Heat Transfer and Fluid Circulation of Thermoelectric Fluid through the Fractional Approach Based on Local Kernel
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: circulation of thermoelectric fluid, integral transforms and differential operator, magnetization and anti-magnetization, prediction of temperature
A thermoelectric effect occurs when a material’s intrinsic property directly converts temperature differences applied across its body into electric voltage. This manuscript presents the prediction for maximum and optimal heat transfer efficiency of a thermoelectric fluid via the non-classical approach of the differential operator. The fractionalized mathematical model is also established to analyze the efficiency and characteristics of thermoelectric fluid through a temperature distribution and velocity field. The comprehensive analytical approach of integral transforms and Cardano’s method are applied to provide analytical solutions that include the dynamic investigation of the temperature distribution and velocity field. A dynamic investigation of the temperature distribution and velocity field of the thermoelectric fluid is explored on the basis of magnetization and anti-magnetization, which describe the behavior for sine and cosine sinusoidal waves. The rheological parameter, i.e.,... [more]

The Impact of Frequency Support by Wind Turbines on the Small-Signal Stability of Power Systems
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), inertia, oscillation damping, small-signal stability, transient stability, wind power generation
Rising wind energy integration, accompanied by a decreasing level of system inertia, requires additional sources of ancillary services. Wind turbines based on doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) can provide inertial and primary frequency support when equipped with specific controls. This paper investigates the effect of frequency support provision by DFIGs on the small-signal stability of power systems. To this end, a modified version of the Kundur two-area test system is employed to analyze different scenarios. Wind energy generation is either added to the existing system or displaces part of the synchronous generation. Simulations show that primary frequency support tends to improve the damping of electromechanical oscillations and deteriorate it for converter control-based ones. On the other hand, the inertial response depends on the control parameters.

A Normal Behavior-Based Condition Monitoring Method for Wind Turbine Main Bearing Using Dual Attention Mechanism and Bi-LSTM
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: attention mechanism, Bi-LSTM, condition monitoring, main bearing, wind turbine
As clean and low-carbon energy, wind energy has attracted the attention of many countries. The main bearing in the transmission system of large-scale wind turbines (WTs) is the most important part. The research on the condition monitoring of the main bearing has received more attention from many scholars and the wind industry, and it has become a hot research topic. The existing research on the condition monitoring of the main bearing has the following drawbacks: (1) the existing research assigns the same weight to each condition parameter variable, and the model extracts features indiscriminately; (2) different historical time points of the condition parameter variable are given the same weight, and the influence degree of different historical time points on the current value is not considered; and (3) the existing literature does not consider the operating characteristics of WTs. Different operating conditions have different control strategies, which also determine which condition pa... [more]

