February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacity configuration, Energy Storage, renewable energy station, virtual synchronous compensator (VSCOM)
The uncertainty of high penetration of renewable energy brings challenges to the safe and stable operation of a power system; the virtual synchronous compensation (VSCOM) can shift the demand and compensate real-time discrepancy between generation and demand, and can improve the active support ability for the power system. This paper proposes a novel capacity allocation strategy using VSCOM for renewable energy stations based on fuzzy constraints. Firstly, the basic framework of the VSCOM is constructed with energy storage and reactive power generator (SVG) unit. Secondly, the inertia and standby capacity requirements of high penetration of renewable energy system are modeled; on this basis, a capacity allocation model of each sub unit of the VSCOM is developed, and the investment economy and stable support needs are considered. Thirdly, the uncertainty set of wind power output is defined based on the historical data to find a decision that minimizes the worst-case expected where the w... [more]

This review comprehensively examines biochar, an essential material in an era of climate change for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere. It is inconspicuous, black, lightweight, and very porous, and is produced through the thermal conversion of biomass. Our literature review highlights biochar’s expansive application possibilities. Firstly, its potential to improve soil quality and sequester CO2 has been examined, as well as its utilization in iron and steel manufacturing to minimize the quantity of coke and ultimately reduce CO2 emissions. In industrial manufacturing, the complete elimination of coke can promote environmental neutrality, which is achieved using biochar from biomass for its extrusion. Furthermore, biochar is becoming increasingly significant in modern energy storage technologies and as an important additive in Pickering emulsions, which are also employed in energy storage systems. Additionally, the use of carbon black is a broad topic, and this... [more]

Aqueous zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (AZHSs) are promising candidates for powering mobile devices due to their intrinsically high safety, the high theoretical capacity of zinc anodes, and the wide range of sources of raw materials for activated carbon (AC) cathodes. Here, we report that there is a synergistic effect between the anions of an AZHS electrolyte, which can significantly improve the specific capacity and rate capability of an AC cathode. The results showed that the specific capacities of the AC cathode//2 M ZnSO4(aq)//Zn anode energy storage system were 115 and 41 mAh g−1 at 0.1 and 5 A g−1 current densities, respectively. The specific capacity at a 0.1 A g−1 current density was enhanced to 136 mAh g−1 by doping 0.5% ZnCl2 and 0.5% Zn(CF3SO3)2 in the 2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte. The specific capacity at a 5 Ag−1 current density was enhanced to 69 mAh g−1 by doping 1% ZnCl2 and 0.5% Zn(CF3SO3)2 in the 2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte. Keywords: Energy Storage, experimental device, hydrate, methane, modelling and simulation
This paper focuses on the model of gas hydrate formation in an experimental device, which allows the circulation of the resulting mixture (water and gas) and significantly accelerates the process of hydrate formation in the laboratory. A 3D model was developed to better imagine the placement of individual parts of the device. The kinetics of hydrate formation were predicted from equilibrium values of chemical potentials. The aim of solving the equations of state gases in the mathematical model was to optimize the parameters involved in the formation of hydrates. The prediction of the mathematical model was verified by numerical simulation. The mathematical model and numerical simulation predict the chemical reaction evolving over time and determine the amount of crystallized water in the reactor. A remarkable finding is that the deviation of the model and simulation at the initiation the calculation of crystallized water starts at 76% and decreases over time to 2%. Subsequently, the nu... Keywords: electric vehicle (EV), Energy Storage, fast charging station, stochastic charging demand
Multi-stall fast charging stations are often thought to require megawatt-range grid connections. The power consumption profile of such stations results in high cost penalties due to monthly power peaks and expensive linkage fees. A local energy storage system (ESS) can be used to address peak power demands. However, no appropriate sizing method is available to match specific constraints, such as the contracted power available from the grid and the projected recharging demand. A stochastic distribution of charging events was used in this paper to model power demand profiles at the station, with a one minute resolution. Based on 100 simulated months, we propose an optimum number of charging points, and we developed an algorithm to return the required local ESS capacity as a function of the available grid connection. The role of ESSs in the range of 100 kWh to 1 MWh was studied for all stations with up to 2000 charging events per week. The relevance of ESS implementation was assessed alon... [more]

Two-tank molten salt heat storage systems are considered to be the most mature thermal storage technology in solar thermal power plants. As the key part of the system, the thermal performance of molten salt tanks is of great importance. An experimental thermal storage system with a new type of molten salt as a thermal energy storage medium has been built to investigate the temperature distribution of molten salt inside the tank during the cooling process from 550 °C to 180 °C. The temperature distribution of the salt was obtained, which reveals that temperature stratification appears at the bottom of the tank within the height of 200 mm. The position, with the maximum temperature difference of 16.1 °C, is at the lower edges of the molten salt storage tank. The temperature distribution was also measured to deepen our understanding of the insulation foundation, which shows that the maximum temperature appears at the middle upper part of the foundation and decreases radially. Phase-homogeneous LiFePO4 powders have been synthesized. The content of impurity crystalline phases was less than 0.1%, according to synchrotron diffractometry (SXRD) data. Anisotropic crystallite sizes L¯Vhkl were determined by XRD. A low resistance covering layer of mechanically strong ferric-graphite-graphene composite with impregnated ferric (Fe3+) particles < 10 nm in size increases the cycleability compared to industrial cathodes. In accordance with the corrosion model, the destruction of the Fe3+-containing protective layer of crystallites predominates at the first stage, and at the second stage Fe escapes into the electrolyte and to the anode. The crystallite size decreases due to amorphization that starts from the surface. The rate capability, Q(t), has been studied as a function of L¯Vhkl, of the correlation coefficients rik between crystallite sizes, of the Li diffusion coefficient, D, and of the electrical relaxation time, τel. For the test cathode with a thickness of 8... [more]

