Keywords: bidirectional DAB–DC/DC converter, constant-current control, fast dynamic performance, off-board EV charging, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Due to the high power density, inherent zero-voltage-switching (ZVS), and high voltage-conversation ratio, the current source-based isolated dual-active-bridge DAB−DC/DC converters are extensively used for charging EVs under constant-current mode. However, the fast dynamic response of an output current is a crucial requirement for dual-active-bridge DC/DC converters operating as a constant-current source. This study proposes a fast current controller (FCC) for tracking the desired output current under various input/output parameter disturbances/variations. The proposed control strategy can ensure a fast transient response with negligible overshoot/undershoot for output current during start-up and when there are variations in the load or input voltage. Furthermore, the dynamic behavior of the current control against change in the reference current value has also been improved. A constant-current-based DAB−DC/DC converter is modeled and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink software and a scaled-... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: design space, electrochemical performance, lithium-ion battery, Si-based anode, theoretical model, volume change
The large volume change of Si has been a roadblock in deploying high-capacity Si-based electrodes in lithium-ion batteries, causing salient structural changes and prominent chemo-mechanical coupled degradation. However, the effects of the volume change of Si-based active materials on the structural parameters have not been fully understood, especially for theoretical prediction through fundamental parameters. In this work, we develop a real-time porosity model featuring volume changes of active materials and electrode dimensions for Si-based anodes, predicting the evolution of porosity and electrode dimensions well through the use of basic electrode parameters. The allowable design space of mass fractions of Si is predicted to be lower than 6% for initial porosity in the range of 26−60% based on the permitted limits of maximum volume change of electrode dimensions and minimum porosity at full lithiation. Subsequently, the effects of changes in porosity and electrode dimensions on the g... [more]

Keywords: fuzzy decision-making, Fuzzy TOPSIS, multi-criteria decision-making, S4 framework, solar energy, solar panel
The demand for electrical energy has increased since the population of and automation in factories have grown. The manufacturing industry has been growing dramatically due to the fast-changing market, so electrical energy for manufacturing processes has increased. As a result, solar energy has been installed to supply electrical energy. Thus, assessing a solar panel company could be a complex task for manufacturing companies that need to assess, install, and operate solar panels when several criteria with different hierarchies from decision-makers are involved. In addition, the stages of a solar panel system could be divided into analysis, installation, operation, and disposal, and all of them must be considered. Thus, the solar panel company must provide a holistic solution for each stage of the solar panel lifespan. This paper provides a fuzzy decision-making approach (Fuzzy TOPSIS) to deal with the assessment of solar companies using the S4 framework in which the sensing, smart, sus... [more]

Keywords: combustion characteristics, exhaust emissions, intake throttling, light-duty diesel engine
Intake throttling has been verified as an effective approach to increase the exhaust temperature of diesel engines, which could benefit the catalytic efficiency aftertreatment. To better understand the influence of intake throttling on the combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions of light-duty diesel engines operating under idle mode, a light-duty diesel engine was experimentally investigated. This study is a follow-on to previous studies on the effect of throttling on light-duty diesel engine exhaust temperatures and emissions. Tests were conducted at a fixed idle speed of 1100 rpm, and the throttle position and intake manifold air pressure (MAP) were varied. The in-cylinder pressure, pressure rise rate, heat release rate (HRR), in-cylinder temperature, exhaust temperature, and regular gaseous emissions were analyzed. The results indicated that under the influence of intake throttling, the MAP decreased from 101 kPa under wide-open-throttle (WOT) conditions to 52.5 kPa under t... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bedding, fracture height growth, hydraulic fracturing, shale reservoir
The distribution of beddings varies greatly in shale reservoirs. The influence of beddings on hydraulic fracture propagation has often been studied using simplified geological models, i.e., uniformly distributed bedding models. However, the propagation processes of hydraulic fractures in shale reservoirs with complicated distributed beddings remains unclear. In this research, an outcrop-data-based bedding model of a continental shale formation in the Ordos Basin, China, is built. A mathematical model for fracture propagation is built using the discrete element method and is then verified by a hydraulic fracturing experiment. Reservoir-scale simulations are employed to investigate the influence of geological factors and engineering factors on fracture geometry. The study finds that beddings have significant inhibitory effects on fracture height growth; hydraulic fractures have difficulty in breaking through zones with densely distributed beddings. If a hydraulic fracture encounters a be... [more]

