Development of LoRa Communication System for Effective Transmission of Data from Underground Coal Mines
July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas monitoring, IoT-based system, LoRa communication, safety, underground coal mine
Underground coal mining is a challenging and hazardous occupation that requires constant monitoring of environmental parameters to ensure the safety of miners. A handful of research has been carried out in developing wireless monitoring devices to monitor underground mine workings using Wi-Fi and ZigBee, which has limitations such as limited range, interference, reliability, power consumption, and security. The main objective of this study is to develop an Underground Gas Monitoring Device using LoRa communication for the effective transmission of monitored data. The testing was carried out in an underground mine model to measure the propagation of the LoRa signal with a line of sight and non-line of sight. It was observed that the system performs fairly well in both situations. During testing, it was observed that there was a drop in RSSI at 14 m for non-line of sight, and beyond 17 m no signal was received. Hence, for every 15 m, a booster is required to be placed to maintain efficie... [more]

Application of an Improved Link Prediction Algorithm Based on Complex Network in Industrial Structure Adjustment
July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: complex networks, industrial structure (IS), link prediction algorithm, mixed similarity
For a healthy industrial structure (IS) and stable economic development in China, this study proposes an improved link prediction algorithm (LP) based on complex networks. The algorithm calculates the similarity by constructing a mixed similarity index. A regional IS network model is built in the study, and the direction of IS adjustment is calculated with the mixed similarity indicators. In this study, the prediction accuracy of the proposed improved LP algorithm in the real network dataset is up to 0.944, which is significantly higher than that of the other algorithms. In the reality of IS optimization, industries of high similarity could be obtained through similarity algorithms, and reasonable coordinated development strategies are proposed. In addition, the simulated IS adjustment strategy in this study shows that it is highly sustainable in development, which is reflected in its lower carbon emissions. The optimization of IS adjustment could be achieved through IS network model a... [more]

A Mathematical Model for Force Prediction in Single Point Incremental Sheet Forming with Validation by Experiments and Simulation
July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: contact area, finite element model, forming forces, forming limit diagram, incremental sheet forming
Incremental sheet forming (ISF) is an emerging technology that has shown great potential in forming customized three-dimensional (3D) parts without the use of product-specific dies. The forming force is reduced in ISF due to the localized nature of deformation and successive forming. Forming force plays an important role in modeling the process accurately, so it needs to be evaluated accurately. Some attempts have been made earlier to calculate the forming force; however, they are mostly limited to empirical formulae for evaluating the average forming force and its different components. The current work presents a mathematical model for force prediction during ISF in a 3D polar coordinate system. The model can be used to predict forces for axis-symmetric cones of different wall angles and also for incremental hole flanging. Axial force component, resultant force in the r-θ plane, and total force have been calculated using the developed mathematical model appearing at different forming... [more]

Experimental Investigation on the Influence of Temperature on Coal and Gas Outbursts
July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bursting liability, coal and gas outbursts, crack evolution, cracking mechanism, energy dissipation, thermal damage
With the increasing mining depth, the dynamic disaster of coal and gas outbursts in coal mines has become increasingly prominent, and the bursting liability of coal and rock mass in deep coal seam mining is a necessary condition for the occurrence of rock burst and an important index to measure the failure of coal and rock mass. Thermal damage leads to rock instability and failure, which seriously influences the safe and efficient operation of coal mines. To investigate the effect of thermal damage on the bursting liability of deep coals, the burst tendency index of standard coal was measured after subjecting it to thermal damage at different temperatures. The effects of different thermal damage temperatures on the uniaxial compressive strength index, dynamic failure duration, stiffness ratio index, effective impact energy index, residual energy index change rate, and impact energy velocity of the coal and the influence of the post-peak failure mode of the coal were evaluated. Highly Sensitive Ethylene Sensors Based on Ultrafine Pd Nanoparticles-Decorated Porous ZnO Nanosheets and Their Application in Fruit Ripeness Detection
July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ethylene sensors, fruit ripeness, porous ZnO nanosheets, ultrafine Pd nanoparticles
Ethylene is the most common ripening phytohormone in fruits, and excess ethylene can overripen the fruit. However, the in-field detection of ethylene is still limited. In this work, ultrafine Pd nanoparticles-decorated porous ZnO nanosheets (UPNP ZnO nanosheets) were conveniently synthesized through a facile solvent reduction method. The UPNP ZnO nanosheets were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrum, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The ZnO nanosheets were uniformly coated with Pd nanoparticles. The size of the Pd nanoparticle was very small, with a diameter of approximately 2 nm. Due to the unique structure of the porous ZnO nanosheets and the excellent catalytic properties of the ultrafine Pd nanoparticles, the as-prepared samples showed very high sensing performance in ethylene detection. The lowest detection concentration was 10 ppb, which is the lowest detection limit to our knowledge.... [more]

