Renewable Electricity and Hydrogen Production via Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy recovery, microbial electrolysis cell, microbial fuel cell, wastewater treatment
Urban wastewater could be converted into energy if microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) like microbial dual-chamber electrolysis cells (MDEC) or microbial fuel cells (MFC) are applied as a treatment method. Mathematical modelling of MFC and MDEC for wastewater treatment and energy recovery has been developed in this study. The Radaue method has been used to solve ordinary differential equations (ODEs), and the model outputs were successfully validated with previous experimental and modelling data. A case study in Montreal, Canada, has also been considered for testing the application of METs on an urban scale with a total daily wastewater flow of 75,000 L/day. The results show that from 1 m3 of wastewater, MDEC and MFC can generate 0.077 kg H2 and 0.033 kWh, respectively.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: buoyancy, cooler/condenser, cooling condition, heat transfer correlation, heat transfer enhancement/deterioration
Supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) is widely used in many fields of energy and power engineering, such as nuclear reactors, solar thermal power generation systems, and refrigeration systems. In practical applications, SCO2 undergoes a cooling process significantly when it is cooled near the pseudo−critical point. Because of the drastic variations in thermo−physical properties, the heat transfer characteristics fluctuate, affecting the heat exchange and overall cycle performance. This paper summarizes extensive experiments and numerical simulations on the cooling process of SCO2 in various application scenarios. The effects of various working conditions, such as mass flow, working pressure, pipe diameter, flow direction, and channel shapes, are reviewed. The applicability and computational results using different numerical methods under different working conditions are also summarized. Furthermore, empirical correlations obtained in experiments at different conditions are included. The... [more]

Agnostic Battery Management System Capacity Estimation for Electric Vehicles
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery capacity, BMS data, DC charger, electric vehicle, on-board charger
Battery degradation is a main concern for electric vehicle (EV) users, and a reliable capacity estimation is of major importance. Every EV battery management system (BMS) provides a variety of information, including measured current and voltage, and estimated capacity of the battery. However, these estimations are not transparent and are manufacturer-specific, although measurement accuracy is unknown. This article uses extensive measurements from six diverse EVs to compare and assess capacity estimation with three different methods: (1) reading capacity estimation from the BMS through the central area network (CAN)-bus, (2) using an empirical capacity estimation (ECE) method with external current measurements, and (3) using the same method with measurements coming from the BMS. We show that the use of BMS current measurements provides consistent capacity estimation (a difference of approximately 1%) and can circumvent the need for costly experimental equipment and DC chargers. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: IPSO, new energy power system, RLS, SSSR
With the rapid expansion of new energy in China, the large-scale grid connection of new energy is increasing, and the operating safety of the new energy power system is being put to the test. The static security and stability region (SSSR) with hyper-plane expression is an effective instrument for situational awareness and the stability-constrained operation of power systems. This paper proposes a hybrid improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) and recursive least square (RLS) approach for rapidly approximating the SSSR boundary. Initially, the operating point data in the high-dimensional nodal injection space is examined using the IPSO algorithm to find the key generators, equivalent search space, and crucial points, which have a relatively large impact on static stability. The RLS method is ultimately utilized to fit the SSSR border that best suits the crucial spots. Consequently, the adopted algorithm technique was used to rapidly approximate the SSSR border in power injection sp... [more]

Study of the Technologies for Freeze Protection of Cooling Towers in the Solar System
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cooling tower, dry and wet mixing operation, engineering plastic, freeze protection, solar system
A cooling tower is an important guarantee for the proper operation of a solar system. To ensure proper operation of the system and to maintain high-efficiency points, the cooling tower must operate year-round. However, freezing is a common problem that degrades the performance of cooling towers in winter. For example, the air inlet forms hanging ice, which clogs the air path, and the coil in closed cooling towers freezes and cracks, leading to water leakage in the internal circulation. This has become an intractable problem that affects the safety and performance of cooling systems in winter. To address this problem, three methods of freeze protection for cooling towers are studied: (a) the dry and wet mixing operation method—the method of selecting heat exchangers under dry operation at different environments and inlet water temperatures is presented. The numerical experiment shows that the dry and wet mixing operation method can effectively avoid ice hanging on the air inlet. (b) The... [more]

Assessment of Reliability Indicators of Combined Systems of Offshore Wind Turbines and Wave Energy Converters
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emissions reduction, diesel generators, offshore wind turbines, uninterrupted power supply system, wave energy converters
Marine renewable sources can make a significant contribution to the development of electrical energy generation and can increase the power supply reliability of mineral complexes. The development of alternative energy sources is happening at a fast pace, and this is due to the improvement of technologies that allow for generating more energy and operating in more extreme conditions, with almost no negative effect on the environment. However, currently, renewable sources are not able to meet all the energy requirements of the platforms. Hence, a key point is to gradually introduce and develop new technologies. This article explores the advantages of combining power generation by wave converters and offshore wind turbines. It investigates the possibilities of improving the combined systems’ reliabilities through justification of their mutual topology and accounting for the shadow effect from the wave installations.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anti-reflecting coating, anti-soiling coating, photovoltaic systems, PV solar roads
The objective of this review paper is to provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art in solar road deployment, including the availability of anti-reflection and anti-soiling coating materials for photovoltaic (PV) technology. Solar roads are built using embedded PV panels that convert sunlight into electricity, which can be stored for later use. Prototypes of solar roads have been tested on various continents, but the lack of suitable PV materials has limited their effectiveness compared to conventional PV systems. By analyzing the existing literature on solar roads and PV materials, including anti-reflection and anti-soiling coatings, we aim to identify gaps in knowledge and propose an action plan to improve the resiliency, durability, and reliability of PV panels in solar road applications. This will enable the deployment of solar roads as a clean, renewable energy source.

