A Novel Denoising Auto-Encoder-Based Approach for Non-Intrusive Residential Load Monitoring
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: denoising auto-encoder, load disaggregation, Machine Learning, REDD dataset, TraceBase dataset
Mounting concerns pertaining to energy efficiency have led to the research of load monitoring. By Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM), detailed information regarding the electric energy consumed by each appliance per day or per hour can be formed. The accuracy of the previous residential load monitoring approach relies heavily on the data acquisition frequency of the energy meters. It brings high overall cost issues, and furthermore, the differentiating algorithm becomes much more complicated. Based on this, we proposed a novel non-Intrusive residential load disaggregation method that only depends on the regular data acquisition speed of active power measurements. Additionally, this approach brings some novelties to the traditionally used denoising Auto-Encoder (dAE), i.e., the reconfiguration of the overlapping parts of the sliding windows. The median filter is used for the data processing of the overlapping window. Two datasets, i.e., the Reference Energy Disaggregation Dataset (RED... [more]

A Deep Learning Method Based on Bidirectional WaveNet for Voltage Sag State Estimation via Limited Monitors in Power System
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bidirectional WaveNet, deep learning, power quality, state estimation, voltage sag
Voltage sag state estimation on the basis of a limited number of installed monitors is essential to dividing the responsibility for the voltage sag and taking corresponding measurements for improvement in voltage quality. Therefore, a deep learning methodology via bidirectional WaveNet for the voltage sag state estimation is proposed in this paper. The presented method can simultaneously estimate voltage sag state at non-monitored buses via limited monitors. Especially, the proposed deep learning method using the bidirectional WaveNet is designed to explore the long-term and long-range temporal dependencies in both the forward and backward directions. In this way, only by using original measured voltages through monitors, high accuracy for voltage sag state estimation can be achieved without restructured or redesign of the raw monitored data. An excellent advantage of the presented algorithm is that it can be implemented without system parameters or operating conditions or any other pr... [more]

Modeling Temporal Dependence of Average Surface Treating Pressure in the Williston Basin Using Dynamic Multivariate Regression
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic multivariate regression, Machine Learning, novel diagnostic methodologies, re-fracturing, stress shadow, temporal dependence, treating pressure
The oil and gas industry has shifted paradigms after seeing the drastic decrease in oil prices since 2015. Companies are now focused as much on cost reduction as much as production maximization to drive profitable operations. This aspect is more prevalent in unconventional plays with the need for long horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing (HF) operations to develop and produce from the tight reservoirs. There exists an optimum point between the costs of HF treatment and the expected production. Because of the paradigm shift, many operators are now focused on re-developing existing assets at much lower costs instead of developing newer, more costly assets. Re-fracturing existing wells provides an opportunity for companies to add economical wells to their portfolio. Re-fracturing consists of pumping HF treatments in wells that were previously drilled and completed. Although it may seem that the HF process on a well would be easier the second time around, this is not always the cas... [more]

Modeling of Thermal Traces Using Fractional Order, a Discrete, Memory-Efficient Model
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 2D heat transfer, CFE approximation, fractional order state equation, initial problem, non integer order systems, thermal camera, thermal trace
In the paper, the problem of modeling of thermal traces is addressed. The proposed model allows prediction of the behaviour of a thermal mark left by a warm body on cooler ground. In the model, a fractional order (FO) approach is employed. This allows consideration of an inital function (not only a condition in one, initial time instant). The proposed model uses a scalar FO differential equation approximated with the use of Continuous Fraction Expansion (CFE) approximation. This allows maintenance of a relatively small size of the model with good accuracy in the sense of a Mean Square Error (MSE) cost function. Experimental verification confirms good accuracy of the proposed model in modeling of thermal traces.

A Digital Twin Approach for Improving Estimation Accuracy in Dynamic Thermal Rating of Transmission Lines
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: data-driven, digital twin, dynamic thermal line rating, estimation, forecasting
The limitation of transmission lines thermal capacity plays a crucial role in the safety and reliability of power systems. Dynamic thermal line rating approaches aim to estimate the transmission line’s temperature and assess its compliance with the limitations above. Existing physics-based standards estimate the temperature based on environment and line conditions measured by several sensors. This manuscript shows that estimation accuracy can be improved by adopting a data-driven Digital Twin approach. The proposed method exploits machine learning by learning the input−output relation between the physical sensors data and the actual conductor temperature, serving as a digital equivalent to physics-based standards. An experimental assessment on real data, comparing the proposed approach with the IEEE 738 standard, shows a reduction of 60% of the Root Mean Squared Error and a decrease in the maximum estimation error from above 10 °C to below 7 °C. These preliminary results suggest that t... [more]

