February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogeneration system, desalination, heat utilization, membrane flux, PV/T, vacuum membrane distillation
In this paper, an integrated system based on low-concentrated photovoltaic/thermal (LCPV/T) technology and efficient vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) seawater desalination utilizing the energy of solar is established. Through a theoretical analysis and a series of experiments, this paper explores the temperature change of a single VMD process, and the variation trend of single-day membrane flux with solar irradiation and temperature parameters. In addition, the changes in solar irradiation, temperatures of the integrated system, membrane flux, and thermoelectric properties in different seasons are also analyzed. A mathematical model was established to calculate the relationship between membrane flux and temperature difference. The experimental results show that the membrane flux of VMD is 2.73 L/(m2·h); the simulated seawater can achieve a desalination rate of 99.9%. After economic analysis, the operating incomes of the system under sunny weather conditions in different seasons were... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cooling tower, dry and wet mixing operation, engineering plastic, freeze protection, solar system
A cooling tower is an important guarantee for the proper operation of a solar system. To ensure proper operation of the system and to maintain high-efficiency points, the cooling tower must operate year-round. However, freezing is a common problem that degrades the performance of cooling towers in winter. For example, the air inlet forms hanging ice, which clogs the air path, and the coil in closed cooling towers freezes and cracks, leading to water leakage in the internal circulation. This has become an intractable problem that affects the safety and performance of cooling systems in winter. To address this problem, three methods of freeze protection for cooling towers are studied: (a) the dry and wet mixing operation method—the method of selecting heat exchangers under dry operation at different environments and inlet water temperatures is presented. The numerical experiment shows that the dry and wet mixing operation method can effectively avoid ice hanging on the air inlet. (b) The... [more]

Denis Anatolievich Ustinov, Ershat Rashitovich Shafhatov
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emissions reduction, diesel generators, offshore wind turbines, uninterrupted power supply system, wave energy converters
Marine renewable sources can make a significant contribution to the development of electrical energy generation and can increase the power supply reliability of mineral complexes. The development of alternative energy sources is happening at a fast pace, and this is due to the improvement of technologies that allow for generating more energy and operating in more extreme conditions, with almost no negative effect on the environment. However, currently, renewable sources are not able to meet all the energy requirements of the platforms. Hence, a key point is to gradually introduce and develop new technologies. This article explores the advantages of combining power generation by wave converters and offshore wind turbines. It investigates the possibilities of improving the combined systems’ reliabilities through justification of their mutual topology and accounting for the shadow effect from the wave installations.

Sharmarke Hassan, Mahmoud Dhimish
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anti-reflecting coating, anti-soiling coating, photovoltaic systems, PV solar roads
The objective of this review paper is to provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art in solar road deployment, including the availability of anti-reflection and anti-soiling coating materials for photovoltaic (PV) technology. Solar roads are built using embedded PV panels that convert sunlight into electricity, which can be stored for later use. Prototypes of solar roads have been tested on various continents, but the lack of suitable PV materials has limited their effectiveness compared to conventional PV systems. By analyzing the existing literature on solar roads and PV materials, including anti-reflection and anti-soiling coatings, we aim to identify gaps in knowledge and propose an action plan to improve the resiliency, durability, and reliability of PV panels in solar road applications. This will enable the deployment of solar roads as a clean, renewable energy source.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: methane concentration, natural gas hydrate, open-circuit drilling, trial, wellhead monitoring
Natural gas hydrate is easy to decompose and leak due to the changes in temperature and pressure during drilling, which causes safety accidents. Early monitoring of wellhead overflow is a practical and effective measure to prevent overflow blowouts and other accidents. Herein, a wellhead methane monitoring system for the open-circuit drilling of marine natural gas was designed. The system consisted of an overwater acoustic reception part and an underwater self-contained methane monitoring part, matching the construction environment of marine natural gas hydrate exploitation. Compared with the existing gas logging technology (measurement while drilling), the monitoring and early warning of wellhead methane content were realized at all stages of drilling, casing running, cementing, completion and fracturing in the process of natural gas hydrate exploitation. System communication and data acquisition tests were completed at different water depths through sea trials, which verified the eff... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery aging, charging infrastructures, EV charging, PV and battery integration
The increasingly widespread use of electric vehicles requires proper planning of the charging infrastructure. In addition to the correct identification of the optimal positions, this concerns the accurate sizing of the charging station with respect to energy needs and the management of power flows. In particular, if we consider the presence of a renewable energy source and a storage system, we can identify strategies to maximize the use of renewable energy, minimizing the purchase costs from the grid. This study uses real charging data for some public stations, which include “normal” chargers (3 kW and 7 kW) and “quick” ones (43 kW and 55 kW), for the optimal sizing of a photovoltaic system with stationary storage. Battery degradation due to use is included in the evaluation of the overall running costs of the station. In this study, two different cost models for battery degradation and their influence on energy flow management are compared, along with their impact on battery life.

