Yukun Xu, Xiangyong Kong, Zheng Zhu, Chao Jiang, Shuang Xiao
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: collaborative, data recovery, latent semantic, matrix factorization, nearest neighbor, power metering
Electric energy metering plays a crucial role in ensuring fair and equitable transactions between grid companies and power users. With the implementation of the State Grid Corporation’s energy Internet strategy, higher requirements have been put forward for power grid companies to reduce costs and increase efficiency and user service capabilities. Meanwhile, the accuracy and real-time requirements for electric energy measurements have also increased. Electricity information collection systems are mainly used to collect the user-side energy metering data for the power users. Attributed to communication errors, communication delays, equipment failures and other reasons, some of the collected data is missed or confused, which seriously affects the refined management and service quality of power grid companies. How to deal with such data has been one of the important issues in the fields of machine learning and data mining. This paper proposes a collaborative fitting algorithm to solve the... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: high-fidelity, MTR, plate-fuel, RIA, Serpent2/Subchanflow, subchannel
In order to join efforts to develop high-fidelity multi-physics tools for research reactor analysis, the KIT is conducting studies to modify the coupled multi-physics codes developed for power reactors. The coupled system uses the Monte Carlo Serpent 2 code for neutron analysis and the Subchanflow code for thermo-hydraulic analysis. Serpent treats temperature dependence using the target motion sampling method and Subchanflow was previously extended and validated with experimental data for plate-type reactor analysis. This work present for the first time the steady-state and transient neutron and thermo-hydraulic analysis of an MTR core defined in the IAEA 10 MW benchmark using Serpent2/Subchanflow. Important global and local parameters for nominal steady-state conditions were obtained, e.g., the lowest and highest core plate/channel power/temperature, the radial and axial core power profile at the plate level, and the core coolant temperature distribution at the subchannel level. The c... [more]
Electric Field Effects on Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting: Perspectives and Outlook
Stephanie J. Boyd, Run Long, Niall J. English
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric fields, Hydrogen, molecular simulation, photoelectrochemical water splitting
The grand challenges in renewable energy lie in our ability to comprehend efficient energy conversion systems, together with dealing with the problem of intermittency via scalable energy storage systems. Relatively little progress has been made on this at grid scale and two overriding challenges still need to be addressed: (i) limiting damage to the environment and (ii) the question of environmentally friendly energy conversion. The present review focuses on a novel route for producing hydrogen, the ultimate clean fuel, from the Sun, and renewable energy source. Hydrogen can be produced by light-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, but it is very inefficient; rather, we focus here on how electric fields can be applied to metal oxide/water systems in tailoring the interplay with their intrinsic electric fields, and in how this can alter and boost PEC activity, drawing both on experiment and non-equilibrium molecular simulation.

Keywords: centrifugal turbine, CFD models, dimensionless coefficients, experimental tests, optimal location, water distribution network
Water distribution networks need to improve system efficiency. Hydropower is a clean and renewable energy that has been among the key solutions to environmental issues for many decades. As the turbine is the core of hydropower plants, high attention is paid to creating new design solutions and increasing the performance of turbines in order to enhance energy efficiency of leakage by pressure control. Hence, design and performance analysis of a new turbine is a crucial aspect for addressing the efficiency of its application. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is coupled with experimental tests in order to investigate the optimal performance of a new centrifugal turbine. The behavior of the flow through the turbine runner is assessed by means of velocity profiles and pressure contours at all components of the machine under different operating conditions. Finally, the turbine geometry is scaled to a real water distribution network and an optimization procedure is p... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy cost, mass transfer, probability density function, removal efficiency, venturi, volume of fluid
Industrial applications need to use different systems for the problem of gas cleaning. A lot of processes have been developed, such as the use of a venturi for gas cleaning and pollution reduction. Additionally, several studies have been developed especially in terms of pressure drop because it is one of the main parameters to determine its efficiency. While the phenomenon of mass transfer in a venturi scrubber has not found much attention, in the present study, a mass transfer two-dimensional simulation is developed for gasification gas cleaning through a venturi scrubber with boundary conditions represented in air inlet velocities of 10, 15, and 20 m/s and water inlet mass flow of 0.02, 0.04 and 0.06 kg/s. In this work, Navier−Stokes equations are solved numerically and the mass transfer technique is treated by the volume of fluid (VOF) model, using CFD software. The obtained results were analyzed by presenting the mass fraction, velocity and pressure contours, and profiles. The prob... [more]

