Performance Prediction of Induction Motor Due to Rotor Slot Shape Change Using Convolution Neural Network
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, convolution neural network (CNN), deep learning, induction motor
We propose a method to predict performance variables according to the rotor slot shape of a three-phase squirrel cage induction motor using a convolution neural network (CNN) algorithm suitable for utilizing image data. The set of performance variables was labeled according to the images of each training dataset, and this set was generated from the efficiency, power factor, starting torque, and average torque. To verify the accuracy of the trained deep learning model, the analysis and prediction results of the CNN model were compared and verified with nine untrained double cage slot shapes and shapes optimized based on the root mean square error (RMSE). Although a large number of training data are required for high accuracy in the existing image processing deep learning model, the proposed deep learning method can predict the performance variables for various shapes with the same level of accuracy as the finite element analysis results using a small number of training data. Therefore,... [more]

Analytical Model for Phase Synchronization of a Pair of Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical model, Bernoulli’s law, phase synchronization, vertical-axis wind turbine
The phase-synchronized rotation of a pair of closely spaced vertical-axis wind turbines has been found in wind tunnel experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. During phase synchronization, the two wind turbine rotors rotate inversely at the same mean angular velocity. The blades of the two rotors pass through the gap between the turbines almost simultaneously, while the angular velocities oscillate with a small amplitude. A pressure drop in the gap region, explained by Bernoulli’s law, has been proposed to generate the interaction torque required for phase synchronization. In this study, an analytical model of the interaction torques was developed. In our simulations using the model, (i) phase synchronization occurred, (ii) the angular velocities of the rotors oscillated during the phase synchronization, and (iii) the oscillation period became shorter and the amplitude became larger as the interaction became stronger. These observations agree qualitatively with t... [more]

Visualization and Measurement of Swirling Flow of Dry Ice Particles in Cyclone Separator-Sublimator
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, cyclone separator-sublimator, dry ice, swirling flow, visualization
The dry ice sublimation process of carbon dioxide (CO2) is a unique, environmentally friendly technology that can achieve a temperature of −56 °C or lower, which is a triple point of CO2 in CO2 refrigeration systems. In this study, a cyclone separator-evaporator was proposed to separate dry ice particles in an evaporator. As an initial step before introducing the cyclone separator-evaporator into an actual refrigeration system, a prototype cyclone separator-evaporator was constructed to visualize dry ice particles in a separation chamber. A high-speed camera was used to visualize the non-uniform flow of dry ice particles that repeatedly coalescence and collision in a swirl section. Consequently, the dry ice particle size and the circumferential and axial velocities of dry ice were measured. The results show that the equivalent diameter of the most abundant dry ice particles in the cyclone separation chamber is 2.0 mm. As the inner diameter of the separation section decreases, dry ice p... [more]

Parametric Transient Stability Constrained Optimal Power Flow Solved by Polynomial Approximation Based on the Stochastic Collocation Method
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: polynomial approximation, stochastic collocation method, transient stability constrained optimal power flow, uncertain parameters
To better respond to the impact of power system-uncertain parameters on transient stability, a novel model named the parametric transient stability constrained optimal power flow (parametric TSCOPF) is proposed. It seeks the optimal control scheme of transient stability constrained optimal power flow (TSCOPF) expressed by the function of uncertain parameters in power systems. The key difficulty to solve this model lies in that the relationship between the parametric TSCOPF solution and uncertain parameters is implicit, which is hard to derive generally. To this end, this paper approximates the optimal solution of parametric TSCOPF by polynomial expressions of uncertain parameters based on the stochastic collocation method. First, the parametric TSCOPF model includes both uncertain parameters and transient stability constraints, in which the transient stability constraint is constructed as a set of polynomial expressions using the SCM. Then, to derive the relationship between the parame... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: analytical model, harmonics, interior permanent magnet, MMF, Optimization, permeance, rotor sculpting, torque ripple, winding function
A new and efficient analytical optimization methodology for the design of rotor features is developed and used in interior permanent magnet motors (IPM). The analytical methodology is based on an extended winding function theory to include the IPM rotor’s primary and secondary reluctance paths and the non-homogeneous airgap of the rotor sculpt features. Keywords: attack graph, dynamic virtual network infrastructure, hybrid honeypot
Rapid progress of computing and info-communication technologies (ICT) has changed the ecosystem of power production and delivery. Today, an energy network is a complex set of interrelated devices and information systems covering all areas of electric power operations and applying ICT based on open standards, such as IEC 60870, IEC 61850, and IEC 61970. According to IEC 62351, the energy networks are faced with high cybersecurity risks caused by open communications, security requirements rarely considered in the energy facilities, partial and difficult upgrades, and incompatibility of secure tools with industrial solutions. This situation results in new security challenges, e.g., denial of service attacks on the connected controllers, dispatching centers, process control systems, and terminals. IEC 62351 describes possible ways to comprehensive security in the energy networks. Most of them used in traditional networks (e.g., firewalls, intrusion detection systems) can be adapted to the... Numerical Simulation and Experimental Validation of a Kaplan Prototype Turbine Operating on a Cam Curve
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, hydropower, Kaplan turbine, prototype simulation, rotating vortex rope
The role of hydropower has become increasingly essential following the introduction of intermittent renewable energies. Quickly regulating power is needed, and the transient operations of hydropower plants have consequently become more frequent. Large pressure fluctuations occur during transient operations, leading to the premature fatigue and wear of hydraulic turbines. Investigations of the transient flow phenomena developed in small-scale turbine models are useful and accessible but limited. On the other hand, experimental and numerical studies of full-scale large turbines are challenging due to production losses, large scales, high Reynolds numbers, and computational demands. In the present work, the operation of a 10 MW Kaplan prototype turbine was modelled for two operating points on a propeller curve corresponding to the best efficiency point and part-load conditions. First, an analysis of the possible means of reducing the model complexity is presented. The influence of the bou... [more]