Saeed Rubaiee, M. A. Fazal
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical efficiency, PCM, photovoltaic system, solar radiation, ZnO powder
The thermal regulation of a silicon photovoltaic (PV) solar system is essential as the module surface temperature beyond 25 °C deteriorates its Power Conversion Efficiency (PCE). The intensity of solar radiation seems to have a crucial impact on the PCE of a PV solar system. The present study aims to assess the effect of solar radiation variations on the PCEs of PV modules integrated with and without passive cooling systems. The used passive cooling systems are (a) multi-pipe copper frame filled with Phase Change Material (PCM) and (b) multi-pipe copper frame filled with ZnO-doped PCM. The tests were conducted at the University of Jeddah in the month of March at various local times. The results show that the ambient and module surface temperatures are directly dominated by solar radiations. The conventional PV solar system presents a higher module surface temperature as compared to that of a PV system integrated with ZnO/PCM. The enhanced module surface temperature decreases the open c... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acceptance requirements, performance index, power system, power system stabilizer
The subject of the article is issues related to innovative indices for power system stabilizers (PSSs). These new indices will be able to quickly show which PSS (among many other PSSs) is not working properly and that advanced optimization and simulation methods should be used to improve the PSS settings. The authors note the fact that the acceptance requirements for PSSs are different in various power systems. Moreover, the authors pay attention to the fact that transmission system operators (TSOs) often have different PSS requirements (tests) even though they work in the same large power system. The article reviews the requirements for the PSSs used by TSOs of various power systems. The need to supplement the required tests with new qualitative indices is demonstrated. In the paper, new performance indices are proposed to improve the evaluation of the PSS and to check the desired performance of the stabilizer. These indices are derived from the active power frequency response charact... [more]

Keywords: Coats–Redfern, DAEM, gasification, organic solid waste, TGA
The gasification kinetics of pellets obtained from organic solid wastes (OWS) and raw materials were studied using the Coats−Redfern and DAEM methods. The different methods were comparatively analyzed for mutual verification, and the similar activation energies obtained by each method affirmed the accuracy of the kinetics calculation. Overall, the activation energies of the char gasification stage ranged from 200 to 265 kJ mol−1, higher than those of the devolatilization stage, which ranged from 130 to 200 kJ mol−1 for all pellets and raw materials. During the devolatilization stage, the activation energies of the pellets were invariably higher than those of their corresponding raw materials, which was the opposite for the char gasification stage. A detailed comparison between the calculation results from the Coats−Redfern and DAEM methods confirmed that the devolatilization stage is controlled by one-dimensional diffusion, and the gasification stage is controlled by two-dimensional or... Grzegorz Koszalka, Paweł Krzaczek
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blow-by, cylinder, Energy Efficiency, friction, IC engine, piston, ring, wear
Decreasing production and rising prices of cars, especially those with electric drive, lead to longer use of cars with internal combustion engines. It can be assumed that in the future, more and more cars powered by such engines with high mileage and therefore high wear will be used. Engine wear leads to reduced efficiency and increased emissions. This paper analyzes the impact of wear of the piston−rings−cylinder system components on energy losses associated with gas leakage from the combustion chamber and friction of the rings against the cylinder liner in a car spark-ignition engine. A ring pack model was used for the analyses. The input data for the simulation were gained in measurements made on the engine test stand and measurements of the wear of the engine components used in the car. The energy losses associated with blow-by in an unworn engine ranged from 1.5% of the indicated work at high load to almost 5% at low load. In the engine after 300,000 km, these losses increased to... [more]