Keywords: distributed generation, energy community, energy losses, hosting capacity, photovoltaic installation, profitability, prosumer
Future energy markets are foreseen to integrate multiple entities located mainly at the distribution level of the grid so that consumers can participate in energy trading while acting as individual prosumers or by forming energy communities. To ensure the smooth integration of prosumers and satisfy the effective operation of the power distribution systems (PDSs), it is important to fundamentally assess their performance for different grid development scenarios. This paper aims to estimate and compare the hosting capacity (HC) thresholds and profitability for two alternatives: (a) when the PDS experiences rapid growth of scattered individual prosumers with photovoltaic (PV) installations and (b) when prosumers intend to formulate a medium-scale energy community, which is a single source located in one node. Maximization of the profits of decision-makers and maximization of the capacity of the PV generation were set as the two objectives for the optimization tasks. It has been analyzed h... [more]

Keywords: bireflectance, bituminous coal, oxygen gasification, reflectance, underground coal gasification (UCG)
Coal gasification experiments were carried out in a reactor used to simulate underground coal gasification (UCG) processes under ex situ conditions at pressures of 10 and 40 bar. Changes in the optical properties of the organic matter were analyzed and the influence of temperature on coal during the UGC process was subsequently determined. The values of the true maximum reflectance determined for the gasification residue at pressures of 10 and 40 bar, and at distances of 0.75 and 1.75 m, reached a level corresponding to semi-graphite. Furthermore, it was found that the values of the true maximum reflectance and bireflectance decrease with increasing distance from the reactor chamber inlet. In addition, the results show that, regardless of the pressure used during the experiment, the temperature influence on the coal decreased with increasing distance from the reactor chamber inlet. The true temperatures operating during the experiment were higher than those recorded by the thermocouple... [more]

Keywords: ancillary service, data-driven approach, economic analysis, stakeholder, vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
Global automakers are speeding up both the suspension of production of internal combustion engine vehicles and the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) in order to respond to global goals to become carbon-free and energy-efficient. Recently, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology has reached the commercialization stage in Korea. Many studies have mostly discussed profits that an EV owner can make by participating in a regulation program. However, all the stakeholders who are involved with V2G service have not been sufficiently considered. Thus, we propose a novel framework for the economic valuation of V2G in ancillary service. Furthermore, to estimate the available capacity of V2G and find an optimal strategy in order for the V2G service to run, a data-driven approach is proposed in this research. Comprehensive simulation results show the optimal situation requiring the minimum financial support for the EV owner when the V2G-service operator aggregates AC chargers. In addition, promotions... Keywords: automotive storage battery, battery management, EV, HV, SOC, SOH
In constructing a nanogrid for the effective use of renewable energy, such as solar power, the use of storage batteries is considered as a stabilizer for capturing renewable energy and outputting it in an energy-saving manner. Storage batteries that are included in a battery management system that includes their reuse in a vehicle are expected to be discharged into the market in large quantities over their long lifetime. Storage battery modules obtained from an unspecified number of electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid vehicles (HVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs) will vary in their charge/discharge capacity from module to module and it is crucial to determine the stability in terms of the state of charge and the state of health of the modules before their reuse. However, in an automotive storage battery module, multiple battery cells are connected in series or in parallel, and there is no established method of managing the variation in the output of each battery cell. Therefore, in thi... [more]

Keywords: arid-climate regions, ASHRAE, CO2 emissions, energy consumption, indoor operative temperature
Recent evidence available in the literature has highlighted that the high-energy consumption rate associated with air conditioning leads to the undesired “overcooling” condition in arid-climate regions. To this end, this study quantified the effects of increasing the cooling setpoint temperature on reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions to mitigate overcooling. DesignBuilder software was used to simulate the performance of a generic building operating under the currently adopted ASHRAE HVAC criteria. It was found that increasing the cooling setpoint temperature by 1 °C will increase the operative temperature by approximately 0.25 °C and reduce the annual cooling electricity consumption required for each 1 m2 of an occupied area by approximately 8 kWh/year. This accounts for a reduction of 8% in cooling energy consumption compared to the ASHRAE cooling setpoint (i.e., t_s = 26 °C) and a reduction in the annual CO2 emission rate to roughly 4.8 kg/m2 °C. The largest reduction in co... [more]

