Jinfeng Wang, Wanying Chang, Jing Xie.
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: experimental platform, EXV opening, PI control algorithm, response curve, self-tuning
In this paper, the electronic expansion valve (EXV) on the single-tube heat exchange experimental platform was used as a research object. Firstly, the EXVs were selected according to the experimental requirements, and the functional parameters were set. Subsequently, the effective opening ranges of the EXVs were determined by manual control, and the control effects of the EXVs installed at the front and back ends of the test section were compared. Finally, by self-tuning and optimizing the best response curves, the proportional and integral coefficients suitable for the experimental platform were obtained; thus, the automatic intelligent control of EXV based on the proportional integral (PI) control algorithm was realized. From setting EXV functional parameters to realizing PI control, an appropriate experimental system-debugging solution for the whole process could be obtained. Based on the solution, the system stability could be improved, and the transition process time could be shor... [more]
A Novel Radial Basis Function Neural Network with High Generalization Performance for Nonlinear Process Modelling
Yanxia Yang, Pu Wang, Xuejin Gao.
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: convergence analysis, generation performance, local generalization error bound, radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), self-organizing structure method
A radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), with a strong function approximation ability, was proven to be an effective tool for nonlinear process modeling. However, in many instances, the sample set is limited and the model evaluation error is fixed, which makes it very difficult to construct an optimal network structure to ensure the generalization ability of the established nonlinear process model. To solve this problem, a novel RBFNN with a high generation performance (RBFNN-GP), is proposed in this paper. The proposed RBFNN-GP consists of three contributions. First, a local generalization error bound, introducing the sample mean and variance, is developed to acquire a small error bound to reduce the range of error. Second, the self-organizing structure method, based on a generalization error bound and network sensitivity, is established to obtain a suitable number of neurons to improve the generalization ability. Third, the convergence of this proposed RBFNN-GP is proved theor... [more]

Tomislav Senčić, Vedran Mrzljak, Vedran Medica-Viola, Igor Wolf.
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD simulation, large marine engine, scavenging process, sector mesh
The scavenging process is an important part of the two-stroke engine operation. Its efficiency affects the global engine performance such as power, fuel consumption, and pollutant emissions. Slow speed marine diesel engines are uniflow scavenged, which implies inlet scavenging ports on the bottom of the liner and an exhaust valve on the top of the cylinder. A CFD model of such an engine process was developed with the OpenFOAM software tools. A 12-degree sector of the mesh was used corresponding to one of the 30 scavenging ports. A mesh sensitivity test was performed, and the cylinder pressure was compared to experimental data for the analyzed part of the process. The scavenging performances were analyzed for real operation parameters. The influence of the scavenge air pressure and inlet ports geometric orientation was analyzed. The scavenging process is analyzed by means of a passive scalar representing fresh air in the cylinder. Isosurfaces that show the concentration of fresh air wer... [more]
Improved Thermoeconomic Energy Efficiency Analysis for Integrated Energy Systems
Sha Liu, Jiong Shen.
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: exergy cost modeling, integrated energy system, irreversible loss, performance analysis, thermoeconomics
The structure of an integrated energy system is complex. Thermoeconomics can play a significant role in the analysis of IES because it makes up for the deficiency of traditional thermodynamic analysis and provides new information on the cost and energy conversion efficiency. When using thermoeconomics to analyze the energy efficiency of an IES, one key issue that needs to be solved is how to transfer irreversible loss across thermal cycles, so that the mechanism of system performance degradation can be fully revealed. To this end, an irreversible cost and exergy cost integrated analysis method based on improved thermoeconomics is proposed, in which the cumulative and transmission impact of irreversible loss across thermal cycles is evaluated using linear transformation of matrix. A case study on a 389MW combined cooling, heating, and power IES demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The proposed approach can reveal the key links impairing the overall energy efficiency... [more]

