Review of the Chosen Methods of Producing Front Contacts to Transparent Conductive Oxides Layers in Photovoltaic Structures
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: atomic layer deposition (ALD), solar cells, transparent conductive oxides (TCO)
It is well known that PV thin films can be deposited by an extensive range of more or less expensive and complicated techniques (such as sputtering, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor deposition (PVD), pulsed laser deposition, atomic layer deposition (ALD)). The present paper focuses on TCO layers applied by chosen techniques, including mainly the ALD and CVD methods. Thin layers of transparent conductive oxides constitute a well-known group of materials with unique properties. Oxides such as ZnO, SnO2, and In2O3 are the most significant materials of this type; some of them are discussed in the paper. From the application point of view in the photovoltaic industry, the goal is to apply a method that will provide the highest value of electric charge conductivity while maintaining the minimum value of absorption in the layer and a reduced value of the reflection coefficient. The implementation of significant achievements in the coming decade is for developing guidelines for... [more]

Mitigating Adverse Impacts of Increased Electric Vehicle Charging on Distribution Transformers
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distribution transformer, electric vehicles, reactive power compensation, transformer aging, V2G
As the world is transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs), the existing power grids are facing several challenges. In particular, the additional charging power demand may repeatedly overload the traditionally-sized distribution transformers and adversely impact their operational life. To address this challenge, this paper proposes an EV-based reactive power compensation strategy for transformer overloading mitigation. Specifically, a low-bandwidth centralized recursive controller is proposed to determine a set point for the EV’s onboard charger’s reactive power. Importantly, the proposed strategy is practically implementable in existing distribution grids as it does not rely on smart grid infrastructure and is stable under potential communication delays and partial failures. This paper discusses the controller’s structure, design, and stability in detail. The proposed solution is tested with a realistic secondary distribution system considering four different EV charging scenarios with... [more]

Study of Rotation Effect on Nanofluid Natural Convection and Heat Transfer by the Immersed Boundary-Lattice Boltzmann Method
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer, IB-LBM, nanofluid, rotation effect
Aiming to investigate the rotation effect on the natural convection and heat transfer of nanofluid, which has an important application in the control of heat transfer, the velocity field and temperature distribution inside the square cylinder with the rotating heat source in the center were numerically studied and presented in detail at different Hartman numbers and aspect ratios using the immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method. Then, the average Nusselt number on the surface of the heat source was calculated to compare the heat transfer rate in different cases. The results showed that the rotation would reduce the effect of gravity on the flow and suppress the heat transfer between the rotating heat source and nanofluid, while the external magnetic field would reduce the rotation effect on the flow and suppress or promote the heat transfer depending on the rotational speed and aspect ratio. Moreover, the smaller aspect ratio of the heat source to the square cylinder would enhance... [more]

Computing Day-Ahead Dispatch Plans for Active Distribution Grids Using a Reinforcement Learning Based Algorithm
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active distribution grids, battery control, dispatch plan, reinforcement learning
The worldwide aspiration for a sustainable energy future has led to an increasing deployment of variable and intermittent renewable energy sources (RESs). As a result, predicting and planning the operation of power grids has become more complex. Batteries can play a critical role to this problem as they can absorb the uncertainties introduced by RESs. In this paper, we solve the problem of computing a dispatch plan for a distribution grid with RESs and batteries with a novel approach based on Reinforcement Learning (RL). Although RL is not inherently suited for planning problems that require open loop policies, we have developed an iterative algorithm that calls a trained RL agent at each iteration to compute the dispatch plan. Since the feedback given to the RL agent cannot be directly observed because the dispatch plan is computed ahead of operation, it is estimated. Compared to the conventional approach of scenario-based optimization, our RL-based approach can exploit significantly... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DNI, GHI, satellite-derived solar irradiance, site-adaptation, solar energy resource assessment, UASIBS-KIER model
Satellite-derived solar irradiance is advantageous in solar resource assessment due to its high spatiotemporal availability, but its discrepancies to ground-observed values remain an issue for reliability. Site adaptation can be employed to correct these errors by using short-term high-quality ground-observed values. Recent studies have highlighted the benefits of the sequential procedure of a regressive and a distribution-mapping technique in comparison to their individual counterparts. In this paper, we attempted to improve the sequential procedure by using various distribution mapping techniques in addition to the previously proposed quantile mapping. We applied these site-adaptation techniques on the global horizontal irradiance (GHI) and direct normal irradiance (DNI) obtained from the UASIBS-KIER model in Daejeon, South Korea. The best technique, determined by a ranking methodology, can reduce the mean bias from −5.04% and 13.51% to −0.45% and −2.02% for GHI and DNI, respectively... [more]