Renewable energy sources are preferred for many power generation applications. Energy from the wind is one of the fastest-expanding kinds of sustainable energy, and it is essential in preventing potential energy issues in the foreseeable future. One pertinent issue is the many geometrical alterations that the scientific community has suggested to enhance rotor performance features. Hence, to address the challenge of developing a model that resolves these problems, the purpose of this investigation was to determine how well a scaled-down version of a Savonius turbine performed in terms of power output using a wind tunnel. Subsequently, the effect of the blockage ratio produced in the wind tunnel during the chamber test on the scaled model was evaluated. This study discusses the influences of various modified configurations on the turbine blades’ torque and power coefficients (Cp) at various tip speed ratios (TSRs) using three-dimensional (3D) unsteady computational fluid dynamics. Keywords: actors, charging infrastructure industry, electric vehicles, game
China proposed a development direction of “new infrastructure” in 2020, due to the ongoing scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation. The charging station industry is one of the seven industries of the “new infrastructure”. Hence, it is of great importance to study China’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure industry. Based on game theory, this study analyzes the game strategies for the evolution of actors in China’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure industry. Firstly, the Chinese government has classified the industry according to the subsidy for charging piles and battery swapping stations. Then, the government, operators, and consumers constructed an evolutionary game model. The results show that: (1) under the investment subsidy mode, the purchase cost that consumers invest in purchasing traditional fuel-consuming vehicles has a positive impact on the operator’s production enthusiasm. In addition, the government’s subsidy amount has a positiv... [more]

Keywords: global carbon emissions, heterogeneity, influencing factors analysis, process
Against the background that climate warming has become a global challenge, exploring the factors that drive carbon emissions change is important to achieve emission reduction targets. Because of the differences in economic development, resource endowment, and historical accumulation, different countries generally have significant technological heterogeneity in the carbon generation process. Therefore, the heterogeneity-related factors should also be understood, which can help policy making and responsibility attribution more accurate. As such, this study developed a meta-frontier-based production−theoretical decomposition analysis method to track the progress of carbon emission change in 42 countries during 2012−2019 with production heterogeneity between the countries taken into account. The empirical study draws the following three meaningful conclusions: firstly, the carbon emission process of different countries has clear technological heterogeneity, mainly reflected in aspects of t... CVT for a Small Electric Vehicle Using Centrifugal Belt Pulley
Hyung-jin Do, Se-hoon Oh
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: centrifugal belt pulley, efficiency tester, FEM analysis, plate, ratio
In a conventional continuously variable transmission (CVT), the belt slides up and down along the slope of the pulley to shift gears. Efficiency is reduced because of slippage from the shifting of the belt. In this study, the centrifugal belt pulley for CVT were investigated. Instead of applying the belt slip method, a rail groove was machined on the side of the pulley, and a push piece pushed the belt up by centrifugal force along the rail groove. The CVT was designed and manufactured using this mechanism. A CVT tester was manufactured to validate the performance of the proposed transmission. The suitability of the CVT was verified through structural analysis.

