Keywords: cloud computing, grid transition, high-performance computing, IoT, Optimization, parallel computing, power system studies, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, smart grid
The transition towards net-zero emissions is inevitable for humanity’s future. Of all the sectors, electrical energy systems emit the most emissions. This urgently requires the witnessed accelerating technological landscape to transition towards an emission-free smart grid. It involves massive integration of intermittent wind and solar-powered resources into future power grids. Additionally, new paradigms such as large-scale integration of distributed resources into the grid, proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, and electrification of different sectors are envisioned as essential enablers for a net-zero future. However, these changes will lead to unprecedented size, complexity and data of the planning and operation problems of future grids. It is thus important to discuss and consider High Performance Computing (HPC), parallel computing, and cloud computing prospects in any future electrical energy studies. This article recounts the dawn of parallel computation in po... [more]

PV-CrackNet Architecture for Filter Induced Augmentation and Micro-Cracks Detection within a Photovoltaic Manufacturing Facility
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: defect detection, micro-cracks, photovoltaics, quality inspection, smart manufacturing
Photovoltaic cell manufacturing is a rigorous process involving many stages where the cell surface is exposed to external pressure and temperature differentials. This provides fertile ground for micro-cracks to develop on the cell surface. At present, domain experts carry out a manual inspection of the cell surface to judge if any micro-cracks are present. This research looks to overcome the issue of cell data scarcity through the proposed filter-induced augmentations, thus providing developers with an effective, cost-free mechanism for generating representative data samples. Due to the abstract nature of the cell surfaces, the proposed augmentation strategy is effective in generating representative samples for better generalization. Furthermore, a custom architecture is developed that is computationally lightweight compared to state-of-the-art architectures, containing only 7.01 million learnable parameters while achieving an F1-score of 97%.

An Experimental Study on a Wind Turbine Rotor Affected by Pitch Imbalance
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: BEM, pitch imbalance, wind turbine aerodynamics
An experimental and numerical investigation about the pitch imbalance effect on a wind turbine model is performed. The characterization of the power losses and loads generated on a small-scale model and the validation of an analytical framework for the performance of unbalanced rotors are proposed. Starting from the optimal collective pitch assessment (performed to identify the condition with the maximum power coefficient), the pitch of just one blade was systematically changed: it is seen that the presence of a pitch misalignment is associated with a degradation of the turbine performance, visible both from experiments and from Blade Element Momentum (BEM) calculations (modified to account for the load asymmetry). Up to 30% power losses and a 15% thrust increase are achievable when an imbalanced rotor operates at tip speed ratios around five, clearly highlighting the importance of avoiding this phenomenon when dealing with industrial applications. The numerical model predicts this res... [more]

Heat Transfer in 3D Laguerre−Voronoi Open-Cell Foams under Pulsating Flow
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer coefficient, heat transfer enhancement, Laguerre–Voronoi tessellation, open-cell foams, porous media, pulsating flow
Open-cell foams are attractive for heat transfer enhancement in many engineering applications. Forced pulsations can lead to additional heat transfer enhancement in porous media. Studies of heat transfer in open-cell foams under forced pulsation conditions are limited. Therefore, in this work, the possibility of heat transfer enhancement in porous media with flow pulsations is studied by a numerical simulation. To generate the 3D open-cell foams, the Laguerre−Voronoi tessellation method was used. The foam porosity was 0.743, 0.864, and 0.954. The Reynolds numbers ranged from 10 to 55, and the products of the relative amplitude and the Strouhal numbers ranged from 0.114 to 0.344. Heat transfer was studied under the conditions of symmetric and asymmetric pulsations. The results of numerical simulation showed that an increase in the amplitude of pulsations led to an augmentation of heat transfer for all studied porosities. The maximum intensification of heat transfer was 43%. Symmetric pu... [more]

