State-Space Approach for SPMSM Sensorless Passive Algorithm Tuning
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM), rotor flux observer, sensorless control, speed control, stability analysis
Sensorless algorithms for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) have achieved increasing interest in the technical literature over the last few years. They can be divided into active methods and passive methods: the first inject high-frequency signals exploiting rotor anisotropy, whereas the second are based on observers. Recently, a sensorless control based on a rotor flux observer has been presented in the technical literature, which gives very accurate results in terms of rotor position estimation and robustness. In this paper, the aforementioned observer is considered and a procedure for choosing stabilizing gains of the observer is proposed. The contribution of the paper is three-fold: the mathematical modelling of the rotor flux observer, the methodology for the definition of the observer gains, and the presentation of the experimental results.

A Comprehensive Harmonic Analysis of Current-Mode Power Amplifiers
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: current-mode power amplifiers, harmonic analysis, high-frequency power amplifiers
This work presents a comprehensive theoretical analysis of current-mode power amplifiers as a function of input power for different biasing classes under the common simplifying assumption of constant transconductance and hard current cut-off/saturation. Typically, the theoretical analysis of power amplifier performance and behavior are carried out only at maximum output power. However, to achieve high data-rates, modern telecommunication systems adopt signals characterized by a very high peak-to-average power ratio, thus it is useful to analyze the power amplifier behavior as a function of power back-off. Moreover, in many cases, to enhance the efficiency and/or to apply harmonic shaping techniques, a clipped drain-source current, which approaches a square wave, is required. The classical analysis can be extended to low power levels only under the assumption of power-independent conduction angle, which is true only for class-A and class-B amplifiers, and does not take into account poss... Filterless, Digital Class-BD Audio Amplifiers with Constant Common Mode Output Voltage
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: digital Class-D audio amplifier, electromagnetic interference (EMI), filterless Class-D amplifier, linearized pulse width modulation (LPWM)
This paper presents new and original architectures and implementations of two filterless, open-loop digital Class-BD audio amplifiers with constant common mode (CM) output voltage. The first, low-power amplifier consists of four ultrahigh-current EL7158 pin drivers, the OUT pins of which form the H bridge. The drivers are controlled from the extended LBDD PWM modulator and have appropriately set voltage levels on the VL and VH pins. The second proposed amplifier consists of two cooperating H-bridge power stages (HBS) implemented on complementary MOSFET pairs and powered by two different voltages. Both HBSs are driven by four EL7158 pin drivers having appropriately adjusted voltage levels on the VL and VH pins and controlled by an extended LBDD PWM modulator. The hybrid 9 bit DPWM modulator uses a linearized Class-BD double-sided modulation scheme with pre-compensation, enabling the most faithful emulation of natural NBDD PWM and, thus, providing attractive spectral characteristics at t... Shaft Voltage Reduction Method Using Carrier Wave Phase Shift in IPMSM
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: bearing faults, fault tolerance, pulse width modulation inverters, space vector pulse width modulation
Common-Mode Voltage (CMV) induces shaft voltage and bearing current due to the electrical interaction with the parasitic capacitance of the motor. CMV, shaft voltage, and bearing current are considered the major causes of bearing fault. Motor fault in a traction system poses a risk of accidents. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the CMV and the shaft voltage to ensure the reliability of the bearing. However, some existing CMV reduction methods are based on asynchronized space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM), which will cause unacceptable harmonic distortion at a low switching frequency. Alternatively, some CMV reduction methods based on synchronized SVPWM burden the processor because they require a lot of calculation. In this paper, the method to reduce CMV and shaft voltage is proposed using carrier wave phase shift in SVPWM. CMV is explained in traditional SVPWM, and CMV is reduced by shifting the carrier wave phase of one phase. The simulation model is constructed through M... [more]

Design and Analysis of a Permanent Magnet Vernier Machine with Non-Uniform Tooth Distribution
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: cogging torque, magnetic flux harmonic, non-uniform tooth distribution, permanent magnet vernier machine
To improve the torque performance of the permanent magnet vernier machine in the direct-drive system for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), this paper proposes the topology of non-uniform tooth distribution. This distribution, considering the additional flux harmonics, aims to contribute to torque improvement, whereas the cogging torque also increases at the same time. A phasors method is proposed to solve the issue caused by the non-uniform structure, adjusting the mechanic angle of each tooth reasonably to restrict the cogging torque. In addition, the non-uniform design is illustrated in detail, which includes the method of grouping the teeth, considering the factors of series pole ratio and winding layout. By using the three-dimensional finite element method, torque is significantly increased without additional torque ripple, which satisfies the desired design target.

