Microscopic Conductivity Mechanism and Saturation Evaluation of Tight Sandstone Reservoirs: A Case Study from Bonan Oilfield, China
Jianmeng Sun, Ping Feng, Peng Chi, Weichao Yan
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: numerical simulation, pore structure, resistivity, saturation, tight sandstone
Core samples of the tight sandstone reservoir in the Bonan Oilfield were analyzed by using multiple petrophysical experimental techniques, then a multi-scale three-dimensional digital rock model was constructed. The pore structure parameters of tight sandstone and homogeneous Berea sandstone were compared. The electrical simulation method based on the digital rock model was utilized to quantitatively reveal the influence of five micro-pore structure parameters (pore size, throat size, pore-throat size, coordination number, and shape factor) on the rock’s electrical properties. In addition, the saturation of tight sandstone reservoirs was evaluated in combination with the three-component automatic mixed-connection conductivity model. The results show that the “non-Archie” phenomenon in sandstone is obvious, which is mainly caused by the small radius of the maximum connected pore throat and the complex structure of the pore throat. We noted that: with an increase in pore radius, throat r... [more]
Modeling and Design of High-Power Enhanced Leakage-Inductance-Integrated Medium-Frequency Transformers for DAB Converters
Xinsheng Zhang, Fei Xiao, Ruitian Wang, Wei Kang, Beichao Yang
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DAB converter, inductor integration, medium-frequency transformer, optimal design
For dual active bridge (DAB) converters, integrating the phase-shifting inductance (PSI) in the medium-frequency transformer (MFT) is an effective way to improve the overall power density. Different from the existing leakage-inductance-integrated (LII) structure, a concentric-winding (CW) enhanced leakage-inductance-integrated (ELII) structure, which includes an additional core, is proposed in this paper. In order to explain the operating mode of CW ELII MFT, a magnetic circuit model is established, and the analysis is carried out under the typical DAB excitation. The total leakage inductance of CW ELII MFT is divided into the winding leakage inductance and the additional leakage inductance for calculation. The integrated structure makes the heat dissipation of the MFT challenging. Therefore, the air−water combined cooling method is adopted in the design. A thermal resistance model is built for the winding air channel under forced convection. On this basis, MFT designs with different i... [more]

