Subject: Other
Keywords: Bunsen burner, carbonization speed, partition board, pool fire, surface temperature
Fire safety of ancient wooden buildings is one of the most important issues in the world. In this paper, partition boards with different thicknesses from 15 to 25 mm were heated by a 15-cm-diameter pool fire and a methane Bunsen burner. The temperatures and the carbonization rate of partition boards were measured and analyzed. The results show that when a pool fire was used to heat the wood sample at a distance of 30 cm, two flames appear on the sample surface. When a Bunsen burner heats the sample, the sample is burned until the center point is burned through. The thickness of the sample is increased by 5 mm, and the acceleration time of the temperature rise rate at the center is doubled. Under the condition of a pool fire, the thickness of the sample is increased by 5 mm, and the average carbonization rate at the center point is reduced by 40%. Under the condition of Bunsen burner, the average carbonization rate of the center point decreases exponentially when the thickness of the sa... [more]

Keywords: electric discharge in water, gas density oscillation, gas filament
When a streamer discharge occurs in water, several luminous plasma filaments will be created in the water during the discharge. After the discharge, these plasma filaments turn into neutral gas phase and remain in water. The gas filament remained in water is a good object for studying the basic processes involved in the streamer propagation. We investigated the evolution of the gas filaments remained in water after a streamer discharge at different experimental conditions. We recorded eight successive images during one discharge pulse. The density of gas in the gas filament and the radius of the gas filament were measured from the obtained images. We found that the radius of the gas filament and the density of gas in the gas filament are almost not influenced by the impulse voltage within the range studied. While the conductivity of water has strong effect on the radius of the gas filament and the density of gas in the gas filament. The radius of the gas filament becomes thicker and ex... [more]

Keywords: airflow velocity, asymmetrical electrodes, high voltage, particle image velocimetry, tracer particles
While examining the airflow generated between the asymmetrical electrodes connected to high voltage, the authors investigated the possible limitations of the particle image velocimetry (PIV) method in the presence of strong electric fields. The tracer particles used in the PIV method in these conditions are affected by electromagnetic forces; therefore, it is necessary to determine whether these forces have any non-negligible negative influence on the measurement results. For this purpose, the authors theoretically analyzed all the possible forces and measured the generated airflow using PIV and constant temperature anemometry methods. The experimental and theoretical results clearly show the viability of the PIV measurement method even in these very specific conditions.

Keywords: carbohydrate chemistry, cryopreservation, ice recrystallization
-aryl-β-d-glucosides and N-alkyl-d-gluconamides are two classes of effective ice recrystallization inhibitors (IRIs), however their solubilities limit their use in cryopreservation applications. Herein, we have synthesized and assessed phosphonate analogues of small-molecule IRIs as a method to improve their chemical and physical properties. Four sodium phosphonate compounds 4−7 were synthesized and exhibited high solubilities greater than 200 mM. Their IRI activity was evaluated using the splat cooling assay and only the sodium phosphonate derivatives of α-methyl-d-glucoside (5-Na) and N-octyl-d-gluconamide (7-Na) exhibited an IC50 value less than 30 mM. It was found that the addition of a polar sodium phosphonate group to the alkyl gluconamide (1) and aryl glucoside (2) structure decreased its IRI activity, indicating the importance of a delicate hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance within these compounds. The evaluation of various cation-phosphonate pairs was studied and revealed the IRI... [more]

In wireless charging devices, a transmitter that applies a single inverter to output dual-frequency can effectively solve the charging incompatibility problem caused by different wireless charging standards and reduce the equipment volume. However, it is very difficult to solve the switching angle of the modulated dual-frequency waveform, which involves non-linear high-dimensional multi-objective optimization with multiple constraints. In this paper, an improved differential evolution (DE) algorithm is proposed to solve the transcendental equations of switching angle trains of dual-frequency programmed harmonic modulation (PHM) waveform. The proposed algorithm maintains diversity while preserving the elites and improves the convergence speed of the solution. The advantage of the proposed algorithm was verified by comparing with non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA II) and multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO). The simulation and experimental results validate t... [more]