Direct Fuzzy CMAC Sliding Mode Trajectory Tracking for Biaxial Position System
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: direct fuzzy cmac sliding mode control (DFCMACSMC), permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), position feedback sensor, precision motion control, trajectory tracking control
High-precision trajectory control is considered as an important factor in the performance of industrial two-axis contour motion systems. This research presents an adaptive direct fuzzy cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) sliding mode control (DFCMACSMC) for the precise control of the industrial XY-axis motion system. The FCMAC was utilized to approximate an ideal controller, and the weights of FCMAC were on-line tuned by the derived adaptive law based on the Lyapunov criterion. With this derivation in mind, the asymptotic stability of the developed motion system could be guaranteed. The two-axis stage system was experimentally investigated using four contours, namely, circle, bowknot, heart, and star reference contours. The experimental results indicate that the proposed DFCMACSMC method achieved the improved tracking capability, and so reveal that the DFCMACSMC scheme outperformed other schemes of the model uncertainties and cross-coupling interference.

Two-Coil Receiver for Electrical Vehicles in Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: automotive, coil design, dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT), e-mobility, electric vehicle (EV), electrified transportation, inductive power transmission (IPT)
Dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) of electric vehicles (EVs) is the future of urban mobility. The DWPT is often based on a series of short track pads embedded in road pavement that wirelessly transfers electrical energy to EVs equipped with a pickup coil for battery charging. An open problem with this technology is the variation of the coupling factor as a vehicle switches from one transmitting coil to another during its motion. This can cause a significant change in power with possible power spikes and holes. In order to overcome these issues, a new architecture is here proposed based on two pick-up coils mounted in the vehicle underneath. These identical receiver coils are placed in different positions under the vehicle (one in front and the other in the rear) and are activated one at a time so that inductive coupling is always good enough. This innovative configuration has two main advantages: (i) it maintains a nearly constant coupling factor, as well as efficiency and transfe... [more]

A Novel Approach to Transverse Flux Machine Construction
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: induction motor, permanent magnet synchronous motor, transverse flux machine
The article presents a concept for a new design of the well-known Transverse Flux Machine (TFM) made with the use of a flat core used in classical electrical machines. The proposed design was first analytically verified and was subsequently verified using the finite element method, which fully corroborated the results. The simulations show that a set of three single-phase TFM machines with slotted flat rotor yokes generates a torque over three times greater than that of an induction motor and twice as large as Fractional Slot Concentrated Winding—Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (FSCW-PMSM). The performed comparative calculations confirmed that the torque generated by machines operating on principles similar to TFM can generate a torque much greater than those currently in common use.

Symmetrical Cascaded Switched-Capacitor Multilevel Inverter Based on Hybrid Pulse Width Modulation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: cascaded multilevel inverter, PWM modulation, reactive power, switched-capacitor
Multilevel inverters have been widely used in various industrial applications such as renewable energy generation and electric vehicles. An improved circuit of symmetrical cascaded switched-capacitor multilevel inverter is proposed so that the reactive power is absorbed by its power supply instead of capacitors. Then, a special hybrid pulse width modulation strategy combing level-shifted pulse width modulation (LS-PWM) and phase-shifted pulse width modulation (PS-PWM) was developed for the inverter. With this modulation algorithm, the power between cascaded units is automatically balanced, and the voltage of the capacitor in each unit is also automatically balanced to the dc input voltage. In addition, the optimized capacitor voltage ripple makes it possible to use a smaller capacitor to produce a better output voltage waveform. Theoretical analysis, simulation and experimental results show that the equivalent switching frequency of the cascaded multilevel inverter is twice the origina... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: constant current output, constant voltage output, misalignment, wireless power transfer
This paper presents a series hybrid wireless charging system with an active adjustable circuitry offering constant current and constant voltage output characteristics. The series hybrid system consists of the inductor−capacitor−capacitor (LCC) and series-series (SS) networks are used for improving charging pad misalignment tolerance. An active switch is employed to provide an adjustable CC and CV output for different battery charging stages. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed method, a 310 W prototype was built. A systematic optimization in the parameter of the proposed topology to achieve relative constant output was analyzed within a certain range of the designed operating region. The experimental results indicate that the output current fluctuation is less than 5% with load variations, and the output voltage fluctuation is less than 5% with load varying from 19 to 70 Ω, as the pick-up pads misaligned within 50% of the pad outer diameter.