Meifang Wei, Youyue Deng, Min Long, Yahui Wang, Yong Li
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy transaction, multi-energy microgrid, smart contract, Stackelberg game
To improve the coordination and complementarity of multiple energy sources, balancing the interests of different participants in a multi-energy system is of great importance. However, traditional centralized optimization can hardly reflect the game relationship between supply side and demand sides. A trading model based on the Stackelberg game model is proposed in this paper to balance the interests of the supply side and demand side and reduce the carbon emissions. First of all, the process of trading between the supply side and demand side based on smart contracts is described. A contractual consensus is obtained through an internal game, and the transaction is completed automatically. Secondly, a bilevel optimization model is established to coordinate the benefits of both parties based on the Stackelberg game model. The energy operator acts as a leader, and considers the two objectives, i.e., maximizing net income and minimizing carbon emissions, and uses the linear weighting method... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aeroacoustics, axial fan, Computational Fluid Dynamics, fan noise, sensitivity, URANS
The noise generated by different types of fans used in the turbomachinery industry is a topic that has been studied for many years. However, researchers are still looking for a universal solution to reduce noise while maintaining the performance of these machines. This paper, as a contribution to the research, presents the results of numerical investigations of an axial fan installed in a pipeline with a circular cross-section. In particular, the focus was on investigating the sensitivity of the sound power level to changes in selected design and operational parameters of this fan. The simulation studies used the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (URANS) approach and the Ffowcs Williams−Hawkings (FW-H) analogy implemented in Ansys Fluent.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrified vehicle, thermal management, thermal modeling, thermal optimization
Vehicle electrification demands a deep analysis of the thermal problems in order to increase vehicle efficiency and battery life and performance. An efficient thermal management of an electrified vehicle has to involve every system of the vehicle. However, it is not sufficient to optimize the thermal behavior of each subsystem, but thermal management has to be considered at system level to optimize the global performance of the vehicle. The present paper provides an organic review of the current aspects of thermal management from a system engineering perspective. Starting from the definition of the requirements and targets of the thermal management system, each vehicle subsystem is analyzed and related to the whole system. In this framework, problems referring to modeling, simulation and optimization are considered and discussed. The current technological challenges and developments in thermal management are highlighted at vehicle and component levels.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ensemble prediction system, Machine Learning, numerical weather prediction, quantile regression, solar power forecast, support vector regression
Although the recent development of solar power forecasting through machine learning approaches, such as the machine learning models based on numerical weather prediction (NWP) data, has been remarkable, their extreme error requires an increase in the amount of reserve capacity procurement used for the power system safety. Hence, a reduction of the serious overestimation is necessary for efficient grid operation. However, despite the importance of the above issue, few studies have focused on the model design, suppressing serious errors, to the best of the authors’ knowledge. This study investigates a prediction model that can reduce the huge overestimation of the solar irradiance, which poses a risk to the power system. The specific approaches used are as follows: the employment of Support Vector Quantile Regression (SVQR), the utilization of Meso-scale Ensemble Prediction System (MEPS, Meso-scale EPS for the regions of Japan) data, which is based on the forecasts from Meso-scale Model... Learning-Aided Optimal Power Flow Based Fast Total Transfer Capability Calculation
Ji’ang Liu, Youbo Liu, Gao Qiu, Xiao Shao
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, interior point method, surrogate assisted method, total transfer capability, transient stability
Total transfer capability (TTC) is a vital security indicator for power exchange among areas. It characterizes time-variants and transient stability dynamics, and thus is challenging to evaluate efficiently, which can jeopardize operational safety. A leaning-aided optimal power flow method is proposed to handle the above challenges. At the outset, deep learning (DL) is utilized to globally establish real-time transient stability estimators in parametric space, such that the dimensionality of dynamic simulators can be reduced. The computationally intensive transient stability constraints in TTC calculation and their sensitivities are therewith converted into fast forward and backward processes. The DL-aided constrained model is finally solved by nonlinear programming. The numerical results on the modified IEEE 39-bus system demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms several model-based methods in accuracy and efficiency.

Keywords: crystalline rock, discrete fracture network, faulted basement, flow properties, fracture network properties, geothermal reservoirs, heat storage reservoirs, structural analogues, Upper Rhine Graben
Fracture network is a crucial element to address in any model of the thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of a reservoir rock. This study aims to provide quantified datasets and a further understanding of the critical parameters of the fracture network pattern in crystalline rocks. In the Northern Upper Rhine Graben, such rock units are targeted for multiple energy applications, from deep geothermal heat extraction to heat storage. Eleven outcrops were investigated with a combined LiDAR and 2D profiles analysis to extract faults and fracture network geometrical parameters, including length distribution, orientation, connectivity, and topology. These properties are used to decipher the structural architecture and estimate the flow properties of crystalline units. Fracture networks show a multi-scale power-law behaviour for length distribution. Fracture topology and orientation are mainly driven by both fault networks and lithology. Fracture apertures and permeability tensors were then calc... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AQWA simulation, heave plate, model test, Wave Energy
The development and utilization of wave energy is inseparable from the wave energy converter, and its stability is an important condition for operation. Heave is the biggest factor affecting the stable power generation of wave energy converters. The key method to solve this problem is to install a suitable heave plate. Therefore, the design of the heave plate is particularly important. Based on a new type of horizontal rotor wave energy converter, this paper proposes three different shapes of heave plate design schemes and completes the calculation and modeling of the engineering prototype. First, the three types of heave plate devices were numerically simulated using hydrodynamic calculation software to compare their stable performances and verify the feasibility of the scheme. Subsequently, an experimental model was made according to the parameters of the engineering prototype, and a tank experiment was carried out under the same working conditions to further study the influence of t... Keywords: electromagnetic geophysical, high-order methods, HPC, numerical simulations, tailored meshes
We introduce a new synthetic marine model for 3D controlled-source electromagnetic method (CSEM) surveys. The proposed model includes relevant features for the electromagnetic geophysical community such as large conductivity contrast with vertical transverse isotropy and a complex bathymetry profile. In this paper, we present the experimental setup and several 3D CSEM simulations in the presence of a resistivity unit denoting a hydrocarbon reservoir. We employ a parallel and high-order vector finite element routine to perform the CSEM simulations. By using tailored meshes, several scenarios are simulated to assess the influence of the reservoir unit presence on the electromagnetic responses. Our numerical assessment confirms that resistivity unit strongly influences the amplitude and phase of the electromagnetic measurements. We investigate the code performance for the solution of fundamental frequencies on high-performance computing architectures. Here, excellent performance ratios ar... [more]