Igor Petruška, Eva Litavcová, Jana Chovancová
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emissions, economic growth, energy consumption, Nuclear, renewables
The aim of this work is to analyse the dependence of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions on total energy consumption, the energy produced from renewable sources, the energy produced in nuclear power plants and the gross domestic product (GDP) in 22 European countries, over the period 1992−2019. The fully modified ordinary least squares model (FMOLS) and dynamic OLS (DOLS) were used to estimate the long-term cointegration relationship between the variables. First differenced (FD) general moments methods (GMM) were used in the estimation of short-run relationship dynamics. The results suggest that energy produced from renewable sources causes a reduction in CO2 emissions per capita. On the other hand, total energy consumption increases CO2 emissions in the long run. Although the mitigation effect of nuclear power was not found to be significant across the entire block of countries studied, a closer look at countries utilising nuclear energy reveals that nuclear energy positively affects the r... Keywords: Hydrogen, offshore wind, power-to-ammonia, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Green ammonia has potential as a zero-emissions energy vector in applications such as energy storage, transmission and distribution, and zero-emissions transportation. Renewable energy such as offshore wind energy has been proposed to power its production. This paper designed and analyzed an on-land small-scale power-to-ammonia (P2A) production system with a target nominal output of 15 tonnes of ammonia per day, which will use an 8 MW offshore turbine system off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada as the main power source. The P2A system consists of a reverse osmosis system, a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser, a hydrogen storage tank, a nitrogen generator, a set of compressors and heat exchangers, an autothermal Haber-Bosch reactor, and an ammonia storage tank. The system uses an electrical grid as a back-up for when the wind energy is insufficient as the process assumes a steady state. Two scenarios were analyzed with Scenario 1 producing a steady state of 15 tonnes of ammonia... [more]

Keywords: blade battery, inhomogeneity, lithium-ion battery, structural optimization, thermoelectric coupling model
To improve the energy density of lithium-ion battery packs, lithium-ion batteries are gradually advancing towards large-size structures, which has become one of the dominant development trends in the battery industry. With large-size blade lithium-ion batteries as the research object, this paper develops a high-precision electro-thermal coupling model based on the relevant parameters obtained through basic performance experiments, explores the mechanism of battery inhomogeneity from a simulation perspective, and further proposes a design management method. First of all, the optimal intervals of capacity and temperature, as well as the characteristics of the inhomogeneity distribution for large-size cells, are determined by essential performance and inhomogeneity tests; subsequently, the electrochemical and thermal characteristics of the large-size battery are described precisely through a 3D thermoelectric coupling mechanism model, and the inhomogeneity of the temperature distribution... Keywords: demand side management, energy access, hybrid renewable energy sources, rural healthcare
Quality in healthcare service is essential in giving rural dwellers a good standard of living. It has been established that many rural locations in Sub-Saharan Africa away from the grid connection have difficulty accessing electricity. The inaccessibility of reliable energy and essential medical equipment was the leading barrier to improved healthcare delivery in these rural locations. The deficiency of basic medical equipment to power essential services due to limited or unreliable electricity access has reduced rural healthcare workers’ care capabilities, resulting in higher mortality rates. This paper, therefore, reviews the existing energy solutions for rural healthcare facilities, thereby analysing different approaches and the geographical energy mix and ascertaining the effectiveness of various techniques and energy mix as solutions to effective healthcare delivery in healthcare centres. Hybrid Renewable Energy Sources (HRES) microsystems, like microgrids incorporated with solar... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DLN combustor, multi-nozzle coupling, multi-premix modules, numerical simulation, PIV investigation
A dry, low-NOx (DLN) combustor for a heavy-duty gas turbine using lean premixed technology was studied. A high-fidelity test model was built for the experimental study using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The non-reacting flow in the DLN combustion chamber was investigated experimentally and numerically. The numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The results show that recirculation zones were formed downstream of each swirl nozzle and that the flow pattern in each section was self-similar under different working conditions. For two adjacent swirl nozzles with opposite swirling directions, the entrainment phenomenon was present between their two flows. The two flows gradually mixed with each other and obtained a higher speed. If the two adjacent swirl nozzles had the same swirling direction, then the mixing of the two flows out of the nozzles was not present, resulting in two separate downstream recirculation zones. The interaction of swirling flows out o... [more]

