Genetic-Algorithm-Based Optimization of a 3D Transmitting Coil Design with a Homogeneous Magnetic Field Distribution in a WPT System
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: 3D transmitting coil design, Genetic Algorithm, homogeneous magnetic field, Optimization, wireless power transfer
In magnetically coupled resonant wireless power transfer (MCR-WPT) systems, the nonhomogeneous magnetic field of the transmitting coil can lead to frequency splitting phenomena and lower efficiency. In this paper, a 3D transmitting coil (TX) with a homogeneous magnetic field distribution is proposed. The proposed coil structure consists of two layers with different numbers of turns per layer, i.e., with different current distributions. To achieve a homogeneous magnetic field distribution with a high magnetic field value and a low profile of the 3D coil structure, the optimal layer placement and current distribution were optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA). The prototype of the optimized coil was fabricated, and its magnetic field distribution was measured. The measurement results agreed more than 95% with the simulation results. The measured homogeneous area was at least 12.5% larger than reported in the literature. By using a different current distribution, the profile of the 3D... [more]

Static-Errorless Rotor Position Estimation Method Based on Linear Extended State Observer for IPMSM Sensorless Drives
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), linear extended state observer (LESO), sensorless control
This article presents a static-errorless rotor position estimation method based on the linear extended state observer (LESO) for interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives. Two second-order LESOs are utilized to estimate the α-β axis back-EMFs. A third-order LESO is incorporated into the quadrature phase-locked loop (QPLL) to achieve a high robustness of position tracking against external disturbance. In addition, considering that the nonideal back-EMF will bring DC and harmonic fluctuation errors to the estimated position, an enhanced LESO-based QPLL with static-errorless rotor position estimation is proposed. On the one hand, the DC position esti mation error caused by the phase lag of the back-EMF estimator is analyzed and compensated. On the other hand, to suppress the position harmonic fluctuations induced from the nonsinusoidal back-EMFs, a second-order generalize integrator (SOGI) is embedded in the feedforward path of the LESO-based QPLL. The experimental result... [more]

Robust Sliding Mode Control of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with an Improved Power Reaching Law
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: chattering, permanent magnet synchronous motor, robustness, sliding mode control
To improve the suppression ability of uncertain disturbance of the sliding mode control driving system of the surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) and to reduce the chattering of the control output, a robust sliding mode control strategy with an improved power reaching law (IPRL) is proposed in this paper. Compared with the traditional fast power reaching law (FPRL), the IPRL incorporates the sum of the power terms of the system state variables into the conventional power terms, and uses hyperbolic tangent saturation function to replace the piecewise function, which can effectively suppress the sliding mode chattering and improve the convergence speed of the system state to the sliding mode surface. Furthermore, the robust sliding mode speed controller and sliding mode current controller of the SPMSM are designed separately with the IPRL, and detailed simulation verification is carried out to reveal the effectiveness of the IPRL. Simulation and experimental result... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: electric vehicles (EVs), electrified powertrain, interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), permanent magnet (PM) flux linkage, super twisting algorithm (STA), uniform robust exact differentiator (URED)
The highly efficient Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) is ubiquitous choice in Electric Vehicles (EVs) for today’s automotive industry. IPMSM control requires accurate knowledge of an immeasurable critical Permanent Magnet (PM) flux linkage parameter. The PM flux linkage is highly influenced by operating temperature which results in torque derating and hence power loss, unable to meet road loads and reduced life span of electrified powertrain in EVs. In this paper, novel virtual sensing scheme for estimating PM flux linkage through measured stator currents is designed for an IPMSM centric electrified powertrain. The proposed design is based on a Uniform Robust Exact Differentiator (URED) centric Super Twisting Algorithm (STA), which ensures robustness and finite-time convergence of the time derivative of the quadrature axis stator current of IPMSM. Moreover, URED is able to eliminate chattering without sacrificing robustness and precision. The proposed design detects... [more]

A Study on MG-PMSM for High Torque Density of 45 kW−Class Tram Driving System
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: driving system, high torque density, magnetic gear, permanent magnet synchronous motor, pole-piece, tram
This paper reports the design of a magnetic-geared permanent magnet synchronous motor (MG-PMSM) for a 45 kW tram traction system based on high torque density. In the case of the existing tram driving system, due to mechanical reduction gear and induction motor, it causes power transmission loss, low efficiency, and difficulty in lightweight. To solve this problem, research on the MG-PMSM, which combines a contactless magnetic gear with a high-power-density PMSM, is being actively conducted. This motor has a double rotor structure, and the inner rotor, including permanent magnet, and the outer rotor composed of pole-pieces rotate at different mechanical speeds. However, it is hard to design a tram driving system with a high torque density within limited conditions, because only one rotor in MG-PMSM is used as an output. In addition, there is no study conducted from basic design to final design, including gear ratio and topology selection in MG-PMSM for tram. Therefore, this paper presen... [more]