Since existing energy system models often represent storage behavior in a simplified way, in this work, a tool chain for deriving consistent storage model parameters for optimization models is developed. The aim of our research work is to identify what are non-negligible influences on the the technical characteristics and dynamic behavior of the storage, to quantify the effect of these influences, and represent these effects in the model. This paper describes the developed tool chain and presents its application using an example. The tool chain consists of the steps “parameter screening”, “dynamic simulation”, “regression analysis” and “refining optimization model”. It is investigated which parameters have an influence on the storage system (here pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES)), how the storage behavior is modeled, which influencing factors have a measurable effect on the system, and how these findings can be integrated into optimization models. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Energy Storage, intermittent power supply system, power supply efficiency, supercapacitor
To solve the challenge of low efficiency and high operation cost caused by intermittent high-power charging in an energy storage tram, this work presents a collaborative power supply system with supercapacitor energy storage. The scheme can reduce the peak power of the transformer, therefore reducing the grid-side capacity and improving the efficiency. However, there is a lack of quantitative analysis on the performance improvement of the solution. The energy efficiency models of critical components are proposed to evaluate the efficiency of the system, and energy efficiency optimization is conducted. Taking an operational tram line as an example, the improved charging efficiency and reduced operating costs are derived. Further, the ground energy storage capacity is designed and implemented. The measured data demonstrates that the energy efficiency of the optimized charging system is improved, which proves its effectiveness and practicability.

Keywords: concentrated solar power, Energy Storage, levelized cost of electricity, thermionic energy conversion, thermoelectric generation
Small-size concentrated solar power (CSP) plants are presently not diffused due to a too-high levelized cost of electricity (LCoE), contrarily to CSP plants with capacity >100 MW, which provide LCoE < 20 cEUR/kWh. The integration of solid-state converters within CSP plants can enhance the scalability and economic competitiveness of the whole technology, especially at smaller scales, since the conversion efficiency of solid-state converters weakly depends on the size. Here a system with a high-temperature thermionic energy converter (TEC), together with an optical concentrator designed to be cheap even providing high concentration ratios, is proposed to improve the cost-effectiveness of CSP plants, thus achieving conditions for economic sustainability and market competitiveness. This is possible since TEC can act as a conversion topping cycle, directly producing electricity with a possible conversion efficiency of 24.8% estimated by applying realistic conditions and providing useful... Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), design optimization, Energy Storage, heat sinks, power converters, Surrogate Model
As forced-air cooling for heat sinks is widely used in the cooling design of electrical and electronic equipment, their thermal performance is of critical importance for maintaining excellent cooling capacity while reducing the size and weight of the heat sink and the equipment as a whole. This paper presents a method based on the combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and surrogate models to optimize heat sinks for high-end energy storage converters. The design takes the thermal resistance and mass of the heat sink as the optimization goals and looks for the best design for the fin height, thickness and spacing, as well as the base thickness. The analytical and numerical results show that the thermal resistance and mass of the heat sink are reduced by the proposed algorithms, as are the temperatures of the heating elements. Test results verify the effectiveness of the optimization method combining CFD simulation with surrogate models.

Decarbonisation of the energy sector is becoming increasingly more important to the reduction in climate change. Renewable energy is an effective means of reducing CO2 emissions, but the fluctuation in demand and production of energy is a limiting factor. Liquid hydrogen allows for long-term storage of energy. Hydrogen quality is important for the safety and efficiency of the end user. Furthermore, the quality of the hydrogen gas after liquefaction has not yet been reported. The purity of hydrogen after liquefaction was assessed against the specification of Hydrogen grade D in the ISO-14687:2019 by analysing samples taken at different locations throughout production. Sampling was carried out directly in gas cylinders, and purity was assessed using multiple analytical methods. The results indicate that the hydrogen gas produced from liquefaction is of a higher purity than the starting gas, with all impurities below the threshold values set in ISO-14687:2019. The amount fraction of water... [more]

Although alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is the most widespread technology for hydrogen production by electrolysis, its electrochemical and fluid dynamic optimization has rarely been addressed simultaneously using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. In this regard, a two-dimensional (2D) CFD model of an AWE cell has been developed using COMSOL® software and then experimentally validated. The model involves transport equations for both liquid and gas phases as well as equations for the electric current conservation. This multiphysics approach allows the model to simultaneously analyze the fluid dynamic and electrochemical phenomena involved in an electrolysis cell. The electrical response was evaluated in terms of polarization curve (voltage vs. current density) at different operating conditions: temperature, electrolyte conductivity, and electrode-diaphragm distance. For all cases, the model fits very well with the experimental data with an error of less than 1% for the po... [more]

In order to solve the capacity shortage problem in power system frequency regulation caused by large-scale integration of renewable energy, the battery energy storage-assisted frequency regulation is introduced. In this paper, an adaptive control strategy for primary frequency regulation of the energy storage system (ESS) was proposed. The control strategy combined virtual droop control, virtual inertial control, and virtual negative inertial control. The virtual inertial control was used to reduce the frequency change rate, and the virtual droop control was used to reduce the steady-state frequency deviation. The virtual droop control and the virtual inertia control were adopted in the frequency deterioration stage to slow down the frequency drop. While in the frequency recovery stage, the virtual negative inertia control worked together with the virtual droop control to accelerate the frequency recovery. Besides, the coefficients of the control methods were related to the state of ch... [more]