Sorin-Ioan Lupa, Martin Gagnon, Sebastian Muntean, Georges Abdul-Nour
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydraulic passage, hydropower units, load rejection, transients, water hammer
Water hammer influences the life cycle of hydraulic passages and may even cause catastrophic structural failures. Several catastrophic failures of hydraulic power units have been reported in the literature due to the effects of transient regimes. The objective of the study is to highlight the global trend in water hammer assessment and to quantify the effect of factors influencing overpressure in hydraulic passages during load rejection in different hydropower plants. A brief and concise literature review is conducted to document the parameters associated with the water hammer phenomenon and to thereby identify the necessary prerequisites to validate theoretical and numerical results against experimental data. The purpose of the analysis is to identify extreme transient loads on hydraulic passages in order to properly adapt hydropower unit operation, to make recommendations for design and industry, and to guide the progress of adapted models and numerical simulations to capture complex... The Impact of Detail, Shadowing and Thermal Zoning Levels on Urban Building Energy Modelling (UBEM) on a District Scale
Xavier Faure, Tim Johansson, Oleksii Pasichnyi
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: level of detail, LOD, shadowing, thermal zoning, UBEM, urban building energy model
New modelling tools are required to accelerate the decarbonisation of the building sector. Urban building energy modelling (UBEM) has recently emerged as an attractive paradigm for analysing building energy performance at district and urban scales. The balance between the fidelity and accuracy of created UBEMs is known to be the cornerstone of the model’s applicability. This study aimed to analyse the impact of traditionally implicit modeller choices that can greatly affect the overall UBEM performance, namely, (1) the level of detail (LoD) of the buildings’ geometry; (2) thermal zoning; and (3) the surrounding shadowing environment. The analysis was conducted for two urban areas in Stockholm (Sweden) using MUBES—the newly developed UBEM. It is a bottom-up physics-based open-source tool based on Python and EnergyPlus, allowing for calibration and co-simulation. At the building scale, significant impact was detected for all three factors. At the district scale, smaller effects (<2%)... [more]
A Novel Compensation Circuit for Capacitive Power Transfer System to Realize Desired Constant Current and Constant Voltage Output
Bo Dong, Yang Chen, Jing Lian, Xiaohui Qu
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacitive power transfer, compensation circuit, constant output
Capacitive power transfer (CPT) technique possesses the advantages of safety, isolation, low cost, and insensitivity to conductive barriers. To charge lithium-ion batteries, CPT should possess the output profile consisting of first constant current (CC) output and later constant voltage (CV) output. To fulfill the output profile, many power switches or compensation components are added in the CPT circuit, which is not expected due to the bulky size and additional losses. To reduce the redundancy of the CPT system, an Lx-PS CPT circuit with only five compensation components is proposed in this paper. After a systematic analysis and a parameter design procedure, the proposed CPT circuit can realize input ZPA at both CC and CV modes. In addition, the output current at CC mode and the output voltage at CV mode are all adjustable based on the charging demands of different loads. Finally, simulations are done to prove the analysis in this paper. Compared to previous research, the CPT circuit... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CROCUS, GeN-Foam, neutron transport, SP3, unstructured mesh
This paper summarizes a methodology developed at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne for the neutronic modeling of the CROCUS experimental reactor and proposes solutions to the challenges one may face while modeling a research reactor with a complex geometry. Indeed, the double-lattice configuration of CROCUS makes it difficult to use codes for neutron diffusion and transport relying on a structured mesh description. For this reason, and based on the available in-house competences, we decided to make use of the neutronic capabilities of the GeN-Foam multiphysics solver, which takes advantage of general finite volume methodologies on unstructured meshes to provide sufficient flexibility for the study of unconventional reactor designs. In this work, GeN-Foam is used to build a first SP3 model of CROCUS based on an unstructured mesh to have an explicit modeling of the double lattice and the water gap between the two lattices. Form functions are then used to reconstruct the intra-pin... [more]

