February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boiler, building, cogeneration, emission, Exergy, generator, heating, reduction, residential, thermoelectric
The residential heating sector accounts for a large share of the worldwide annual primary energy consumption. In order to reduce CO2-emissions, it is therefore particularly important to analyse this sector for potential efficiency improvements. In Europe, natural gas boilers are the most widely used heating technology since they are cost-effective and can be installed in any type of building. The energy efficiency of these boilers is already high. However, in their internal process, heat is generated at a high temperature level which is only used for space heating and therefore a high amount of exergy remains unused. This research aims to develop the potential of using the exergy to further improve the efficiency of the systems. A novel combination of methods is applied to analyse the thermodynamic behaviour of gas-fired boilers in detail and over the cycle of a year. The analysis is performed in two steps: In the first step a system is examined in stationary operating points. This is... [more]
Analysis and Calculation of Crosstalk for Twisted Communication Cables in Umbilical Cable
Runze Cai, Shiyou Yang
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chain-parameter matrix, crosstalk, numerical calculation, twisted structure, umbilical cable
An umbilical cable is a compactly integrated cable consisting of electrical power cables, communication (electric signal) cables, and chemical transposition tubes. An umbilical cable is widely used in developing oil and gas resources of deep and ultra-deep water. With the increment of the length and the functional integration of umbilical cables, the crosstalk becomes a crucial issue in the cable design, and needs to be evaluated carefully before the fabrication and installation. Moreover, the twisted structure of communication cable cores has incurred extra difficulties to the crosstalk calculation. Nevertheless, it is not an easy task to model the complex twisted structure in existing models and methods of the crosstalk computation. In this regard, this paper proposes a numerical methodology for the crosstalk calculation considering the multi-conductor twisted structure of the cable cores. In the methodology, the four-wire twisted structure is modelled as a cascade of uniform multico... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Algorithms, combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) system, demand response, two-stage optimal dispatch
This paper proposes a combined cooling, heating and electric power (CCHP) system based on demand side response. In order to improve the economy of the system, a two-stage optimal scheduling scheme is proposed with the goal of minimizing the total operating cost of the system and maximizing user satisfaction. The optimal operation of the system was divided into two optimization problems, including the demand side and the supply side. In the first stage, combined with user satisfaction, from the new point of view that users are prone to excessive behavior due to time-of-use electricity prices, the cooling, heating and power load curves are optimized. In the second stage, an economic dispatch model that includes operating costs in terms of energy, maintenance and environment is established. An improved artificial bee colony (IABC) algorithm is used to solve the optimal energy production scheme based on the demand curves optimized in the first stage. Case studies are conducted to verify th... [more]
An Adaptive Tracking-Extended Kalman Filter for SOC Estimation of Batteries with Model Uncertainty and Sensor Error
Deng Ma, Kai Gao, Yutao Mu, Ziqi Wei, Ronghua Du
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: EKF, model uncertainty, sensor error, SOC
Accurate state of charge (SOC) plays a vital role in battery management systems (BMSs). Among several developed SOC estimation methods, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) has been extensively applied. However, EKF cannot achieve valid estimation when the model accuracy is inadequate, the noise covariance matrix is uncertain, and the sensor has large errors. This paper makes two contributions to overcome these drawbacks: (1) A variable forgetting factor recursive least squares (VFFRLS) is proposed to accomplish parameters identification. This method updates the forgetting factor according to the innovation sequence, which accuracy is superior to the forgetting factor recursive least squares (FFRLS); (2) an adaptive tracking EKF (ATEKF) is proposed to estimate the SOC of the battery. In ATEKF, the error covariance matrix is adaptively corrected according to the innovation sequence and correction factor. The value of the correction factor is related to the actual error. Proposed algorithms... [more]
Hydrochemical Characterization of Groundwaters’ Fluid Flow through the Upper Mesozoic Carbonate Geothermal Reservoirs in the Geneva Basin: An Evolution more than 15,000 Years Long
Luca Guglielmetti, Michael Heidinger, Florian Eichinger, Andrea Moscariello
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbonate reservoirs, deep geothermal resources, fluid geochemistry, geothermal energy, sedimentary basin
Groundwaters circulating in Upper Mesozoic carbonates are of great interest for geothermal heat production and storage applications in the Geneva area. This study aims at providing new insights and proposing new interpretations about the mineral-water reactions and the fluid-flow paths mechanisms across the Geneva Basin (GB). Data from previous studies are combined and improved by new ones collected from cold and hot springs and geothermal exploration wells in 2018 and 2020 in the framework of the GEothermies program and HEATSTORE project. Major ions, trace elements, and the isotopes of Oxygen, Hydrogen, Sulfur, Strontium, and Carbo have been analysed and the results show that the sampled waters have a meteoric origin, the carbonate aquifers act as preferential host rocks for geothermal waters, and partial contribution from the Cenozoic sediments can be observed in some samples. The Jura Mountains and the Saleve Ridge are the main catchment areas and an evolution from a pure Ca-HCO3 fo... [more]