Keywords: generalized zero vector, multi-level converter, space vector modulation, two-level hexagon
Multi-level converters are widely used in various industrial applications. Among various space vector modulation (SVM) schemes, the multi-level SVM scheme based on two-level space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) is recognised as a simplified multi-level SVM scheme, which can reduce the computation complexity. However, this scheme is still complicated when the number of the voltage levels is large. This paper proposes a modified SVM scheme that can further simplify the multi-level SVM scheme based on two-level SVPWM. The proposed SVM scheme can directly determine the two-level hexagon where the reference voltage vector is located by calculating a simple formula. The whole modulation process can be completed by only three steps. Meanwhile, the proposed method is generic for any n-level converter without adding much calculation, which greatly simplifies the modulation process. Experimental results have been provided, which verify the effectiveness and generality of the proposed SVM... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: axial-flux permanent magnet motor, electric traction motor, motor performance, stator and rotor misalignment
Implementation of a new design for the process of assembling an axial-flux permanent magnet synchronous motor (AF PMSM) may lead to unstable motor parameters during operation at low and high speeds. In this paper, experimental data related to the AFPMSM used in an electric traction motor was monitored. The paper presents tracing of machine performance in order to find quality-related issues and to evaluate the assembly process. To assess the manual manufacturing process (low-volume production) and electrical machine performance, several motors, characterized by the same size and topology, were extensively tested. Useful AF PMSM parameters such as continuous torque and continuous current were measured. The winding temperature of the stators was also monitored and carefully examined. An attempt to assess motor performance, based on measurements and aimed at the identification of the weakest parts of the electric motor design is presented. In this paper it can be seen how the subcomponent... [more]

Keywords: electric field, heat flux method, laminar burning velocity, plasma assisted combustion, pulsed microwave
Laminar burning velocity of lean methane/air flames exposed to pulsed microwave irradiation is determined experimentally as part of an effort to accurately quantify the enhancement resulting from exposure of the flame to pulsed microwaves. The experimental setup consists of a heat flux burner mounted in a microwave cavity, where the microwave has an average power of up to 250 W at an E-field in the range of 350−380 kV/m. Laminar burning velocities for the investigated methane/air flames increase from 1.8 to 12.7% when exposed to microwaves. The magnitude of the enhancement is dependent on pulse sequence (duration and frequency) and the strength of the electric field. From the investigated pulse sequences, and at a constant E-field and average power, the largest effect on the flame is obtained for the longest pulse, namely 50 μs. The results presented in this work are, to the knowledge of the authors, the first direct determination of laminar burning velocity on a laminar stretch-free f... [more]

This present paper investigates the conversion of organic matter in carbonate rocks of the Semiluksko-Mendymsky horizon Volga-Ural Basin under hydrothermal conditions with excess water in subcritical conditions at 613−653 K and 170−200 Bar. It has been found that the content of hydrocarbon extracts increases (relatively) which indicates the oil-generating potential of the studied deposits. Besides, it has been shown that organic matter undergoes oxidation reactions under hydrothermal conditions, as indicated by the presence of oxidized structures in the extracted hydrocarbons. Moreover, our results indicate that increasing the temperature and pressure of the used hydrothermal fluid leads to an increase in the content of n-alkanes C25-C30 and asphaltenes in the extracts. On the other hand, it has been found that saturated, aromatic hydrocarbons and resins content decreases at this stage. The obtained data about the geochemical parameters dependencies of the hydrocarbons obtained from th... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicles, high frequency phase deviation (HFPD), interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), rotating high frequency (HF) signal injection, rotor position estimation
In the applications of rail transit and electric vehicles, sensorless control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) usually uses high frequency (HF) signal injection in low speed or zero speed. Rotating HF signal injection based on the stationary reference frame can identify the rotor position, but its accuracy is easily affected by various nonlinearities of the control system and stator resistance. In this paper, the causes of rotor position estimation deviation are analyzed and deduced in detail. It is proposed that the rotor position estimation deviation can be divided into high frequency phase deviation (HFPD) and stator resistance phase deviation. On the basis of these analyses, a novel sensorless rotor position estimation strategy for IPMSM is proposed. This strategy can theoretically eliminate the HF phase deviation caused by the nonlinearity of the control system and reduce the phase deviation caused by the stator resistance. Although the factors that cause the... [more]

In this paper, a flexible switching table (FST) for direct torque control (DTC) of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) was proposed to enhance the steady-state and dynamic performances of the drive system. First, the influence of each converter output voltage vectors on the torque and stator flux deviation rates was analyzed to assess the voltage selection strategies of the conventional STs and their impact on the DTC system’s performance. Then, a new flexible ST was proposed which uses a simple algorithm to adaptively select the appropriate voltage vector for two of its states according to the system operating condition. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed FST were verified through a comparative evaluation with the conventional STs using experimental results obtained from a 0.75 kW PMSM drive system.

