Partial Discharge Diagnostics: Data Cleaning and Feature Extraction
Donny Soh, Sivaneasan Bala Krishnan, Jacob Abraham, Lai Kai Xian, Tseng King Jet, Jimmy Fu Yongyi
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condition monitoring, denoising, feature extraction, Machine Learning, partial discharge, PRPD
Detection of partial discharge (PD) in switchgears requires extensive data collection and time-consuming analyses. Data from real live operational environments pose great challenges in the development of robust and efficient detection algorithms due to overlapping PDs and the strong presence of random white noise. This paper presents a novel approach using clustering for data cleaning and feature extraction of phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) plots derived from live operational data. A total of 452 PRPD 2D plots collected from distribution substations over a six-month period were used to test the proposed technique. The output of the clustering technique is evaluated on different types of machine learning classification techniques and the accuracy is compared using balanced accuracy score. The proposed technique extends the measurement abilities of a portable PD measurement tool for diagnostics of switchgear condition, helping utilities to quickly detect potential PD activities... Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, high fidelity simulations, horizontal axis wind turbine, multiple reference frame, sliding mesh interface, wind energy
The reliance on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations has drastically increased over time to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of small-scale wind turbines. With the rapid variability in customer demand, industrial requirements, economic constraints, and time limitations associated with the design and development of small-scale wind turbines, the trade-off between computational resources and the simulation’s numerical accuracy may vary significantly. In the context of wind turbine design and analysis, high fidelity simulation under full geometric and numerical complexity is more accurate but pose significant demands from a computational standpoint. There is a need to understand and quantify performance deterioration of high fidelity simulations under reduced geometric or numerical approximation on a single small scale turbine model. In the present work, the flow past a small-scale Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) was simulated under various geometric and numerical config... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ac loss, ac resistance, edge effect, finite element method (FEM), rectangular conductors, skin effect, white-box modeling
This paper presents an accurate quasi-analytical approximation of frequency-dependent ac resistance of single rectangular conductors. In this work, first, a two-dimensional analytical ac resistance of rectangular conductors is derived. Unlike circular conductors, where current density distributes evenly in each layer of the conductor’s cross-section, the edge effect is involved for rectangular conductors. Due to the edge effect, one cannot define an accurate boundary condition for solving the two-dimensional partial differential equation of magnetic field or current density of rectangular conductors. Hence, the calculated two-dimensional analytical current density result is not accurate and is modified and fitted on FEM simulation, taking the conductor’s thickness into account using the least-square problem to improve its accuracy. Unlike numerical approaches, the proposed method yields an easy-to-use formula applicable to industrial applications in different fields. Contrary to the on... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agent-based simulation, bidding strategies, electricity markets, flexibility, interrelated markets
Power markets are becoming increasingly complex as they move towards (i) integrating higher amounts of variable renewable energy, (ii) shorter trading intervals and lead times, (iii) stronger interdependencies between related markets, and (iv) increasing energy system integration. For designing them appropriately, an enhanced understanding of the dynamics in interrelated short-term physical power and energy markets is required, which can be supported by market simulations. In this paper, we present an agent-based power market simulation model with rule-based bidding strategies that addresses the above-mentioned challenges, and represents market participants individually with a high level of technical detail. By allowing agents to participate in several interrelated markets, such as the energy-only market, a procurement platform for control reserve and a local heat market representing district heating systems, cross-market opportunity costs are well reflected. With this approach, we wer... [more]
Selected Mathematical Models Describing Flow in Gas Pipelines
Andrzej J. Osiadacz, Marta Gburzyńska
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas networks simulation, lumped models, mathematical modeling
The main aim of simulation programs is to study the behavior of gas pipe networks in certain conditions. Solving a specified set of differential equations describing transient (unsteady) flow in a gas pipeline for the adopted parameters of load and supply will help us find out the value of pressure or flow rate at selected points or along selected sections of the network. Transient gas flow may be described by a set of simple or partial differential equations classified as hyperbolic or parabolic. Derivation of the mathematical model of transient gas flow involves certain simplifications, of which one-dimensional flow is most important. It is very important to determine the conditions of pipeline/transmission network operation in which the hyperbolic model and the parabolic model, respectively, should be used. Parabolic models can be solved numerically in a much simpler way and can be used to design simulation programs which allow us to calculate the network of any structure and any nu... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Comprehensive Dynamic Time Warping (CDTW) distance, faulty line selection, flexible grounding system, single-phase grounding fault, transient projection method
A flexible grounding system is a system in which the neutral point of the power supply is grounded via the arc suppression coil in parallel with a low-resistance resistor. When operating normally or a temporary ground fault occurs, the arc suppression coil is used for grounding, whereas the small resistance is switched on when a permanent ground fault occurs. At present, the problem of low protection sensitivity when a high-resistance ground fault occurs in a flexible grounding system has not been solved yet. According to the characteristics of low waveform similarity between the faulty line and the non-faulty line when a single-phase grounding fault occurred, a new faulty line selection method based on a combination of Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) distance and the transient projection method is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the fault transient signal is extracted by a digital filter as a basis for faulty line selection. Secondly, the transient zero-sequence current of each line is pr... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, electricity price, energy consumption cost, GPU-based cluster, inference, job allocation, training
Expanding the scale of GPU-based deep learning (DL) clusters would bring not only accelerated AI services but also significant energy consumption costs. In this paper, we propose a cost efficient deep learning job allocation (CE-DLA) approach minimizing the energy consumption cost for the DL cluster operation while guaranteeing the performance requirements of user requests. To do this, we first categorize the DL jobs into two classes: training jobs and inference jobs. Through the architecture-agnostic modeling, our CE-DLA approach is able to conduct the delicate mapping of heterogeneous DL jobs to GPU computing nodes. Second, we design the electricity price-aware DL job allocation so as to minimize the energy consumption cost of the cluster. We show that our approach efficiently avoids the peak-rate time slots of the GPU computing nodes by using the sophisticated mixed-integer nonlinear problem (MINLP) formulation. We additionally integrate the dynamic right-sizing (DRS) method with ou... [more]
A Boussinesq-Type Model for Nonlinear Wave-Heaving Cylinder Interaction
Theofanis Karambas, Eva Loukogeorgaki
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Boussinesq model, heaving cylinder, nonlinear wave-floating cylinder interaction
In the present work, a Boussinesq-type numerical model is developed for the simulation of nonlinear wave-heaving cylinder interaction. The wave model is able to describe the propagation of fully dispersive and weakly nonlinear waves over any finite water depth. The wave-cylinder interaction is taken into account by solving simultaneously an elliptic equation that determines the pressure exerted by the fluid on the floating body. The heave motion for the partially immersed floating cylinder under the action of waves is obtained by solving numerically the body’s equation of motion in the z direction based on Newton’s law. The developed model is applied for the case of a fixed and a free-floating circular cylinder under the action of regular waves, as well as for a free-floating cylinder undergoing a forced motion in heave. Results (heave and surge exciting forces, heave motions, and wave elevation) are compared with those obtained using a frequency domain numerical model, which is based... [more]