Jan Niklas Buescher, Daria Gottwald, Florian Momm, Alexander Zureck
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: COVID-19, Energy Efficiency, energy markets, energy mix, out-of-sample data
Our goal is to examine the efficiency of different intraday electricity markets and if any of their price prediction models are more accurate than others. This paper includes a comprehensive review of Germany, France, and Norway’s (NOR1) day-ahead and intraday electricity market prices. These markets represent different energy mixes which would allow us to analyze the impact of the energy mix on the efficiencies of these markets. To draw conclusions about extreme market conditions, (i) we reviewed the market data linked to COVID-19. We expected higher volatility in the lockdowns than before and therefore decrease in the efficiency of the prediction models. With our analysis, (ii) we want to draw conclusions as to whether a mix based mainly on renewable energies such as that in Norway implies lower volatilities even in times of crisis. This would answer (iii) whether a market with an energy mix like Norway is more efficient in highly volatile phases. For the analysis, we use data visual... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: multi-objective optimization, multi-physics analysis, permanent magnet synchronous motor
Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are the main source of power in modern machine tools and are required to generate a high torque over a wide speed range in order to improve manufacturing efficiency. This study sets out to optimize the rotor design of a PMSM with a rated power, rated speed, rated torque and maximum speed of 34 kW, 2250 rpm, 144.3 N·m and 11,250 rpm, respectively. A multi-objective optimization algorithm is employed to determine the rotor design parameters which maximize the output torque of the PMSM over three different load conditions (no load, rated load and maximum speed load). ANSYS multi-physics simulations are conducted to examine the electromagnetic, the structural field, temperature/flow field, demagnetization parament analysis and map analysis of global characteristics of the optimized PMSM. In general, the results show that the optimized PMSM provides a high torque and high-speed expansion performance, and thus facilitates a wide range of applicatio... [more]
A Multi-Criteria Evaluation of Applications Supporting Public Transport Users
Katarzyna Solecka, Marcin Kiciński
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: journey planners, MCDM/MCDA, mobile travel applications, passenger information system, travel information, usability
Reducing the energy consumption of transport in urban areas is possible if appropriate measures are taken to make public transport more attractive. These include all kinds of journey planners that are part of the passenger information system. Various applications available on the market allow passengers to evaluate their usability. This paper presents and compares nine of the most popular journey planners available to iOS and Android users travelling in Krakow. The comparison took into account all the information obtained from the surveys. In addition, using a multi-criteria approach, the final ranking of the set of journey planners was developed. The assessment was made on the basis of a set of nine criteria indicated by travellers as the most important ones. The obtained results showed disproportions in the functionality of particular solutions. They also indicated the apps that are most frequently and willingly used by local (urban city/agglomeration) travellers.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: affordable and clean energy, anaerobic digestion, biomethane, grass, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonisation, integration, pre-treatment, process water
The integration of hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) and anaerobic digestion (AD) can overcome some of the disadvantages of thermal or biological processing alone. This study aims to investigate integrated HTC-AD across a range of integration strategies and HTC processing temperatures (150 °C, 200 °C and 250 °C) to improve the energy conversion efficiency (ECE) of grass, compared to AD alone. The separation of hydrochars (HCs) for combustion and process waters (PWs) for digestion appears to be the most energetically feasible HTC-AD integration strategy, compared to HC or HTC-slurry AD. Hydrochars represent the greater energy carrier with between 81−85% of total energy output. The ECE of grass was improved from 51% to 97% (150 °C), 83% (200 °C) and 68% (250 °C) through integrated HTC-AD. Therefore, lower HTC processing temperatures yield more favourable energetics. However, higher HTC temperatures favour more desirable HC properties as a combustion fuel. The hydrochar produced at 250 °C... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: converter topologies, HVDC, key performance indicators, Open-Delta, sizing
The success of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) applications has fueled the research on modular converter topologies. New modular converter topologies are often proposed, discussed, and sometimes applied in HVDC, as well as other industrial application such as STATCOMs, DC/DC HVDC, medium-voltage direct current (MVDC), etc. The performance evaluation of new modular converter topologies is a complex and time-consuming process that typically involves dynamic simulations and the design of a control system for the new converter topology. Sadly, many topologies do not progress to the implementation stage. This paper proposes a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) related to the cost and footprint of the converter and a procedure designed to rapidly evaluate these indicators for new converter topologies. The proposed methodology eliminates the need for dynamic simulations and control-system design, and is capable of identifying whether a particul... [more]

