Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Blades Number on the Dynamic Response of a Small Horizontal-Axis Wind Turbine
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic response, number of blades, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, small wind turbine, solidity, vibrations, wind tunnel test
The new energy scenario is rising a strong interest towards the distributed production from renewable sources; among them, wind seems to be one of the most interesting and at the same time critical due to the challenges of the conversion technology. Operation of small wind energy conversion systems is generally very complex due the extremely variable regime of operation and the high turbulent wind, so that a deep knowledge of the dynamic response of such devices is crucial not only for optimising their performances but also to make them comfortable to be used in residential areas. For these reasons, the present work is focused on analysing the effect in changing the number of blades on a small horizontal axis wind turbine through an experimental campaign in the wind tunnel. The turbine dynamics has been characterised running some “wind ramp” tests and analysing the rotor capability in following the wind as well the vibrations transmitted by the turbine during the operation. Results dem... [more]

A Recycling Pathway for Rare Earth Metals (REMs) from E-Waste through Co-Gasification with Biomass
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, electronic wastes, gasification, rare earth metals (REMs), rare earth metals (REMs) recycling
This manuscript investigates an improvised gasification process for capturing and recycling rare earth metals (REMs) from consumer and industrial electronic wastes, often termed “e-waste”. The proposed procedure is based on the formation of coalesced and aggregated metal nodules on biochar surfaces through the gasification of e-waste mixed with gasifier feedstocks. A preliminary understanding of metal nodule formation based on different atmospheric conditions (inert, oxidizing, and oxidizing followed by reducing atmospheres) was examined in both pilot-scale gasifier and tube furnace experiments using iron powder mixed with corn. Iron powder is representative of the REM in the e-waste. Metal nodule sizes, morphology, and composition are analyzed and compared via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) techniques. We conclude that sintering is the key mechanism responsible for metal nodule growth through me... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: characteristic model, governing valve, optimal steam pressure, steam distribution mode, turbine
With the extensive application of renewable energy generation, thermal power units are required to participate in peak-regulating operations. The mode of steam distribution significantly influences the economy when the steam turbine operates at a low load. The turbine unit’s governing valve characteristics and steam distribution modes are studied in this paper, and the optimal sliding pressure operation curve is derived. Firstly, the theoretical model of the governing stage and the governing valve is derived, and the reliability is verified with field data. Secondly, the overall simulation model of the turbine unit is established, and the turbine off-design performance is analyzed with variable main steam pressure. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of the three steam distribution modes are discussed thoroughly. The steam distribution modes and optimal main steam pressures are analyzed. The results show that a precise composite sliding pressure operation scheme is recommended, a... [more]

Curled-Skewed Wakes behind Yawed Wind Turbines Subject to Veered Inflow
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical wake model, Coriolis force, wake steering, wind turbine, wind veer, yaw angle
This work presents a new engineering analytical model that predicts the effect of both the turbine yaw misalignment and the inflow wind veer on the wake flow distribution downwind of a wind turbine. To consider the veered inflow, two methods were examined. In the first method, the curled shape of the wake due to the yaw offset is initially modelled. The wake shape is then laterally skewed at each height due to the wind veer based on the assumption that the turbine wake is transported downstream by the incoming flow. The second method is a more realistic approach that accounts for the effect of wind veer on the wind velocity direction and the yaw angle seen by the wind turbine. This models the wake region in a local coordinate system defined based on the wind direction at each height. A coordinate transformation is then performed to represent the wake flow distribution in the global coordinate system attached to the ground. The results show that while the two methods provide similar out... [more]

Experimental Evaluation of Performance and Combustion Characteristics of Blended Plastic Pyrolysis Oil in Enhanced Diesel Engine
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: emissions, performance, plastic waste, pyrolysis oil
Plastic waste is the largest volume of waste and the most discarded, and it has a direct negative impact on the environment. Therefore, the pyrolysis oil process is an essential and sustainable solution to reduce plastic waste accumulation. However, the plastic pyrolysis fuel performance in diesel engines is reduced due to its lower cetane number. Diesel and pyrolysis oil were blended in ratios of 90:10 (BP10), 80:20 (BP20), 70:30 (BP30), 60:40 (BP40), and 50:50 (BP50) and applied in a single-cylinder diesel engine to investigate the engine performance and exhaust emission. The long ignition delay, thermal efficiency drops, and emission growth were found regarding the higher blended fuel ratios. BP30 was selected to evaluate the performance and combustion characteristics of blended plastic pyrolysis oil and diesel fuel blends by enhancing an unmodified engine using low hydrogen additions (1000 ppm) and advanced timing adjustment. The hydrogen injected into the intake manifold, along wi... [more]

Fault Ride-Through Techniques for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator Wind Turbines (PMSG-WTGs): A Systematic Literature Review
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fault condition, fault ride-through, grid codes, permanent magnet synchronous generators, wind energy
Global warming and rising energy demands have increased renewable energy (RE) usage globally. Wind energy has become the most technologically advanced renewable energy source. Wind turbines (WTs) must ride through faults to ensure power system stability. On the flip side, permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG)-based wind turbine power plants (WTPPs) are susceptible to grid voltage fluctuations and require extra regulations to maintain regular operations. Due to recent changes in grid code standards, it has become vital to explore alternate fault ride-through (FRT) methods to ensure their capabilities. This research will ensure that FRT solutions available via the Web of Science (WoS) database are vetted and compared in hardware retrofitting, internal software control changes, and hybrid techniques. In addition, a bibliometric analysis is provided, which reveals an ever-increasing volume of works dedicated to the topic. After that, a literature study of FRT techniques for PMSG W... [more]

