Even when the maximum stress is less than the peak stress under conventional loading, fatigue failure of rock is likely to occur, thereby showing its unique characteristics. The present study summarized the factors affecting rock fatigue life from the perspective of phenomenology and studied the fatigue damage process of rock from the microscopic perspective. However, the meso-mechanical mechanism of fatigue−tension failure of rocks is still not very clear, and there are few studies on rock fatigue life that use meso-crack propagation models. Specific parameters of cake filtration, such as the filter cake and filter medium resistances, can be determined using the pressurized housing cell standardized in the guideline VDI 2762 by measuring the filtrate mass on a laboratory scale. For reproducible measurements and an exact detection of the filtration start, an improved test setup is presented and compared with a standard setup according to the guideline VDI 2762. On the basis of measurements without and with a particle system to be filtered, it is shown that the characteristic nonlinear course at the beginning of each filtration, which can be seen in the t/V-V diagram, is influenced by the used measuring equipment.

Estimation of 137Cs Distribution and Recovery Using Various Types of Sorbents in the Black Sea Surface Layer

Monitoring 137Cs in seawater is necessary for the timely detection of radioactive contamination. The possibility of sorption and the sorption efficiency of 137Cs from seawater were studied for the first time during several cruises of the R/V (research vessel) Professor Vodyanitsky using various types of sorbents based on transition metal ferrocyanides (Anfezh, Niket, Uniket, FSS, FD-M, FIC, Termoxid 35, NKF-C) and zirconium phosphate (Termoxid 3A). The influence of the seawater flow rate and volume of the sorbent used for the recovery of 137Cs was estimated. The ferrocyanide sorbents Niket, Uniket, Termoxid 35, and FIC showed the best sorption efficiency (60−100%) at a seawater flow rate of 2−4 column volumes per minute. The data obtained during three cruises on the R/V Professor Vodyanitsky were analyzed. Why Should We Test the Wideband Transformation Accuracy of Inductive Current Transformers?

Inductive current transformers are characterized by different transformation accuracies for higher harmonics of distorted primary currents. Therefore, it is highly required to perform the tests of their metrological properties to choose the best unit that ensures the lowest values of current error and phase displacement. This study presents a comparison of two manufactured inductive current transformers. The results indicate that some inductive current transformers may be used to accurately transform distorted currents, enabling proper distortion of power metering and quality evaluation. The paper presents investigations and analysis of the parameters of the magnetic part of the equivalent circuit of the inductive CT in the frequencies range from 50 Hz to 5 kHz. Therefore, a measuring circuit used to determine the values of the transverse branch elements was developed. The research performed helps to understand the obtained values of the frequency characteristics of the current error and phase displacement of the corrected inductive current transformer. Moreover, the vectorial diagrams for the 1st, 20th and 100th harmonics are provided with consideration of the influence of the applied turns number correction of the secondary winding. Channel wing is a propeller-coupling layout that has good low-speed performance and S/VTOL potential. Analysis of Wide-Frequency Dense Signals Based on Fast Minimization Algorithm

To improve the detection speed for wide-frequency dense signals (WFDSs), a fast minimization algorithm (FMA) was proposed in this study. Firstly, this study modeled the WFDSs and performed a Taylor-series expansion of the sampled model. Secondly, we simplified the sampling model based on the augmented Lagrange multiplier (ALM) method and then calculated the augmented Lagrange function of the sampling model. Finally, according to the alternating minimization strategy, the Lagrange multiplier vector and the sparse block phasor in the function were iterated individually to realize the measurement of the original signal components. The results show that the algorithm improved the analysis accuracy of the WFDS by 35% to 46% on the IEEE C37.118.1a-2014 standard for the wide-frequency noise test, harmonic modulation test, and step-change test, providing a theoretical basis for the development of the P-class phasor measurement unit (PMU).

The rigid catenary system is widely used in tunnels to power electric trains via contact with a pantograph. Due to gravity, the contact wire normally has a sag that may affect the dynamic interaction performance with a pantograph. The recovery of oil from a reservoir can be accomplished with various methods, one of the most commonly applied types being waterflooding. A common theory used to describe immiscible displacement is the Buckley−Leverett theory. A brand new type of micromodel, generated and fabricated by using a micro-computer tomography (μCT) image stack of a real sandstone core, was used to conduct immiscible displacement experiments. Critical logging data were recorded, and a high-resolution camera took pictures of the displacement process. The surface morphology of fractures formed by hydraulic fracturing is usually rough. The roughness of the fracture surface is the main reason the actual fracture conductivity deviates from the ideal flat plate model result. In this paper, based on the three-dimensional reconfiguration of actual rough hydraulic fractures, a randomly generated geometric model of a micro-convex body with a rough fracture surface is used as an example of a hydraulic fracture in a shale reservoir. Assuming that the flow in the fracture conforms to the laminar flow pattern, the velocity and pressure fields of the fluid flow on the fracture surface are solved by the finite element method. Time-Dependent Viscous Flow Behavior of a Hydrophobic Fumed Silica Suspension

The viscous flow behavior of a 12.5 vol% hydrophobic fumed silica (Aerosil® R816) suspension in polypropylene glycol of low molecular weight (PPG400) was studied in a stress-controlled rheometer. The steady flow curve showed shear thickening between two shear thinning regions. Time-dependent viscosity response provoked by step changes in shear stresses corresponding to the shear-thickening region apparently agrees with thixotropic behavior just after the very initial stages are surpassed. Almost instantaneous jamming can justify misinterpretation of the results.

Acoustic Emission Multi-Parameter Analysis of Dry and Saturated Sandstone with Cracks under Uniaxial Compression

In order to study the mechanics and acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of fractured rock under water-rock interaction, dried and saturated sandstone samples with prefabricated double parallel cracks were prepared. Then, uniaxial compression experiments were performed to obtain their AE signals and crack propagation images. The results show that water reduces the strength and fracture toughness of fractured sandstone and enhances plasticity. After saturation, the samples start to crack earlier; the cracks grow slowly; the failure mode is transformed from shear failure along the prefabricated cracks to combined shear and tensile failure; more secondary cracks are produced. The saturated samples release less elastic energy and weaker AE signals in the whole failure process.