Keywords: Adsorption, capacity, Carbon Dioxide, mineralization, sandstones, storage
This study investigates the capability of the Southeast Mesohellenic Trough (SE MHT) sandstone formations to serve as a potential reservoir for CO2 storage in response to the emerging climate change issues by promoting environmentally friendly mineral sequestration applications. Sandstone samples, for the first time, were evaluated for their petrographic characteristics, mineral chemistry, geochemical properties, as well as their petrophysical and gas adsorption properties through tests. The sandstones were tested and classified into distinct groups. The most promising site to be considered for pilot CO2 storage testing is the Pentalofos Formation locality since its sandstones display specific mineral phases with the proper modal composition to conceivably react with injected CO2, leading to the development of newly formed and stable secondary mineral phases. The gas adsorption results are also more encouraging for sandstones from this sedimentary formation. All the measured UCS (uniax... [more]
Energy and Conventional and Advanced Exergy Analyses of Low-Temperature Geothermal Binary-Flashing Cycle Using Zeotropic Mixtures

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: advanced exergy analysis, binary-flashing cycle, geothermal energy, inerting mass concentration, zeotropic mixtures
Due to its deep utilization of geobrine and its high net power output, the binary-flashing cycle (BFC) is deemed to be the future geothermal energy power generation technology. The working fluids considered in present analysis are zeotropic mixtures (R245/R600a). The system thermodynamic model is built, and the energy and conventional and advanced exergy analyses are carried out to reveal the real optimization potential. It is demonstrated that the optimal ranges of R245fa mass fraction and working fluid dryness at the evaporator outlet are 0.30~0.50 and 0.40~0.60, considering the thermodynamic performance and the flammability of the zeotropic mixtures, simultaneously. Conventional exergy analysis indicates that the maximum exergy destruction occurs in the condenser, followed by the expander, evaporator, flashing tank, preheater, high-pressure pump and low-pressure pump. Meanwhile, the advanced exergy analysis reveals that the expander should be given the first priority for optimizatio... [more]
Modeling and Analysis of the Harmonic Interaction between Grid-Connected Inverter Clusters and the Utility Grid
Lintao Ren, Hui Guo, Zhenlan Dou, Fei Wang, Lijun Zhang
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: harmonic interaction, output impedance, resonance, virtual synchronous generator
The virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is a promising technology for future utility grids, since it can mimic the output characteristics of a synchronous generator, which provides the necessary inertia to a utility grid. However, the large-scale application of VSGs is limited due to the harmonic interaction between VSGs and the utility grid. Therefore, in order to investigate the stability issue as well as improve the practical application for large-scale power stations, the harmonic interaction mechanism between the VSG cluster and the utility grid is addressed. Firstly, the output impedance model of a single VSG is established, and it is found that the resonance frequency is related to parameters including the output filter, controller, and grid impedance. On this basis, the capacitor current control for a grid-connected inverter based on a VSG is proposed to enhance the resonance suppression. Furthermore, the output impedance of the VSG cluster is established, which reveals the har... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural networks, load frequency control, multi-area power system, multistage controllers, optimization algorithms, renewable energy systems, single-area power system, sliding mode controller
The hybrid power system is a combination of renewable energy power plants and conventional energy power plants. This integration causes power quality issues including poor settling times and higher transient contents. The main issue of such interconnection is the frequency variations caused in the hybrid power system. Load Frequency Controller (LFC) design ensures the reliable and efficient operation of the power system. The main function of LFC is to maintain the system frequency within safe limits, hence keeping power at a specific range. An LFC should be supported with modern and intelligent control structures for providing the adequate power to the system. This paper presents a comprehensive review of several LFC structures in a diverse configuration of a power system. First of all, an overview of a renewable energy-based power system is provided with a need for the development of LFC. The basic operation was studied in single-area, multi-area and multi-stage power system configura... [more]