A Fast Response Robust Deadbeat Predictive Current Control for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: deadbeat predictive current control, extended state observer, surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor, transient response
Deadbeat predictive current control (DBPCC) has the characteristic of fast current response, but it is sensitive to motor parameters. Observer-based DBPCC can eliminate the steady state current tracking error when parameter mismatch exists. However, the actual current will deviate from the reference current during transient state in the case of inductance mismatch. In this paper, a fast response robust deadbeat predictive current control (FRRDBPCC) method is proposed for surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM). Firstly, the current tracking error caused by inductance mismatch during transient state is analyzed in detail. Then, an extended state observer (ESO) is proposed to estimate the lumped disturbance caused by parameter mismatch. Based on discrete time ESO, the predicted currents are used to replace the sampled currents to compensate for one-step delay caused by calculation and sampling. Furthermore, an online inductance identification algorithm and a modified p... [more]

Rotor Position Synchronization in Central-Converter Multi-Motor Electric Actuation Systems
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: aerospace, central converter, field-oriented control, induction machines, volts-per-hertz
The aerospace industry is increasingly transitioning from hydraulic and pneumatic drives to power-electronic based drive systems for reduced weight and maintenance. Electromechanical thrust reverse actuation systems (EM-TRAS) are currently being considered as a replacement for mechanical based TRAS for future aircraft. An EM-TRAS consists of one or more power-electronic drives, electrical motors, and gear-trains that extend/retract mechanical members to produce a drag force that decelerates the aircraft upon landing. The use of a single (“central”) power electronic converter to simultaneously control a set of parallel induction machines is a potentially inexpensive and robust method for implementing EM-TRAS. However, because the electrical motors may experience different shaft torques—arising from differences in wind forces and a flexible nacelle—a method to implement rotor position synchronization in central-converter multi-motor (CCMM) architectures is needed. This paper introduces a... [more]

Effects of Electro-Magnetic Properties of Obstacles in Magnetic Resonant Wireless Power Transfer
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: finite element analysis, magnetic resonance, obstacle, wireless power transmission
Magnetic resonant wireless power transmission (MRWPT) is a method of transmitting power over a long distance at a specific frequency. Because this system uses an alternating magnetic field, if an object with electrical/magnetic properties is placed between the transmit and receive coils, this will have a significant impact on the power transfer. In this paper, the effect of an obstacle located between two coils on the resonance frequency and transmission power is analyzed. A wireless power transmission system with a resonant frequency of 20 kHz was designed, and ferrite, aluminum, and carbon steel were selected as obstacles with permeability or conductivity. After simulating the system with finite element analysis (FEA) with these obstacles, the results were verified through actual experiments. The results show that the permeability of the obstacle decreases the resonant frequency, and the conductivity increases the resonant frequency and greatly reduces the output power. In addition,... Improved Voltage Flux-Weakening Strategy of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor in High-Speed Operation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: flux-weakening control, high-speed operation, permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), voltage closed-loop control
This paper presents an improved voltage flux-weakening strategy of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) in a high-speed operation. The speed control performance using voltage flux-weakening control is not affected by the motor parameters, so it is used in various motors for high-speed operations. In general, the voltage flux-weakening control uses voltage references to generate a flux axis current reference. However, there may be errors between the voltage reference and the actual voltage flowing into the motor. This causes an error in the current reference generation and reduces the efficiency of the inverter and motor due to the use of more current. In this paper, the problems that can occur due to voltage errors were analyzed through theoretical approaches and simulations, and improved voltage flux-weakening control to resolve these problems was presented. This method’s advantage is that the error between the voltage reference and the voltage applied to the motor can be minim... [more]

Efficient Wireless Drone Charging Pad for Any Landing Position and Orientation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: battery charging, drone, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), wireless power transfer (WPT)
A wireless charging pad for drones based on resonant magnetic technology to recharge the internal battery is presented. The goal of the study was to design a robust, reliable and efficient charging station where a drone can land to automatically recharge its battery. The components of the wireless power transfer (WPT) system on board the drone must be compact and light in order not to alter the payload of the drone. In this study, the non-planar receiving coil of the WPT system is integrated into the drone’s landing gear while the transmitting pad is designed to be efficient for any landing point and orientation of the drone in the charging pad area. To meet these requirements, power transmission is accomplished by an array of planar coils integrated into the ground base station. The configuration of the WPT coil system, including a three-dimensional receiving coil and a multicoil transmitter, is deeply analyzed to evaluate the performance of the WPT, considering potential lateral misa... An online parameter estimation methodology using the d-axis current injection, which can estimate the distorted voltage of the current-controlled voltage source inverter (CCVSI), the varying dq-axis inductances, and the rotor flux, is proposed in this study for interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives in the constant torque region. First, a d-axis current injection-based parameter estimation methodology considering the nonlinearity of a CCVSI is proposed. Then, during current injection, a simple linear model is developed to model the cross- and self-saturation of the dq-axis inductances. Since the d-axis unsaturated inductance is difficult to obtain by merely using the recursive least square (RLS) method, a novel tuning method for the d-axis unsaturated inductance is proposed by using the theory of the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) with the combination of the RLS method. Moreover, to improve the bandwidth of the current loop, an intelligent proportional-integral-de... [more]

Keywords: active rectifier, adaptive delay compensation, wireless power transfer
A CMOS active rectifier with digitally adaptive delay compensation for power efficiency improvement is presented in this work. The power transistors are turned on and turned off in advance under the control of the regenerated compensation signals, which are generated by the proposed compensation control circuit; therefore, the reverse current is eliminated, and the efficiency is increased. Simulation results in a standard 0.18 μm CMOS process show that the turn-on and turn-off delay of the rectifier is effectively compensated. The power efficiency is up to 90.6% when the proposed rectifier works at the operation frequency of 13.56 MHz.

