeycomb structure to produce hydrogen at a standard rate of 7.57 slpm for places with a UV index > 11. Thermolysis of high salinity water is done by employing a solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC), which comprises three customized, novel active optical subsystems to filter, track, and concentrate terrestrial UV solar irradiance by Fresnel lenses. The output of systems is fed to a desalinator, a photovoltaic system to produce electrical energy, and a steam generator with modified surface morphology to generate the required superheated steam for the SOEC. A simulation in COMSOL Multiphysics ver. 5.6 has shown that a customized honeycomb structure, when incorporated on the copper−nickel surface of a steam generator, improves its absorptance coefficient up to 93.43% (48.98%—flat case). Fault Diagnosis Method for MMC-HVDC Based on Bi-GRU Neural Network
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional gated recurrent unit (Bi-GRU), deep learning, fault diagnosis, feature extraction, MMC-HVDC
The Modular Multilevel Converter-High Voltage Direct Current (MMC-HVDC) system is recognized worldwide as a highly efficient strategy for transporting renewable energy across regions. As most of the MMC-HVDC system electronics are weak against overcurrent, protections of the MMC-HVDC system are the major focus of research. Because of the insufficiencies of the conventioned fault diagnosis method of MMC-HVDC system, such as hand-designed fault thresholds and complex data pre-processing, this paper proposes a new method for fault detection and location based on Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (Bi-GRU). The proposed method has obvious advantages of feature extraction on the bi-directional structure, and it simplifies the pre-processing of fault data. The simplified pre-processing avoids the loss of valid information in the data and helps to extract detailed fault characteristics, thus improving the accuracy of the method. Extensive simulation experiments show that the proposed method m... [more]

Wind and Sea Breeze Characteristics for the Offshore Wind Farms in the Central Coastal Area of Taiwan
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: autoregressive model, backdoor sea breeze, corkscrew sea breeze, diurnal variation, pure sea breeze
Renewable energy is crucial for achieving net zero emissions. Taiwan has abundant wind resources and most major wind farms are offshore over the Taiwan Strait due to a lack of space on land. A thorough study that includes time series modeling of wind speed and sea breeze identification and evaluation for Taiwan’s offshore wind farms was conducted. The time series modeling identified two periodic (annual and diurnal) components and an autoregressive model for multiple-year wind speed time series. A new method for sea breeze type identification and magnitude evaluation is proposed. The method (named as EACH) utilizes a vector and an ellipse to represent the wind condition of a day. Verification of the type identification determined by the new method in two cases of different seasons has been conducted by using surface weather charts and wind data measured by lidar. It is a concise, effective, and programmable way to filter a number of dates for type identification and speed change precur... [more]

Digitalize the Twin: A Method for Calibration of Reference Data for Transfer Real-World Test Drives into Simulation
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: automated driving, calibration method, ground truth, reference measurement, Simulation, virtual validation
In the course of the development of automated driving, there has been increasing interest in obtaining ground truth information from sensor recordings and transferring road traffic scenarios to simulations. The quality of the “ground truth” annotation is dictated by its accuracy. This paper presents a method for calibrating the accuracy of ground truth in practical applications in the automotive context. With an exemplary measurement device, we show that the proclaimed accuracy of the device is not always reached. However, test repetitions show deviations, resulting in non-uniform reliability and limited trustworthiness of the reference measurement. A similar result can be observed when reproducing the trajectory in the simulation environment: the exact reproduction of the driven trajectory does not always succeed in the simulation environment shown as an example because deviations occur. This is particularly relevant for making sensor-specific features such as material reflectivities... [more]