Design and Analysis of a High Torque Density Hybrid Permanent Magnet Excited Vernier Machine
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: cogging torque, hybrid permanent magnet excited, torque ripple, vernier machine
Permanent magnet (PM) excited vernier machines capable of high torque density have good potential for electric vehicles while requiring high rare earth PM consumption. To achieve a high torque density at a reasonable material cost, hybrid PM excited vernier machines incorporating both expensive rare earth and low-cost ferrite magnets are investigated in this paper. Various combinations of PM arrangements for the hybrid permanent magnet excited vernier machine are investigated to acquire low cost and superior torque density. The best solution obtained is that the PM on the stator adopts rare earth material while the rotor uses ferrite. Furthermore, the PMs on the stator are arranged in an iron-cored Halbach array, which can reduce leakage flux and enhance flux density effectively and the ferrite PMs are used in the rotor, therefore, high-temperature demagnetization is avoided. Then, the reluctance torque and the cogging torque can offset each other effectively, which is beneficial to re... [more]

Electromagnetic Interference in a Buried Multiconductor Cable Due to a Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer System
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: conducted emission (CE), dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT), e-mobility, electromagnetic interference (EMI), multiconductor transmission line (MTL), wireless power transfer (WPT)
The aim of this study is to predict the electromagnetic interference (EMI) effect produced by a dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) system on a buried multiconductor signal cable. The short-track DWPT system architecture is here considered with an operating frequency of 85 kHz and maximum power transferred to an EV equal to 10 kW. The EMI source is the DWPT transmitting coil which is activated when a vehicle passes over it. The electric and magnetic fields in the earth produced by the DWPT coil currents are calculated numerically using the finite elements method (FEM). These fields are then used to derive the voltage and current sources that appear in the field-excited multiconductor transmission line (MTL) model, used for the buried shielded cable. The MTL is analyzed considering the first ten harmonics of the current. The currents and voltages at the terminal ends are calculated considering the wireless charging of a single electric vehicle (EV) first, and then the simultaneous ch... [more]