Lina Han, Zemin Li, Yang Feng, Lijiang Wang, Bowen Li, Zijie Lei, Wenyan Wang, Weiwei Huang.
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Li-S batteries, multiwalled carbon nanotube coating, ramie carbon, shuttle effect
Lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries stand out among many new batteries for their high energy density. However, the intermediate charge−discharge product dissolves easily into the electrolyte to produce a shuttle effect, which is a key factor limiting the rapid development of Li-S batteries. Among the various materials used to solve the challenges related to pure sulfur cathodes, biomass derived carbon materials are getting wider research attention. In this work, we report on the fabrication of cathode materials for Li-S batteries based on composites of sulfur and biomass-derived porous ramie carbon (RC), which are coated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). RC can not only adsorb polysulfide in its pores, but also provide conductive channels. At the same time, the MWCNTs coating further reduces the dissolution of polysulfides into the electrolyte and weakens the shuttle effect. The sulfur loading rate of RC is 66.3 wt.%. As a result, the initial discharge capacity of the battery is... [more]

The elasticity of white blood cells (WBCs) provides valuable insight into the condition of the cells themselves, the presence of some diseases, as well as immune system activity. In this work, we describe a novel process of refined control of WBCs’ elasticity through a combined use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and the microelectrode array device. The capture and controlled deformation of gold nanoparticles enriched white blood cells in vitro are demonstrated and quantified. Gold nanoparticles enhance the effect of electrically induced deformation and make the DEP-related processes more controllable.

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: industrial processes, multi-objective optimization, Optimization
Industrial processes provide several of the products and services required for society. However, each industry faces different challenges from different perspectives, all of which must be reconciled to obtain profitable, productive, controllable, safe and sustainable processes. In this context, multi-objective optimization has become a powerful tool to aid the decision-making mechanism in the synthesis, design, operation and control of such processes. The solution to the mathematical models provides the necessary tools to asses the system performance in terms of different metrics and evaluate the trade-offs between the objectives in conflict. The number of applications of multi- objective optimization in industrial processes is ample and each application has its own challenges. In the present literature review, a broad panorama of the applications in multi-objective optimization is presented, including future perspectives and open questions that still need to be addressed.
Metal Ions, Metal Chelators and Metal Chelating Assay as Antioxidant Method
İlhami Gulcin, Saleh H. Alwasel.
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: antioxidant activity, antioxidant methods, antioxidants, metal chelating, metals
Heavy metals are essential for a wide range of biological processes, including the growth and reproduction of cells, synthesis of biomolecules, many enzymatic reactions, and the body’s immunity, but their excessive intake is harmful. Specifically, they cause oxidative stress (OS) and generate free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in metabolism. In addition, the accumulation of heavy metals in humans can cause serious damage to different organs, especially respiratory, nervous and reproductive and digestive systems. Biologically, metal chelation therapy is often used to treat metal toxicity. This process occurs through the interaction between the ligand and a central metal atom, forming a complex ring-like structure. After metals are chelated with appropriate chelating agents, their damage in metabolism can be prevented and efficiently removed from the body. On the other hand, heavy metals, including Zn, Fe and Cu, are necessary for the suitable functioning of different protei... [more]

Water surface plastic pollution turns out to be a global issue, having aroused rising attention worldwide. How to monitor water surface plastic waste in real time and accurately collect and analyze the relevant numerical data has become a hotspot in water environment research. (1) Background: Over the past few years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been progressively adopted to conduct studies on the monitoring of water surface plastic waste. On the whole, the monitored data are stored in the UAVS to be subsequently retrieved and analyzed, thereby probably causing the loss of real-time information and hindering the whole monitoring process from being fully automated. (2) Methods: An investigation was conducted on the relationship, function and relevant mechanism between various types of plastic waste in the water surface system. On that basis, this study built a deep learning-based lightweight water surface plastic waste detection model, which was capable of automatically detectin... [more]