Keywords: adaptive control, induction motors, nonlinear dynamical systems, variable speed drives
This article proposes a closed-loop (CL) high-starting torque (HST) scalar control scheme (SCS) for induction motors (IM). It endows the recently proposed HST-SCS with high-output torque capability beyond starting after using an outer speed control loop feeding an inner current control loop with adaptive controllers. Presenting a cascade normalized adaptive passivity-based controller (N-APBC) for nonlinear systems encompassing the IM allows obtaining this result. It extends the normalized adaptive controller for the cascade case. As a result, it keeps the HST-SCS simple control scheme without needing variable observers or parameter estimators and employing tuning information only from the motor nameplate and datasheet. Test bench experiments with a 10 HP motor validate the proposal’s effectiveness. Comparative experimental results show that the CL HST-SCS has a required stator phase voltage lower than HST-SCS. The CL HST-SCS applies the adaptive starting voltage curve for a more extend... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, Biomass, combustion, energy value, energy yield, giant miscanthus, heating boilers fouling
The giant miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus) is one of the most essential energy plants. It also finds various alternative uses, including installing belts to prevent soil erosion. Biomass from such belts should be removed and rationally managed every year. The parameters of miscanthus biomass were investigated in terms of its suitability for combustion and anaerobic fermentation. Under the conditions of the experiment, miscanthus achieved a stable yield already in the second year of vegetation, mainly due to the high planting density. Energy parameters turned out to be typical for straw biomass (calorific value 18.06 MJ/kg). Relatively low ash melting temperatures (<1400 °C) and their chemical composition meant a high risk of contamination depositing on heating devices, which is often indicated as a shortcoming of biomass compared to hard coal. Miscanthus silage can be a valuable substrate for anaerobic digestion, but it requires a sufficiently early harvest, which affects the yie... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: feature selection, metaheuristic sine cosine algorithm (SCA), multilevel regulator
Feature selection is the procedure of extracting the optimal subset of features from an elementary feature set, to reduce the dimensionality of the data. It is an important part of improving the classification accuracy of classification algorithms for big data. Hybrid metaheuristics is one of the most popular methods for dealing with optimization issues. This article proposes a novel feature selection technique called MetaSCA, derived from the standard sine cosine algorithm (SCA). Founded on the SCA, the golden sine section coefficient is added, to diminish the search area for feature selection. In addition, a multi-level adjustment factor strategy is adopted to obtain an equilibrium between exploration and exploitation. The performance of MetaSCA was assessed using the following evaluation indicators: average fitness, worst fitness, optimal fitness, classification accuracy, average proportion of optimal feature subsets, feature selection time, and standard deviation. The performance w... [more]

Keywords: fuel cell electric vehicle, hydrogen storage, metal hydride, optimisation algorithm, parameter identification
In a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) powered by a metal hydride tank, the performance of the tank is an indicator of the overall health status, which is used to predict its behaviour and make appropriate energy management decisions. The aim of this paper is to investigate how to evaluate the effects of charge/discharge cycles on the performance of a commercial automotive metal hydride hydrogen storage system applied to a real FCEV. For this purpose, a mathematical model is proposed based on uncertain physical parameters that are identified using the stochastic particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm combined with experimental measurements. The variation of these parameters allows an assessment of the degradation level of the tank’s performance on both the quantitative and qualitative aspects. Simulated results derived from the proposed model and experimental measurements were in good agreement, with a maximum relative error of less than 2%. The validated model was used to establi... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: coniferous waste, energy density, thermal valorization, thermogravimetry
Forestry residue is a renewable energy biomass whose valorization has increased due to the interest in replacing exhaustible and environmentally unfriendly fossil resources. Needles, cones and bark from silver fir were thermally processed by separated and combined torrefaction (250 °C) and pyrolysis (550 °C). The torrefaction removed the humidity and extractives and degraded the hemicelluloses, significantly decreasing the oxygen content to ~11 wt% and increasing the carbon content to ~80 wt%, while enhancing the calorific value of the solids (~32 MJ/kg). The pyrolysis produced solid materials with high amounts of fixed carbon (~60−70 wt%) and high heating values, of ~29 MJ/kg. The combined torrefaction + pyrolysis increased the energy yield of the process and decreased the O/C and H/C atomic ratios to about 0.1 and 0.5, respectively, which is close to those of coals. It also led to condensable products with more homogeneously distributed compounds, regardless of the initial biomass ty... [more]