Keywords: computation offloading, energy harvesting, fog computing, wireless power transfer, zero energy devices
Currently, we are faced with an ever-increasing number of devices and objects connected to the Internet aimed at creating the so-called Internet of Things framework, fostering the creation of a connected world of objects. One of the main challenges we are actually facing is constituted by the constrained sizes of such objects: reduced memory, reduced computational capacity, and reduced battery sizes. Particular attention should be devoted to energy efficiency, since a potential energy shortage would negatively impact not only its operation but also network-wide operation, considering the tight connections among any object. According to the 6G system’s use-case related to self-sustainability and zero-energy networks, this paper focuses on an energy-efficient fog network architecture for IoT scenarios, jointly implementing computation offloading operations and simultaneous wireless information and power Transfer (SWIPT), hence, enabling the possibility of jointly transferring energy and... Improvement of PMSM Sensorless Control Based on Synergetic and Sliding Mode Controllers Using a Reinforcement Learning Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient Agent
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: deep neural networks, permanent magnet synchronous motor, reinforcement learning, sliding mode control, synergetic control
The field-oriented control (FOC) strategy of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) in a simplified form is based on PI-type controllers. In addition to their low complexity (an advantage for real-time implementation), these controllers also provide limited performance due to the nonlinear character of the description equations of the PMSM model under the usual conditions of a relatively wide variation in the load torque and the high dynamics of the PMSM speed reference. Moreover, a number of significant improvements in the performance of PMSM control systems, also based on the FOC control strategy, are obtained if the controller of the speed control loop uses sliding mode control (SMC), and if the controllers for the inner control loops of id and iq currents are of the synergetic type. Furthermore, using such a control structure, very good performance of the PMSM control system is also obtained under conditions of parametric uncertainties and significant variations in the combine... An Novel Six-Segment Modulation Strategy for Three-Phase Isolated PFC Converter
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: current ripple, energy conversion system, space vector modulation, three-phase isolated rectifier
A three-phase isolated rectifier features bidirectional power conversion and galvanic isolation, and is attractive as a high-efficiency energy conversion system. However, when a conventional modulation is applied to this rectifier, the excessive DC-link current ripple will result in increasing switching losses or the size of DC-link inductance, which is not cost-effective. In order to effectively reduce the current ripple, this paper proposes a “six segment” PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) strategy. It can significantly reduce the current ripple compared with the existing “eight segment” PWM strategy. Meanwhile, the current quality of the grid is improved. Finally, the experimental tests were carried out. The experimental results reveal that, compared to the traditional “eight segment” PWM, the dc-side current ripple significantly reduced from 2 A to 0.8 A, the total harmonic distortion significantly reduced from 5.69% to 2.41%, and the power factor increased from 0.87 to 0.99, verifying... Measurements and Analysis of Partial Discharges at HVDC Voltage with AC Components
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: combined test voltage, HVDC insulation, partial discharges
This paper presents the methodology for phase-resolved partial discharge measurements in HVDC systems with a DC voltage containing trace AC harmonics or a DC voltage ripple. The measurement result of partial discharges is an indicator of the current condition of the high-voltage power devices’ insulation system. The voltage waveforms in HVDC systems are not ideal DC, because different disturbances occurring naturally in these systems can affect the DC voltage. The AC harmonics related to the AC source voltage, and the voltage ripples provided by the power converter topology, can be found in the HVDC voltage. This paper proposes a novel approach to partial discharge measurement in DC networks. The synchronization to the particular AC harmonics appearing in DC voltage was applied to the PD measurements. The analyses were performed on the model sample containing a void inclusion, which was placed between electrodes fed by the DC voltages with the imposed chosen AC harmonics. Two scenarios... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: asymmetric collapse, high spatiotemporal imaging, laser-induced bubble, liquid microjet, shadowgraph imaging, toroidal bubble
The collapse of a cavitation bubble is always associated with the radiation of intense shock waves, which are highly relevant in a variety of applications. To radiate a strong shock wave, it is necessary to converge energy at the collapse, and understanding generation processes of multiple shock waves at the collapse is a key issue. In the present study, we investigated the formation of multiple shock waves generated by the collapse of a laser-induced bubble. We used a high-speed imaging system with unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution. We developed a triggering procedure of high precision and reproducibility based on the deflection of a laser beam by the shockwave passage. The high-speed videos clearly show that: (A) a first shockwave is emitted as the micro-jet hits the bottom of the bubble interface, followed by a second shock wave due to the collapse of the remaining toroidal bubble; (B) a sequential collapse of elongated bubbles, where the top part of the bubble collapses sligh... Development of Equivalent Circuit Models of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors Considering Core Loss
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: core loss, equivalent circuit model, permanent magnet synchronous motors
Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) possesses the advantages of low power loss, high power density and high torque density and, hence, has achieved broad applications in both industrial drives and home appliances. With the increasing demands for high power density, the PMSM often operates at high speed and high frequency, leading to high power loss and temperature rise. Consequently, proper consideration of power loss, including the core loss, has attracted much attention for the modelling, designing, controlling and optimizing of PMSMs. However, the widely used equivalent circuit model, capable of providing good analysis results with fast calculation, often ignores the core loss, which may lead to unsatisfactory motor performance. This paper aims to investigate the development of equivalent circuit models, with predictable core loss for PMSMs, and proposes novel equivalent circuit models, which improve the core loss prediction accuracy in the load conditions. Effect of Stator Slots on Electromagnetic Performance of a High-Voltage Line-Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM), magnetic slot wedge, pull-in torque, starting process, starting torque, stator leakage reactance, stator slot
It is well known that the use of slotted stators in motors produces undesirable effects, such as magnetic flux distortion, additional losses, ripple torque, and vibration. However, a large number of studies pay more attention to stator slots and magnetic slot wedges (MSW) in asynchronous motors and permanent magnet motors, ignoring the same problems in large capacity high voltage line start permanent magnet synchronous motors (HVLSPMSM). In order to disclose the effect of the stator slot on HVLSPMSMs, the no-load air gap magnetic field distribution and stator leakage reactance are studied. Meanwhile, the differences in the starting torque, pull-in torque and pull-out torque of four slot models are compared, and the starting performance is more affected by stator slot. In practical manufacturing, the application of MSWs is the main way to change the electromagnetic performance of stator slots, so the influence of MSWs under different permeabilities on the performance of HVLSPMSMs is inv... High-Frequency Oscillation of the Active-Bridge-Transformer-Based DC/DC Converter
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: dual-active bridge (DAB), high-frequency oscillation (HFO), selected harmonic elimination (SHE)
The dual-active-bridge converter (DAB) has attracted tremendous attention in recent years. However, its EMI issues, especially the high-frequency oscillation (HFO) induced by the dv/dt and parasitic elements of the transformer, are significant challenges. The multi-active-bridge converter (MAB) based on the multi-winding transformer also faces similar problems, which are even more complicated. This article investigates the HFO of active-bridge-transformer-based DC/DC converters including DAB and MAB. Firstly, the general HFO model is studied using the analysis of the AC equivalent circuit considering the asymmetrical parameters. Ignoring the AC resistance in the circuit, the high-order model of the voltage oscillation could be reduced to a second-order system. Based on the simplified model, the oscillation voltage generated by an active bridge is analyzed in the time domain. Then, a universal active voltage-oscillation-suppression method-selected harmonic-elimination phase-shift (SHE P... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: bubble pulsation, gas jet, nozzle, underwater detonation
The subject of a gas jet generated by underwater detonation is an important issue in the field of underwater propulsion. The experimental system of underwater detonation is established, which utilizes a high-speed camera to record the morphological changes in bubbles and various pressure sensors to measure the flow field pressure. The effect of nozzles and the pressure of the flow field are analyzed thoroughly. The comparison of the bubble and field pressure shows that the shrinking nozzle increases the peak pressure of the transmitted shock wave generated by underwater detonation compared with that of the straight nozzle. Simultaneously, the water−air mixing phenomenon caused by the gas jet is enhanced. Under the influence of the reflected shock wave and the converging angle of the nozzle, the pulsation process of the bubble is inhibited enormously, which results in the bubble energy being substantially below that of the straight nozzle. The bubble pulsation period is 24.2 ms when the... [more]

