Analysis of Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer inside a Batch Reactor for Hydrothermal Carbonization Process of a Biomass
Hamza Chater, Mohamed Asbik, Abdelghani Koukouch, Ammar Mouaky, Stéphane Bostyn, Brahim Sarh, Fouzi Tabet
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: batch reactor, CFD modeling, dispersed medium, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonization, olive pomace
This work analyzes the heat transfer and fluid flow within a batch reactor for hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of raw olive pomace (ROP). The autoclave is partially filled with a mixture of ROP and distilled water and hence it is considered as a dispersed medium. The reactor is heated through its lateral surface, whereas the bottom wall and the upper surface of the mixture are thermally insulated. Under the effect of heat and pressure, the fluid moves inside the reactor, while particles are subject to other forces. Additionally, the biomass (ROP) is decomposed into very fine particles to produce a solid product (hydrochar). COMSOL Multiphysics software is used for the analysis of heat transfer and fluid dynamics. Chemical kinetics of the reactions are modeled by a basic kinetics model. Numerical results are validated using experimental data carried out in similar operating conditions. They are in good agreement since the deviation between them does not exceed 6%. Voltage Stabilisation of a Drive System Including a Power Transformer and Asynchronous and Synchronous Motors of Susceptible Motion Transmission
Andriy Chaban, Marek Lis, Andrzej Szafraniec
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asynchronous drives, distributed parameter systems, drive systems, long elastic elements, mathematical modelling, oscillatory processes, synchronous drives
A mathematical model is developed of the master circuit of an electric driver system including a power transformer and susceptible motion transmission of asynchronous and synchronous drives. Electric motors drive water pumps by means of motion transmission that comprises two elastic couplings of lumped mechanical parameters and a long shaft of distributed mechanical parameters. Differential equations for oscillatory processes for the long shaft and the elastic couplings are different. The shaft is described with partial derivative Euler−Poisson equations, which, combined with the boundary conditions, form mixed problems from the mathematical point of view. The elastic couplings, on the other hand, are described with the ordinary second type Lagrange equations. Based on the theory of electromagnetic field, the partial differential equations describe the skin effects across the rotor age bars. Vertical pumps are presented by means of a loading torque waveform as a function of the input s... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, Genetic Algorithm, indoor thermal comfort monitoring, IoT network, Machine Learning
Monitoring the thermal comfort of building occupants is crucial for ensuring sustainable and efficient energy consumption in residential buildings. It enables not only remote real-time detection of situations, but also a timely reaction to reduce the damage made by harmful situations in targeted buildings. In this paper, we first design a new Internet of Things (IoT) architecture in order to provide remote availability of both indoor and outdoor conditions, with respect to the limited energy of IoT devices. We then build a multi-output prediction model of indoor parameters using a random forest learning algorithm, and based on a longitudinal real dataset of one year. Our prediction model considers outdoor conditions to predict the indoor ones. Hence, it helps to detect discomfort situations in real-time when comparing predicted variables to real ones. Furthermore, when detecting an indoor thermal discomfort, we provide a new genetic-based algorithm to find the most suitable values of i... [more]
An Investigation of the Vibration Modes of an External Gear Pump through Experiments and Numerical Modeling
Sangbeom Woo, Andrea Vacca
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bolted joints, external gear pump, hydraulic pump, modal analysis, modal parameter extraction
This paper presents an experimental and numerical modal analysis for an external gear pump considering its mounting on a test rig in a laboratory setting. Most of the previous studies on experimental modal analysis (EMA) of hydraulic pumps focused on the modal frequencies to allow model validation. However, the mode shapes of pump bodies have not extensively been discussed. Furthermore, the nature of the pump components assembly and mounting poses some modeling challenges, such as the uncertain material properties of each component, the behavior of the bolted joints, and some critical modeling boundary conditions related to pump mounting. In this regard, the experimentally obtained vibration modes of a reference pump using the least-square complex exponential (LSCE) method are analyzed with an emphasis on the characteristics of the mode shapes. Then, simple modeling strategies are proposed and validated by performing the analysis from the component level to the full assembly. As a resu... [more]
Performance Assessment of a nZEB Carbon Neutral Living/Office Space and Its Integration into a District Energy-Hub