Keywords: Machine Learning, RoD strategy mechanisms, smart buildings, Wi-Fi networks, WLAN energy saving mechanism
As wireless local area networks grow in size to provide access to users, power consumption becomes an important issue. Power savings in a large-scale Wi-Fi network, with low impact to user service, is undoubtedly desired. In this work, we propose and evaluate the eSCIFI energy saving mechanism for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). eSCIFI is an energy saving mechanism that uses machine learning algorithms as occupancy demand estimators. The eSCIFI mechanism is designed to cope with a broader range of WLANs, which includes Wi-Fi networks such as the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) SCIFI network. The eSCIFI can cope with WLANs that cannot acquire data in a real time manner and/or possess a limited CPU power. The eSCIFI design also includes two clustering algorithms, named cSCIFI and cSCIFI+, that help to guarantee the network’s coverage. eSCIFI uses those network clusters and machine learning predictions as input features to an energy state decision algorithm that then decides whi... Diagnosis for Slight Bearing Fault in Induction Motor Based on Combination of Selective Features and Machine Learning
Hisahide Nakamura, Yukio Mizuno
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bearing fault, diagnosis, Machine Learning, motor current signature analysis (MCSA)
Induction motors are widely used in industry and are essential to industrial processes. The faults in motors lead to high repair costs and cause financial losses resulting from unexpected downtime. Early detection of faults in induction motors has become necessary and critical in reducing costs. Most motor faults are caused by bearing failure. Machine learning-based diagnostic methods are proposed in this study. These methods use effective features. First, load currents of healthy and faulty motors are measured while the rotating speed is changing continuously. Second, experiments revealed the relationship between the magnitude of the amplitude of specific signals and the rotating speed, and the rotating speed is treated as a new feature. Third, machine learning-based diagnoses are conducted. Finally, the effectiveness of machine learning-based diagnostic methods is verified using experimental data.

