Numerical Simulation of Aging by Water-Trees of XPLE Insulator Used in a Single Hi-Voltage Phase of Smart Composite Power Cables for Offshore Farms
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: aging, Hi-Voltage Power cables, numerical modeling, offshore, phase, water-trees, wind energy, XPLE insulator
Submarine power cables are expected to last 20 years without maintenance to be considered technologically reliable enough and economically beneficial. One of the main issues facing this target is the development of what is called commonly water-trees (nanometer-sized flaws filled with residual humidity), that form within XLPE (cross-linked Polyethylene) insulators and then migrate towards copper, thus leading to its corrosion and further to possible shut-down. Water trees are resulting from the coalescence of nanovoids filled with residual humidity that migrate towards copper under the combined effects of electrical forces and plastic deformation. The nanovoids are originated during manufacturing, shipping, handling and embedding in deep seas. The formation of these nanovoids leads to the degradation of the service lifetime of submarine power cables. Current research is intended to come up with a way to go a little further towards the generalization of coalescence of n nanovoids. In th... [more]

Using Deep Learning in Real-Time for Clothing Classification with Connected Thermostats
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: clothing classifier, CNN models, connected thermostat, thermal comfort
Thermal comfort is associated with clothing insulation, conveying a level of satisfaction with the thermal surroundings. Besides, clothing insulation is commonly associated with indoor thermal comfort. However, clothing classification in smart homes might save energy when the end-user wears appropriate clothes to save energy and obtain thermal comfort. Furthermore, object detection and classification through Convolutional Neural Networks has increased over the last decade. There are real-time clothing garment classifiers, but these are oriented towards single garment recognition for texture, fabric, shape, or style. Consequently, this paper proposes a CNN model classification for the implementation of these classifiers on cameras. First, the Fashion MNIST was analyzed and compared with the VGG16, Inceptionvv4, TinyYOLOv3, and ResNet18 classification algorithms to determine the best clo classifier. Then, for real-time analysis, a new dataset with 12,000 images was created and analyzed w... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: longwall working, numerical modeling, roof fall, stability, unmined longwall panel
The main goal of the paper is numerical simulation for investigation of damage causes in the working of a longwall located under the unmined longwall panel. The paper presents the results of model-based research on the stability of the roof of a longwall working in a zone subject to cave-in mining, taking into account the influence of mining conditions in the form of an unmined coal seam located 115 m above the exploited seam. It presents the geometry of the rock mass under study, the discretization area of the solution, and gives an overview of the assumptions used to build the numerical model. The authors discuss the results of numerical simulations of the influence of mining phenomena on the formation of roof falls in the longwall. Based on the results of numerical simulations, the process of identifying the size of roof falls in a longwall working (loss of stability) was carried out through their appropriate classification. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, flight safety, handling qualities, helicopter offshore operation, helicopter vortex–rotor interaction, offshore wind energy, piloted simulation, rotorcraft, wake vortex encounter, wind turbine wake
Helicopters are used for offshore wind farms for maintenance and support flights. The number of helicopter operations is increasing with the expansion of offshore wind energy, which stresses the point that the current German regulations have not yet been validated through scientific analysis. A collaborative research project between DLR, the Technical University of Munich, the University of Stuttgart and the University of Tübingen has been conducted to examine the sizes of the flight corridors on offshore wind farms and the lateral safety clearance for helicopter hoist operations at offshore wind turbines. This paper details the results of piloted helicopter simulations in a realistic offshore wind farm scenario. The far-wake of rotating wind turbines and the near-wake of non-rotating wind turbines have been simulated with high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics under realistic turbulent inflow conditions. The resulting flow fields have been processed by superposition during piloted... [more]

Empirical Modeling of Viscosities and Softening Points of Straight-Run Vacuum Residues from Different Origins and of Hydrocracked Unconverted Vacuum Residues Obtained in Different Conversions
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: asphaltenes, empirical modeling, hydrocracked vacuum residue, intercriteria analysis, softening point, vacuum residue, viscosity
The use of hydrocracked and straight-run vacuum residues in the production of road pavement bitumen requires a good understanding of how the viscosity and softening point can be modeled and controlled. Scientific reports on modeling of these rheological properties for hydrocracked and straight-run vacuum residues are scarce. For that reason, 30 straight-run vacuum residues and 33 hydrocracked vacuum residues obtained in a conversion range of 55−93% were investigated, and the characterization data were employed for modeling purposes. An intercriteria analysis was applied to investigate the statistically meaningful relations between the studied vacuum residue properties. It revealed that the straight-run and hydrocracked vacuum residues were completely different, and therefore their viscosity and softening point should be separately modeled. Through the use of nonlinear regression by applying CAS Maple and NLPSolve with the modified Newton iterative method and the vacuum residue bulk pro... [more]