Keywords: induction motors, interharmonics, power quality, power system, subharmonics, torsional vibration, vibration, voltage fluctuations
In some power systems, voltage waveforms contain, apart from harmonics, interharmonics and subharmonics that are components of frequency less than or not an integer multiple of the fundamental frequency. Voltage subharmonics and interharmonics may be of both a positive and negative sequence, independently of their frequency. Previous papers on induction motors under subharmonics have been generally limited to the components of a positive sequence. This study deals with the effect of negative sequence subharmonics on the work of induction motors. Investigations were performed using the 2D finite element method and an experimental method. Differences between the impact of positive and negative sequence subharmonics are discussed. It was found that negative sequence voltage subharmonics can result in significant current subharmonics, torque pulsations and vibration. Further, because of possible resonance, motors that are comparatively resistant to positive sequence subharmonics might be e... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy characteristics of buildings, energy consumption, model based on thermal characteristics, public buildings, rough set theory
The study was carried out on a group of 85 public buildings, which differed in type of use, construction technology and heating systems. From the collected data, a set of qualitative and quantitative variables characterizing them in terms of heat demand was extracted. In this paper, the authors undertook to test the suitability of a model based on rough set theory (RST), which allows the analysis of imprecise, general and uncertain data. To obtain input data for the RST model in quantitative form, the authors used an alternative approach, which is a method based on the thermal properties of buildings. The quality of the predictive model was evaluated based on the following indicators, such as the coefficient of determination (R2), the mean bias error (MBE), the coefficient of variance of the root mean square error (CV RMSE) and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), which are accepted as statistical calibration standards by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air... Keywords: energy recovery, microbial electrolysis cell, microbial fuel cell, wastewater treatment
Urban wastewater could be converted into energy if microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) like microbial dual-chamber electrolysis cells (MDEC) or microbial fuel cells (MFC) are applied as a treatment method. Mathematical modelling of MFC and MDEC for wastewater treatment and energy recovery has been developed in this study. The Radaue method has been used to solve ordinary differential equations (ODEs), and the model outputs were successfully validated with previous experimental and modelling data. A case study in Montreal, Canada, has also been considered for testing the application of METs on an urban scale with a total daily wastewater flow of 75,000 L/day. The results show that from 1 m3 of wastewater, MDEC and MFC can generate 0.077 kg H2 and 0.033 kWh, respectively.

Keywords: battery capacity, BMS data, DC charger, electric vehicle, on-board charger
Battery degradation is a main concern for electric vehicle (EV) users, and a reliable capacity estimation is of major importance. Every EV battery management system (BMS) provides a variety of information, including measured current and voltage, and estimated capacity of the battery. However, these estimations are not transparent and are manufacturer-specific, although measurement accuracy is unknown. This article uses extensive measurements from six diverse EVs to compare and assess capacity estimation with three different methods: (1) reading capacity estimation from the BMS through the central area network (CAN)-bus, (2) using an empirical capacity estimation (ECE) method with external current measurements, and (3) using the same method with measurements coming from the BMS. We show that the use of BMS current measurements provides consistent capacity estimation (a difference of approximately 1%) and can circumvent the need for costly experimental equipment and DC chargers. Keywords: IPSO, new energy power system, RLS, SSSR
With the rapid expansion of new energy in China, the large-scale grid connection of new energy is increasing, and the operating safety of the new energy power system is being put to the test. The static security and stability region (SSSR) with hyper-plane expression is an effective instrument for situational awareness and the stability-constrained operation of power systems. This paper proposes a hybrid improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) and recursive least square (RLS) approach for rapidly approximating the SSSR boundary. Initially, the operating point data in the high-dimensional nodal injection space is examined using the IPSO algorithm to find the key generators, equivalent search space, and crucial points, which have a relatively large impact on static stability. The RLS method is ultimately utilized to fit the SSSR border that best suits the crucial spots. Consequently, the adopted algorithm technique was used to rapidly approximate the SSSR border in power injection sp... [more]

Keywords: ARDL bounds testing, Central Europe, CO2 emissions, economic growth, energy consumption, urbanization
The key goal of this research was to figure out the short and long run relationship between environmental degradation caused by carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and energy consumption, the level of GDP economic growth, and urbanization in the Visegrad Region countries (V4). The study used data from the years 1996−2020. In the methodological area, ARDL bound test, and ARDL and ECM models were used to determine the directions and strength of interdependence. The results show that in the case of some V4 countries (Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary), changes in the urbanization rate affect CO2 emissions. Moreover, it was confirmed that the phenomenon of urbanization influences the enhanced energy consumption in the studied countries. In the case of individual countries, these relationships were varied, both unidirectional and bidirectional. Their nature was also varied—there were both long and short-term relationships. These findings suggest that the V4 countries should increase renewable and ec... [more]
