Keywords: busbars, cell interconnection, cell-to-module (CTM), connecting pads, CTM simulation, module margin, power and efficiency analysis
A 60-cell photovoltaic (PV) module was analyzed by optimizing the interconnection parameters of the solar cells to enhance the efficiency and increase the power of the PV module setup. The cell-to-module (CTM) losses and gains varied substantially during the various simulation iterations. Optimization was performed to inspect and augment the gain and loss parameters for the 60-cell PV module. The power and efficiency of the module were improved by refining several parameters, such as number of busbars, size of the contact pads, interconnected ribbon width, thickness of the core, and distance between the solar cells and strings, to obtain the maximum efficiency of 21.09%; the CTM efficiency achieved was 94.19% for the proposed strategy related to the common interconnection setup of the ribbon-based system. The CTM efficiency was improved by optimizing the geometrical, optical, and electrical parameters precisely, the power enhancement was up to 325.3 W, and a CTM power of 99.1% was achi... [more]

In which way, and in which sectors, will renewable energy be integrated in the German Energy System by 2030, 2040, and 2050? How can the resulting energy system be characterised following a −95% greenhouse gas emission reduction scenario? Which role will hydrogen play? To address these research questions, techno-economic energy system modelling was performed. Evaluation of the resulting operation of energy technologies was carried out from a system and a business point of view. Special consideration of gas technologies, such as hydrogen production, transport, and storage, was taken as a large-scale and long-term energy storage option and key enabler for the decarbonisation of the non-electric sectors. The broad set of results gives insight into the entangled interactions of the future energy technology portfolio and its operation within a coupled energy system. Amongst other energy demands, CO2 emissions, hydrogen production, and future power plant capacities are presented. One main co... [more]