July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: deepwater, dynamic covalent crosslinking, loss-circulation material, reservoir protection, thixotropy degradation
The fractured granite reservoir is well developed in Yongle block, which leads to severe drilling fluid loss-circulation. To solve the technical problem of both plugging and reservoir protection, on the basis of comprehensive literature research and laboratory tests at home and abroad, a polymer with an appropriate molecular weight, an organic crosslinking agent and other auxiliary materials were screened. In addition, a kind of high-temperature resistant loss-circulation plugging gel, which could be formed by timing and self-degradation, was developed. The high-strength gel loss-circulation system can be established by the development of a dynamic covalent borate ester bond crosslinking agent, which can crosslink with polyvinyl alcohol and xanthan gum. This system is of formidable strength and can be used for loss-circulation control in a fractured formation. The dynamic covalent borate ester bond tends to break due to the peroxide glue breaker under low pH levels, which can accelerat... [more]

Study on the Influence of the Strain-Softening of the Surrounding Rock with Buried Depth on Gas Extraction Boreholes
July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: buried depth, gas extraction, gas pressure, Mohr–Coulomb, permeability, strain-softening
The buried depth of coal seams in China gradually increases as shallow resources decrease. The purpose of this article is to reveal the effect of buried depth on gas extraction boreholes. Firstly, we analyzed the shortcomings of the Mohr−Coulomb (M-C) constitutive model for simulating excavation problems and introduced the strain-softening (S-S) model and its advantages. Subsequently, we constructed the gas extraction models with different buried depths based on the S-S model and combined them with the evolution equations for permeability and the equations for gas migration. Then, we studied the difference between the M-C and S-S models using numerical simulations. We found that the influence of the S-S phenomenon in the surrounding rock of boreholes is more significant as the buried depth increases—that is, the strain-softening has a significant buried depth effect. When the buried depths were 300, 500, and 700 m, the maximum ratios of permeability to the initial permeability obtained... [more]

Effect of Flexible Operation on Residual Life of High-Temperature Components of Power Plants
July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: creep–fatigue behavior, flexible operation, response surface model
Electricity generation from renewable energy sources is emerging as a result of global carbon emission reduction policies. However, most renewable energy sources are non-dispatchable and cannot be adjusted to meet the fluctuating electricity demands of society. A flexible operation process has been proposed as an effective solution to compensate for the unstable nature of renewable energy sources. Thermal load fluctuations during flexible operation may cause creep−fatigue damage to the high-temperature components of thermal power plants, as they are designed with a focus on creep damage under a constant power level. This study investigated the residual life of high-temperature components, such as a superheater tube and a reheater header, to failure under flexible operation conditions using finite element analysis and empirical models. First, we determined an analytical solution for the straightened superheater tube under thermal conditions and compared it with the numerical solution to... [more]

A Study on the Development and Evolution of Fractures in the Coal Pillar Dams of Underground Reservoirs in Coal Mines and Their Optimum Size
July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal mine underground reservoir, coal pillar dam, fissure development and evolution law, maximum water level, optimum size of coal pillar
The western mining areas of China, which are rich in coal resources, lack water resources. Large-scale and high-intensity coal mining in China’s western mining areas has led to the loss of groundwater resources. Underground reservoirs in coal mines are an effective means of achieving the protection and utilization of water resources in these western mining areas. One of the important standards for the safety of an underground reservoir in a coal mine involves checking whether the development of cracks in the coal pillar dam body, under the dual stress conditions of overlying strata and lateral water pressure, passes through the coal pillar dam body or its top and bottom plates, forming a seepage channel for mine water. This article focuses on the safety issues associated with coal pillar dams in the underground reservoirs of coal mines. From the perspectives of overlying rock pressure and lateral water pressure on coal pillar dams, mechanical models, numerical calculations, and similar... [more]