Keywords: BIPV, building simulation, energy data, energy hub, nZEB, solar architecture
The integrated performance assessment of buildings can orient their design in the early stages. Despite the wide availability of physics simulation-based, data-driven, and hybrid techniques, it is often difficult to rely on a single, appropriate technique to obtain reliable results. A set of methods, each featuring advantages and limitations, help to refine the performance assessment in an iterative comparative process until a comprehensive picture of the building is achieved. The approach was implemented on a nearly zero-energy building, recently built-up as a combined living and office space (e.g., the SolAce unit) on the NEST infrastructure in Dübendorf (Switzerland). The proposed approach showed that the unit reaches high energy performance accordingly requiring optimal cooling management, involving the control of the opening of blinds and windows. A sound convergence between the computer simulations and data-driven analysis were observed, attesting to the overall energy consumptio... [more]
Large Eddy Simulations of a Low-Swirl Gaseous Partially Premixed Lifted Flame in Presence of Wall Heat Losses

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion modeling, Flamelet-Generated Manifold, heat loss, Large Eddy Simulation, lifted flames, partially premixed combustion, stretch, Thickened Flame
The use of lifted flames presents some very promising advantages in terms of pollutant emissions and flame stability. The focus here is on a specific low-swirl injection system operated with methane and derived from an air-blast atomizer for aero-engine applications, which is responsible for flame lift-off. The key feature of this concept is the interaction between the swirling jet and the confinement walls, leading to a strong outer recirculation zone and thus to an upstream transport of combustion products from the main reaction region to the flame base. Here, the representation of the physics involved is challenging, since finite-rate effects govern the lift-off occurrence, and only a few numerical studies have been carried out on this test case so far. The aim of the present work is therefore to understand the limits of some state-of-the-art combustion models within the context of LES. Considering this context, two different strategies are adopted: the Flamelet-Generated Manifold (... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC circuit breaker, LC divergence oscillation circuit, PSCAD/EMTDC program, superconducting element
We proposed a superconducting DC circuit breaker that can reliably cut off the fault currents in preparation for the DC system. It consists of a superconducting element and a mechanical DC circuit breaker. The mechanical DC circuit breaker is connected in parallel with a mechanical high-speed switch, an LC divergence oscillation circuit, and a surge arrester. This provides stable cutoff operation due to the fault-current-limiting operation of the superconducting element and the artificial current zero point of the mechanical DC circuit breaker. In this paper, the operating principle of the LC divergence oscillation circuit that creates an artificial current zero point was reviewed based on the theory. We used experimental data to model the time constant of the initial fault current, the arc model generated by the mechanical high-speed switch, and the experimental equipment. As a result, the LC divergence oscillation circuit was confirmed in the simulation, and simulation modeling was r... [more]
Feasibility Assessment of a Dual Intake-Port Scroll Expander Operating in an ORC-Based Power Unit