Keywords: battery-supported eCook, clean cooking, cooking energy cost, fuel stacking, low-and-middle-income countries, mini-grids
Cooking with electricity (eCook) in low-and-middle-income developing countries is still an expensive option compared to using conventional fuels such as charcoal and firewood, so there is a need to identify solutions to make it affordable for all in line with the targets of SDG7. The initial aim of this paper is to understand and provide a comparative analysis of the cooking energy costs through a range of contextualized cooking scenarios—when cooking either with conventional fuels (e.g., charcoal, firewood) or with eCook appliances (e.g., electric pressure cookers (EPC) or hotplates), that are connected to and supplied from an integrated or portable battery (eCook battery). The cooking cost for the eCook cooking scenarios is assessed with and without fuel stacking where a degree of eCook exists alongside other conventional fuels. These studies offer a more realistic concept of the cooking practice to characterize the best fit for cooking scenarios and the main factors required to clos... [more]

Keywords: large-diameter pile, low-strain integrity testing, three-dimensional effect, velocity response
The low-strain integrity testing of large-diameter piles has attracted more and more attention because of its wide application in offshore engineering, such as for wind turbines, etc. Body and Rayleigh waves generate on the top surface of large-diameter piles after the excitation load. The multi-reflections of these waves from the pile side result in the obvious three-dimensional effect at the pile top. Therefore, one-dimensional wave theory is no longer suitable for interpreting the wave propagation in the pile body under vertical excitation. In this paper, based on the “pile in pile” conception, both the pile and soil were simulated using a three-dimensional continuum model, considering the vertical displacement, to investigate the influence of the three-dimensional effect of the pile-soil system on the vertical dynamic response of large-diameter piles in low-strain integrity testing. The axisymmetric solution to the three-dimensional pile-soil system was obtained, and the rationalit... [more]

Keywords: construction, emissions, machinery, PEMS
In Korea’s air pollutant inventory, construction machinery is a major emission source in the non-road sector. Since 2004, the Korean government has introduced and reinforced emission regulations to reduce the air pollutants emitted from their diesel engines. Since the engine dynamometer test method used in emission regulations has limitations in reflecting emission characteristics under the diverse working conditions of construction machinery, it is necessary to examine the effectiveness of emission regulations and the validity of the emission factors applied as inputs to the air pollutants inventory. This could be done by evaluating engine operation and emission characteristics under real-world working conditions. In this study, 14 units were selected among the excavators, wheel loaders, and forklifts that represent approximately 90% of the registered construction machines in Korea. They were equipped with a portable emission measurement system (PEMS) to measure gaseous emissions and... [more]

Keywords: data desync, differential busbar protection, IEC 61850, process bus
The electrical power system is susceptible to several faults, which can cause the system to malfunction. Among these, the ones that occur in the busbars of substations stand out. The main bus of a substation can concentrate a large amount of power and many derivations to service electrical loads, making it an element of high importance for the reliability of the system. Although the buses have a low incidence of faults, they are considered critical elements of the electrical power system, as their operating output can cause a large number of forced outages. This situation makes the protection of this component of paramount importance. There are currently two widely used bus differential protection techniques: high-impedance and low-impedance bus differential protection. The second technique is more commonly used due to the possibility of sharing current transformers (CTs). However, the high cost and greater requirements for maintenance makes the differential protection of busbars in di... [more]

Keywords: European Union, Hydrogen, prospects, underground storage
The hydrogen economy is one of the possible directions of development for the European Union economy, which in the perspective of 2050, can ensure climate neutrality for the member states. The use of hydrogen in the economy on a larger scale requires the creation of a storage system. Due to the necessary volumes, the best sites for storage are geological structures (salt caverns, oil and gas deposits or aquifers). This article presents an analysis of prospects for large-scale underground hydrogen storage in geological structures. The political conditions for the implementation of the hydrogen economy in the EU Member States were analysed. The European Commission in its documents (e.g., Green Deal) indicates hydrogen as one of the important elements enabling the implementation of a climate-neutral economy. From the perspective of 2050, the analysis of changes and the forecast of energy consumption in the EU indicate an increase in electricity consumption. The expected increase in the pr... [more]