State-Partial Accurate Voltage Fault Prognosis for Lithium-Ion Batteries Based on Self-Attention Networks
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery systems, electric vehicles, fault prognosis, self-attention mechanism, voltage prediction
Multiple faults in new energy vehicle batteries can be diagnosed using voltage. To find voltage fault information in advance and reduce battery safety risk, a state-partitioned voltage fault prognosis method based on the self-attention network is proposed. The voltage data are divided into three parts with typical characteristics according to the charging voltage curve trends under different charge states. Subsequently, a voltage prediction model based on the self-attention network is trained separately with each part of the data. The voltage fault prognosis is realized using the threshold method. The effectiveness of the method is verified using real operating data of electric vehicles (EVs). The effects of different batch sizes and window sizes on model training are analyzed, and the optimized hyperparameters are used to train the voltage prediction model. The average error of predicted voltage is less than 2 mV. Finally, the superiority and robustness of the method are verified.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas–liquid two-phase flow, heat transfer characteristics, rectangular channel, square channel
Two-phase flow in non-circular cross-section flow channels such as micro-heat sinks and micro-channel heat exchangers has received extensive attention due to its heat-enhancing properties. In this paper, under the boundary of constant heat flux, an experimental investigation of the heat transfer properties of gas−liquid two-phase flow in horizontal channels with cross-sections of 4 × 4 mm and 8 × 3 mm is carried out using air and water as working fluids. The effects of different inlet gas and liquid inlet Reynolds numbers on the wall temperature and Nusselt number are discussed. The results show that the effects of the liquid Reynolds number and the gas phase Reynolds number on the heat transfer coefficient of the square tube and the rectangular tube are different. Under the same gas−liquid Reynolds number, the Nusselt number of the gas−liquid two-phase flow in the square-section tube can be increased by 3.2 times compared with that in the single-phase flow, while the Nusselt number of... Improving the Reliability of an Electric Power System by Biomass-Fueled Gas Engine
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, contingency, gas engine, probabilistic load flow, reliability systems
This paper shows a practice to raise the reliability of an electric power system by the installation of distributed generation, taking gasified biomass as fuel. To calculate the reliability index, a probabilistic load flow was used. This index is determined as the fault probability of the system. The resolution of this probabilistic load flow combines the method of cumulants and Gram−Charlier expansion. To achieve the reliability index, simulating a number of contingencies is required; the greater the number of simulated contingencies, the higher the accuracy of the index obtained. This probabilistic technique uses the random variables as starting information, so the two generators and loads are simulated as random variables. The generators of this distributed generation are biomass-fueled gas engines, commonly found in Spain. The simulations carried out on the IEEE 14-bus Test System, including three biomass generators, show that the inclusion of this type of generation improves the o... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: lacustrine shale, marine shale, pore structure, shale gas, shale reservoirs
Although almost all the shale gas in China is exploited from marine shale (Wufeng−Longmaxi Formation) in Sichuan Basin and several prolific wells, it has also been obtained in Jurassic lacustrine shale. However, the reservoir conditions of the lacustrine shale are not well understood, which has impeded a breakthrough regarding lacustrine shale gas in Sichuan Basin. To probe the reservoir conditions of the lacustrine shale in Sichuan Basin, we take the Wufeng−Longmaxi shale and Dongyuemiao shale sampled from wells and outcrops as examples. A series of experiments were conducted, including TOC, XRD, FE-SEM, N2 adsorption, Micro-CT, vitrinite reflectance and bitumen reflectance. The results show that the pores in marine shale are mainly composed of organic-matter-hosted pores (OM pores). However, in the lacustrine shale, the pores are mainly composed of dissolution pores and intergranular pores. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emission reduction, cogeneration, GHG, solar energy, wastewater treatment plant
The European Parliament’s climate and energy policy, which aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 considerably, imposes on Member States the duty to develop National Action Plans (NAPs), which determine the percentage of renewable energy sources (RES) in gross energy consumption. Poland assumed a percentage of renewable energy sources in gross energy consumption of 21−23% in the NREAP. In 2020, Poland’s utilisation of renewable energy sources was 16.2% (22nd among EU nations), which was lower than the European average. The municipal sector, particularly sewage treatment facilities, can undoubtedly contribute to an increase in renewable energy generation and utilisation. Wastewater and sewage sludge are excellent sources of heat and energy in the methane fermentation process, and the sewage treatment plant area is perfect for solar panel installation. The article is a case study that presents the possibility of decreasing CO2 emissions from wastewater treatment facilities by 45,00... [more]