Keywords: deep learning, long short-term memory, Wave Energy, wind energy
Wind energy and wave energy are considered to have enormous potential as renewable energy sources in the energy system to make great contributions in transitioning from fossil fuel to renewable energy. However, the uncertain, erratic, and complicated scenarios, as well as the tremendous amount of information and corresponding parameters, associated with wind and wave energy harvesting are difficult to handle. In the field of big data handing and mining, artificial intelligence plays a critical and efficient role in energy system transition, harvesting and related applications. The derivative method of deep learning and its surrounding prolongation structures are expanding more maturely in many fields of applications in the last decade. Even though both wind and wave energy have the characteristics of instability, more and more applications have implemented using these two renewable energy sources with the support of deep learning methods. As energy efficiency is becoming a subject of utter importance in today’s societies, the European Union and a vast number of organizations have put a lot of focus on it. As a result, huge amounts of data are generated at an unprecedented rate. After thorough analysis and exploration, these data could provide a variety of solutions and optimizations regarding the energy efficiency subject. However, all the potential solutions that could derive from the aforementioned procedures still remain untapped due to the fact that these data are yet fragmented and highly sophisticated. In this paper, we propose an architecture for a Reasoning Engine, a mechanism that provides intelligent querying, insights and search capabilities, by leveraging technologies that will be described below. The proposed architecture has been developed in the context of the H2020 project called MATRYCS. In this paper, the reasons that resulted from the need of efficient ways of querying and analyzing the large amounts... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AeroCity, aerodynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, ground effect, WIG
The AeroCity is a new form of transportation concept that has been developed to provide high-speed ground transportation at a much lower cost than the existing high-speed railway. Utilizing the Wing-in-Ground (WIG) effect, the AeroCity vehicle does not require complex infrastructures like other contemporary concepts, such as the Hyperloop or Maglev trains. In the current work, the aerodynamic characteristics of the AeroCity vehicle are examined through a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. The results from the CFD analysis qualitatively match with the findings of wind tunnel experiments. Surface streamlines and boundary layer measurements correspond well with the numerical data. However, the force measurements show a discrepancy. It is found that the separation bubble over the side plates is not captured by the CFD, and this is responsible for an under-prediction of the drag at higher free-stream velocities. The Transition SST model improved the matching between the experiment... [more]

Keywords: biomass gasification, Computational Fluid Dynamics, conjugate heat transfer, performance degradation, shell-and-tube heat exchanger, tar deposition
Biomass represents a programmable renewable energy source that is useful for reducing issues related to the transfer from fossil fuels to the renewable energy era. The exploitation of biomass is strongly related to the development of power technologies that are designed to improve efficiency; however, at the same time, they have to be designed to improve the life cycle of the entire installation—especially in relation to maintenance operations. In this paper, a numerical analysis is proposed to assess the performance of a heat exchanger used for separating condensing tar from syngas generated by the gasification of lignocellulosic wood chips and pellets. The analysis included clean, fouled, and clogged conditions. Flow maldistribution characterized the inlet section of shell-and-tube configurations and was responsible for clogging phenomena. Starting from field detection, analyses of fouled and clogged conditions showed a reduction in the effectiveness of the heat exchanger, causing da... [more]
Modelling the Exergy of Solar Radiation: A Review

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diluted solar radiation, Exergy, exergy analysis, solar radiation
Exergy is a thermodynamic property that represents the quantification of the maximum useful work that can be extracted from a system interacting with the environment. Regarding solar radiation, radiative exergy has been a matter of study over the last 60 years where the main models applied describe the radiation as undiluted and diluted. The exergy of solar radiation is useful in the preliminary assessment of the performance of solar technologies, since the efficiency of the system depends directly on this value. The present paper describes a review of the main models reported in the literature considering these two approaches, analysing the main differences between the models and the main assumptions applied. A comparative analysis is carried out for the models of diluted and undiluted radiation, where the behaviour of every expression is discussed in detail. For the undiluted expressions, the behaviour of every model within a temperature range is analysed. For black-body radiation at... [more]

Youkai Jiang, Yaheng Zhang, Jie Zhang, Zhiyong Tang
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD simulation, gas–liquid slug flow, honeycomb microreactor, micro-PIV
The gas−liquid slug flow characteristics in a novel honeycomb microchannel reactor were investigated numerically and experimentally. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was carried out with Comsol finite element software using the phase-field method, and the simulation results were verified by micro-particle image velocimetry (micro-PIV) analysis. The breakups of liquid slugs at the bifurcations of current honeycomb microchannel followed a complex behavior, leading to non-uniformity in each branch. The pressure distribution inside the microreactor was closely related to the phase distribution. The increasing inlet gas velocity increased the gas phase volume fraction, as well as the gas slug length. Higher gas velocity resulted in stronger turbulence of the liquid phase flow field and a deviation of residence time distribution from normal distribution, but it was favorable to even more residence time during the liquid phase. There also exists a secondary flow in the gas−liquid i... [more]