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dual intake port scroll expander, fluid-dynamic model, model-based design, organic rankine cycle (ORC), theoretical characterization of scroll expander, waste heat recovery (WHR)
The main driver of research in the road transportation sector is almost certainly the development of technologies which allow for the reduction of CO2 emissions from internal combustion engines (ICEs). Wasted heat recovery (WHR) from the exhaust gases of ICEs based on organic rankine cycle (ORC) power units is one of the most promising technological solutions. However, several issues are raised when the recovery unit is scaled down to small applications, not to mention the fact that thermal sources are characterized by their intrinsically transient nature, as is the case with ICEs. In fact, this leads the ORC unit having to work frequently in off-design conditions. To successfully overcome this issue, the proper design and selection of the expanders are crucial. They are generally chosen from volumetric-type machines, thanks to their capacity to deal with time-varying thermo-fluid dynamic inlet properties. Among them, scroll machines represent one of the best solutions, despite them no... [more]
Non-Intrusive Delay-Based Model Partitioning for Distributed Real-Time Simulation
Milica Bogdanovic, Marija Stevic, Antonello Monti
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: circuit simulations, distributed real-time simulations, model partitioning, power system simulations, system partitioning
The work in this article analyses the impact of time-delays on distributed real-time simulation stability and accuracy with respect to different decoupling points as well as the impact of decoupling point selection on system modes. We perform analysis of the system modes and participation matrix of the system and determine suitable points that negligibly modify the system modes to decouple the original system. From this analysis, a non-intrusive delay-based model partitioning method for distributing real-time simulations that exploits the flexibility in the context of selecting decoupling points is developed.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dissolution, fractured media, groundwater, gypsum karstification, permeability-porosity relationship, porosity changes, reactive transport model
Gypsum dissolution leads to the development of karstic features within much shorter timescales than in other sedimentary rocks, potentially leading to rapid deterioration of groundwater quality and increasing the risk of catastrophes caused by subsidence. Here, we present a 2-D reactive transport model to evaluate gypsum karstification in physically and chemically heterogeneous systems. The model considers a low-permeability rock matrix composed mainly of gypsum and a discontinuity (fracture), which acts as a preferential water pathway. Several scenarios are analyzed and simulated to investigate the relevance for gypsum karstification of: (1) the dynamic update of flow and transport parameters due to porosity changes; (2) the spatial distribution of minerals in the rock matrix; (3) the time evolution of water inflows through the boundaries of the model; (4) the functions relating permeability, k, to porosity, ϕ. The average porosity of the matrix after 1000 years of simulation increase... [more]
A Polynomial Approximation to Self Consistent Solution for Schrödinger−Poisson Equations in Superlattice Structures
Mariusz Mączka, Stanisław Pawłowski
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: polynomials approximation, Schrödinger–Poisson equations, semiconductor superlattices, transfer matrix method
The paper deals with a new approach to iterative solving the Schrödinger and Poisson equations in the first type of semiconductor superlattice. Assumptions of the transfer matrix method are incorporated into the approach, which allows to take into account the potential varying within each single layer of bias voltage superlattice. The key process of the method is to approximate the charge density and wave functions with polynomials. It allows to obtain semi-analytical solutions for the Schrödinger and Poisson equations, which in turn have significant impact on the accuracy and speed of superlattice simulations. The presented procedure is also suifihue for finding eigenstates extended over relatively large superlattice area, and it can be used as an effective pro-gram module for a superlattice finite model. The obtained quantum states are very similar to the Wannier-Stark functions, and they can serve as the base under non-equilibrium Green’s function formalism (NEGF). Exemplary results... [more]

Keywords: energy system modeling, offshore grid, Optimization, sector coupling, sustainability transition
Offshore grids can play key roles in the transition of energy systems toward sustainability. Although they require extensive infrastructure investments, they allow for the exploitation of additional resources and may be important in providing for part of the increasing electricity demands driven by sector coupling. This paper quantifies the socioeconomic value of offshore grids and identifies their major drivers, performing energy system optimization in a model application of the northern−central European energy system and the North Sea offshore grid towards 2050. The increasing wake loss with the sizes of hub-connected wind farms is integrated in the modeling. We find that without sector coupling no offshore grid may develop, and that the higher the level of sector coupling, the higher the value of offshore grids. Therefore, it can be strongly stated that offshore grid infrastructure development should not be discussed as a separate political topic, but seen in connection to sector co... [more]