Coal is an important fossil fuel energy that occupies a high position in the energy use of China and even the world. However, gas explosions are still the deadliest coal mine accident in China, which has long plagued the safety of energy mining. Only through accident cause analysis can we know the exact cause of the accident so as to make targeted policies, safety trainings, etc. However, the lack of detailed accident cause classification in current coal mine gas explosion accidents affects the comprehensiveness and accuracy of energy mining safety strategies. Therefore, in this study, a classification method for coal mine gas explosion accident causes based on the sixth edition 24Model and the three-element classification of gas explosions was proposed. Then, the consistency and validity of the newly established classification system were evaluated based on the three indicators, i.e., observer consistency, content validity, and criterion validity, and the performance of the classifica... Optimizing Current Profiles for Efficient Online Estimation of Battery Equivalent Circuit Model Parameters Based on Cramer−Rao Lower Bound
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery equivalent circuit model, battery internal resistance, battery management system, Cramer–Rao lower bound, least squares estimation
Battery management systems (BMS) are important for ensuring the safety, efficiency and reliability of a battery pack. Estimating the internal equivalent circuit model (ECM) parameters of a battery, such as the internal open circuit voltage, battery resistance and relaxation parameters, is a crucial requirement in BMSs. Numerous approaches to estimating ECM parameters have been reported in the literature. However, existing approaches consider ECM identification as a joint estimation problem that estimates the state of charge together with the ECM parameters. In this paper, an approach is presented to decouple the problem into ECM identification alone. Using the proposed approach, the internal open circuit voltage and the ECM parameters can be estimated without requiring the knowledge of the state of charge of the battery. The proposed approach is applied to estimate the open circuit voltage and internal resistance of a battery.

Due to their attractive properties, such as high energy and power density, Lithium-ion batteries are currently the most suitable energy storage system for powering portable electronic equipment, electric vehicles, etc. However, they are still affected by safety and stability problems that need to be solved to allow a wider range of applications, especially for critical areas such as power networks and aeronautics. In this paper, the issue of overdischarge abuse has been addressed on Lithium-ion cells with different anode materials: a graphite-based anode and a Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO)-based anode model. Tests were carried out at different depths of discharge (DOD%) in order to determine the effect of DOD% on cell performance and the critical conditions that often make the cell fail irreversibly. Tests on graphite anode cells have shown that at DOD% higher than 110% the cell is damaged irreversibly; while at DOD% lower than 110% electrolyte deposits form on the anodic surface and st... [more]

Increasing environmental problems and the energy crisis have led to interest in the development of alternative energy. One of the most promising sustainable alternatives to fossil fuel is biodiesel which is typically produced from the transesterification of refined vegetable oils using a homogeneous base catalyst. However, the current process limitations and steep production costs associated with the use of homogeneous catalysts have limited the global-wide acceptance of biodiesel. Heterogeneous catalysts have been considered suitable alternatives, but they still suffer from low catalytic activity. In this study, by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we examined the electronic and catalytic activity of the single Na-doped graphitic carbon nitrides (indicated by Na-doped g-C3N4) toward the efficient biodiesel (acetic acid methyl ester) production via the transesterification of triglyceride (triacetin). Keywords: power electronic coveters, renewable energy sources, virtual inertia, virtual-synchronous machine, VSM control, VSM topologies
In recent years, the penetration of renewable power generations into the electrical grid has substantially increased. Continuous deployment of power electronic-based distributed generations and the reduction of traditional synchronous machines with their essential dynamics in modern power networks are very critical in this change. The use of power electronic inverters leads to the dissociation of sources and loads and lowering the power system inertia. Under power imbalance, this drop causes an elevated rate of change in frequency and frequency divergences, which has a notable impact on the system’s frequency stability. As a result, enhanced control techniques for grid-tied electronic converters are required to secure the power system’s stability and support. The virtual-synchronous generator (VSG) control is used to mimic the dynamics of a rotating synchronous generator and improve the power system’s stability. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: finite element methods, permanent magnet, reluctance machines
The reluctance machine is a potential candidate for electrical vehicle propulsion because of its reliable structure, low cost, flexible flux regulation ability, and wide speed range. However, the torque density is unsatisfactory because of the poor excitation ability and low stator core utilization factor. To solve this problem, in this paper, a novel hybrid reluctance machine (HRM) with the skewed permanent magnet (PM) and the zero-sequence current is proposed for electric vehicles. The skewed PM has two magnetomotive force (MMF) components with different functions. The radial MMF component provides extra torque by the flux modulation effect. The tangential MMF component can generate a constant biased field in the stator core to relieve the saturation caused by the zero-sequence current and thus improve the utilization factor of the stator core. Therefore, torque improvement and the relief of stator core saturation can be simultaneously achieved by the skewed PM. In this paper, the ma... [more]