Keywords: back-flashover, DC towers, HVDC transmission, lightning overvoltages, lightning strikes, shielding failure, transient analysis
High-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission systems are considered an outstanding solution due to high electrical losses emerging from long-distance transmission. However, HVDC transmission lines (TLs) are vulnerable to lightning strikes. In this work, the Yunnan-Guizhou 500 kV HVDC transmission system is used as a case study to evaluate the impact of lightning strikes on DC-TL overvoltages, as no research studies have been conducted to assess the lightning transient behavior of DC-TLs. A comprehensive investigation of the 500 kV DC-TL transient performance during lightning strikes is performed, taking into account different technical aspects that have not been studied in detail by previous researchers. Additionally, analysis of the back-flashover phenomenon has not been conducted well in previous work, and results on the effect of changing the lightning strike current peak and tower grounding resistance on shielding-failure flashover are quite limited. The distributed-parameter mo... [more]

Keywords: deflector optimization, numerical simulation, optimizing design, selective catalytic reduction, zonal ammonia spraying
Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and denitrification are the best technologies for nitrogen oxides (NOx) control in coal-fired power plants, and their denitration efficiency and ammonia escape rate are closely related to their internal flow characteristics. By adding a deflector to the SCR device, the flow field in the curve can be effectively improved, and the stable and efficient operation of the SCR device can be realized. Based on the numerical simulation method, the SCR system of a coking coal-fired boiler in a steel plant was simulated using k-ε (the turbulence model), and three design schemes of deflectors were proposed and numerically simulated simultaneously. After optimization, the ammonia injection grid’s downstream velocity variance coefficient CV was 6.69, the catalyst upper cross-section velocity variance coefficient was 11.84, the cross-sectional temperature average was 499 K, the maximum temperature deviation was 9 °C, the maximum-to-minimum temperature interval span... The paper presents the results of analytical and experimental studies of the hydrodynamics of the translational−rotational motion of incompressible gas flow within a working space of a variable-geometry vortex heat generator. The terminal velocity and pressure have been identified analytically. The effect of vortex generation on the ratio of the parameters has been analyzed. A mathematical model has been developed with a simplified design scheme that simulates the movement inside a vortex channel with fixed elements. On the basis of mathematical modelling, the influence of the apparatus-constructive (AC) design of the working space of a vortex heat generator on the generation of vortices inside the apparatus has been analyzed. The influence of the main geometric and hydrodynamic parameters of the device on the indicators of its energy efficiency has been investigated. The obtained models show the critical regions where the most intense cavitation zones are possible. An analysis of the... [more]

This article presents the possibility of evaluating the efficiency of the heat exchange element with a special stamping plate, which is based on the results of computer simulation. The method is based on a comparative analysis of convective heat transfer models implemented in ANSYS using a k-ε turbulence model. To conduct the study, 3D models of three different types of cavity geometry formed between two heat exchange plates (flat plate, chevron plate, and plate with conical stampings) were built. Simulation was performed by finite element analysis in ANSYS for channels formed by the three types of plates, one of which is a new configuration. The results of hydrodynamic and heat exchange parameters allowed for establishing the efficiency of convective heat exchange for plates of known structures and to compare them with the proposed one. It was found that the plates with conical stamping form the smallest channels through which the fluid moves. The velocity of the coolant is uniform th... [more]

Keywords: battery thermal management, digital twin, Gaussian process regression, microchannel structure
In order to avoid high-temperature and large rate discharge impact on the performance of battery modules, a microchannel liquid cooling battery thermal management system (BTMS) and BTMS virtual model of the microchannel structure based on digital twin (DT) is proposed. On the basis of accurate virtual simulation model, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and the Gaussian process regression algorithm were combined to drive the optimization process in order to improve the cooling capacity of the system. The results show that the microchannel plates can greatly enhance the cooling capacity of the direct cooling system and effectively improve the uniformity of the coolant. The width of the microchannel plates and the side spacing actually represent the amount of coolant flowing through the inside and outside of the battery module, which significantly impacts the maximum temperature and maximum temperature difference. Increasing the coolant flow can only effectively improve the coo... [more]

