Experimental Study on Flow Boiling Characteristics in Continuous and Segmented Microchannels with Vapor Venting Membrane
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow boiling, heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop, segmented microchannel, vapor venting membrane
Flow boiling in microchannels is one of the promising techniques for heat dissipation occurred in micro devices. However, the rapid bubble growth must be suppressed, which leads to serious boiling instabilities, high pressure drop, and low heat transfer coefficient. The addition of porous hydrophobic membrane has proven an effective method to remove the vapor in-site in the literature. However, the effects of heat sink’s topological structures on the vapor venting are still a research gap. The present study experimentally investigates the influence of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane on fluid flow pattern, pressure drop, vapor venting performance, and heat transfer characteristics of flow boiling in the continuous and segmented heat sinks. Results show that the vapor venting membrane can reduce the pressure drop and increase the heat transfer coefficient effectively by decreasing the exit vapor quality, especially in combination with the segmented structures. The interconnection... [more]

Application of Technology to Develop a Framework for Predicting Power Output of a PV System Based on a Spatial Interpolation Technique: A Case Study in South Korea
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: IDW, photovoltaic system, solar radiation, spatial interpolation
To increase the accuracy of photovoltaic (PV) power prediction, meteorological data measured at a plant’s target location are widely used. If observation data are missing, public data such as automated synoptic observing systems (ASOS) and automatic weather stations (AWS) operated by the government can be effectively utilized. However, if the public weather station is located far from the target location, uncertainty in the prediction is expected to increase owing to the difference in distance. To solve this problem, we propose a power output prediction process based on inverse distance weighting interpolation (IDW), a spatial statistical technique that can estimate the values of unsampled locations. By demonstrating the proposed process, we tried to improve the prediction of photovoltaic power in random locations without data. The forecasting accuracy depends on the power generation forecasting model and proven case, but when forecasting is based on IDW, it is up to 1.4 times more acc... [more]

Analysis of the Influence of the Gas Infrared Heater and Equipment Element Relative Positions on Industrial Premises Thermal Conditions
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: convective heat transfer, gas infrared heater, heat supply object, local working area, thermal conditions
The creation of local heated areas in large-sized premises using systems based on gas infrared heaters has recently become the most rational alternative in terms of energy efficiency. However, the lack of information about the thermal characteristics in such areas limits the effective application of these systems. To determine the main thermal parameters characterizing the scheduled thermal conditions in heated local working areas of industrial premises, experimental and mathematical modeling of heat transfer processes in a closed area with the presence of equipment in it was carried out. The experimental area was equipped with a gas infrared heater and a model of the equipment (a horizontally oriented panel). The system of equations of thermal conductivity, radiant heat transfer, as well as energy and Navier−Stokes was solved by the finite element method. A significant influence of the equipment position on the temperature field and the air movement hydrodynamics in the local working... [more]

Multipoint Design Optimization of a Radial-Outflow Turbine for Kalina Cycle System Considering Flexible Operating Conditions and Variable Ammonia-Water Mass Fraction
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive surrogate model, Kalina cycle, multipoint design optimization, ORC system, radial-outflow turbine
The radial-outflow turbine has advantages due to its liquid-rich gas adaptability when applied in the Kalina ammonia-water cycle system. However, the operational conditions of the turbine often deviate from its design values due to changes of the heat source or the cooling conditions, and such deviates may deteriorate the flow behavior and degrade the turbine performance. To enhance the turbine efficiency at complex conditions for flexible running of the Kalina cycle system, a multipoint design optimization method is developed: the flexible operating has been defined by three critical, dimensionless parameters, which cover a wide range in a 3D operating space; the representative off-design points are identified to define the objective function; and adaptive optimization methods are integrated to permit optimization searching using limited CFD callings. The developed multipoint design method is adopted to improve the turbine performance under complex operating conditions. The obtained r... [more]

Flow-Induced Vibration of Non-Rotating Structures of a High-Head Pump-Turbine during Start-Up in Turbine Mode
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow-induced vibration, non-rotating structures, pump-turbine, start-up, turbine mode
Pumped storage-power plants play an extremely important role in the modern smart grid due to their irreplaceable advantages in load peak-valley regulation, frequency modulation, and phase modulation. The number of start-stops per day of pump-turbine units is therefore also increasing. During the start-up transient process in turbine mode, the complex flow in runner passage, crown and band chambers, and seal labyrinth is able to induce severe vibration of non-rotating structures such as head cover, stay-ring, and pose a threat to the safe operation of the pump-turbine unit. In this article, the flow-induced vibration of the structures of a pump-turbine unit during its start-up process in turbine mode is studied. In the first place, this investigation establishes a three-dimensional model of the full flow passage and carries out a full three-dimensional CFD calculation based on one-dimensional pipeline calculation results for the start-up transient process. Production and Testing of Butyl and Methyl Esters as New Generation Biodiesels from Fatty Wastes of the Leather Industry
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: animal fats butyl esters, animal fats methyl esters, biodiesel, biofuel, fuel parameters, motor fuels testing, second generation biofuels, transesterification process, waste animal fats
Climate changes caused by the greenhouse effect make it necessary to look for new sources of energy. One of them is waste of a biological origin. They are often difficult to dispose of and such a process can be expensive. Increasingly, they are used to produce biofuels that can replace petroleum-based fuels. They are also an alternative to food-based biofuels. The aim of the work was to propose a method of using fatty waste generated in a plant dealing with tanning animal skins and to evaluate the properties of the produced biofuels. The authors decided to use this waste to produce biodiesel. A patented reactor and technology developed by one of the co-authors was used for this purpose. Two alcohols, butyl and methyl, were used to produce esters in the transesterification process. Animal fats butyl esters (AFBE) and animal fats methyl esters (AFME) have been produced. A high efficiency of the transesterification process was obtained. It amounted to 99.2 (wt.%) for AFME and 98.9 (wt.%)... [more]