NMR-Based Analysis of Fluid Occurrence Space and Imbibition Oil Recovery in Gulong Shale
July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: imbibition, nuclear magnetic resonance, occurrence space characteristics, shale oil
The Gulong shale oil reservoir is situated in freshwater to slightly saline lacustrine basins mainly consisting of a pure shale geological structure, which is quite different from other shale reservoirs around the world. Currently, the development of Gulong shale oil mainly relies on hydraulic fracturing, while the subsequent shut-in period for imbibition has been proven to be an effective method for enhancing shale oil recovery. To clarify the characteristics of the fluid occurrence space and the variation in the fluid occurrence during saltwater imbibition in Gulong shale, this paper carried out porosity and permeability tests on Gulong shale cores and analyzed the fluid occurrence space characteristics and imbibition oil recovery based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). In the porosity and permeability tests, T2 distributions were used to correct the porosity measured by the saturation method to obtain the NMR porosity. Ultrafast Energy Transfer Dynamics in a Cyanobacterial Light-Harvesting Phycobilisome
July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: energy transfer, light-harvesting antenna, phycobilisomes, time-resolved spectroscopy
The phycobilisomes (PBSs) of cyanobacteria and red algae are their primary light-harvesting antennas, which play key role in light harvesting and energy transportation to the photosynthetic reaction center with extraordinarily high efficiency. The mechanism of energy transfer in PBS should be investigated with a tight combination between biological structural information and an ultrafast time-resolved dynamic analysis. We recently demonstrated the study of energy transfer in PBSs from a thermophilic cyanobacterium, Thermosynechococcus vulcanus NIES 2134 (T. 2134), with the cryo-EM model resolved at a near-atomic resolution. The time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy of the PBS with a sub-picosecond resolution was discovered at 77 K. Deconvolution of the fluorescence decay curve was then used to reveal the energy transfer channels and the associated transfer rates. Integrated Geophysical Prediction of Goaf and Water Accumulation in Pingshuo Dong Open-Cut Mine with Ultrashallow and High Drops
July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: goaf prediction, integrated geophysical prospecting, open-cut mine, water accumulation
To address safety problems caused by goaf and water accumulation in open-pit mines, the shallow three-dimensional seismic method and transient electromagnetic method were integrated and applied to detect the mining goaf distribution scope and the water accumulation conditions. In view of the special topographic conditions of an ultrashallow layer and high drop in an open-pit mine, we proposed utilizing bin homogenization and multidomain joint denoising to improve the reliability of seismic data. By using seismic-sensitive attributes to predict the goaf, the transient electromagnetic method was employed to further predict the water accumulation in the goaf. The results show that the shallow seismic method could clearly reflect the reflected-wave variation features of the goaf. The features of a junction between a normal seam and goaf vary obviously, and the prediction effect of the goaf boundary with high resolution is in line with the actual situation. July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: evaporation, recycling, Single Hot Thermocouple Technique, spinel formation, vanadium pentoxide
During the steelmaking process, a great amount of slag is generated as a by-product. Vanadium-bearing steelmaking slags are classified as hazardous and require special handling and storage due to the toxicity of vanadium pentoxides. At the same time, such slags are valuable sources for the recovery of vanadium. The present work reviews the investigations on vanadium recovery from CaO-SiO2-FeO-V2O5 thin film slags under the neutral and oxidizing conditions in the temperature range 1653 K to 1693 K (1380 °C to 1420 °C) using Single Hot Thermocouple Technique (SHTT). The slag samples were analyzed by SEM/EDX. The results indicated that vanadium pentoxide evaporation can be up to 17.73% under an oxidizing atmosphere, while spinel formation under an argon atmosphere was detected in the conditions of thin film slags.

A Possible Explicit Equation Fitting Method for the Gaseous Heat Capacity Near the Critical Point Based on Density and Temperature
July 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: explicit equation, fitting, heat capacity, molecular kinetic energy, molecular potential energy
CO2 is a potential fluid for absorbing and accumulating thermal energy; an accurate and fast calculation method for the heat capacity is essential for the study of the flow state near the critical point. However, the calculation of the heat capacity near the critical point by the equations suggested by NIST can easily be divergent, such as for CO2, nitrogen, methane, etc. Therefore, an explicit fitting equation was studied. The fitting equation, which used density and temperature as variables and contained three constants, was derived from the nature of heat capacity change (molecular kinetic energy and potential energy). Based on the heat capacity data of the NIST WebBook, the heat capacity of CO2 is taken as the example for the equation deduction and parameter fitting. The three constants were defined in order by Origin fitting software. By this new approach, it is found that the heat capacity at the critical point is below 1% deviant from that of the NIST WebBook. Subject: Environment
Keywords: by-product, environmental implications, Ethanol, food waste, life cycle assessment
In this paper, a life cycle assessment was used to evaluate fuel ethanol production from food waste with a capacity of 20 tons/day. The energy and pollution emissions during the whole process were recorded and compared by the method of electricity conversion to standard coal. Different indicators, such as GWP (global warming potential), ODP (ozone depletion potential), AP (acid potential), EP (possibility of eutrophication), POCP (photochemical oxidation potential), and DUST (dust), were used to perform an environmental impact analysis with and without by-product utilization. The result shows that the indicator sequence under the weighted factor sequence was AP > DUST > GWP > ODP > EP > POCP. The consideration of by-products decreased the values of GWP, AP, and DUST significantly; EP declined slightly; ODP and POCP increased; and the overall energy output was negative. The consideration of by-product utilization was determined to be environmentally friendly.