Distributed Voltage Optimization Control of BESS in AC Distribution Networks with High PV Penetration
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: battery energy storage system, distributed control, high PV penetration, voltage optimization control
Large-scale integration of PV generators in distribution grids will impair the voltage stability due to the stochastic and fluctuated PV power generation. To tame the volatile PV power generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are deployed as an effective yet expensive power buffering mechanism. In this paper, a dual ascent-based voltage optimization control is proposed to achieve the concurrent regulation of battery State-of-Charge (SoC), nodal voltages, and distribution loss. This control features the limited dependence on the communication network with information interaction between neighboring nodes. Besides, it can achieve the optimal power flow minimizing the distribution loss while maintaining the BESS SoC within a healthy range. The derivation of the control framework is provided, and comparative simulations in the IEEE 37-node distribution system are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

MW-Assisted Regeneration of 13X Zeolites after N2O Adsorption from Concentrated Streams: A Process Intensification
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: electrification of chemical processes, energy saving, microwaves, N2O abatement, Process Intensification, temperature swing adsorption process
N2O has a global warming potential about 300 times higher than CO2, and even if its contribution to the greenhouse effect is underrated, its abatement in industrial production’s tail gas has become imperative. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of the microwave (MW)-assisted regeneration of a 13X zeolite bed for N2O capture from tail gases. Several consecutive adsorption−desorption cycles were performed to verify the microwave heating effect on the zeolite’s adsorption properties. The results of the experimental tests, performed at N2O concentrations of 10, 20 and 40% vol, highlighted that (i) the steps are perfectly repeatable in terms of both adsorbed and desorbed amount of N2O, meaning that the MWs did not damage the zeolite’s structure, (ii) the presence of both H2O and O2 in the feed stream irreversibly reduces the adsorbent capacity due to nitrites and nitrates formation, and (iii) the presence of H2O alone with N2O still reduces the adsorbent capacity of the zeolites,... Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, gas turbines, Hydrogen, non-premixed combustion, retrofitting
The target of net-zero emissions set by the 2015 Paris Agreement has strongly commissioned the energy production sector to promote decarbonization, renewable sources exploitation, and systems efficiency. In this framework, the utilization of hydrogen as a long-term energy carrier has great potential. This paper is concerned with the combustion characterization in a non-premixed gas turbine burner, originally designed for natural gas, when it is fed with NG-H2 blends featuring hydrogen content from 0 to 50% in volume. The final aim is to retrofit a 40 MW gas turbine. Starting from the operational data of the engine, a CFD model of the steady-state combustion process has been developed, with reference to the base load NG conditions, by reducing the fuel mass-flow rate by up to 17% to target the baseline turbine inlet temperature. When the fuel is blended with hydrogen, for a given temperature at turbine inlet, an increase in the peak temperature up to 800 K is obtained, if no countermeas... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: double-fed induction generator, power control, predictive control, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, repetitive control, wind energy systems
This paper shows an increase in the robustness of a DFIG-based wind energy system when a predictive-repetitive controller in the dq reference frame is used for the control of the rotor current. This designing approach proposes a model predictive control with a receding horizon technique that uses the frequency decomposition of the reference signal as a filter. Furthermore, an augmented space-state model from the original plant model is obtained, and its implementation is addressed from the perspective of normal operating conditions of DFIG in wind energy systems. Additionally, this repetitive controller increases the robustness of the predictive control when a mismatch in machine parameters is considered. Experimental results presented in this paper endorse the advantages of this controller.

The authors of this paper propose a Markov-chain-based method for the synthesis of naturalistic, high-sampling-rate driving cycles based on the route segment statistics extracted from low-sampling-rate vehicle-tracking data. In the considered case of a city bus transport system, the route segments correspond to sections between two consecutive bus stations. The route segment statistics include segment lengths and maps of average velocity, station stop time, and station-stopping probability, all given along the day on an hourly basis. In the process of driving cycle synthesis, the transition probability matrix is built up based on the high-sampling-rate driving cycles purposely recorded in a separate reference city. The particular emphasis of the synthesis process is on satisfying the route segment velocity and acceleration boundary conditions, which may be equal to or greater than zero depending on whether a bus stops or passes a station. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: disturbances attenuation, Model Predictive Control, nonlinear observer, observer-based control, permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM)
The high-dynamic permanent magnet (PM) motor servo system with high-bandwidth is the core equipment for industrial production, and the control bandwidth is also an important indexes to evaluate the performance of the servo system. The non-cascaded direct predictive speed control is an appropriate scheme to optimize the dynamic performance of the PM motor servo system. Regarding the above problems, a nonlinear predictive speed control strategy combined with harmonic disturbance observer is proposed. In the proposed strategy, the disturbances of the servo system are separated from the mathematical model according to the nonlinear modeling theory, and the traditional disturbance observer is modified to estimate the harmonics.
