In this study, we performed the electromagnetic and mechanical characteristic analyses of an 8-pole 12-slot interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). Permanent magnet synchronous motors are classified into surface permanent magnet synchronous motor and interior permanent magnet synchronous motors according to the type of rotor. The IPM type is advantageous for high-speed operation because of the structure where the permanent magnet is embedded inside the rotor, and it has the advantage of having a high output density by generating not only the magnetic torque of the permanent magnet, but also the reluctance torque. However, such a motor has more vibration/noise sources than other types, owing to changes in reluctance. The sources of motor noise/vibration can be broadly classified into electromagnetic, mechanical, and aerodynamic sources. Electromagnetic noise sources are classified into electromagnetic excitation sources, torque pulsations, and unbalanced magnetic forces (UM... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: circuit modeling, numerical analysis, planar coils, wireless charging, wireless power transfer
This article presents the results of the proposed numerical and analytical analysis of the Wireless Power Transfer System (WPT). The system consists of a transmitting surface and a receiving surface, where each of them is composed of planar spiral coils. Two WPT systems were analysed (periodic and aperiodic) considering two types of coils (circular and square). In the aperiodic system, the adjacent coils were wound in the opposite direction. The influence of the type of coils, the winding direction, the number of turns, and the distance between the coils on the efficiency of the WPT system was compared. In periodic models, higher efficiency was obtained with circular rather than square coils. The results obtained with both proposed methods were consistent, which confirmed the correctness of the adopted assumptions. In aperiodic models, for a smaller radius of the coil, the efficiency of the system was higher in the square coil models than in the circular coil models. On the other hand,... [more]

Keywords: battery charger, design procedure, inductive power transfer, wireless power transfer
This paper analyzes two different design procedures for a series-parallel compensated WPT battery charger, based on different definitions of the operating resonant frequency in the condition of maximum link efficiency. The behaviour of the voltage gain magnitude and the input impedance angle of the resulting WPT links is studied for different loads and coupling coefficients. The design algorithms are supported by analytical formulas derived from an exact circuit analysis of the WPT link, avoiding approximations as far as possible. To support the theoretical approach a case study is proposed, in which both design procedures are implemented considering specifications in line with the actual automotive standards. To conclude, a characterization of the efficiency in both cases is derived.

Keywords: inductive power transfer, magneto-inductive waves, resonator array, transmission lines, wireless power transfer
The possibility of increasing the transmission efficiency in mid-range wireless power transfer (WPT) applications can be achieved by inserting resonant relay coils between the transmitting and receiving sides of the device, forming an array of magnetically coupled resonant circuits, over which a receiver can be placed. This is a very cheap solution for improving the performance of the WPT apparatus, even if the complexity of the system increases, requiring a complete and detailed investigation for a smart design and control of the apparatus. The presented study investigates the current distribution in the coils of the array, which revealed strong peaks in magnitude depending on the load and receiver position. The analysis is carried out with the transmission line (TL) theory and it is performed for different positions of the receiver, as well as for different load conditions. Furthermore, a real application is considered and discussed, which includes the presence of a power converter a... [more]

Keywords: nature-inspired tuning procedure, permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), state feedback controller (SFC)
This paper proposes an auto-tuned constrained state-feedback controller (SFC) to attenuate periodic disturbances present in permanent magnet synchronous (PMSM) motor drives. An online auto-tuning process of SFC has been made using a powerful nature-inspired optimization algorithm—artificial bee colony (ABC)—to achieve high-performance operation of the drive. A novel performance index is proposed to minimize the impact of pulsating torque and obtain smooth-velocity of the drive. The proposed approach is a practical application of classic control theory with novel engineering-tools for improving the operational quality of a PMSM drive system. The obtained results are compared with a classical cascade control structure (CCS) based on proportional-integral (PI) regulators and disturbance observer-based control (DOBC). A detailed time- and frequency-domain analysis has been conducted in respect to periodic disturbances present in a PMSM drive system. Moreover, the robustness of SFC against... [more]