Development of a Trajectory Period Folding Method for Burnup Calculations
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: burnup, linear chain, MCB, period folding, transformation, transmutation
In this paper, we present a trajectory period folding method for numerical modelling of nuclear transformations. The method uses the linear chain method, commonly applied for modelling of isotopic changes in matter. The developed method folds two consecutive periods of time and forms linear chain representations. In the same way as in the linear chain method, the mass flow of straight nuclide-to-nuclide transitions following the formation of nuclide transmutation chains in every step is considered over the total period of interest. Therefore, all quantitative data about the isotopic transformations for the period beyond a particular calculation step are preserved. Moreover, it is possible to investigate the formation history of any isotope from the beginning of irradiation to the arbitrary time step, including cooling periods and multi-recycling for any designed nuclear fuel cycle. We present a case study for the transition from 238U to 239Pu and define the properties of the developed... [more]

An Hour-Ahead PV Power Forecasting Method Based on an RNN-LSTM Model for Three Different PV Plants
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: deep learning, hour-ahead prediction, PV power forecasting, RNN-LSTM
Incorporating solar energy into a grid necessitates an accurate power production forecast for photovoltaic (PV) facilities. In this research, output PV power was predicted at an hour ahead on yearly basis for three different PV plants based on polycrystalline (p-si), monocrystalline (m-si), and thin-film (a-si) technologies over a four-year period. Wind speed, module temperature, ambiance, and solar irradiation were among the input characteristics taken into account. Each PV plant power output was the output parameter. A deep learning method (RNN-LSTM) was developed and evaluated against existing techniques to forecast the PV output power of the selected PV plant. The proposed technique was compared with regression (GPR, GPR (PCA)), hybrid ANFIS (grid partitioning, subtractive clustering and FCM) and machine learning (ANN, SVR, SVR (PCA)) methods. Furthermore, different LSTM structures were also investigated, with recurrent neural networks (RNN) based on 2019 data to determine the best... [more]

The Influence of Different Operating Conditions on the Support Bracket Stress in Pumped Storage Units
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, pressure balance pipeline, pump-turbine, runner axial force
In order to balance the intermittent supply of energy to the power grid, pumped storage units have to operate more and more in extended operating conditions and switch their mode frequently. During operation, the turbine unit has to withstand various axial forces that may cause deformation and fatigue damage to the key components of the machine. The excessive load could surpass the weight of the runner body, which is dangerous for the power plant. For the safe and stable operation, the simulation of the axial force under pump condition is performed by the computational fluid dynamics method (CFD) in this paper. The CFD simulation result has revealed the variation rule of the axial force with the operating condition. Besides, the conditions with pressure-balance pipelines (PBP) blockage are also investigated and the mechanism of PBP on reducing the axial force applied on the bracket has been revealed. The maximum stresses are calculated by means of Finite Element Method (FEM) and compar... [more]

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of a Surface Sliding Discharge in a Supersonic Flow with an Oblique Shock Wave
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: high-speed shadowgraphy, nanosecond surface sliding discharge, numerical simulation, oblique shock wave, plasma actuator, supersonic flow
This study presents an experimental and numerical investigation on a surface sliding discharge in a supersonic airflow in the presence of an oblique shock wave. In experiments, flow Mach numbers were 1.20−1.68 in the shock tube combined with the discharge chamber. A single high-voltage 25 kV pulse sustains the plasma; the discharge current has a duration of ~500 ns. A surface sliding discharge is developed as a localized channel in a zone of interaction of an oblique shock wave with a boundary layer on the upper wall of the discharge chamber. The discharge channel acts as a linear source of heat and is at the origin of the induced shock wave. The flow field in the discharge chamber is spatio-temporally surveyed using high-speed shadowgraphy imaging with a frequency of up to 525,000 frames per second. The experiments show that the perturbed flow restored the initial structure after more than 100 μs. Numerical simulation with local energy input into the supersonic flow in a flat channel... [more]