Influence of Battery Aging on the Operation of a Charging Infrastructure
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery aging, charging infrastructures, EV charging, PV and battery integration
The increasingly widespread use of electric vehicles requires proper planning of the charging infrastructure. In addition to the correct identification of the optimal positions, this concerns the accurate sizing of the charging station with respect to energy needs and the management of power flows. In particular, if we consider the presence of a renewable energy source and a storage system, we can identify strategies to maximize the use of renewable energy, minimizing the purchase costs from the grid. This study uses real charging data for some public stations, which include “normal” chargers (3 kW and 7 kW) and “quick” ones (43 kW and 55 kW), for the optimal sizing of a photovoltaic system with stationary storage. Battery degradation due to use is included in the evaluation of the overall running costs of the station. In this study, two different cost models for battery degradation and their influence on energy flow management are compared, along with their impact on battery life.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrical efficiency, PCM, photovoltaic system, solar radiation, ZnO powder
The thermal regulation of a silicon photovoltaic (PV) solar system is essential as the module surface temperature beyond 25 °C deteriorates its Power Conversion Efficiency (PCE). The intensity of solar radiation seems to have a crucial impact on the PCE of a PV solar system. The present study aims to assess the effect of solar radiation variations on the PCEs of PV modules integrated with and without passive cooling systems. The used passive cooling systems are (a) multi-pipe copper frame filled with Phase Change Material (PCM) and (b) multi-pipe copper frame filled with ZnO-doped PCM. The tests were conducted at the University of Jeddah in the month of March at various local times. The results show that the ambient and module surface temperatures are directly dominated by solar radiations. The conventional PV solar system presents a higher module surface temperature as compared to that of a PV system integrated with ZnO/PCM. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Coats–Redfern, DAEM, gasification, organic solid waste, TGA
The gasification kinetics of pellets obtained from organic solid wastes (OWS) and raw materials were studied using the Coats−Redfern and DAEM methods. The different methods were comparatively analyzed for mutual verification, and the similar activation energies obtained by each method affirmed the accuracy of the kinetics calculation. Overall, the activation energies of the char gasification stage ranged from 200 to 265 kJ mol−1, higher than those of the devolatilization stage, which ranged from 130 to 200 kJ mol−1 for all pellets and raw materials. During the devolatilization stage, the activation energies of the pellets were invariably higher than those of their corresponding raw materials, which was the opposite for the char gasification stage. A detailed comparison between the calculation results from the Coats−Redfern and DAEM methods confirmed that the devolatilization stage is controlled by one-dimensional diffusion, and the gasification stage is controlled by two-dimensional or... Energy Losses Related to Ring Pack Wear in Gasoline Car Engine
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blow-by, cylinder, Energy Efficiency, friction, IC engine, piston, ring, wear
Decreasing production and rising prices of cars, especially those with electric drive, lead to longer use of cars with internal combustion engines. It can be assumed that in the future, more and more cars powered by such engines with high mileage and therefore high wear will be used. Engine wear leads to reduced efficiency and increased emissions. This paper analyzes the impact of wear of the piston−rings−cylinder system components on energy losses associated with gas leakage from the combustion chamber and friction of the rings against the cylinder liner in a car spark-ignition engine. A ring pack model was used for the analyses. The input data for the simulation were gained in measurements made on the engine test stand and measurements of the wear of the engine components used in the car. The energy losses associated with blow-by in an unworn engine ranged from 1.5% of the indicated work at high load to almost 5% at low load. In the engine after 300,000 km, these losses increased to... [more]

Impact of Renewable Energy Sources and Nuclear Energy on CO2 Emissions Reductions—The Case of the EU Countries
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emissions, economic growth, energy consumption, Nuclear, renewables
The aim of this work is to analyse the dependence of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions on total energy consumption, the energy produced from renewable sources, the energy produced in nuclear power plants and the gross domestic product (GDP) in 22 European countries, over the period 1992−2019. The fully modified ordinary least squares model (FMOLS) and dynamic OLS (DOLS) were used to estimate the long-term cointegration relationship between the variables. First differenced (FD) general moments methods (GMM) were used in the estimation of short-run relationship dynamics. The results suggest that energy produced from renewable sources causes a reduction in CO2 emissions per capita. On the other hand, total energy consumption increases CO2 emissions in the long run. Although the mitigation effect of nuclear power was not found to be significant across the entire block of countries studied, a closer look at countries utilising nuclear energy reveals that nuclear energy positively affects the r...