View Factors of Flat Collectors, Including Photovoltaics, Visible to Partial Sky
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cross-string rule, diffuse radiation, PV fields, row spacing, sky view factors
The sky view factor of collectors in photovoltaic (PV) fields is a parameter that determines the amount of incident diffuse radiation. The diffuse radiation may contribute significantly to the generated electric energy. PV systems are deployed in multiple rows and separated from each other and from nearby structures. Rows in front and nearby structures may block part of the visible sky to the collectors, thus decreasing the sky view factor. The distance between collectors and objects is an important parameter for the design of photovoltaic systems. The present study develops the expression for sky view factors for cases encountered in deployments of PV fields and presents numerical values for the sky view factors for distances between collectors and from obscuring structures. Sky view factors for flat collectors in the presence of adjacent collectors or structures have not been treated in the literature, besides for simple or common cases. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer, microelectronic cooling, mini-channel heat sink, nanofluid, supercritical carbon dioxide
Mini-channel heatsinks have proven useful in removing high heat fluxes from microelectronic devices. However, further miniaturization of electronic devices requires significant enhancement in the mini-channel heatsinks’ thermohydraulic characteristics, which depend greatly on the coolant and geometrical configuration of the channel. Therefore, the current study explores the potential of mini-channel heatsinks’ using different coolants (water, nanofluid and supercritical carbon dioxide) and various channel configurations. The effect of various channel configurations on the thermohydraulic characteristics of the mini-channel heat sinks is evaluated numerically for different coolants employing three flow rates (17 g/s, 34 g/s and 50 g/s). Hence, the effects of fin height, spacing and thickness, and mass flow rate on the overall heat transfer coefficient (CHT) and pressure drop (ΔP) are reported for the abovementioned coolants. It is found that increasing the mass flow rate increases both... [more]

Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, particle lateral velocity, particle–particle interaction, proppant settling, stable repulsion
The elevated energy demand and high dependency on fossil fuels have directed researchers’ attention to promoting and advancing hydraulic fracturing (HF) operations for a sustainable energy future. Even though previous studies have demonstrated that the proppant suspension and positioning in slickwater play a vital role during the shut-in stage of the HF operations, minimal experimental work has been conducted on the fundamental proppant−proppant interaction mechanisms, especially a complete mapping of the interactions. This study utilizes high-speed imaging to provide a 2D space- and time-resolved investigation of two-particle (proppant models: 2 mm Ø, 2.6 g·cm−3) interactions during gravitational settling in different initial spatial configurations and rheological properties. The mapping facilitates the identification of various interaction regimes and newly observed particle trajectories. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: inverter, multilevel, PWM, SHE, SPWM, T-type, topology
Multilevel inverters (MLI) consist of a wide range of power converters. They have many designs and have been introduced with different circuit topologies such as neutral point clamped, diode clamped, cascaded H-bridges, and flying capacitors. Some of these MLIs have disadvantages, including design complexity, size, and losses due to the large number of switching devices required when they produce many output voltage levels. They are also bulky in size and may require several DC power sources. This paper presents a review of the various topologies of single-phase T-Type MLIs (T-MLIs). These MLIs are used to convert DC power from renewable energy sources (RES)” into AC with a near-sine waveform and low total harmonic distortion (THD). Simple and complex MLI designs are discussed. The major types of modulation techniques are discussed, including sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM), selective harmonic elimination (SHE), and preprogrammed PWM. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: iron–chromium redox flow battery, RM, waste membrane recycling
Iron−chromium redox flow batteries (ICRFB) possess the advantage of low raw material cost, intrinsic safety, long charge−discharge cycle life, good life-cycle economy, and environmental friendliness, which has attracted attention from academia and industry over time. The proton exchange membrane (PEM) is an important part of the ICRFB system, impacting the efficiency and lifetime of the battery. Currently, the most widely used PEMs in the market are per-fluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes, which possess high electrolyte stability and achieve the separation of positive and negative electrolytes. In addition, the complex preparation process and extremely high market price limited the usage of PEM in ICRFB. In this paper, we developed a remanufactured membrane (RM) strategy from waste PFSA resins. Improvement of Gas Compressibility Factor and Bottom-Hole Pressure Calculation Method for HTHP Reservoirs: A Field Case in Junggar Basin, China
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bottom-hole pressure, gas compressibility factor, high temperature and high pressure, Natural Gas, southern margin of Junggar Basin, ultra-deep
Gas reservoirs discovered in the southern margin of the Junggar Basin generally have high temperatures (up to 172.22 °C) and high pressures (up to 171.74 MPa). If using the PVT laboratory to get the gas compressibility factor, data from the laboratory are so little that it will not satisfy the demands of reservoir engineering calculations. There are many empirical correlations for calculating the Z-factor; however, these correlations give large errors at high gas reservoir pressures. The errors in estimating the Z-factor will lead to large errors in estimating all the other gas properties such as gas formation volume factor, gas compressibility, and gas in place. In this paper, a new accurate Z-factor correlation has been developed based on PVT data by correcting the high-pressure part of the most commonly used Dranchuk-Purvis-Robinson Correlation. Multivariate nonlinear regression is used to establish the independent variable function of pseudo-critical temperatures and pressures. By... [more]