Yen-Hui Lin, Bing-Han Ho.
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biological activated carbon reactor, COD, kinetic model, kinetics, textile dye wastewater
The kinetics and performance of a biological activated carbon (BAC) reactor were evaluated to validate the proposed kinetic model. The Freundlich adsorption capacity (Ka) and adsorption intensity constants (n) obtained from the batch experiments were 1.023 ± 0.134 (mg/g) (L/mg)1/n and 2.036 ± 0.785, respectively. The effective diffusivity (Ds) of the substrate within the activated carbon was determined by comparing the adsorption model value with the experimental data to find the best fit value (4.3 × 10−4 cm2/d). The batch tests revealed that the yield coefficient (Y) was 0.18 mg VSS/mg COD. Monod and Haldane kinetics were applied to fit the experimental data and determine the biokinetic constants, such as the maximum specific utilization rate (k), half-saturation constant (K), inhibition constant (Ki), and biomass death rate coefficient (kd). The results revealed that the Haldane kinetics fit the experimental data better than the Monod kinetics. The values of k, KS, Ki, and kd were 3... [more]

Localizing Bifurcations in Non-Linear Dynamical Systems via Analytical and Numerical Methods
Jan Kyzioł, Andrzej Okniński.
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bifurcation sets, bifurcations of dynamics, metamorphoses of amplitude curves, pendulums
In this paper, we study the bifurcations of non-linear dynamical systems. We continue to develop the analytical approach, permitting the prediction of the bifurcation of dynamics. Our approach is based on implicit (approximate) amplitude-frequency response equations of the form FΩ,A;c̲ =0, where c̲ denotes the parameters. We demonstrate that tools of differential geometry make possible the discovery of the change of differential properties of solutions of the equation FΩ,A;c̲ =0. Such qualitative changes of the solutions of the amplitude-frequency response equation, referred to as metamorphoses, lead to qualitative changes of dynamics (bifurcations). We show that the analytical prediction of metamorphoses is of great help in numerical simulation.

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: approximation calculation, bridge engineering, fundamental frequency, Rayleigh method, tensioned string bridge
As a new type of composite bridge, the dynamic structural characteristics of a tensioned string bridge need to be deeply studied. In this paper, based on the structural characteristics of a tensioned string bridge, the Rayleigh method is used to derive formulas for calculating the frequencies of vertical, antisymmetric and lateral bending vibrations. The characteristics of the vertical and lateral bending vibration frequencies are summarized. The fundamental frequencies of the antisymmetric vertical bending and lateral bending of the tensioned string bridge are the same as that of the single-span beam under the corresponding constraint conditions. The shape and physical characteristics of the main cable have no effect on the frequency. The vertical bending symmetrical vibration frequency of the tensioned string bridge is greater than the corresponding symmetrical vibration frequency of the simply supported beam. The shape and physical characteristics of the main cable have a greater im... [more]

Keywords: antimicrobial drug, ciprofloxacin, degradation, ultrasound
Ciprofloxacin (CIP), as a common antibiotic used in human clinical and livestock farming, is discharged into natural water bodies and its concentration has increased in the last years. Its stable chemical structure is difficult to remove by conventional techniques. Residual ciprofloxacin in the environment has become an emerging micropollutant that promotes the generation of resistance genes of bacteria and endangers ecosystem balance and human health. Removal of ciprofloxacin from water by the system of ultrasound/electric field/sodium persulfate (US/E/PS) was investigated. Firstly, CIP degradation affects by different oxidation methods, such as ultrasonic oxidation, electro-oxidation, and persulfate oxidation, and their four combined oxidation methods (ultrasound-activated persulfate oxidation, electro-activated persulfate oxidation, ultrasound-enhanced electro-oxidation, and ultrasound-enhanced electro-activated persulfate oxidation), on the target contaminants were compared. Carbon Black Replacement in Natural Rubber Composites Using Dry-Milled Calcium Carbonate, Soy Protein, and Biochar
Steven C. Peterson.
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: biochar, calcium carbonate, carbon black, natural rubber, Paulownia, soy protein
Recent discoveries have shown that calcium carbonate and soy protein interactions can be used to reinforce rubber composites with improvements on the effective crosslink density and moduli. However, the method to incorporate the soy protein into the rubber matrix may be costly to scale up, since it involves microfluidization and drying steps prior to rubber compounding. In this work, a simpler process involving dry-milled calcium carbonate and soy protein was used to explore filler blends of calcium carbonate, soy protein, biochar, and carbon black. By blending these filler materials in various ratios, rubber composite samples with 40−50% of the carbon black replaced by sustainable alternatives were made. These composites had essentially the same tensile strength, with better toughness and elongation properties relative to the carbon black control. These composites would reduce dependence on petroleum and be more amenable to the rubber composite compounding infrastructure.