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: catalytic combustion, heat recuperator, numerical simulation, reactor design
The catalytic combustion has the advantage of lower auto-ignition temperature and helps to expand the combustible limit of lean premixed gas. However, the intake needs to be preheated to certain temperature commonly through an independent heat exchanger. Similar to the principles of non-catalytic RTO combustion, this paper presents a similar approach whereby the combustion chamber is replaced by a catalytic combustion bed. A new catalytic reactor integrated with a heat recuperator is designed to enhance the heat recirculation effect. Using a two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model, the performance of the reactor is studied. The reaction performances of the traditional and compact reactors are compared and analyzed. Under the same conditions, the compact reactor has better reaction performance and heat recirculation effect, which can effectively decrease the ignition temperature of feed gas. The influences of the inlet velocity, the inlet temperature, the methane concentratio... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chlorine, computation fluid dynamics (CFD), homogeneous reaction, mercury, utility boiler
The homogeneous oxidation of elemental mercury (Hg0) can promote Hg pollution control in coal-fired power plants, while the mechanisms and quantitative contributions of homogeneous reactions in Hg0 oxidation, especially the reactions between Hg and chlorine (Cl), are still unclear. Here, a numerical study on the homogeneous reactions of Hg was conducted within a 600 MW tangentially fired boiler for the first time. A novel Hg sub-model was established by coupling the thermodynamics, reaction kinetics and fluid dynamics. The results showed that the higher Cl content in coal was beneficial to the oxidation of Hg0. The homogeneous reactions of Hg mainly occurred in the vertical flue pass at low temperature. Hg0 was still the dominant Hg-containing species at the boiler exit, and the concentration of mercury chloride (HgCl2) was the highest among the oxidized mercury. When low-Cl coal was fired, the addition of a small amount of chlorine species into the boiler at the burnout area increased... [more]

Keywords: bio-colonization, Dynamic Bayesian Network, monopile, offshore, reliability updating, underwater inspection
Marine growth is a known problem for oceanic infrastructure and has been shown to negatively impact the reliability of bottom-fixed or floating offshore structures submitted to fatigue or extreme loading. Among other effects, it has been shown to change drag forces by increasing member diameters and modifying the roughness. Bio-colonization being highly random, the objective of this paper is to show how one-site inspection data increases reliability by decreasing uncertainties. This can be introduced in a reliability-based inspection framework for optimizing inspection and maintenance (here, cleaning). The modeling and computation are illustrated through the reliability analysis of a monopile in the European Atlantic area subjected to marine growth and according to the plastic collapse limit state. Based on surveys of structures in the North Sea, long-term stochastic modeling (space and time) of the marine growth thickness is first suggested. A Dynamic Bayesian Network is then develope... March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: high-order-cumulant, impulse noise, partial discharge, pulse segmentation
As one of the most effective methods to detect the partial discharge (PD) of transformers, high frequency PD detection has been widely used. However, this method also has a bottleneck problem; the biggest problem is the mixed pulse interference under the fixed length sampling. Therefore, this paper focuses on the study of a new pulse segmentation technology, which can separate the partial discharge pulse from the sampling signal containing impulse noise so as to suppress the interference of pulse noise. Based on the characteristics of the high-order-cumulant variation at the rising edge of the pulse signal, a method for judging the starting and ending time of the pulse based on the high-order-cumulant is designed, which can accurately extract the partial discharge pulse from the original data. Simulation results show that the location accuracy of the proposed method can reach 94.67% without stationary noise. The field test shows that the extraction rate of the PD analog signal can reac... March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, explosion characteristics, fluid properties, turbulence intensity
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to investigate the explosion characteristics of a Mg/air mixture in a 20 L apparatus via an Euler−Lagrange method. Various fluid properties, namely pressure field, velocity field, turbulence intensity, and the degree of particle dispersion, were obtained and analyzed. The simulation results suggested that the best delayed ignition time was 60 ms after dust dispersion, which was consistent with the optimum delayed ignition time adopted by experimental apparatus. These results indicate that the simulated Mg particles were evenly diffused in the 20 L apparatus under the effect of the turbulence. The simulations also reveal that the pressure development in the explosion system can be divided into the pressure rising stage, the maximum pressure stage, and pressure attenuation stage. The relative error of the maximum explosion pressure between the simulation and the experiments is approximately 1.04%. The explosion model provides reliable and usefu... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finned tube arrangement, LNG ambient air vaporizers, wind load
The article presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the wind action on liquefied natural gas (LNG) ambient air vaporizers (AAVs). A study concerning AAV with a 6 × 6 tubes array is presented to demonstrate how the distribution of longitudinal finned tubes and wind direction affect the average load and wind pressure acting on the vaporizer structure. The main goal of the study is to estimate the wind load on the structure and wind pressure on individual tubes depending on the pitch of the tubes arrangement. The above parameters are crucial for the strength analysis of the vaporizer structure. The derived analysis results provide important data on the variation of pressure on individual tubes, wind velocity inside AVV structure and indicate a significant increase in the average wind load acting on the structure for a wind direction of 45 degrees compared to a perpendicular direction.