Keywords: 3D geological modeling, EGS, Rotliegend, thermal conductivity
New seismic data and the completion of the K-1 petroleum exploratory well, located close to the axial zone of the Mogilno-Łódź Trough (Polish Lowlands) delivered new insight into local structural, tectonic, facial and thermal variability of this geological unit. In this paper, the two variants of 3D models (SMV1 and SMV2) of Permian-Mesozoic strata are presented for the salt pillow related Kłecko Anticline, while resources assessment was confined to the Rotliegend Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) type reservoir, that is divided into Playa, Eolian and Fluvial facies-based complexes. Using very conservative assumptions on the methods of the EGS reservoir development, authors assessed that heat in place and technical potential for eolian sandstones are about 386 PJ and ca. 2814 kW, respectively, and for Fluvial 367 PJ and ca. 2850 kW in relation to the volume of 1 km3 at depths of about 5000 m b.s.l. The authors recommend for the further development of the Eolian complex because of its lo... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building suitability, dynamic simulation, fitting regression, solar contribution rate, solar heating
The instability of solar energy and its resource distribution characteristics make it difficult to judge its suitability in practical engineering applications, which hinders its promotion and application. In order to better promote the effective use of solar energy and promote the solar heating system, it is necessary to put forward a simple method of judging the suitability of the solar heating system for engineering application. This study puts forward “F, Q” as the basis for judging the suitability of solar heating systems built on the roof. Two types of public buildings, office buildings and three-star hotels, are taken as the research objects. DeST software is used to change the heating area of the building by superimposing floors to simulate the heat load of the building when the heating area changes. A dynamic simulation coupling model of solar heating system is established in the TRNSYS software to analyze the operating status of the system under all working conditions. The fun... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cooling, electronics, heat sink, vapor chamber
In the current study, a hemispherical shell vapor chamber (HSVC) was proposed and manufactured. A unique system of the HSVC consists of a very short evaporator space and a large condenser area with an inner and outer surface. The HSVC has a bottom surface that can be easily attached to the heat source and its radius varies from 0.045 m (near the bottom surface) to 0.078 m at the top with a curved side. An entirely new design of the integrated section of the large condenser with the evaporator section was verified using a new but simple concept. The current hemispherical shell vapor chamber (HSVC) was made from stainless steel. The current HSVC was specified with an outer/inner diameter of 78/70 mm at the top, a depth of 47 mm in the inner surface area, a total height of 60 mm, 30 mm at the bottom of the inner center, and a diameter of 45 mm on the surface of the outer bottom area. Three different models were manufactured and tested to verify which HSVC reached a high thermal performanc... [more]
Simulation of 15% and 50% Thermal Power Dispatch to an Industrial Facility Using a Flexible Generic Full-Scope Pressurized Water Reactor Plant Simulator
Stephen Hancock, Tyler Westover
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Hydrogen, integrated energy systems, operations, pressurized water reactor
Nuclear power plants in the United States are increasingly challenged to compete in wholesale electricity markets due to the low electricity costs and increasingly dynamic grid conditions from competing generation sources. An alternative market for nuclear power is industrial facilities that can use the thermal and/or electrical power generated by a nuclear power plant to offset the economic losses incurred by electricity market challenges. A generic pressurized water reactor (PWR) simulator was used to show the results of a basic design for a generic thermal power extraction system and tests were run using a set of procedures to show what happens when a nuclear power plant transitions from full electrical power dispatch to 15% and 50% thermal power dispatch. This type of operation leads to losses in turbine performance efficiency due to the deviation from the design operating point, but because the thermal power is also used by the industry load without conversion losses, the combined... Keywords: boil-off gas, liquid hydrogen, Modelling, space, storage tanks, stratification
A model has been developed and implemented in the software package BoilFAST that allows for reliable calculations of the self-pressurization and boil-off losses for liquid hydrogen in different tank geometries and thermal insulation systems. The model accounts for the heat transfer from the vapor to the liquid phase, incorporates realistic heat transfer mechanisms, and uses reference equations of state to calculate thermodynamic properties. The model is validated by testing against a variety of scenarios using multiple sets of industrially relevant data for liquid hydrogen (LH2), including self-pressurization and densification data obtained from an LH2 storage tank at NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre. The model exhibits excellent agreement with experimental and industrial data across a range of simulated conditions, including zero boil-off in microgravity environments, self-pressurization of a stored mass of LH2, and boil-off from a previously pressurized tank as it is being relieved of vap... Keywords: energy harvesting, indoor light analysis, IoT, light source classification, low-cost
With the number of communicating sensors linked to the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem increasing dramatically, well-designed indoor light energy harvesting solutions are needed. A first step in this direction would be to be able to accurately estimate the harvestable energy in a specific light environment. However, inside, this energy varies in spectral composition and intensity, depending on the emission source as well as the time of day. These challenging conditions mean that it has become necessary to obtain accurate information about these variations and determine their impact on energy recovery performance. In this context, this manuscript presented a method to apply an innovative energy harvesting estimation method to obtain practical and accurate insight for the design of energy harvesting systems in indoor environments. It used a very low-cost device to obtain spectral information and fed it to supervised machine learning classification methods to recognize light sources. F... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy simulations, falling-film drain water heat recovery, heat exchanger, TRNSYS, variable plumbing configuration
Falling-film drain water heat recovery (DWHR) systems are heat exchangers utilized in residential buildings for recovering energy from greywater. A recent publication by the authors contained a validated model that can be used to predict the performance of DWHR heat exchangers under variable flowrates and temperatures, and this work shows the implementation of the model into Transient System Simulation Tool (TRNSYS) software to perform energy simulations. This work aims to show the different plumbing configurations in which DWHR heat exchangers could be installed, and to simulate their performance under various conditions. The results show that plumbing configuration has a significant impact on energy savings expected from DWHR heat exchangers, and maximum savings are achieved in equal-flow configuration. However, other plumbing configurations provide significant savings, and the mains temperature could dictate which configuration provides higher energy savings.