Glazing plays a key role in the energy balance of buildings. The aim of this paper is to enlighten the thermal discomfort caused by large glazed areas in the heating season and to point out a possible solution that can provide proper thermal comfort with low energy use. It is unusual to discuss the negative effects of solar gains on thermal comfort during the heating season. However, there are cases when glazing may lead to unforeseen indoor thermal discomfort conditions. Laboratory and on site measurements were performed in order to assess thermal discomfort caused by direct and diffuse radiation. It was shown that the WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) index may exceed even 30 °C in the winter season in a room having large glazed area oriented to east. Laboratory tests performed in climate chamber have shown that the high PMV values cannot be reduced below 1.0, increasing the air change rate in the room. Using opaque drapes, the WBGT index was reduced by 2 °C, but the daylighting decr... [more]

Using the personal ventilation systems may improve the thermal comfort sensation. At the University of Debrecen, a personal ventilation system was developed named ALTAIR. This paper presents the results of mean air velocity, turbulence grade, and draught measurements related to newly developed air terminal devices which are connected to the ALTAIR personal ventilation system. In order to define the measurement points it was essential to test the new air terminal devices (ATDs) in front of a black wall and smoke puffs. A series of measurements were carried out with isothermal air flow, mean air velocity, turbulence grade, and draught around the occupant head region in order to improve the thermal comfort sensation. Five different ATDs were analyzed.

The article presents research on the electric arc generated by AC current at different frequencies. The measurement procedure and system are described. Optical spectra of the generated arc in the air were recorded using a spectrophotometer. Optical spectra for five frequencies were obtained. The article also presents the energy balance of the components of the registered spectrum. The visible changes in the spectra that depend on the frequency of the AC current generating the electric arc can be significant to the diagnostics of gas insulators. The research presented in the article can be used in multiple areas of technology where an electric arc is used. The influence of the frequency of the current supplying the electric arc on the electromagnetic radiation spectrum in the area of light radiation emitted by the electric arc allows for the construction of systems that can shape the desired characteristics of the electric arc.

Keywords: fin configuration, fin count, hydrophobicity, microchannel flow
In this study, heat and flow analysis of the cooling system incorporating fins with hydrophilic and hydrophobic wetting surfaces has been considered in relation to electronic cooling applications. Temperature and velocity fields in the solution domain are simulated for various fin numbers and sizes. A temperature parameter is introduced to assess the thermal performance of the system. Fin count is introduced to formulate the number of fins in the solution domain. The Nusselt number and pressure drop between the inlet and exit ports due to different fin configurations of the cooling system for various fin counts are presented. It is found that the temperature parameter attains high values for large sizes and small fin counts, which is more pronounced for low Reynolds numbers. Increasing number of fins results in almost uniform flow distribution among the fin, which is more pronounced for the hydrophobic fin configuration. The Nusselt number attains larger values for the hydrophilic fin... [more]
Determining the Position of the Brushless DC Motor Rotor

Keywords: BLDC motor, rotor position, sensor misalignment
In brushless direct current (or BLDC) motors with more than one pole pair, the status of standard shaft position sensors assumes the same distribution several times for its full mechanical rotation. As a result, a simple analysis of the signals reflecting their state does not allow any determination of the mechanical position of the shaft of such a machine. This paper presents a new method for determining the mechanical position of a BLDC motor rotor with a number of pole pairs greater than one. In contrast to the methods used so far, it allows us to determine the mechanical position using only the standard position sensors in which most BLDC motors are equipped. The paper describes a method of determining the mechanical position of the rotor by analyzing the distribution of errors resulting from the accuracy proposed by the BLDC motor’s Hall sensor system. Imprecise indications of the rotor position, resulting from the limited accuracy of the production process, offer a possibility of... [more]

In order to improve the Direct Current (DC) bus utilization ratio and realize harmonic suppression of a five-phase induction motor, the SVPWM (Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation) algorithm was researched in depth. Based on an analysis of the present SVPWM algorithm and the volt-second balance principle, a dynamic and adjustable new pattern four-vector SVPWM algorithm was proposed. The algorithm uses the modulation index and zero vector to improve the characteristics of the inductor motor, the function relationship with real-time dynamic ratio between the action−time ratio of the space voltage vector and the modulation index was proposed to maximize DC bus utilization ratio, and the random zero-vector dynamic modulation mode was used to reduce harmonic influence, being able to spread harmonics concentrated around certain frequencies across a wider frequency band and thus produce a more continuous and uniform power spectrum. The new algorithm model was built using Matlab/Simulink, and t... [more]

In this paper a comparison of the wideband power sources of a pulse width modulation (PWM) inverter and a power supply composed of an audio power amplifier and a two-channel arbitrary generator is discussed. Their application is to supply a step-up current transformer for generation of the distorted current required to test the transformation accuracy of the distorted currents of the inductive current transformers. The proposed equations allow to calculate the maximum rms values of higher harmonic of distorted currents for its required main harmonic component. Moreover, they also enable the calculation of the maximum rms values of the main harmonic of the distorted current for which the required higher harmonic component may be obtained. This defines the usable bandwidth of the tested power source for their specific load. During work on high inductive impedance, the maximum voltage is the limitation that determines the higher harmonic value. While for resistive loads, the maximum curre... [more]