Keywords: 3D geomechanical model, caprock, finite element method, Smeaheia, tensile failure
Injection-induced rock mechanical failure risks are critical in CO2 sequestration, and thus there is a need to evaluate these occurrences to ensure safe and reliable subsurface storage. A stress−strain-based numerical simulation can reveal the potential mechanical risks of any CO2 sites. This study investigated the hydromechanical effect on geomechanical failure due to injection-induced stress and pore pressure changes in the prospective CO2 storage site Smeaheia, offshore Norway. An inverted-seismic-property-driven 3D field-scale geomechanical model was carried out in the Smeaheia area to evaluate the rock failure and deformation risks in various pressure-build-up scenarios. A one-way coupling between the before- and after-injection pressure scenarios of nine different models has been iterated using the finite element method. The effect of the sensitivity of total pore volume and pore compressibility on rock mechanical deformation is also evaluated. Although various models illustrated... [more]

Keywords: annual simulation, CO2 emissions, hybrid power system, micro-CHP system, power to gas, residential energy systems, SOFC
Renewable energy sources based on solar and wind energy provide clean and efficient energy. The intermittent behaviour of these sources is challenging. At the same time, the needs for efficient, continuous and clean energy sources are increased for serving both electricity and thermal demands for residential buildings. Consequently, complimentary systems are essential in order to ensure a continuous power generation. One of the promising energy sources that helps in reducing CO2 emissions, in addition to providing electrical and thermal energy efficiently, is a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system operated in a combined heat and power (CHP) mode, due to high electrical efficiencies (in full and part load) and the fuel flexibility. Currently, most studies tend to focus on fuel cell model details with basic information about the building’s energy requirements. Nevertheless, a deep understanding of integrating fuel cell micro-CHP systems with renewable energy systems for the residential se... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heating load, infiltration, multifamily high-rise buildings, stack effect, thermal draft load coefficient
The stack effect is dominant in multifamily high-rise buildings (MFHRBs) in winter because of the considerable height of MFHRBs, which causes a difference in the infiltration amount between floors. This difference causes a heating load difference between floors in a MFHRB. However, there are no indicators to quantify the heating load differences in previous studies. In this article, an indicator—the thermal draft load coefficient (TDLC)—is proposed that can be used to estimate and evaluate the differences between floors in a MFHRB. The TDLC is built on a theoretical model of the stack effect and leakage area of the airflow paths, considering the entire building airflow in a MFHRB. The theoretical model was validated by comparison with a simulation model. The winter average coefficient of variation of the root mean square error and the normalized mean bias error of the theoretical model were acceptable (17.1% and 9.3%, respectively). The TDLC resulted in a maximum of 2.5 and a minimum o... [more]

Keywords: distribution power networks, electric vehicle, grid reinforcement, grid simulation, heat pump, photovoltaic
The integration of future grid customers, e.g., electric vehicles, heat pumps, or photovoltaic modules, will challenge existing low-voltage power grids in the upcoming years. Hence, distribution system operators must quantify future grid reinforcement measures and resulting costs early. On this account, this work initially evaluates different methods to quantify future grid reinforcement needs, applied by the current state of research. Thereby, it indicates the significance of large-scale grid simulations, i.e., simulating several thousand low-voltage grids, to quantify grid reinforcements accurately. Otherwise, a selected area’s total grid reinforcement costs might be misjudged significantly. Due to its fast application, deterministic grid simulations based on coincidence factors are most commonly used in the current state of research to simulate several thousand grids. Hence, in the second step, recent studies’ approaches to applying grid customers’ coincidence factors are evaluated:... [more]

Keywords: large elevation difference pipe, oil transmission pipeline, Simulation, two-phase flow
Oil pipeline construction and operation in mountainous areas have increased in southwestern China, with oil consumption increasing. Such liquid pipelines laid in mountainous areas continuously undulate along the terrain, resulting in many large elevation difference pipe segments. Serious gas block problems often occur during the commissioning process of these pipelines due to the gas/air accumulation at the high point of the pipe, which causes pipeline overpressure and vibration, and even safety accidents such as bursting pipes. To solve this problem, the gas−liquid replacement model and its numerical solution are established with consideration of the initial gas accumulation formation and the gas segment compression processes in a U-shaped pipe during the initial start-up operation. Additionally, considering the interactions of the gas-phase transfer in the continuous U-shaped pipe, and the influence of the length, inclination angle, and backpressure on the air vent process, the gas m...