Numerical Simulation on the Structural Design of a Multi-Pore Water Diffuser during the External Ice Melting Process of an Ice Storage System
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: external ice melting system, heat transfer, ice storage system, VOF method, water diffuser
A water diffuser is a critical auxiliary equipment for an ice storage system during the external ice melting process. This paper proposes a linear multi-pore water diffuser for an ice storage system with 500 t of refrigeration capacity to enhance the performance of external ice melting. By establishing a three-dimensional two-phase volume of fluid (VOF) model, different structural designs of water diffusers for the ice storage device are numerically examined regarding the degree of turbulence, flow velocity, and pressure drop. The results show that the optimal water diffuser with five rows of trunk pipe and six perforated pores arranged in per row of branch pipe with a 4 mm diameter of perforated pores exhibiting a relatively lower degree of turbulence with a lower pressure drop compared with the other designs in this study. Meanwhile, the influence of the flow velocity on the ice melting process is also investigated by a numerical model of ice melting. It is found that the fed flow ve... [more]

Effects of Hydrogeological Heterogeneity on CO2 Migration and Mineral Trapping: 3D Reactive Transport Modeling of Geological CO2 Storage in the Mt. Simon Sandstone, Indiana, USA
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: geochemical reactions, geological CO2 storage, hydrogeological heterogeneity, reactive transport simulation
We used three-dimensional (3D), high-resolution simulations facilitated by parallel computation to assess the effect of hydrogeological heterogeneity in the Mt. Simon Sandstone on CO2 plume evolution and storage and geochemical reactions in a portion of the Illinois Basin, Indiana. Two scenarios were selected to investigate the effects of the hydrogeological heterogeneity in 3D reactive transport simulations: a heterogeneous case with variable porosity and permeability, and a homogenous case with constant porosity and permeability. The initial pressure, temperature, and mineralogical distributions are consistently applied in both the heterogeneous case and the homogeneous case. Results indicate that including hydrogeological heterogeneity in 3D reservoir simulations for geological CO2 storage significantly impacts modeling results for plume migration patterns, CO2-water-mineral interaction, reservoir quality, and CO2 plume containment. In particular, results indicate that (1) the CO2 p... [more]

Low-Carrier-Ratio Modulation Strategy Based on Improved Flux Ripple Model
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: current ripple suppression, improved flux ripple model, low-carrier-ratio modulation strategy, SPMSM
Since the quality of the direct and quadrature axis current (dq-axis) is an important performance indicator of a motor, the technique of flux ripple analysis is necessary to determine the appropriate working conditions for various voltage sequences and reduce current fluctuations. However, the traditional flux ripple model cannot analyze dq-axis flux ripples (except under no-load conditions). Therefore, it is unable to calculate the modulation ratio and voltage angle (angle between the reference vector and the q-axis) ranges to satisfy the given q-axis (or d-axis) current fluctuation requirement based on this model. To solve this problem, in this paper, we derived an improved flux ripple model by applying coordinate transformation to the traditional flux ripple model, which can be used to calculate the RMS (root mean square) value of the q-axis and the total flux ripple distribution within sector I under different modulation ratios and voltage angle ranges. The modulation ratio and vol... [more]