Keywords: alternative marine fuels, emissions reduction, hydrogen technologies, ship energy use estimation
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) established new strategies that could lead to a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of the shipping sector to address global warming. A major factor in achieving this goal is transitioning to renewable fuels. This implies a challenge, as not only ship-innovative solutions but also a complete low-carbon fuel supply chain must be implemented. This work provides a method enabling the exploration of the potential of low-carbon fuel technologies for specific shipping routes up to larger sea regions. Several aspects including vessel sizes, impact of weather and shipping routes, emissions savings and costs are considered. The local energy use is determined with proven bottom-up prediction methods based on ship positioning data from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) in combination with weather and ship technical data. This methodology was extended by an approach to the generation of a basic low-carbon fuel system topology that ena... [more]

Keywords: informal waste, MCDM, PROMETHEE, slum electrification, waste to energy
Slum/informal settlements are an integral part of a city, with a population projected to reach 3 billion by 2030. It is also expected that the rate of waste generation will more than triple by 2050 in the cities of low-income countries of sub-Saharan Africa. At this rate, the risk to the environment and health of inhabitants are enormous, because the current waste management practices are not guided by legislation on proper use and disposal. This paper proposes the conversion of waste to energy as a solution to this problem. The aim of this study is to apply the PROMETHEE technique with a combination weighting method to obtain the most appropriate waste-to-energy technology for the slum/informal settlements of the Greater Karu Urban area in Nigeria. The findings reveal that the gasification technology outperformed the other technologies, and the affordability of electricity supply from this technology was determined by a general survey conducted on the slum/informal settlements.

Keywords: consensus control, distributed generation, droop control, dSPACE controller, microgrids, virtual impedance
In this paper, power-sharing management control on an AC islanded microgrid is investigated to achieve accurate reactive power sharing. The droop control method is primarily used to manage the active and reactive power sharing among the DGs in the microgrid. However, the line impedance mismatch causes unbalanced reactive power sharing. As a solution a consensus-based adaptive virtual impedance controller is proposed, where the consensus algorithm is used to set the reactive power mismatch; then a virtual impedance correction term is generated through a proportional-integral controller to eliminate the line impedance mismatch. Thus, reactive power sharing is achieved without knowledge of the line impedances or using a central controller. Moreover, the consensus algorithm is used to restore the AC bus voltage to the nominal value by estimating the DGs average voltage using neighbor communication to compensate for the decreased magnitude of the voltage reference. Matlab/Simulink is used t... [more]

Keywords: electrical strength, MgO, molecular dynamics simulation, polylactic acid, thermal properties
Polylactic acid (PLA) is expected to be widely used in green power equipment manufacturing due to its good mechanical properties and biodegradability. In this paper, the effects of MgO with different particle sizes and mass fractions on the thermal and electrical properties of PLA composites were studied. The experiment found that with the increase in MgO particle sizes and mass fractions, the thermal conductivity of MgO/PLA composites showed a rising trend, which was up to 165.4% higher than that of pure PLA. However, the heat resistance first increases and then decreases. For the electrical properties of MgO/PLA composites, the breakdown strength and volume resistivity decrease with an increase in MgO particle size and mass fraction. In order to further study the influence mechanism of the introduction of MgO with different particle sizes and mass fractions on the thermal and electrical properties of MgO/PLA composites, molecular dynamics simulation was used to simulate the glass tra...