Prediction of Electric Buses Energy Consumption from Trip Parameters Using Deep Learning
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: deep learning, electric buses, energy prediction, urban bus network
The energy demand of electric buses (EBs) is a very important parameter that should be considered by transport companies when introducing electric buses into the urban bus fleet. This article proposes a novel deep-learning-based model for predicting energy consumption of an electric bus traveling in an urban area. The model addresses two important issues: accuracy and cost of prediction. The aim of the research was to develop the deep-learning-based prediction model, which requires only the data readily available to bus fleet operators, such as location of the bus stops (coordinates, altitude), route traveled, schedule, travel time between stops, and to find the most suitable type and configuration of neural network to evaluate the model. The developed prediction model was assessed with different types of deep neural networks using real data collected for several bus lines in a medium-sized city in Poland. Conducted research has shown that the deep learning network with autoencoders (D... [more]

Human Perception and Building Automation Systems
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building automation, building information modeling, building management, occupant feedback, prototyping
Building automation is concerned with closed- and open-loop control of building services such as heating, cooling, ventilation and air conditioning, lighting and shading. The ultimate goal is to reduce energy consumption while providing comfort for the occupants. However, ensuring human comfort is a complex affair. In case of dissatisfaction, users need to inform the building operators about apparently badly adjusted setpoints. Then, service units of the facility management have to manually analyze how to improve the situation. Due to the complex characteristics of human perception and derived feedback, this can become a troublesome and time-consuming task. This paper describes the main results of our investigations to improve occupant comfort in office buildings using environmental information monitored by a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and human perception collected from a feedback tool. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cement transporter, computer simulations, finite element method, geotechnics, mass mixing
Regarding the vehicles used in civil engineering, some are manufactured in large quantities and some (especially innovative ones) are still prototypes manufactured for tests or rare use. The latter describes the case of equipment for mass mixing (mass stabilization) technology which is not widely used compared to other types of geotechnical equipment. The purpose of this paper is to present a research and development project on an innovative cement transporter designed for mass mixing. Three-dimensional models and advanced finite element method (FEM) calculations are used to validate the design of the most important part of the cement transporter—the frame connecting the undercarriage and the upper carriage. The results presented in the paper confirm that the design based on the strength criterion and boundary conditions from geotechnical safety requirements can be used for designing the parts of the prototype vehicle. Low-Order Reactor-Network-Based Prediction of Pollutant Emissions Applied to FLOX® Combustion
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD simulation, Chemkin reactor network models, FLOX® combustion, NOx and CO emissions, RANS
Prediction of pollutant emissions is a key aspect of modern combustor design in energy conversion systems. In the presented work, a simple and robust model based on low-order reaction networks is applied to a FLOX® laboratory combustor at atmospheric conditions. The applied approach is computationally cheap and therefore highly suited for design studies. Steady-state CFD RANS simulations are carried out, serving as a basis for the network generation algorithm. CFD results are validated with experimental data for flow field and combustion. Different degrees of fidelity of reactor network models are taken into consideration and findings are opposed to measurements, evaluating the quality of the low-fidelity models. Validation of CO and NOx emission results of reactor network modeling provides accurate qualitative and quantitative reproduction of experimental findings, depending on the degree of heat loss applied on the combustion system. The introduced approach is therefore readily appli... [more]

Power Hardware-In-the-Loop Approach for Autonomous Power Generation System Analysis
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: PHIL, power distribution system, Power Hardware-In-the-Loop, real-time modelling, synchronous generator
The article presents the Power Hardware-In-the-Loop (PHIL) dynamic model of a synchronous generator of 125 kVA for autonomous power generation system analysis. This type of system is typically composed of electrical energy sources in the form of several diesel generator units with synchronous machines, the main distribution switchboard and different loads. In modern power distribution systems, the proposed power management strategies are typically aimed at the minimization of fuel consumption by maintaining the operation of diesel generator units at peak efficiency. In order to design and test such a system in conditions as close as possible to the real operating conditions, without constructing an actual power distribution system, a PHIL model in the form of a power inverter that emulates the behaviour of a real synchronous generator is proposed. The PHIL model was prepared in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, compiled to the C language and fed into a 150 kVA bidirectional DC/AC commer... [more]