Battery Electric Tractors: Small-Scale Organic Growers’ Preferences, Perceptions, and Concerns
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Batteries, clean energy, electric tractors, instrumental values, interviews, organic, sustainable energy transitions, vegetables
Battery electric tractors (BETs) demonstrate considerable advantages over diesel-fueled tractors, including higher conversion efficiency, higher torque, less maintenance, and no tailpipe emissions. Converting to BETs also requires tradeoffs in the form of the batteries’ high cost, increased weight, limited energy capacity, finite charging cycles, and lengthy charging time. The extent to which small-scale organic vegetable, fruit and cut-flower growers are aware of these tradeoffs is unknown. Little research exists examining these growers’ perceptions, concerns, and willingness to pay for or adopt BETs. Here, we address that gap by conducting qualitative semi-structured interviews with 14 organic growers in the US Midwest, most operating in Michigan. We focus our questions on growers’ motivations, existing tractor-use patterns, and the evaluation of different configurations of a belly-mount open-station cultivating BET. Our results suggest interest in and potential for growers to transi... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CPA equation of state, hydrate, Northwestern Sichuan Basin, sour natural gas, throttling technology, ultra-high-pressure
The gas reservoirs in the Northwestern Sichuan Basin have great development potential. However, their production efficiency is seriously reduced by the complex surface multistage throttling process and frequent hydrate plugging caused by the ultra-high-pressure sour gas. Considering the prevention and control of hydrates, properly designing the throttling temperature and pressure to optimize the surface production process is the key to solving this problem. First, this work presents a method for predicting the hydrate formation conditions of ultra-high-pressure sour natural gas based on the vdW-P (van der Waals−Platteeuw) model and the CPA (cubic-plus-association) equation of state (EoS) and considering the association between acid gases (H2S, CO2) and H2O. Secondly, the throttling temperature prediction method was developed by coupling the isenthalpic throttling model and the modified Lee−Kesler EoS mixing rule; the maximum throttling pressure difference calculation method was constru... Conversion of Biomass to Chemicals via Electrofermentation of Lactic Acid Bacteria
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biofuels, electrofermentation, ensiling, Fermentation, LAB, lactic acid bacteria, platform precursor chemicals, PPCs
Microbial electrosynthesis is the process of supplying electrons to microorganisms to reduce CO2 and yield industrially relevant products. Such systems are limited by their requirement for high currents, resulting in challenges to cell survival. Electrofermentation is an electron-efficient form of microbial electrosynthesis in which a small cathodic or anodic current is provided to a culture to alter the oxidation−reduction potential of the medium and, in turn, alter microbial metabolism. This approach has been successfully utilised to increase yields of diverse products including biogas, butanediol and lactate. Biomass conversion to lactate is frequently facilitated by ensiling plant biomass with homofermentative lactic acid bacteria. Although most commonly used as a preservative in ensiled animal feed, lactate has diverse industrial applications as a precursor for the production of probiotics, biofuels, bioplastics and platform chemicals. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: experimental fluid dynamics, wake models, wind turbine wake
We propose an experimental study on the influence of the tip speed ratio on the spatial development of a wind turbine wake. To accomplish this, a scaled wind turbine is tested in a wind tunnel, and its turbulent wake measured for streamwise distances between 1 and 30 diameters. Two different tip speed ratios (5.3 and 4.5) are tested by varying the pitch angle of the rotor blades between the optimal setting and one with an offset of +6∘. In addition, we test two Reynolds numbers for the optimal tip speed ratio, ReD=1.9×105 and ReD=2.9×105 (based on the turbine diameter and the freestream velocity). For all cases, the mean streamwise velocity deficit at the centerline evolves close to a power law in the far wake, and we check the validity of the Jensen and Bastankhah-Porté-Agel engineering wind turbine wake models and the Townsend-George wake model for free shear flows for this region. Lastly, we present radial profiles of the mean streamwise velocity and test different radial models. Ou... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: buckypaper, flexible, free-standing, Li-ion battery, LTO
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been used in many fields, such as consumer electronics and automotive and grid storage, and its applications continue to expand. Several studies have attempted to improve the performance of LIBs. In particular, the use of high-capacity silicon and tin as anodes has been widely studied. Although anodes composed of silicone and tin have high theoretical capacities, poor electrical conductivity and considerable volume expansion of such anodes deteriorate the LIB performance. Thus, Li4Ti5O12 (LTO), a zero-strain material, has attracted much attention with high cycle stability and rate capability through improved electrical conductivity. However, LTO has the disadvantages of a low electrical conductivity (10−8 to 10−13 S cm−1) and moderate Li+ ion diffusion coefficient (10−9 to 10−16 cm2 s−1). In this study, the flexible and free-standing composite films were fabricated using only LTO and multi-walled carbon nanotube(CNT) with high electrical conductivity a... [more]