Yang Li, Fangyuan Ma, Cheng Ji, Jingde Wang, Wei Sun.
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: discriminative feature extraction, Fault Detection, global local preserving projection, multiple marginal fisher analysis
Feature extraction plays a key role in fault detection methods. Most existing methods focus on comprehensive and accurate feature extraction of normal operation data to achieve better detection performance. However, discriminative features based on historical fault data are usually ignored. Aiming at this point, a global-local marginal discriminant preserving projection (GLMDPP) method is proposed for feature extraction. Considering its comprehensive consideration of global and local features, global-local preserving projection (GLPP) is used to extract the inherent feature of the data. Then, multiple marginal fisher analysis (MMFA) is introduced to extract the discriminative feature, which can better separate normal data from fault data. On the basis of fisher framework, GLPP and MMFA are integrated to extract inherent and discriminative features of the data simultaneously. Furthermore, fault detection methods based on GLMDPP are constructed and applied to the Tennessee Eastman (TE) p... [more]

Simulation results show that scheduled non-continuous operation can effectively improve the outlet temperature of the heat extraction fluid circulating in the DBHE. The heat extraction rates of Mode 1 is 190.9 kW for mass flowrate of 9 kg/s; in Mode 2 and Mode 3 cases, the rates change to 304.7 kW and 293.0 kW, respectively. The daily op... [more]
Reassessment of Thin-Layer Drying Models for Foods: A Critical Short Communication
Sencer Buzrul.
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: drying curves, Modelling, regression, uncertainty
Modeling the thin-layer drying of foods is based on describing the moisture ratio versus time data by using a suitable mathematical model or models. Several models were proposed for this purpose and almost all studies were related to the application of these models to the data, a comparison and selecting the best-fitted model. A careful inspection of the existing drying data in literature revealed that there are only a limited number of curves and, therefore, the use of some models, especially the complex ones and the ones that require a transformation of the data, should be avoided. These were listed based on evidence with the use of both synthetic and published drying data. Moreover, the use of some models were encouraged, again based on evidence. Eventually, some suggestions were given to the researchers who plan to use mathematical models for their drying studies. These will help to reduce the time of the analyses and will also avoid the arbitrary usage of the models.

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrode structure, molecular sieve, palm-oil biodiesel, transesterification, water removal
Biodiesel, which is composed of mono-alkyl esters of long carbon-chained fatty acids, is used as an alternative fuel to petro-diesel. The water content of the reactant mixture of feedstock oil influences the extent of transesterification and thus the fuel characteristics. Lower water content in feedstock oil is generally suggested for successful transesterification. This experimental study removed water from the reactant mixture of feedstock palm oil and methanol during transesterification using various systems composed of either electrodes or molecular sieves with rotary vibration. The effect of input electrical energy, number of electrodes, vibration modes, and operating time on the amount of water removed from the reactant mixture and the fuel properties of the final biodiesel product were analyzed and compared with those achieved using molecular sieves. The results show that the biodiesel—after water was removed during transesterification—appeared to have increased kinematic viscos... [more]