Multiple techniques continue to be simultaneously utilized in the condition monitoring and fault detection of electric machines, as there is still no single technique that provides an all-round solution to fault finding in these machines. Having various machine fault-detection techniques is useful in allowing the ability to combine two or more in a manner that will provide a more comprehensive application-dependent condition-monitoring solution; especially, given the increasing role these machines are expected to play in man’s transition to a more sustainable environment, where many more electric machines will be required. This paper presents a novel non-invasive optical fiber using a stray flux technique for the condition monitoring and fault detection of induction machines. A giant magnetostrictive transducer, made of terfenol-D, was bonded onto a fiber Bragg grating, to form a composite FBG-T sensor, which utilizes the machines’ stray flux to determine the internal condition of the... The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is a highly efficient energy saving machine. Due to its simple structural characteristics, good heat radiation capability, and high efficiency, PMSMs are gradually replacing AC induction motors in many industrial applications. The PMSM has a nonlinear system and lies on parameters that differ over time with complex high-class dynamics. To achieve the excessive performance operation of a PMSM, it essentially needs a speed controller for providing accurate speed tracking, slight overshoot, and robust disturbance repulsion. Therefore, this article provides an overview of different robust control techniques for PMSMs and reviews the implementation of a speed controller. In view of the uncertainty factors, such as parameter perturbation and load disturbance, the H∞ robust control strategy is mainly reviewed based on the traditional control techniques, i.e., robust H∞ sliding mode controller (SMC), and H∞ robust current controller based on Hamilt... Subject: Other
Keywords: inertia identification, interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC), speed regulation
This article presents an improved linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) method for interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives. The proposed method adopts a dual LADRC structure. The outer LADRC-based speed regulator adopts position feedback instead of speed feedback so that the low-pass filter for speed calculation can be eliminated. The inner LADRC-based current regulator incorporates a maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) operation scheme to improve the torque output capacity and the efficiency of the motor. In addition, considering the variation of load inertia in real applications, a systematic modelling and analysis on the effect of inertia mismatch is presented. To enhance the robustness of the drive system to inertia mismatch, an inertia identification method is proposed, in which the inertia information is extracted from the estimated disturbance of speed loop LESO. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on a 1.0-kW IPMSM drive p... [more]

Keywords: dynamics simulation, electric vehicle, open-source platform, powertrain simulation
As an important component of vehicle design and energy conservation, electric vehicle dynamics simulation is essential, especially under complicated testing conditions. The current commercial vehicle simulation software is mostly used for fuel vehicle dynamics simulation, which lacks accurate electric powertrain parts and open sources. To address this problem, this paper proposes an open-source and flexible vehicle dynamics simulation platform that includes 27 degrees of freedom (DOFs) based on Simulink, which can compatibly support both traditional vehicle dynamics simulations and electric vehicle dynamics simulations. In addition, the platform can support module customization, which is convenient for researchers. Although this platform still needs some iterations to reach industrial and commercial standards, it can already achieve parameter consistency under the stability demands in general scenarios. We believe this work should receive research attention and participation to provide... [more]

In this paper, a novel extended permanent magnet synchronous motor model is presented that incorporates a quadratic flux-current function to represent the polarity-dependent saliency. The proposed model enables the design of sensorless polarity detection algorithms required by the initial position detection of permanent magnet synchronous motors. The novelty of the model is that it integrates the polarity-dependent saliency into the traditional machine model and introduces a new machine parameter, the polarity-dependent saliency coefficient, to specify the Hessian matrix of the flux-current function. A measurement method is presented for determination of the elements of the Hessian and the polarity-dependent saliency coefficient. The solution of the model is given for high-frequency sinusoidal pulsating voltage injection. Experimental results show that the proposed extended model accurately predicts the amplitudes and phases of the second harmonics of the motor currents, which are the... [more]