Keywords: building energy saving solutions, building energy simulation, Machine Learning, optimisation algorithms
Accurate prediction of building energy need plays a fundamental role in building design, despite the high computational cost to search for optimal energy saving solutions. An important advancement in the reduction of computational time could come from the application of machine learning models to circumvent energy simulations. With the goal of drastically limiting the number of simulations, in this paper we investigate the regression performance of different machine learning models, i.e., Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, and Extreme Gradient Boosting, trained on a small data-set of energy simulations performed on a case study building. Among the XX algorithms, the tree-based Extreme Gradient Boosting showed the best performance. Overall, we find that machine learning methods offer efficient and interpretable solutions, that could help academics and professionals in shaping better design strategies, informed by feature importance.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical solution, peak-to-average-power ratio, power lines communication, selected mapping
Nowadays, the demand for communication multi-carriers’ channels, where the sub-channels are made mutually independent by using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), is widespread both for wireless and wired communication systems. Even if OFDM is a spectrally efficient modulation scheme, due to the allowed number of subcarriers, high data rate, and good coverage, the transmitted signal can present high peak values in the time domain, due to inverse fast Fourier transform operations. This gives rise to high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) with respect to single carrier systems. These peaks can saturate the transmitting amplifiers, modifying the shape of the OFDM symbol and affecting its information content, and they give rise to electromagnetic compatibility issues for the surrounding electric devices. In this paper, a closed form PAPR reduction algorithm is proposed, which belongs to selected mapping (SLM) methods. These methods consist in shifting the phases of the comp... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bidirectional fluid-structure interaction, computational fluid dynamic, high-speed supercavitating projectiles, motion characteristics, structural response effect, tail-slap motion
High-speed supercavitating projectiles receive tremendous hydrodynamic force when flying underwater in tail-slap mode, and have obvious structural deformation and structural vibration. To study the motion characteristics of high-speed supercavitating projectiles, a bidirectional fluid-structure interaction model was established, and validated by comparing with the existing results. The motion, supercavitation flow field, and structural deformation response process of a supercavitating projectile were numerically investigated under the conditions of initial speed within 800−1600 m/s. It was found that the tail-slap motion of high-speed supercavitating projectiles is correlated with a high-frequency structural vibration. Further, the amplitude of the structural vibration increases with the initial speed. When flying with an initial speed higher than 1200 m/s, supercavitating projectiles encounter a great structural deformation under the action of the huge hydrodynamic load, which exerts... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic mesh, hydrodynamic performance, shut-off condition, slanted axial-flow pump, sluice gate
Increasing extreme rainfall events caused by global climate change have had a significant impact on urban drainage systems. As a critical component of a pumping station, a large-scale slanted axial-flow pump (SAFP) featuring high specific speed plays a critical role in mitigating urban flooding and waterlogging. In this study, to reveal the transient characteristics of a SAFP at shut-off conditions, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based approach with dynamic mesh was proposed. Multiple shut-off conditions with various shut-down speeds of the sluice gate (SG) were modeled. Our analysis demonstrated that both the shut-off conditions and the slanted structure have conspicuous impacts on the hydrodynamic performance of a SAFP. Reducing the shut-down speed leads to a greater reverse flow rate and higher runner speed. The water hammer effect was simulated with different shut-down speeds, increasing the water head by 5.07−10.42 m, the axial force by 163.46−297.06 kN∙m, and the axial mome... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DDPM-KTGF, erosion modelling, erosion reduction, gas–solid two-phase flow, Rosin–Rammler distribution
The purpose of the present study is to simulate the continuous bend erosion process in different directions, using the dense discrete particle model (DDPM). The influence of the length of the straight pipe in the middle of the continuous bend is investigated. The Rosin−Rammler method is introduced to define the diameter distribution of erosion particles, which is theoretically closer to the actual engineering erosion situation. The numerical model is based on the Euler−Lagrange method, in which the continuous phase and the particle phase are established on a fixed Euler grid. The Lagrange model is used to track the particles, and the interaction between particles is simulated by particle flow mechanics theory. The velocity field distribution, pressure variation, and turbulent kinetic energy of gas−solid two-phase flow, composed of natural gas and gravel in the pipeline, are studied. The simulation results, using the one-way coupled DPM and the four-way coupled DDPM, are compared and an... [more]