Thermal Perturbations at Crystal Nucleation in Glass-Forming Liquids
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: crystallization, dynamic heat capacity, glass-forming liquids, nonequilibrium heat transfer, phase transitions
Understanding the processes occurring during the nanocrystallization of glass-forming liquids is important for creating artificial nanostructures for various applications. In this article, local thermal perturbations in supercooled glass-forming liquids and polymers during the nucleation of a crystalline phase are studied. To describe the thermal response of supercooled glass-forming liquids, an integro-differential heat equation with dynamic heat capacity is used. We have found that the effect of the dynamic heat capacity is significant for fast local thermal perturbations that arise in the early stages of crystal nucleation in glass-forming liquids and polymers. It has been established that local temperature perturbations during the nucleation of crystals in silicate glasses and polymers can change the nucleation rate by 2−5 orders of magnitude. The knowledge gained can be useful for the technology of artificial microstructures and advanced materials.

Status of Micro-Hydrokinetic River Technology Turbines Application for Rural Electrification in Africa
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Africa, capacity building, energy accessibility, hydrokinetic river turbine, Sustainability
Energy accessibility, reliability and availability are key components of improved quality of life and human development in all spheres. As the United Nations’ SDG 7 calls for access to electricity for all by 2030, Africa still has a wide gap to fill as the statistics show that 85% of the population that will not have access to electricity is in Africa. As the world tries to wean itself off non-renewable energy and transition to green through use of renewable energy sources, hydropower energy remains at the heart of Africa for this venture. With majority of the rural population in Africa lacking electricity, there is need for a low-tech system that utilizes river flow to generate just enough energy for normal operation in these regions. Micro-hydrokinetic river turbine technology (µ-HRT), which offers less intermittency, can potentially contribute to sustainably electrifying Africa rural areas. The technology has been adopted by few countries worldwide, with limited comprehensive study... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aluminum, analysis, computer modeling, diagnostics, mathematical model, monitoring
In this study, the authors explored the issues of the Soderbergh electrolysis cell’s increase in economic efficiency. This result was achieved by analyzing the temperature fields of the electrolysis cell in order to determine the overheating points. As a result, it led to the determination of the points of the hearth bottom’s subsequent breakdown, causing the failure of the electrolysis cell. In this paper, the mathematical modeling of the temperature fields using a spatially distributed mathematical model and conducted experimental studies were carried out. The mathematical model also provides the opportunity to measure the temperature field in the hearth bottom (at the bottom) of the OA-300M electrolysis cell. The results of the given research can be used to solve the experimental determination of the hearth bottom internal defect problem.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: granular multiphase flows, high-pressure multiphase flows, multiphase flows, multiphase flows under atmospheric pressure, phase-change multiphase flows, SPH method
Complex multiphase flow problems in ocean engineering have long been challenging topics. Problems such as large deformations at interfaces, multi-media interfaces, and multiple physical processes are difficult to simulate. Mesh-based algorithms could have limitations in dealing with multiphase interface capture and large interface deformations. On the contrary, the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method, as a Lagrangian meshless particle method, has some merit and flexibility in capturing multiphase interfaces and dealing with large boundary deformations. In recent years, with the improvement of SPH theory and numerical models, the SPH method has made significant advances and breakthroughs in terms of theoretical completeness and computational stability, which starts to be widely used in ocean engineering problems, including multiphase flows under atmospheric pressure, high-pressure multiphase flows, phase-change multiphase flows, granular multiphase flows and so on. A Survey of the Quasi-3D Modeling of Wind Turbine Icing
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: annual power production, icing conditions, power curve generation, Quasi-3D modeling, wind turbine
Wind turbine icing has been the subject of intensive research over the past two decades, primarily focusing on applying computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to 2D airfoil simulations for parametric analysis. As a result of blades’ airfoils deformation caused by icing, wind turbines experience a considerable decrease in aerodynamic performance resulting in a substantial loss of productivity. Due to the phenomenon’s complexity and high computational costs, a fully 3D simulation of the entire iced-up rotating turbine becomes infeasible, especially when dealing with several scenarios under various operating and weather conditions. The Quasi-3D steady-state simulation is a practical alternative method to assess power loss resulting from ice accretion on wind turbine blades. To some extent, this approach has been employed in several published studies showing a capability to estimate performance degradation throughout the generation of power curves for both clean and iced wind turbines. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer, internal cooling, pressure loss, thermal performance, triply periodic minimal surfaces
Triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) have shown better mechanical performance, mass transfer, and thermal conductivity than conventional and strut-based structures, which have been employed in different disciplines. Most of the literature investigates different TPMS topologies in cooling channels to enhance thermal performance due to the smooth curvature and large surface area. However, a deeper investigation of the effects of TPMS design variables and the thermal performance advantages of cooling channels is required. This review details the effects of TPMS design variables, i.e., porosity, wall thickness, and unit cell size, on flow and heat transfer enhancement. It is found that varying the design variables significantly changes the flow and heat transfer characteristics. Also, by comparing TPMS and conventional cooling structures, it is found that most TPMS structures show better thermal performance than other strategies. Moreover, different fabrication methods for TPMS-based co... [more]