Keywords: hyperlocal model, parameter perturbation, permanent magnet synchronous motor, sliding mode observer
In this paper, a finite control set model-free predictive current control (FCS-MFPCC) of a permanent magnet synchronous motor is presented. The control scheme addresses the problems of large current fluctuation and decline of the motor system performance during parameter perturbation for the traditional finite control set model predictive current control (FCS-MPCC). Firstly, the mathematical model of the motor is analyzed and derived during parameter perturbation, and a new hyperlocal model of the motor is established based on this mathematical model. Secondly, a finite control set model-free predictive current controller is designed based on the new hyperlocal model, and a current error correction factor is introduced to correct the prediction error. Meanwhile, the stability of the observer is demonstrated via the Lyapunov theory. The simulation results show that the proposed control strategy reduces current fluctuation compared with the FCS-MPCC strategy, and the system is robust dur... [more]

Keywords: magnetic field suppression, magnetic resonance coupling, phased array, wireless power transfer
In the wireless power transmission (WPT) to electric vehicles (EVs) in parking lots, there is a risk of abnormal heat generation due to the absorption of the magnetic field in metallic foreign objects. Accordingly, currently available products are equipped with a function that automatically halts power transmission when a metallic foreign object is detected. However, if possible, continuing power transmission while suppressing the magnetic field absorption may be an another solution. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel function which enables wireless power transmission with high efficiency while suppressing the magnetic field absorption of metallic foreign objects. In this study, it was assumed that a metallic foreign body was present in an arbitrary point in a two-dimensional plane and the power transmission was conducted by the phased array WPT. An algorithm using particle swarm optimization (PSO) to search for the optimal combination of the phase and amplitude of the coil input v... [more]

This paper proposes a decentralized control structure and method for a multilevel single-phase power converter using space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM). The focus of this paper is on the decentralized control structure for the power converter cells that will exchange information with neighboring cells in order to adjust the switching vector and switching time for each cell. In this study, the switching vectors and the corresponding switching times of each cell will be self-determined based on the phase angle of two neighboring cells. Normally, SVPWM applied to the multilevel power converters need complete information about the total cells and cell’s position to build a control algorithm. Meanwhile, a decentralized space vector pulse width modulation (DSVPWM) method is proposed that can be applied to power converters with any number of cells and can be considered as a multilevel SVPWM method. In addition, the decentralized multilevel single-phase power converter has high flexib... [more]

This paper investigates the vibration enhancement or weakening effect caused by permanent magnet synchronous motor radial and tangential force formed by tooth harmonics. First, the analytical expressions of an air gap magnetic field are deduced based on a permanent magnet synchronous motor model. Then, the Maxwell stress tensor method is employed to calculate the radial and tangential force density produced by permanent magnet magnetomotive force harmonics and tooth harmonics. Moreover, the spatial phase difference between the minimum non-zero spatial order radial and tangential force waves under loading operation are also obtained. It is followed by stator vibration deformation induced by radial and tangential force waves, and the vibration enhancement or weakening effect is discussed. This study shows that the tangential force wave has a significant influence on the vibration performance similar to the radial force wave. At specific frequencies, superposition of the radial and tangen... [more]

Keywords: beam collection efficiency, frequency diverse array, phased array, wireless power transmission
Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a well-known problem, and has received wide attention in the next generation industrial applications and consumer electronics. On the other hand, frequency diverse array (FDA) is a new concept with the ability to generate a range-angle dependent beampattern. Therefore, some researchers are engaged in designing WPT systems based on the FDA framework (FDA-WPT) instead of phased arrays. Unlike phased arrays, the FDA beampattern is time-variant. Therefore, existing beam collection efficiency models based on the phased array are not suitable for the FDA-WPT system. More importantly, the time-variant property of FDAs is usually ignored in the literature, and the system configuration of the target area where the power-harvesting end is located does not conform to the actual WPT scenario. In this paper, we derive and present accurate models of the FDA-WPT system. The power transfer performance of the corrected FDA-WPT system is then compared with the phased arr... [more]