Abdullah S. Aloqlah, Mohammad Alhawari
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: average behavioral model, charge pump dynamics, circuit modeling, DC–DC converter, Dickson charge pump, energy harvesting, resistor network, steady-state analysis
This paper presents a new average behavioral model, named a resistor-network (RN) model, that accurately predicts the electrical characteristics of the Dickson charge pump (DCP) circuit in the slow-switching limit and the fast-switching limit regions based on steady-state analysis. The RN model describes the steady-state behavior of a single-stage DCP using a network of resistors, which can then be cascaded to model N-stage DCP, taking into account the top- and bottom-plate parasitic capacitances. The RN model provides a comprehensive insight into various design parameters of the DCP, including the input/output current, output voltage, load characteristics, losses caused by parasitics, and power efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed RN model accurately predicts the output voltage and power efficiency of the DCP over a wide range of switching frequencies, from 0.1 Hz to 1 GHz, with an error of less than 2% at the maximum power efficiency. The RN model provides designers... [more]

Keywords: 5R1C model, bypass, EAHE, EAHX, earth-to-air heat exchanger, EN 16798-5, EN ISO 13790, ground temperature, outlet air temperature
The earth-to-air heat exchanger (EAHE) is a well-founded and verified solution used in modern buildings both for heating and cooling purposes around the world. However, there is a lack of studies on operation of such devices cooperating with ventilation systems of buildings in hourly time step. In this study, the 5R1C thermal network model of a building from EN ISO 13790 was coupled with the EAHE model from EN 16798-5-1 to calculate hourly outlet air temperature. To improve the effectiveness of the considered solution, an additional algorithm was developed to choose between the EAHE outlet and ambient air as the source of ventilation air. Simulations were conducted in a spreadsheet for a low-energy single-family building. Ground temperature was compared with measurements taken in the considered location. The application of the EAHE with the proposed bypass resulted in a decrease in annual energy use for space heating and cooling from 14.82 GJ and 1.67 GJ to 12.74 GJ and 0.93 GJ, i.e.,... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), heterogeneous forest, homogeneous forest, leaf area density (LAD), Leaf Area Index (LAI), wind energy, wind-turbine wake
This work aims at investigating the effects of forest heterogeneity on a wind-turbine wake under a neutrally stratified condition. Three types of forests, homogeneous (idealized), a real forest having natural heterogeneity, and an idealized forest having a strong heterogeneity, are considered in this study. For each type, three forest densities with Leaf Area Index (LAI) values of 0.42,1.7, and 4.25 are investigated. The data of the homogeneous forest are estimated from a dense forest site located in Ryningsnäs, Sweden, while the real forest data are obtained using an aerial LiDAR scan over a site located in Pihtipudas, about 140 km north of Jyväskylä, Finland. The idealized forest is made up of small forest patches to represent a strong heterogeneous forest. The turbine definition used to model the wake is the NREL 5 MW reference wind turbine, which is modeled in the numerical simulations by the Actuator Line Model (ALM) approach. The numerical simulations are implemented with OpenFOA... [more]