Determination of Dielectric Losses in a Power Transformer
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dielectric losses, electric insulation system, electrical permittivity, power transformer, tan(delta)
The article presents a method of determining dielectric losses that occur in insulating materials in a power transformer. These losses depend mainly on the electric field stress, pulsation, dielectric loss coefficient, and electrical permittivity of insulating materials. These losses were determined by integrating an expression describing unit losses. The determined dielectric losses were compared with the total losses of the transformer. It turned out that dielectric losses are a fraction of a percent of the total losses. The influence of the electrical permittivity of the insulating liquid and paper insulation on the value of dielectric losses was investigated. This influence was ambiguous, which is characteristic of stratified systems made of materials with different permittivity. An analysis of the influence of the dielectric loss coefficient tan(delta) on the value of dielectric losses in the transformer was carried out. Keywords: alkyl-alkoxy-phenols, Extraction, lignin, pyrolysis, sulfur compounds
In order to valorize lignin wastes to produce useful aromatic compounds, the thermal degradation pyrolysis of Kraft lignin in the absence of catalysts has been investigated at 350, 450, and 550 °C. The high content of sulfur in the fresh sample led to the formation of S-containing compounds in products whose evolution in the gas phase was monitored through GC-MS analysis. Pyrolytic gas is rich in CH4, CO, CO2, and H2S with the presence of other sulfur compounds in smaller amounts (i.e., CH3SH, CH3-S-CH3, SO2, COS, and CS2). Biochar morphology and elemental composition have been investigated by means of SEM and EDX. The carbon content reaches ~90% after pyrolysis at 550 °C, while the oxygen content showed a decreasing trend with increasing temperature. BESS Primary Frequency Control Strategies for the West Africa Power Pool
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), mixed integer linear programming, primary frequency control, renewable energy sources, SOC restoration
In recent years, power systems have been moving from conventional power plants toward the integration of renewable energy sources (RES). This trend is taking shape in many developing economies, including in the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP). The integration of RES, however, stresses grid security and stability due to the variability and intermittency of the underlying renewable sources. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) have been identified as a possible solution to address the frequency control challenges in the WAPP Interconnected Transmission System (WAPPITS) in order to help to accommodate high levels of RES. This paper analyzes the application and effectiveness of BESS in providing primary frequency control reserves in the WAPPITS. The analyses are based on numerical simulations that were performed using an open-loop model based on historic frequency measurements from the WAPPITS. Research on Module Layout and Module Coverage of an Automobile Exhaust Thermoelectric Power Generation System
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coverage ratio, module layout, temperature uniformity, thermoelectric power generation
Due to the low efficiency of thermoelectric generators (TEGs), many scholars have focused on the structural optimization of TEGs rather than on the optimization of the layout of thermoelectric modules. We aimed to investigate the effect of module layout on the output power of an automotive exhaust thermoelectric power generation system. The module spacing and module coverage ratio were compared under different working conditions based on a numerical simulation. The results show that, under high-temperature conditions, when the module spacing expands from 5 mm to 35 mm, the output power growth rate of modules of different sizes ranges between 8% and 9%. Moreover, under low-temperature conditions, a high coverage ratio of modules will not increase the total output power but, instead, make it decline. In fact, choosing a larger-size module can improve the temperature uniformity, thereby increasing the output power of the automotive thermoelectric power generation system. Hence, the presen... Study of Induction Motor Inter-Turn Fault Part II: Online Model-Based Fault Diagnosis Method
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault diagnosis, fault parameter, inter-turn fault, ITF model, negative sequence
This paper (Part II) is a follow-up paper to our previous work on developing induction motor inter-turn fault (ITF) models (Part I). In this paper, an online ITF diagnosis method of induction motors is proposed by utilizing the negative sequence current as a fault signal based on the fault model of the previous study in part I. The relationships among fault parameters, negative sequence current, and fault copper loss are analyzed with the ITF model. The analyses show that the fault severity index, a function of fault parameters, is directly related to the negative sequence and the copper loss. Therefore, the proposed model-based fault diagnosis method estimates the fault severity index from the negative sequence current and recognizes the ITF. With the estimated fault severity index, the fault copper loss by the ITF, causing thermal degradation, can be calculated. Finally, experiments were performed in various fault conditions to verify the proposed fault diagnosis method.