Keywords: distributed parameters, electric network, long line equation, mathematical modelling, three-phase power grid, transient electromagnetic processes
Field approaches are employed to develop a mathematical model of a power network section. The facility consists of two electric power subsystems described with ordinary differential equations and presented as concentrated parameter systems connected with a three-phase power supply line, presented as a distributed parameter system. The model of the electric power line is described with partial differential equations. Mathematically, the supply line model is described utilizing a mixed problem with explicitly indefinite boundary conditions. All electromagnetic state equations of the integrated system are introduced in their matrix-vector forms. The equation of the three-phase long supply line is expressed untraditionally as a system of two first-order differential equations as a function of long line voltage. Since the power supply line is part of the integrated system that includes two subsystems, the boundary conditions at the line’s start and end are implicitly defined, avoiding the t... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DrivAer, ground movement, low-drag state, numerical simulation, vehicle aerodynamics, wheel rotation, wheel wake
This paper conducts an analysis of the aerodynamic influence of different ground and wheel states on the Notchback DrivAer by numerical simulation. The effects of the moving ground and rotating wheels are investigated individually and comprehensively. Experimental data are also included for validation. Through this study, a unique and important low-drag state is observed, in which the vehicle wake near the center region becomes more symmetrical, the pressure on the upper middle base is recovered and the total aerodynamic drag decreases significantly. Furthermore, the formation of this state is determined by the flow rate near the surface of the rear underbody. When the wheels are rotating, the wheel wakes are weakened. On one hand, the drag of wheels and the two sides of the base region is reduced. On the other hand, the boundary layer near the underbody is thinned and the flow near the underbody surface is accelerated, transforming the wake to the low-drag state. Moreover, the moving... [more]

A Review of Recent Best Practices in the Development of Real-Time Power System Simulators from a Simulator Manufacturer’s Perspective
Kati Sidwall, Paul Forsyth
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CHIL, EMT, hardware-in-the-loop, HIL, PHIL, real-time simulation
As the power system undergoes continued change—widespread integration of inverter-based resources, electrification of transportation systems, decentralization, and increased digitization—the best practices for power system studies and device testing are also evolving. Electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation is being used progressively by transmission and distribution system operators, equipment manufacturers, education and research institutions, and consultants who require a greater depth of analysis than is possible with traditional (RMS-based) system representation. Real-time simulation is becoming increasingly prevalent in the aforementioned verticals as it provides an efficient means of EMT analysis and also enables hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing of protection, control, and power devices. Real-time simulator manufacturers must continually develop their technology to improve the scope and accuracy of the power system components and phenomena that can be represented, the range... [more]

Keywords: low voltage distribution grid, power system modelling, voltage measurement, voltage quality, voltage quality improvement
Smart Cities can benefit from existing municipal low voltage (LV) distribution grids by supporting public services with permanent power supply and providing grid connection points to distributed generators (DG). The increased integration of DGs and inverter based non-linear loads increases voltage quality issues, thus the cost-efficient assurance of voltage quality in LV grids with long radial lines is of increasing importance for the operators of municipal electricity distribution systems. Conventional methods for mitigating voltage quality issues (e.g., power line renovation) might not be optimal solutions either technologically or economically. Existing studies do not address all relevant issues related to the assurance of required voltage quality in such LV grids. This paper provides an overview of the applicability and rationality of traditional as well as alternative methods to solve voltage problems in LV grids. The authors use DIgSILENT PowerFactory software to simulate the per... [more]

Keywords: aerodynamic performance at stall, bio-inspiration, Computational Fluid Dynamics, deformation, dynamic mesh, morphing wing, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes, turbulence models, turbulent flow
This paper presents an unsteady flow analysis of a 3D wing with a morphing trailing edge flap (TEF) and a seamless side-edge transition between the morphed and static parts of a wing by introducing an unsteady parametrization method. First, a 3D steady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) analysis of a statically morphed TEF with seamless transition is performed and the results are compared with both a baseline clean wing and a wing with a traditional hinged flap configuration at a Reynolds number of 0.7 × 106 for a range of angles of attack (AoA), from 4° to 15°. This study extends some previous published work by examining the inherent unsteady 3D effects due to the presence of the seamless transition. It is found that in the pre-stall regime, the statically morphed wing produces a maximum of a 22% higher lift and a near constant drag reduction of 25% compared with the hinged flap wing, resulting in up to 40% enhancement in the aerodynamic efficiency (i.e., lift/drag ratio). March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BEM, Computational Fluid Dynamics, icing conditions, power loss, wind turbine
The objective of this article is to review the methodologies used in the last 15 years to estimate the power loss in wind turbines due to their exposure to adverse meteorological conditions. Among the methods, the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for the three-dimensional numerical simulation of wind turbines is highlighted, as well as the use of two-dimensional CFD simulation in conjunction with the blade element momentum theory (BEM). In addition, a brief review of other methodologies such as image analysis, deep learning, and forecasting models is also presented. This review constitutes a baseline for new investigations of the icing effects on wind turbines’ power outputs. Furthermore, it contributes to a continuous improvement in power-loss prediction and the better response of icing protection systems.