This paper presents the electrical system factors having an influence on the work efficiency and performance of the LC passive harmonic filters (PHFs). Such filters are very often used in industries for the purpose of harmonics mitigation and reactive power compensation. Before their installation in the electrical system, many investigations should be performed in order to ensure their good design as well as work efficiency after connection. In this paper, the factors having an influence on the PHFs work efficiency and performance, such as the grid short-circuit power, primary grid voltage spectrum (voltage measured at the PCC before the filter connection), load reactive power and current characteristic harmonics, manufacturer filter parameters tolerance and filter-detuning phenomena are investigated. Most of the quoted factors are mentioned in the literature, but the novelty of this paper is that, based on the case study example of the single-tuned filter investigated in the laborator... [more]

The mathematical remodelling of a few of their principal ideas is taken into consideration, despite being neglected in the literature. To emphasize these ideas in an appropriate epistemological order, it would be crucial to first revalue and reconstruct some underrepresented parts of the proceedings process through which Duhem and Natanson created their thermodynamics. Duhem and Natanson’s scientific works are against the background of modern continuum mechanics, presenting relevant approaches. In line with the long-held beliefs of many French and Polish researchers, the article mentions that Duhem and Natanson’s ideas dated back to one century ago. Both scientists were qualified in the same Royal Way, which in this case includes chemistry, mechanic of fluid and solid, electro-chemistry, thermodynamics, electrodynamics, and relativistic and quantum mechanics.... Keywords: anti-aircraft cannon barrel, heat transfer, Modelling, numerical simulation, temperature field
The results of numerical simulations of transient heat transfer in the barrel wall of a 35 mm caliber cannon for a single shot and the sequences of seven shots and sixty shots for chosen barrel steels are presented. It was assumed that the cannon barrel was made of one of the three types of steel: 38HMJ (1.8509), 30HN2MFA and DUPLEX (1.4462). To model the thermal phenomena in the barrel, the barrel wall material was assumed to be homogeneous and the inner surface of the barrel had no protective chromium or nitride layer. The calculations were made for temperature-dependent thermophysical parameters, i.e., thermal conductivity, specific heat and thermal expansion (in the range from RT up to 1000 °C) of the selected barrel steels. A barrel with a total length of 3150 mm was divided into 6 zones (i = 1, …, 6) and in each of them, the heat flux density was calculated as a function of time q˙i(t) on the inner surface of the barrel. Using lumped parameter methods, an internal ballistic code... [more]

The demand for heating in cold regions drives up carbon emissions every year. In order to achieve China’s carbon neutrality target by 2060, CO2 emissions in the cold regions must be reduced. In this paper, using Design Builder software, a simulation model of residential buildings in severe cold regions was created, and the most appropriate parameter design scheme for carbon emission reduction of residential buildings in severe cold regions was derived by simulating the experimental data of the original parameter design scheme and the changed parameter design scheme, as well as the calculation of carbon dioxide emission reduction rate. In order to make the comparison of the results easier, no change was made in the selection of the changed scheme for the external insulation material, foamed polystyrene panels. The results show that the most suitable parameter scheme for houses in severe cold regions is 85 mm thick foamed polystyrene panels for exterior walls, 200 mm thick foamed polysty... [more]

Keywords: approximate entropy, CPS, cyber–physical system, deep learning, energy harvesting, Lyapunov control, magnetic levitation, nonlinear control, nonlinear system
This paper presents a novel dynamic deep learning architecture integrated with Lyapunov control to address the timing latency and constraints of deep learning. The dynamic component permits the network depth to increase or decrease depending on the system complexity/nonlinearity evaluated through the parameterized complexity method. A correlation study between the parameter tuning effect on the error is also made thus causing a reduction in the deep learning time requirement and computational cost during the network training and retraining process. The control Lyapunov function is utilized as an input cost function to the DNN in order to determine the system stability. A relearning process is triggered to account for the introduction of disturbances or unknown model dynamics, therefore, eliminating the need for an observer-based approach. The introduction of the relearning process also allows the algorithm to be applicable to a wider array of cyber−physical systems (CPS). The intellige... [more]