Commercial buildings are a significant consumer of energy worldwide. Logistics facilities, and specifically warehouses, are a common building type which remain under-researched in the demand-side energy forecasting literature. Warehouses have an idiosyncratic profile when compared to other commercial and industrial buildings with a significant reliance on a small number of energy systems. As such, warehouse owners and operators are increasingly entering energy performance contracts with energy service companies (ESCOs) to minimise environmental impact, reduce costs, and improve competitiveness. ESCOs and warehouse owners and operators require accurate forecasts of their energy consumption so that precautionary and mitigation measures can be taken. This paper explores the performance of three machine learning models (Support Vector Regression (SVR), Random Forest, and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost)), three deep learning models (Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), Long Short-Term Memo... Keywords: CB-SEM, customer satisfaction, PLS-SEM, quality of service, residential electricity distribution
The main objective of this study is to apply structural equation modeling with partial least squares, and based on covariance, to assess the satisfaction of residential electricity consumers. The methodology used compares the results of both structural equation models to indicate the model that best fits the problem of measuring the satisfaction of residential consumers with electricity concessionaires and licensees. The sample used in the survey contained questionnaire responses from 86,175 individuals considering the period from 2014 to 2018. The constructs evaluated were satisfaction, quality, value, loyalty, and trust. A confidence interval analysis shows that all weights are significant, demonstrating the importance of all the indicators that represent the constructs. The trust, quality, and value constructs can explain 74.4% of the satisfaction construct variability, so this relationship’s explanatory capacity is considered substantial. Finally, the evaluation of the performance... [more]
Numerical Simulations of Heat Loss Effect on Premixed Jet Flame Using Flamelet Generated Manifold Combustion Model
Jesse W. Hofsteenge, Alireza Ghasemi Khourinia, Jim B. W. Kok
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Modelling, numerical simulation, tabulated chemistry, turbulent combustion
Numerical simulations are performed on a combustor setup which represents the recirculating behaviour of a combustor in the flameless combustion regime. Previous experimental and numerical studies showed that heat loss is prominent for this setup. Here, the amount of heat loss through the combustor walls is quantified and its effect analysed. For this a non-adiabatic Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) model is employed. This model uses tabulated chemistry in combination with governing equations for a small set of control variables to accurately describe a turbulent flame. In the current implementation, equations for enthalpy and the mean and variance of the reaction progress variable are solved. Turbulence-chemistry interactions are incorporated through a presumed-PDF approach. In contrast to earlier work, the model is applied in the commercial solver Ansys CFX, coupled to a low-mach, compressible, steady-state Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence model. Results from the si... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, diffuser brim, ducted wind turbine, micro wind energy harvester, wind tunnel test
Micro wind energy harvester (MWEH) can provide eco-friendly and sustainable energy for low-power electric devices like wireless sensors. The performance of the wind turbine can be enhanced by applying a duct with a brim. In this work, the characteristic study was performed when the duct is applied to the MWEH through the computational fluid dynamics analysis of the internal and external flow of the duct. The power generation performance for various cases was evaluated using the wind tunnel test. It is confirmed that the ducted MWEH is robust to the change of the wind direction and its performance can be further enhanced by the brim.

Keywords: fault-tolerant, multilevel converter, PV panels, SRM, water pumping system
This paper presents a pumping system supplied by a PV generator that is based on a switched reluctance machine (SRM). Water pumping systems are fundamental in many applications. Most of them can be used only during the day; therefore, they are highly recommended for use with PV generators. For the interface between the PV panels and the motor, a new multilevel converter is proposed. This converter is designed in order to ensure fault-tolerant capability for open switch faults. The converter is based on two three-level inverters, with some extra switches. Moreover, to reduce the number of switches, the converter is designed to provide inverse currents in the motor windings. Due to the characteristics of this motor, the inverse currents do not change the torque direction. In this way, it was possible to obtain an SRM drive with fault-tolerant capability for transistor faults; it is also a low-cost solution, due to the reduced number of switches and drives. These characteristics of fault-... [more]

Keywords: buildings office, buildings retrofitting, economic feasibility, historical buildings, nZEB, TRNSYS
According to the last census of 2019, about two million Italian buildings are more than 100 years old. Building energy retrofitting involves a diverse mix of influencing factors, depending on history, intended use, and construction techniques. This paper aims to assess the energy needs of a historic building by evaluating the variability of climatic conditions and internal loads, as well as the thermal capacity of the building envelope. The energy analysis was conducted using dynamic simulation systems (TRNSYS). The purpose of the study is to provide an analysis of the current energy conditions of the building to identify the main critical issues and suggest the most suitable interventions to be implemented. All the transformations were conducted to meet the nZEB requirements and evaluate technical and economic feasibility, compatibility with architectural and landscape constraints, and large-scale replicability. Specifically, to reach the proposed targets, a 36 kWp PV system was imple... [more]
Reliability Optimization of Multi-Energy System Considering Energy Storage Devices Effects under Weather Uncertainties
Ziyan Liao, Alessandra Parisio
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy storage configuration schemes, metaheuristic algorithms, multi-energy system, reliability evaluation and optimization, sequential Monte Carlo simulation, uncertainty modeling
Multi-energy systems (MES) allow various energy forms, such as electricity, gas, and heat, to interact and achieve energy transfer and mutually benefit, reducing the probability of load cutting in the event of a failure, increasing the energy utilization efficiency, and improving the reliability and robustness of the overall energy supply system. Since energy storage systems can help to restore power in the case of failure and store the surplus energy to enhance the flexibility of MES, this work provides a methodology for reliability optimization, considering different energy storage configuration schemes under weather uncertainties. First of all, a reliability evaluation model of a multi-energy system under weather uncertainties based on a sequential Monte Carlo simulation is established. Then, the reliability optimization problem is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem to minimize the reliability index, SAIDI (system average interruption duration index), and the relia... Keywords: multi-branch model, RC model, supercapacitors, two-branch model
Supercapacitors are energy storage devices with high electrical power densities and long spanlife. Therefore, supercapacitor-based energy storage systems have been employed for a variety of applications. The modelling and simulation of SCs have been of great interest to this objective. This paper presents an electrical schema and mathematical modelling of three models of supercapacitors. The first is the RC model, the second is the two-branch model and the third is the multi-branch model. The objective of this modelling is to choose the best model that can respect the same behaviour of the experimental model. These models are compared with an experimental model. This comparison prove that the response voltage of the multi-branch model correctly describes the behaviour of the experimental model of Belhachemi. The disadvantage of this model is the slow simulation duration in MATLAB/Simulink. The RC model represented the faster model in terms of simulation. The choice of 15 branches in pa... [more]