Keywords: anomaly detection, correlation, Machine Learning, time series analysis
The rapid industrial growth in solar energy is gaining increasing interest in renewable power from smart grids and plants. Anomaly detection in photovoltaic (PV) systems is a demanding task. In this sense, it is vital to utilize the latest updates in machine learning technology to accurately and timely disclose different system anomalies. This paper addresses this issue by evaluating the performance of different machine learning schemes and applying them to detect anomalies on photovoltaic components. The following schemes are evaluated: AutoEncoder Long Short-Term Memory (AE-LSTM), Facebook-Prophet, and Isolation Forest. These models can identify the PV system’s healthy and abnormal actual behaviors. Our results provide clear insights to make an informed decision, especially with experimental trade-offs for such a complex solution space.

Keywords: Big Data, hydrocarbon exploration, Machine Learning, multivariant analysis, reservoir, subsurface characterisation, supervised learning, unsupervised learning
Large databases of legacy hydrocarbon reservoir and well data provide an opportunity to use modern data mining techniques to improve our understanding of the subsurface in the presence of uncertainty and improve predictability of reservoir properties. A data mining approach provides a way to screen dependencies in reservoir and fluid data and enable subsurface specialists to estimate absent properties in partial or incomplete datasets. This allows for uncertainty to be managed and reduced. An improvement in reservoir characterisation using machine learning results from the capacity of machine learning methods to detect and model hidden dependencies in large multivariate datasets with noisy and missing data. This study presents a workflow applied to a large basin-scale reservoir characterization database. The study aims to understand the dependencies between reservoir attributes in order to allow for predictions to be made to improve the data coverage. The machine learning workflow comp... [more]

Keywords: attention mechanism, Genetic Algorithm, inter-hour forecast, long short-term memory, solar radiation
The installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation occupies an increasing proportion in the power system, and its stability is greatly affected by the fluctuation of solar radiation. Accurate prediction of solar radiation is an important prerequisite for ensuring power grid security and electricity market transactions. The current mainstream solar radiation prediction method is the deep learning method, and the structure design and data selection of the deep learning method determine the prediction accuracy and speed of the network. In this paper, we propose a novel long short-term memory (LSTM) model based on the attention mechanism and genetic algorithm (AGA-LSTM). The attention mechanism is used to assign different weights to each feature, so that the model can focus more attention on the key features. Meanwhile, the structure and data selection parameters of the model are optimized through genetic algorithms, and the time series memory and processing capabilities of LSTM are u... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bubble dynamics, film boiling, heat transfer characteristics, numerical simulation, tube heater, wire heater
Due to the low boiling point of hydrogen, the boiling phenomenon is usually encountered in the applications of liquid hydrogen. The underlying mechanism as well as the physical performance of film boiling over horizontal cylinders are not yet fully understood, especially for the various diameters. In this paper, pool film boiling of hydrogen over horizontal cylinders with diameters ranging from 0.2 to 30 mm is investigated based on the volume-of-fluid method. By the analysis of the gas−liquid interface evolution and the heat transfer mechanism, the cylinders are divided into wire heaters, transition heaters, and tube heaters. The results show that the heat transfer of the wire is affected by the evolution of a single bubble, while the heat transfer of the tube is mainly affected by the movement of multiple crescent-shaped gas structures along the surface. Besides, with the increase in cylinder diameter, the bubble detachment diameter increases, the heat flux decreases correspondingly,... [more]

The EN ISO 52016-1:2017 standard introduced a new methodology for the hourly calculation of energy needs that allows the study of the dynamic energy performance of buildings. In this study, a comparative analysis was carried out between two heat transfer models for opaque building elements: the one described in the new standard EN ISO 52016-1:2017 (Annex B) and that proposed by the Italian national annex (Annex A). The analysis, carried out on 1854 cases, showed better results for the heating period than for the cooling period, with a lower Root-Mean-Square Error and Coefficient of Variation of the Root-Mean-Square Error for the model proposed by the Italian National Annex. Increasing the performance of the building by decreasing the solar transmission coefficient of the glazed surfaces leads to a worse Root-Mean-Square Error of about 11%. In addition, a sensitivity analysis of the thermo-physical parameters of the opaque building components was carried out and an alternative method fo... [more]