Keywords: antenna miniaturization, constrained optimization, EM-driven design, multi-fidelity simulations, penalty coefficients, surface mount design (SMD)
The growing demand for the integration of surface mount design (SMD) antennas into miniaturized electronic devices has imposed increasing limitations on the structure dimensions. Examples include embedded antennas in applications such as on-board devices, picosatellites, 5G communications, or implantable and wearable devices. The demands for size reduction while ensuring a satisfactory level of electrical and field performance can be managed through constrained numerical optimization. The reliability of optimization-based size reduction requires utilization of full-wave electromagnetic (EM) analysis, which entails significant computational costs. This can be alleviated by incorporating surrogate modeling techniques, adjoint sensitivities, or the employment of sparse sensitivity updates. An alternative is the incorporation of multi-fidelity simulation models, normally limited to two levels, low and high resolution. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for accelerated antenna miniaturiz... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computational fluid dynamic (CFD), elliptical drill pipe, hole cleaning, horizontal well, numerical study
In the drilling of horizontal wells, the drill cuttings tend to settle down on the low side of the annulus due to gravity and form a stationary bed, which results in hole cleaning problems. In this paper, a novel type of drillpipe with an elliptical shape was proposed to alleviate inadequate hole cleaning during the drilling of horizontal wells. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) Eulerian-Eulerian approach with the Realizable k-ɛ turbulence model was developed to predict the solid−liquid two-phase flow in the annular space. Numerical examples were given to investigate the influence of different parameters on cuttings’ transport behavior, and the elliptical drillpipe was compared with the circular drillpipe. The annular cuttings concentration, annular pressure drop, and hole cleaning efficiency were evaluated. The numerical results clarify the potential of the elliptical drillpipe to enhance the hole cleaning efficiency without significantly increasing the annular pre... [more]

Energy-economic simulation models with high levels of detail, high time resolutions, or large populations (e.g., distribution networks, households, electric vehicles, energy communities) are often limited due to their computational complexity. This paper introduces a novel methodology, combining cluster-based time series aggregation and sampling methods, to efficiently emulate simulation models using machine learning and significantly reduce both simulation and training time. Machine learning-based emulation models require sufficient and high-quality data to generalize the dataset. Since simulations are computationally complex, their maximum number is limited. Sampling methods come into play when selecting the best parameters for a limited number of simulations ex ante. This paper introduces and compares multiple sampling methods on three energy-economic datasets and shows their advantage over a simple random sampling for small sample-sizes. The results show that a k-means cluster samp... [more]

Keywords: electro-mechanical interaction, Modelling, two-way coupling, wind energy
Generators in wind turbines are the key components to convert mechanical into electrical power. They are subject to electrical and mechanical excitation at the same time, which can cause electro-mechanical interactions. To avoid unwanted interactions, standard design approaches use conservative, stiff designs that lead to heavy generators of several hundred tons. New wind turbine designs, beyond 10 MW, need to revisit the conservative design approach as the tower top mass needs to be limited. To reduce the generator’s mass without large deformation that can damage the wind turbine, a better understanding of electro-mechanical interactions is key. This requires a detailed model including both the mechanical and the magnetic forces. This work presents a numerical setup of a coupled electromagnetic-structural multi-body model. While existing couplings are application-specific; the presented coupling is independent of the actual use case and allows for transient dynamic two-way coupled ana... [more]

Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) is one of the most promising solutions among the low temperature combustion concepts, in terms of thermal efficiency and pollutant emissions. However, for values of brake mean effective pressure higher than 10 bar, in-cylinder peak pressure rise rates tend to be too high, limiting the specific power of any 4-Stroke (4S) engine. Such a limitation can be canceled by moving to the 2-Stroke (2S) cycle. Among many alternatives, the “Uniflow” scavenging system with exhaust poppet valves on the cylinder head allows the designer to reproduce the same identical combustion patterns of a 4-stroke RCCI engine, while increasing the indicated power output. The goal of the paper is to explore the potential of a 2-stroke RCCI engine, on the basis of a comprehensive experimental campaign carried out on a modified automotive 2.0 L, 4-stroke, four-cylinder, four-valve diesel engine. The developed prototype can run with one cylinder operating in 4-stroke R... [more]