In the case of road cars, road safety is the primary factor. The geometry of high-speed road cars has no regulatory restrictions. In addition to the high engine power and effective shape, they can use various types of additional movable aerodynamic elements to adjust their aerodynamic characteristics to the road conditions. Based on the geometry of a two-seater prototype of such a vehicle, a numerical analysis of the influence of a number of additional movable aerodynamic elements on its aerodynamic characteristics was performed. Several of them were installed on the prototype. An electronic system recording a number of motion parameters of the entire car body and some of its movable elements installed on the body was designed and built. The system has been adapted to program the motion of additional aerodynamic elements according to the set algorithms of their activation, temporarily changing the aerodynamic characteristics of the car. Keywords: electricity market, loss management, peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity trading, transaction guide
In this study, we examined the impacts of peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity trading on the power losses in the network, which is one of the objectives optimized in the centralized approach. For this purpose, we reviewed the conventional loss management schemes and suggested the requirements to be considered in the design of P2P electricity trading. Then, we described a new loss management framework for P2P transactions and introduced the concept of the transaction guide. Based on the proposed framework, we simulated the P2P transactions with and without the transaction guide and examined the variation in the network losses. Three noteworthy remarks are derived from the simulation in this paper. First, the random characteristics of P2P trading itself do not guarantee favorable transaction ordering in terms of network losses, but when the new loss management framework is applied, the network losses can be effectively decreased. Second, through the new loss management framework, loss costs c... [more]

Keywords: computational efficiency, dynamic equivalents, partial Y-bus factorization, transient stability simulation, ward equivalents
This paper presents a partial Y-bus factorization algorithm to reduce the size of a power system model for transient stability analysis. In the proposed approach, steady-state operating conditions for dynamic equivalents are maintained using the traditional Ward admittance method. Fictitious generators are attached at boundary buses to preserve transient behavior following a disturbance. The equivalent dynamic effects from eliminated generators can be maintained by choosing appropriate dynamic parameters of fictitious generators, including machine inertia, transient reactance, and the damping coefficient. Parameters are determined using the idea that the contributions from external generators mostly depend on the network configuration and impedance characterized by the Y-bus matrix. The fictitious generators’ dynamic parameters are determined by conducting partial Y-bus factorization on dynamic parameter matrices. The proposed method’s performance is validated by conducting case studie... [more]

The purpose of this study is to determine Girona Cathedral’s thermal performance and to verify that it is suitable for containing historical pieces of art. We present the results of our analysis of the indoor thermal conditions during the period from January 2011 to December 2016. Real data were collected from strategically located probes inside the cathedral and from an outside weather station. The results were compared with an EnergyPlus computer model to verify the calculations and improve decision making. The model considers the envelope’s thermal inertia, the characteristics of the enclosure, and the passive systems for performing thermal analysis. The cathedral’s indoor environment is very stable. Because of a high capability of thermal-energy accumulation, a one-month thermal lag between indoor and outdoor temperatures exists. Furthermore, the maximum and minimum temperatures are dampened, with a two-degree variation above or below the outdoor average, depending on the season. T... [more]