Torque Enhancement Principle of Stator PM Vernier Machine by Consequent Pole Structure
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: consequent pole, stator PM, Vernier machine
In this study, a torque enhancement principle for a stator permanent-magnet (PM) Vernier machine with a consequent pole structure is proposed. The novelty of the manuscript is the explanation of how stator PM Vernier machines benefit from consequent pole structure. Although a similar concept of stator PM Vernier machines with a consequent pole structure has been investigated in previous studies, a clear torque enhancement principle was absent. The keys to torque enhancement are the decrement of nonworking harmonics and increment of working harmonics. To demonstrate these phenomena, the torque contributions from the harmonics were calculated. Subsequently, the performances of the conventional machine and consequent pole machine were compared to verify the enhancement principle. The electromagnetic performances, including the back electromotive force and torque, were compared. The results show that the stator PM Vernier machine benefits significantly from torque enhancement using the con... [more]

Keywords: cogging torque, finite element analysis (FEA), harmonic order analysis, internal permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), manufacturing disturbances, tolerance
This paper is a study of unintended cogging torque for the IPMSM (Internal Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) of an EPS (Electric Power Steering) system considering manufacturing disturbances. The IPMSM has been used recently in EPS systems with high power density. However, due to the complex rotor shape of the IPMSM, considering manufacturing disturbances, it is expected to reduce the quality of IPMSM performance. Therefore, the unintended cogging torque for motor quality is also expected to increase. This paper analyzes the causes of unintended cogging torque in the IPMSM of an EPS system considering manufacturing disturbances. Based on the harmonic order analysis of measured cogging torque for the IPMSM prototypes, the causes of unintended cogging torque in the IPMSM are verified due to the manufacturing disturbances.

The Gallium Nitride high electron mobility transistor (GaN HEMT) has been considered as a potential power semiconductor device for high switching speed and high power density application since its commercialization. Compared with the traditional Si transistors, GaN HEMT has faster switching speed and lower on-off loss. As a result, it is more sensitive to the nonlinear parameters due to the fast switching speed. The subsequent voltage and current overshooting will affect the efficiency and safety of the GaN HEMT and power electronic systems. In this study, the conductivity and permittivity of electrical pressboard—insulating liquid—water composites were investigated, and the electrical properties of the composites and water were analysed comparatively. Mineral oil and synthetic ester were used as insulating liquids. It was found that the presence of water caused an increase in the permeability of the composite in the frequency range below 100 Hz. The value of static permittivity determined by water in the content of 5 wt. % was approximately 15. To obtain this value caused by liquid water, its volume should be approximately five (oil) and four times (ester) higher than its actual content, respectively. Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, free moving particle, gaseous breakdown, gaseous insulation, high-speed imaging, SF6
This study deals with gaseous insulation contaminated by free moving particles. Two gases were investigated: SF6 (0.45 MPa) and a CO2/O2 gas mixture (0.75 MPa). Video recordings were used to track a free particle moving between a plate and a Rogowski electrode for validation of a 1D particle motion model. The effect of fixed and free particles (4 or 8 mm, Ø 0.9 mm) on the breakdown voltage and the mean time between breakdowns was determined in a concentric set of electrodes. The value of the breakdown voltage for a free particle was between those of a particle fixed to the enclosure and the central electrode. The particle motion in the concentric case could not be observed in the experimental set-up and was therefore simulated using a 1D model. For the 4 mm free particle, the breakdown seemed to be initiated in the inter-electrode gap in CO2 and at the crossing in SF6, while for the 8 mm particle, breakdown occurred at lift-off in both gases.