A Study on Regulations Mandating Obligation on Renewable Energy in Taiwan
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electricity user, obligation on renewable energy, RPS-TW
The shift toward renewable energy has become a global trend today. In the past, power producers or the private sector were encouraged to install renewable energy equipment mainly through incentives (e.g., feed-in tariff, tax credits). Some countries also impose “renewable portfolio standards”, which mandate power producers to include RE. However, it is rare to see any mandatory requirements on electricity users anywhere in the world. Since 2018, Taiwan’s government has started to draft the RPS-TW to establish such obligation; but as a new mechanism, the greatest challenge lies in formulating feasible requirements that are apt to Taiwan’s circumstances. This study aimed to assist Taiwan’s government in this effort by formulating content that was feasible and meets external expectations regarding the applicable entities, scope, and methods of fulfillment. Once the draft had been revised accordingly, the public (electricity users, environmental groups, general public) were actively consul... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Hydrogen, resource map, seasonal storage, solar map, variability, wind map
Renewable energy supply is essential for carbon neutrality; however, technologies aiming to optimally utilize renewable energy sources remain insufficient. Seasonal variability in renewable energy is a key issue, which many studies have attempted to overcome through operating systems and energy storage. Currently, hydrogen is the only technology that can solve this seasonal storage problem. In this study, the amount of hydrogen required to circumvent the seasonal variability in renewable energy supply in Korea was quantified. Spatiotemporal analysis was conducted using renewable energy resource maps and power loads. It was predicted that 50% of the total power demand in the future will be met using solar and wind power, and a scenario was established based on the solar-to-wind ratio. It was found that the required hydrogen production differed by approximately four-times, depending on the scenarios, highlighting the importance of supplying renewable energy at an appropriate ratio. Feasibility of Photovoltaic Module Single-Diode Model Fitting to the Current−Voltage Curves Measured in the Vicinity of the Maximum Power Point for Online Condition Monitoring Purposes
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aging, curve fitting, partial I–U curve, photovoltaic system, series resistance, single-diode model
Photovoltaic system condition monitoring can be performed via single-diode model fitting to measured current−voltage curves. Model parameters can reveal cell aging and degradation. Conventional parameter identification methods require the measurement of entire current−voltage curves, causing interruptions in energy production. Instead, partial curves measured near the maximum power point offer a promising option for online condition monitoring. Unfortunately, measurement data reduction affects fitting and diagnosis accuracy. Thus, the optimal selection of maximum power point neighbourhoods used for fitting requires a systematic analysis of the effect of data selection on the fitted parameters. To date, only one published article has addressed this issue with a small number of measured curves using symmetrically chosen neighbourhoods with respect to the maximum power. Moreover, no study has determined single-diode fit quality to partial curves constructed via other principles, e.g., as... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: grid imbalance, netload forecast, PV/wind regional forecast, system flexibility
The high share of PV energy requires greater system flexibility to address the increased demand/supply imbalance induced by the inherent intermittency and variability of the solar resource. In this work, we have developed a methodology to evaluate the margins for imbalance reduction and flexibility that can be achieved by advanced solar/wind forecasting and by strengthening the national transmission grid connecting the Italian market areas. To this end, for the forecasting of the day-ahead supply that should be provided by dispatchable generators, we developed three advanced load/PV/wind forecasting methodologies based on a chain or on the optimal mix of different forecasting techniques. We showed that, compared to the baseline forecast, there is a large margin for the imbalance/flexibility reduction: 60.3% for the imbalance and 47.5% for the flexibility requirement. In contrast, the TSO forecast leaves only a small margin to reduce the imbalance of the system through more accurate for... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydrogen enhancement, natural flame luminosity, optical engine, tri-fuel combustion
A novel combustion mode, namely tri-fuel (TF) combustion using a diesel pilot to ignite the premixed methane−hydrogen−air (CH4−H2−air) mixtures, was experimentally investigated under various H2 fractions (0%, 10%, 20%, 40%, 60%) and ultra-lean conditions (equivalence ratio of φ= 0.5). The overarching objective is to evaluate the effect of H2 fraction on flame characteristics and engine performance. To visualize the effect of H2 fraction on the combustion process and flame characteristics, a high-speed color camera (Photron SA-Z) was employed for natural flame luminosity (NFL) imaging to visualize the instantaneous TF combustion process. The engine performance, flame characteristics, and flame stability are characterized based on cylinder pressure and color natural flame images. Both pressure-based and optical imaging-based analyses indicate that adding H2 into the CH4−air mixture can dramatically improve engine performance, such as combustion efficiency, flame speed, and flame stabilit... Water Vapor Blending Ratio Effects on Combustion Thermal Performance and Emission of Hydrogen Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: free piston, homogeneous charge compression ignition, Hydrogen, NOx emission, water vapor
A numerical model of the micro-free-piston engine was developed and its correctness was verified by the comparison between the simulation and referential experiment results under the same work conditions. Based on this numerical model, the effects of the water vapor blending ratio (α) on combustion thermal performance and emission characteristics of hydrogen (H2) homogeneous charge compressing ignition (HCCI) were investigated numerically. The water vapor impact on combustion temperature was analyzed as well. The simulation results reveal that when the initial equivalent ratio is 0.5, blending H2 with water vapor can delay the ignition time and prolong the whole process. At the same time, the addition of water vapor to H2 decreases the peak combustion temperature and pressure, which will alleviate the detonation phenomenon of the combustion chamber. Moreover, the power output capacity and NOx emissions decrease with the increase in α. When α increases to 0.8, the mixture gas cannot be... [more]