Design and Implementation of Periodic Control for a Matrix Converter-Based Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drive System
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: digital signal processor, matrix converter, periodic controllers
The matrix converter-based IPMSM drive has 360 Hz virtual DC-bus voltage variations which produce severe stator harmonic currents. To solve this problem, a speed-loop classical periodic controller and two current-loop periodic controllers, including a classical periodic controller and a selective harmonic controller, are proposed in this paper. By using the proposed methods, the harmonic currents are obviously reduced and the speed responses of the IPMSM are clearly improved. A detailed analysis is discussed. A digital signal processor, type SH7237, manufactured by Renesas Electronics Corporation is used for the control algorithms. Experimental results show that those proposed periodic controllers reduce up to nearly 32% of the total harmonic distortion at the stator currents, and also apparently improve the transient, tracking, and repetitive load disturbance speed responses.

Keywords: HF power amplifier, impedance matching, loss-free resistor (LFR), maximum power transfer, POPI networks, renewable energy sources, transmission systems, wireless power transfer
This paper describes the matching of various loads to sources (including nonlinear ones). The purpose of matching is to extract the maximum available power from the source. This has particular importance for renewable sources and energy-harvesting devices, in which unused energy is just wasted. The main innovations in this paper include (and followed by examples) simplified calculation of the matching parameter for a controllable load and matching by means of a family of power-conservative two-port networks, denoted POPI (Pin = Pout), such as transformers, gyrators, loss-free resistors (LFRs) and series LFRs (SLFRs). An additional innovation described in this paper is a new, simplified model of an HF power amplifier based on the series LFR concept. This model predicts that the efficiency of the HF power amplifier operated under the matched-mode condition can significantly exceed the 50% efficiency limit that is predicted by the conventional model. As HF power amplifiers drive antennas... [more]

The Method to Determine the Turns Ratio Correction of the Inductive Current Transformer
March 6, 2023 (v1)

Keywords: current error, distorted current, higher harmonics, inductive current transformer, secondary winding, turn ratio correction, window type CT
This paper presents the method for evaluation of the turns ratio correction of the inductive current transformer using the magnetization curves determined at the non-load state and in the load conditions. The presented method may be applied to determine even a fractional winding correction factor. The standard IEC 61869-2 provides the method to determine the turns ratio correction of the tested CT from the measured rms values of voltages on its primary and secondary winding in the non-load state. However, this approach is limited in determining the significant changes in the number of turns of the secondary winding. Moreover, the paper presents the influence of the applied turns ratio correction on the frequency characteristics of the current error and phase displacement of the inductive current transformers evaluated for the transformation of the distorted current.

Keywords: ferrite core transformer, impedance matching, magnetically coupled resonance, optimal impedance matching, wireless power transfer
An efficient wireless power transfer (WPT) system is proposed using two self-resonant coils with a high-quality factor (Q-factor) over medium distance via an adaptive impedance matching network using ferrite core transformers. An equivalent circuit of the proposed WPT system is presented, and the system is analyzed based on circuit theory. The design and characterization methods for the transformer are also provided. The optimal impedance matching conditions for maximum power transfer efficiency according to distance are satisfied simply by changing the turn ratio of the transformers. The proposed WPT system maintains effective power transfer efficiency with little Q-factor degradation because of the ferrite core transformer. Subject: Other
Keywords: common-mode current, common-mode voltage, permanent magnet synchronous motor, two-level voltage source inverter
This paper proposes a space vector modulation (SVM)-based common-mode (CM) currents reduction method of an H8 inverter for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. There are power quality issues in the PMSM drive systems, such as current distortions and CM electromagnetic interference (EMI) due to the fast-switching operation of the inverter. These issues are related to CM voltage (CMV) and CM current (CMC). Although several studies have been conducted to reduce the CMV and CMC, some CMV variations and CMCs are still generated in the real implementation. Unlike conventional methods, the proposed method selects the voltage vectors with similar CMV levels and arranges them considering the series-connected switch operation of the H8 inverter in a voltage vector modulation sequence. At a low modulation index (MI), the proposed method completely restricts the CMV variations into six times. At high MI, the proposed method synthesizes the reference voltage vector differently, dependi... [more]