How Dependent Are European Power Systems and Economies on Natural Gas?—A Macroeconomic Optimization for Security of Electricity Supply
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economic optimization, European power system, Natural Gas, security of electricity supply
How dependent are European power systems and economies on natural gas? To answer this pressing question, we coupled a simulation model for assessing security of electricity supply and an economic optimization model. With this, we were able to analyze different reduction scenarios of the amount of gas utilized in the power sector. Our results show that reducing the amount of natural gas in the European power sector by up to 30% has a relatively moderate impact on the security of electricity supply. Restrictions of 40% or more result in substantially higher reductions in electricity demand shortfall and are associated with economic costs of more than EUR 77 billion. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a close coordination of gas distribution on a European level would be instrumental in mitigating negative economic consequences. Finally, it can be deduced that a coordinated delay of planned power plant shutdowns could effectively compensate for reduced gas volumes in the electricity sector.

Numerical Simulation of Gas Production and Reservoir Stability during CO2 Exchange in Natural Gas Hydrate Reservoir
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 exchange, depressurization, natural gas hydrate, numerical simulation, reservoir stability
The prediction of gas productivity and reservoir stability of natural gas hydrate (NGH) reservoirs plays a vital role in the exploitation of NGH. In this study, we developed a THMC (thermal-hydrodynamic-mechanical-chemical) numerical model for the simulation of gas production behavior and the reservoir response. The model can describe the phase change, multiphase flow in porous media, heat transfer, and deformation behavior during the exploitation of NGH reservoirs. Two different production scenarios were employed for the simulation: depressurization and depressurization coupled with CO2 exchange. The simulation results suggested that the injection of CO2 promotes the dissociation of NGH between the injection well and the production well compared with depressurization only. The cumulative production of gas and water increased by 27.88% and 2.90%, respectively, based on 2000 days of production simulation. In addition, the subsidence of the NGH reservoir was lower in the CO2 exchange cas... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: axial-flow pump, dynamic stress, fatigue characteristics, forward and reverse working conditions, two-way fluid–structure coupling
When an axial-flow pump is running, there is a very complex flow inside the runner. Based on the two-way fluid−structure coupling method, this paper simulated the forward and reverse operating conditions of an axial-flow pump and calculated the dynamic stress distribution on the blade surface. The stress load spectrum was loaded onto the blade, and fatigue characteristic analysis was carried out to obtain the fatigue life and damage of the blade. This research shows the following: under different working conditions, the dynamic stress is concentrated at the root of the blade, and its amplitude decreases with the increase in the flow rate; at the same time, the change in stress with time shows a periodic change law. Under the working conditions of the turbine, the main frequency is the rotational frequency, and the secondary frequency is composed of multipliers of the rotational frequency, which is obviously affected by the number of blades; the fatigue damage and stress distribution ar... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydrogen combustion, pre-chamber combustion, spark ignition
Hydrogen is a promising future fuel to enable the transition of transportation sector toward carbon neutrality. The direct utilization of H2 in internal combustion engines (ICEs) faces three major challenges: high NOx emissions, severe pressure rise rates, and pre-ignition at mid to high loads. In this study, the potential of H2 combustion in a truck-size engine operated in spark ignition (SI) and pre-chamber (PC) mode was investigated. To mitigate the high pressure rise rate with the SI configuration, the effects of three primary parameters on the engine combustion performance and NOx emissions were evaluated, including the compression ratio (CR), the air−fuel ratio, and the spark timing. In the simulations, the severity of the pressure rise was evaluated based on the maximum pressure rise rate (MPRR). Lower compression ratios were assessed as a means to mitigate the auto-ignition while enabling a wider range of engine operation. The study showed that by lowering CR from 16.5:1 to 12.... [more]