Fuzzy-Based Simultaneous Optimal Placement of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations, Distributed Generators, and DSTATCOM in a Distribution System
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed generators, distribution static compensator, distribution system, electric vehicles, power factor
Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular due to their inexpensive maintenance, performance improvements, and zero carbon footprint. The electric vehicle’s load impacts the distribution system’s performance as the electric vehicle’s adoption rises. As a result, the distribution system’s dependability depends on the precise location of the electric vehicle charging station (EVCS). The main challenge is the deteriorating impact of the distribution system caused by the incorrect placement of the charging station. The distribution system is integrated with the charging station in conjunction with the distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) and distributed generation (DG) to reduce the impact of the EVCS. This paper presents a fuzzy classified method for optimal sizings and placements of EVCSs, DGs, and DSTATCOMs for 69-bus radial distribution systems using the RAO-3 algorithm. Thermocouple Effective Length under Sinusoidal Gas Temperature Condition
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: effective length, sinusoidal temperature profile, thermocouple
When a thermocouple is used to measure gas temperature, the measured temperature is the thermocouple bead temperature, which is not equal to the gas temperature. The bead temperature results from its energy balance. Through the wire convection and conduction, the temperature of the bead is related to the gas temperature within a certain geometric range around it, and this range is quantified by the effective length. Under the sinusoidal incoming gas temperature condition, the analytical expression for the effective length is deduced, and its accuracy is validated by the one-dimensional numerical solution. The differences between the analytical and numerical effective lengths are less than 10.5% for the test cases. Similar to that under the uniform incoming gas temperature condition, the effective length under the sinusoidal gas temperature condition increases with the thermal conductivity and the diameter of the wire and decreases with the heat transfer coefficient of the wire. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: agent-based model, energy consumption prediction, occupant–equipment interaction, office buildings, two-part model
Traditional building energy consumption prediction methods lack the description of occupant behaviors. The interactions between occupants and equipment have great influence on building energy consumption, which cause a large deviation between the predicted results and the actual situation. To address this problem, a two-part prediction model, consisting of a basic part related to the building area and a variable part related to stochastic occupant behaviors, is proposed in this study. The wavelet decomposition and reconstruction method is firstly used to split the energy consumption. A relationship between the low frequency energy consumption data and the building area is discovered, and an area-based index is used to fit the basic part of the prediction model. With a quantitative description of the occupant−equipment interaction by classifying the equipment into environmentally relevant and environmentally irrelevant equipment, an agent-based model is established in the variable part.... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air heat pump, Carnot battery system, cost flow rate of electricity, energy density, roundtrip efficiency, steam turbine
In this study, exergy and thermoeconomic analyses were performed on a Carnot battery system (CBS) comprising an air heat pump and steam turbine. The Carnot battery technology employed in this study stored electricity as heat for 10 h during night-time, when electricity prices were low, and generated electricity for 10 h with power output of 500 MW during the day, when electricity prices were relatively high. The roundtrip efficiency and the energy density of the CBS were approximately 0.37, and 150.0 MJ/m3, respectively. When the unit cost of electricity supplied to the heat pump system was approximately 23.0 USD/GJ, that of electricity produced by the steam turbine was approximately 70.8 USD/GJ. The thermoeconomic results indicate that the changes in electricity cost flow rate relative to the reference value can be used as an indicator to make purchasing, replacement, and research and development decisions for specific components of the CBS.

Photovoltaic (PV) energy source generation is becoming more and more common with a higher penetration level in the smart grid because of PV energy’s falling production costs. PV energy is intermittent and uncertain due to its dependence on irradiance. To overcome these drawbacks, and to guarantee better smart grid energy management, we need to deal with PV power prediction. The work presented in this paper concerns the study of the performance of the fuzzy MPPT approach to extract a maximum of power from solar panels, associated with PV power estimation based on short time scale irradiance forecasting. It is particularly applied to a case study of a tropical insular region, considering extreme climatic variability. To validate our study with real solar data, measured and predicted irradiance profiles are used to feed the PV system, based on solar forecasting in a tropical insular context.