Keywords: flux-weakening, generalized proportional integral observer, interior permanent magnet synchronous motor, nonlinear predictive control
This paper proposes a generalized proportional integral observer (GPIO) based nonlinear predictive control (NPC) for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) to improve the flux-weakening (FW) current control performance against the complex nonlinear cross-coupling terms and the IPMSM parameters’ variations. First, the IPMSM is remodeled to further analyze the FW control difficulties caused by such cross-coupling terms and parameters variations. Considering the parameters’ variations as a kind of disturbance, a GPIO is then designed to compensate for such disturbance. A GPIO-based NPC is finally designed to handle the nonlinear cross-coupling terms to obtain an optimized current control performance. Experiments on a digital signal processor (DSP) based IPMSM servo system validate the workability of the proposed control scheme.

Subject: Other
Keywords: folded spiral antenna, impedance matching, wireless power transfer
In this paper, a folded spiral resonator with a double-layered structure for near-field wireless power transfer is proposed. In near-field wireless power transfer, conjugate impedance matching is important to achieve high transfer efficiency. To achieve maximum available efficiency, it is common to connect a matching circuit to the antenna. However, the loss increases if a matching circuit is used. A coupling inductor with a resonant capacitor has the capability to adjust an imaginary part of the input impedance, whereas the folded spiral resonator has the capability to adjust both the imaginary and real parts of the input impedance. This resonator can achieve the maximum available efficiency without a matching circuit. This paper shows that the folded spiral resonator with a double-layered structure realizes high transfer efficiency compared to conventional models.

Subject: Other
Keywords: pulse width modulation, three-level inverters, transistor clamped inverter, Z-source inverters
In this paper, a three-level ZSI (impedance source inverter) based on transistor clamped theory is proposed. It uses the least number of switch counts and associated gate circuitry among all existing topologies of three-level ZSI without any performance degradation. The existing three-level ZSI topologies require three power switches to be turned ON for upper-lower shoot-through (ULST), and four power switches to be turned ON for full dc-link shoot-through (FST). However, with the proposed configuration, upper−lower shoot-through (ULST) and full dc-link shoot-through (FST) is inserted by turning ON only two power semiconductors. A comparison between diode clamped, transistor clamped, and t-type is presented. The proposed topology can realize any of the existing sine-triangle- or space vector-based PWM (pulse width modulation) schemes, and all existing configurations of three-level ZSI can merge into the proposed inverter configuration.

Keywords: controlling distributed generation, voltage regulation, voltage source inverter control, weak ac-connections
The integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in modern power systems has substantially changed the local control capabilities of the grid since the majority of DERs are connected through a controlled dc/ac inverter interface. Such long-distance located DER installations, usually represented by current regulated dc sources, can inject large amounts of power into the main ac grid at points where the strength of the ac connection is low. The efficient and stable performance of such a power scheme is related to the capability of the control applied to retain the power extraction close to the maximum and simultaneously to regulate the dc-side voltage as well as the ac-side voltage magnitude at the weak ac connection point. This is implemented by designing the controllers of the voltage source inverters (VSIs) in a manner that reliably satisfies the above tasks. To this end, decentralized cascaded control schemes, driven by novel, locally implemented phase locked loops (PLLs), suit... [more]

Compared to the plug-in charging system, Wireless power transfer (WPT) is simpler, reliable, and user-friendly. Resonant inductive coupling based WPT is the technology that promises to replace the plug-in charging system. It is desired that the WPT system should provide regulated current and power with high efficiency. Due to the instability in the connected load, the system output current, power, and efficiency vary. To solve this issue, a buck converter is implemented on the secondary side of the WPT system, which adjusts its internal resistance by altering its duty cycle. To control the duty cycle of the buck converter, a discrete fast terminal sliding mode controller is proposed to regulate the system output current and power with optimal efficiency. The proposed WPT system uses the LCC-S compensation topology to ensure a constant output voltage at the input of the buck converter. The LCC-S topology is analyzed using the two-port network theory, and governing equations are derived... [more]

Many studies have been conducted to reduce the cogging torque of electric power steering motors. However, in the mass production of such motors, it is essential to enhance performance robustness in relation to tolerances. For such motors, this work analyzes performance robustness in relation to tolerances by applying a cycloid curve to the surface magnet of the rotor. Applying a cycloid curve to the magnet surface of the rotor is one of several ways to reduce cogging torque. To evaluate the performance of the cycloid curve, we compare it with an eccentric curve. The two curves are compared for the same specifications and evaluated using the indicator, tolerance insensitivity rate, which is used to assess performance robustness in relation to tolerances. The cycloid curve was evaluated to be more robust in relation to tolerances, as compared with the eccentric curve. Finally, an experiment was conducted to validate the robustness of the cycloid curve.