Modeling Residential Electricity Consumption from Public Demographic Data for Sustainable Cities
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: demographic data, energy transitions, information management, residential sector, smart cities
Demographic factors, statistical information, and technological innovation are prominent factors shaping energy transitions in the residential sector. Explaining these energy transitions requires combining insights from the disciplines investigating these factors. The existing literature is not consistent in identifying these factors, nor in proposing how they can be combined. In this paper, three contributions are made by combining the key demographic factors of households to estimate household energy consumption. Firstly, a mathematical formula is developed by considering the demographic determinants that influence energy consumption, such as the number of persons per household, median age, occupancy rate, households with children, and number of bedrooms per household. Secondly, a geographical position algorithm is proposed to identify the geographical locations of households. Thirdly, the derived formula is validated by collecting demographic factors of five statistical regions from... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Archie’s law, lattice Boltzmann simulation, microfluidic experiments, porous media imaging, reactive transport modelling
Reactive transport modelling is a powerful tool to assess subsurface evolution in various energy-related applications. Upscaling, i.e., accounting for pore scale heterogeneities into larger scale analyses, remains one of the biggest challenges of reactive transport modelling. Pore scale simulations capturing the evolutions of the porous media over a wide range of Peclet and Damköhler number in combination with machine learning are foreseen as an efficient methodology for upscaling. However, the accuracy of these pore scale models needs to be tested against experiments. In this work, we developed a lab on a chip experiment with a novel micromodel design combined with operando confocal Raman spectroscopy, to monitor the evolution of porous media undergoing coupled mineral dissolution and precipitation processes due to diffusive reactive fluxes. The 3D-imaging of the porous media combined with pore scale modelling enabled the derivation of upscaled transport parameters. The chemical react... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: alternative wind technology, capture value, Compressed Air Energy Storage, generation integrated energy storage, intake swept volumes, optimal operation of energy stores, underwater compressed air energy storage, wind system simulation, wind-driven air compression, wind-integrated energy storage
The increasing push for renewable penetration into electricity grids will inevitably lead to an increased requirement for grid-scale energy storage at multiple time scales. It will, necessarily, lead to a higher proportion of the total energy consumed having been passed through storage. Offshore wind is a key technology for renewable penetration, and the co-location of energy storage with this wind power provides significant benefits. A novel generation-integrated energy storage system is described here in the form of a wind-driven air compressor feeding underwater compressed air energy storage. A direct drive compressor would require very high intake swept volumes. To overcome this difficulty, some prior compression is introduced. This paper discusses the constituent technologies for this concept, as well as the various configurations that it might take and the logic behind operating it. Impact of Local Emergency Demand Response Programs on the Operation of Electricity and Gas Systems
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: congestion management, demand response modeling, Hydrogen, integrated gas and electricity networks operation, local emergency demand response
With increasing attention to climate change, the penetration level of renewable energy sources (RES) in the electricity network is increasing. Due to the intermittency of RES, gas-fired power plants could play a significant role in backing up the RES in order to maintain the supply−demand balance. As a result, the interaction between gas and power networks are significantly increasing. On the other hand, due to the increase in peak demand (e.g., electrification of heat), network operators are willing to execute demand response programs (DRPs) to improve congestion management and reduce costs. In this context, modeling and optimal implementation of DRPs in proportion to the demand is one of the main issues for gas and power network operators. In this paper, an emergency demand response program (EDRP) is implemented locally to reduce the congestion of transmission lines and gas pipelines more efficiently. Additionally, the effects of optimal implementation of local emergency demand respo... [more]

To analyze the internal flow and impeller deformation of the centrifugal pump, the single-stage single-suction centrifugal pump titled IS100-80-160 was selected as the research object. Under the principle of single variable, the turbulent flow and structural response of three impellers designed by different parameters were calculated by CFX and ANSYS Workbench. A numerical simulation of steady flow at different flow rates of the centrifugal pump was carried out, and its hydraulic performance is consistent with the corresponding experimental results. By comparing the deformation of the impeller rotor system, it was found that the closed impeller has the worst stability with the best hydraulic performance; the impeller with split blades has the worst stability with the... Simulation of a Low-Voltage Direct Current System Using T-SFCL to Enhance Low Voltage Ride through Capability
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: distributed energy resource, low voltage direct current, low voltage ride-through, trigger type superconducting fault current limiter
Owing to the increasing penetration level of distributed energy resources (DER) and direct current (DC) load, the usage of low-voltage direct current (LVDC) systems has expanded to achieve efficient operations. However, because the LVDC system reaches the peak fault current at a faster rate than the alternating current (AC) system, a solution that protects the system components is necessary to maintain system integrity. It is required by the low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) that the DERs maintain their interconnections with the LVDC system and support fault recovery. In this study, a method is proposed to allow the application of the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) to reduce the fault current and enhance the LVRT capability. However, when the DER maintain a connection to support fault recovery, the conventional resistive-type SFCL must withstand the burden of high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) operation during fault state dependence on LVRT. High-Voltage Isolated Multiple Output Auxiliary Power Supply with Output Voltage Self-Regulation
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: auxiliary power supply (APS), current source topology, current transformers, high-voltage isolation, multiple outputs, output voltage self-regulation
Power electronic transformers (PETs) have high voltage isolation requirements and a large number of modules, which requires the auxiliary power supply (APS) to achieve high voltage isolation and multiple outputs. This paper proposes a parameter optimization method for the current source APS applied to PETs, enabling the APS to have multiple output voltage self-regulation capabilities. By optimizing the excitation inductance and leakage inductance for the current transformer of the APS, the excitation current plays a regulating role in energy transmission, thus realizing the self-regulation of the output voltages. The proposed method enables the voltage deviation and voltage change of the output modules to be suppressed under the unbalanced loads and large load fluctuations. Moreover, the APS can still operate normally when a short-circuit or an open-circuit fault occurs on the output sides.