Temperature Variation Law of Core Tube Wall during Coring in Different Strength Coal Seams: Experiment and Modelling
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coal seam gas content, coal seam strength, core tube wall, coring, temperature variation
Temperature is the primary factor affecting the law of coal gas desorption. When the core method is used to measure the coal seam gas content (CSGS), the temperature of the coal core sample (CCS) will increase. The heat generated by the core bit cutting and rubbing the coal during coring is transferred to the CCS through the core tube, resulting in the temperature rising of the CCS. Because the CCS entering the core tube during coring is a dynamic process, the temperature of CCS is difficult to measure. To solve this problem, the temperatures of the core tube wall during coring in the Jiulishan coal mine (JLS), Guhanshan coal mine (GHS) and Zhaogu coal mine (ZG) at the core depth of 20 m were measured by the self-designed temperature measuring device. The thermodynamic models of the core bit and the core tube during coring were established. The reliability of the model was verified by comparing the numerical simulation results with the field measurement results. The verified model was... [more]

CFD-Based Erosion and Corrosion Modeling of a Pipeline with CO2-Containing Gas−Water Two-Phase Flow
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: acid dissolved gas, bubble cavitation, CFD simulation, flow-assisted corrosion, gas–water two-phase flow, natural gas pipeline, wall shear stress
A natural gas transportation pipeline with a gas−water two-phase flow containing CO2 is prone to severe flow-assisted corrosion (FAC). The accumulation location of the water phase in the pipeline and the wall shear stress distribution are important factors affecting the severity of this phenomenon. In this work, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed using the realizable k-ε model and volume of fluid (VOF) model to determine the gas−water volume fraction distribution and wall shear stress in a gas−water two-phase pipeline and established a pipeline corrosion prediction model. By determining where the water phase accumulates in the pipeline, the potential corrosion area could be predicted. By alleviating the phenomena of excessive local wall shear stress and bubble cavitation, the FAC due to the formation of stress and acid gas can be controlled. The simulation results lay a certain foundation for the corrosion research of gas−liquid two-phase flow pipelines.