As a technology that makes power transfer more flexible, wireless power transfer (WPT) technology has become a hot research topic in recent years. However, most of the existing studies are based on a DC−DC WPT system. If applied to AC loads, the traditional system usually contains multiple energy conversion stages, which lead to a low transmission efficiency and therefore higher costs. Besides, the necessary large electrolytic capacitors make the system unreliable and bulky. The goal of this study is to design a reliable and efficient WPT system featuring constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) output for AC loads. In this work, an inductor−capacitor−capacitor series (LCC−S) enveloped modulation wireless power transfer (EM−WPT) system is proposed. The design of the proposed system is elaborated in this paper, including the working principle of the system’s power converters, the relationship between CC/CV output characteristics and the input current, and the control strategy of... As an epoch-making technique, wireless power transfer (WPT) technology has been used in electric vehicle charging devices in recent years, but the electromagnetic leakage problem has always plagued numerous researchers. The traditional wireless charging systems use a solid metal aluminium plate to shield electromagnetic leakage generally. Although it has a good shielding performance, it will seriously reduce the transmission efficiency of wireless charging systems. In this paper, an aluminium plate with a series of mesh holes of different sizes is proposed to weaken the eddy current in partial areas on the plane. Therefore, without changing the maximum magnetic induction intensity of the shielded magnetic field, the influence of the aluminium plate on the electrical parameters of the wireless power transfer system is minimized, and the transmission efficiency of the system is improved. The Ansys Maxwell software has been adopted to simulate the transfer and shielding performance. Final... [more]

In this paper, we present the use of a solid bar winding for a permanent magnet synchronous motor dedicated to the electric drive of a full electric boat. For the winding, we chose to use cylindrical bars for the electric vehicle motorizations of a power lower than 10 kW. The choice of a 60 VDC low-voltage power distribution requires resorting to a solid bar winding with one bar per slot (single turn). Hence, the solid conductors dissipate additional copper losses (higher AC resistance). An analysis of these additional copper losses was carried out to accurately assess the effective AC resistance of the winding and, hence, the efficiency of the electric motor. A prototype for a POD propulsion was designed, built and tested. The characteristics of its electric motor were presented. The feasibility this type of cylindrical bar winding has been proven. A study on the optimization of the slot has demonstrated the performance of this type of winding.

The purpose of this paper is the design, analysis, and optimization of a new structure of a permanent magnet vernier machine (PMVM) with a high torque density and low rotor losses. First, the modulation principle and topology of this PMVM is introduced. Then, its average torque and rotor loss are enhanced and reduced by optimizing the flux modulation poles distribution. Then, a new topological structure of a rotor with a flux barrier is introduced to reduce the rotor losses due to the decrease of each harmful harmonic. Through the analysis of the structure of the PMVM with the flux barrier, the influence of the parameters on the performance is built. After that, a multi-objective optimization algorithm is used to optimize the PMVM so as to obtain the optimal performance. Moreover, the electromagnetic pe... [more]

To investigate the parameters of sucrose dust explosion, the minimum ignition energy (MIE) and minimum ignition temperature (MIT) were evaluated. The experiments tested the MIE of sucrose dust under different conditions of dust quantity, ignition delay time (IDT), and powder injection pressure (PIP). The experiments tested the MIT of different particle sizes. The results demonstrate that the MIE of sucrose powder under three conditions was an open-up quadratic polynomial. When the dust quantity, the IDT, and PIP were 0.5 g (417 g/m3), 90 ms, and 150 kPa, respectively, the MIE was 58.9 mJ, 62.6 mJ, and 52.4 mJ. The MIT was positively correlated with the particle size of sucrose dust, and the MIT was 340 °C. At the molecular level, the “O−H” bonds of the sucrose molecule hydroxyl groups were broken by the discharge of electrodes or high temperature to generate H2.