Mesh-Based 3D MEC Modeling of a Novel Hybrid Claw Pole Generator
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: claw pole generator (CPG), hybrid excitation (HE), magnet equivalent circuit (MEC), permanent magnet (PM)
A brushless parallel hybrid excitation claw pole generator (HECPG) is proposed for electric vehicle (EV) application. Permanent magnet (PM) excitation method can reduce the volume of the machine and improve the power density and efficiency. Moreover, the voltage regulation can be ensured by field excitation. The flux path of the proposed HECPG is complex, and it will take a long time for 3D finite element analysis (FEA) to process it. To reduce simulation time, the mathematical model of the generator is given by a mesh-based 3D magnet equivalent circuit (MEC) network method considering radial and axial flux, magnetic saturation, and magnetic flux leakage. The performance of the generator is analyzed by FEA and prototype experiment. Finally, the results of 3D MEC, FEA, and experiment are compared. There is little difference between the three results, so 3D MEC can ensure the accuracy and significantly reduce the simulation time. The efficiency of the proposed HECPG is 90%, and the DC-Bu... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electromagnetic analysis, frequency-dependent soil models, lightning, modal decomposition, multiphase overhead lines
This article investigates the influence of four causal frequency-dependent (FD) soil models and their impact on the responses of a multiphase overhead transmission line (OHTL) with ground wires, generated by a lightning strike. The FD models proposed by Longmire-Smith (LS), Messier (M), Portela (P) and Alípio-Visacro (AV) are considered. The ground-return impedance and admittance matrices are computed with the Nagakawa approach for both frequency-constant and FD soil models. The frequency-domain modal voltages and time-domain transient voltages are assessed in this work. Modal decomposition technique is used to study the attenuation constant, propagation velocity and voltages for each propagation mode. Simulations are carried out in a frequency range of 100 Hz to 10 MHz, for OHTLs with lengths of 1 and 10 km, on soils of 700 and 4000 Ω·m. Simulation results demonstrated that the Portela (P) model has resulted in more significant variation in the ground-return impedance and admittance,... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: FindFit, Modelling, one diode, Ortiz–Conde method, physical parameters, Schottky barrier diode
In the current work, the exact analytical expression of the current−voltage characteristics, which are given in terms of the LambertW function, is used to extract the physical parameters of organic and inorganic Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs). The extraction is achieved by a variety of methods using the experimental I−V characteristics. The organic SBD is based on a Poly (3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyle) conjugated polymer (P3HT) with Al contact, measured at 300 K. Regarding the inorganic SBDs, one is based on Iridium−Silicon Carbide (Ir−SiC), measured at 300 K, and the second diode is based on Gold−Gallium Arsenide (Au−GaAs), measured at 200 K. The numerical characteristics based on the physical parameters extracted by the presented methods are in good agreement with the experimental data. The determination coefficient of the modeling methods for the three SBDs is higher than 99.99%.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: efficiency, heat pump, part load, Simulation
This paper aims to determine cost optimality between heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems operating with air to water heat pumps (AWHP) and water to water heat pumps (WWHP). The analysis is performed for a certain number of heat pump units with fixed and variable capacity made by four manufacturers available on European market. Influence of a Central Jet on Isothermal and Reacting Swirling Flow in a Model Combustion Chamber
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: combustion chamber, large-eddy simulation, particle image velocimetry, precessing vortex core, swirling flow
We studied flow dynamics in a model combustion chamber using Large-eddy simulations (LES) and Particle image velocimetry (PIV) at the Reynolds number Re of 15,000. The swirl is produced using a Turbomeca swirler and air flow, while combustion is supported by a central methane/air jet. We compared four flow regimes, assessing the effect of the central jet for isothermal and lean reacting conditions. A detailed comparison for isothermal and reactive cases without the central jet is described, validating the LES results against PIV. We observe that unsteady dynamics are governed by global instability in the form of a well-known precessing vortex core (PVC). The central jet slightly changes the dynamics of PVC in the isothermal case where a strong recirculation zone is still formed. However, for the reacting case, the bubble is completely destroyed with no signs of strong vortical structures in the inner shear layer. These observations are confirmed using spectral analysis and proper ortho... [more]

Using a Genetic Algorithm to Achieve Optimal Matching between PMEP and Diameter of Intake and Exhaust Throat of a High-Boost-Ratio Engine
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Genetic Algorithm, high-boost-ratio engine, optimization design
With the increasingly stringent CO2 emission regulations, the degree of strengthening of the engines is increasing. Under high-pressure conditions, the airway throat parts of the intake and exhaust systems have a great influence on the flow loss of the diesel engine. The reasonable distribution of the throat area of the intake and exhaust ports in the limited cylinder headspace is key to improving the performance of supercharged engines. This study took a large-bore, high-pressure ratio diesel engine as the research object. Firstly, the three-dimensional (3D) flow simulation method was used to reveal the influence law of different throat areas on the engine intake and exhaust flow under steady-state conditions, and a steady-flow test bench was built to verify the accuracy of the simulation model and law. Secondly, based on the 3D steady-state calculation and test results, a more accurate one-dimensional simulation model was constructed, and a joint optimization simulation platform was... [more]

Study on Fiber Clogging Mechanism in Sewage Pump Based on CFD−DEM Simulation
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD–DEM, fiber blockage, reflux vortex, sewage pump
A large number of solid particles and fibrous impurities are always entrained in the fluid transported by a sewage pump, which can easily lead to the blockage of the sewage pump. In view of this, CFD−DEM simulations were conducted in this paper to reveal the fiber clogging mechanism in the sewage pump. A CFD−DEM coupling method with a fiber model was established and verified by an experimental benchmark, i.e., the rectangular flow channel. The method was then applied to a model sewage pump to, after mesh independence tests, analyze the effects of flow rate and fiber length on fiber motion and clogging. The results showed that the position of fiber retention coincides with the position of the vortex, mainly located at the inlet of the impeller, the head of the blade, the middle of the blade, and the tongue in the pump. In the case of a low flow rate, the fiber was more likely to cause blockage in the head of the blade, and in the case of a large flow rate, the fiber would wind around th... [more]
