March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air-conditioning, Carbon Dioxide, CO2MPAS, cold start, low temperature, real-driving emissions (RDE), road grade, traffic, vehicle emissions
The EU aims to substantially reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in the following decades and achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Better CO2 estimates, particularly in urban conditions, are necessary for assessing the effectiveness of various regional policy strategies. In this study, we measured the CO2 emissions of a Euro 6d-temp gasoline direct injection (GDI) vehicle with a three-way catalyst (TWC) and a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) at ambient temperatures from −30 °C up to 50 °C with the air-conditioning on. The tests took place both on the road and in the laboratory, over cycles simulating congested urban traffic, dynamic driving, and uphill driving towing a trailer at 85% of the maximum payloads of both the car and the trailer. The CO2 values varied over a wide range depending on the temperature and driving conditions. Vehicle simulation was used to quantify the effect of ambient temperature, vehicle weight and road grade on the CO2 emissions. The results showed that vehicl... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat transfer, magneto-convection, Magnetohydrodynamics, WCLL
The Water Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) breeding blanket is one of the driver blanket concepts under development for the European Demonstration Reactor (DEMO). The majority of the blanket volume is occupied by flowing PbLi at eutectic composition. This liquid metal flow is subdued to high fluxes of particles coming from the plasma which are translated into a high non-homogeneous heat volumetric source inside the fluid. The heat is removed from the PbLi thanks to several water tubes immersed in the metal. The dynamics of the PbLi is heavily affected by the heat source and by the position of the tubes. Moreover, the conducting fluid is electrically coupled with the intense magnetic field used for the plasma confinement. As a result, the PbLi flow is strongly affected by the Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) forces. In the WCLL, the MHD and convective interactions are expected to be comparable. Therefore, the PbLi dynamics and consequently the heat transfer between the liquid metal and the water co... [more]

Pierryves Padey, Kyriaki Goulouti, Guy Wagner, Blaise Périsset, Sébastien Lasvaux
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy-efficient building, global sensitivity analysis, on-site measurements, performance gap, probabilistic heating demand
The performance gap, defined as the difference between the measured and the calculated performance of energy-efficient buildings, has long been identified as a major issue in the building domain. The present study aims to better understand the performance gap in high-energy performance buildings in Switzerland, in an ex-post evaluation. For an energy-efficient building, the measured heating demand, collected through a four-year measurement campaign was compared to the calculated one and the results showed that the latter underestimates the real heating demand by a factor of two. As a way to reduce the performance gap, a probabilistic framework was proposed so that the different uncertainties of the model could be considered. By comparing the mean of the probabilistic heating demand to the measured one, it was shown that the performance gap was between 20−30% for the examined period. Through a sensitivity analysis, the active air flow and the shading factor were identified as the most i... [more]

Agnieszka Iwan, Witalis Pellowski, Krzysztof A. Bogdanowicz
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conversion, nuclear battery, photovoltaic cells, radiation, scintillation
This review presents the current state of the knowledge regarding the use of radioactive sources to generate photonic light in scintillators as converters of ionizing radiation to electricity in photovoltaic cells. The possibility of using the phenomenon of the excitation of light photons in the scintillation materials during the interaction with particles and photons of ionizing radiation was analyzed in detail. The light photons obtained in such a way can generate an electric charge in photovoltaic cells. The whole process can be named as a nuclear cell (nuclear battery). Theoretically, the use of such physical phenomena seems to be an ideal practical solution to meet the energy needs of the modern world. However, there are many physical and technical problems that limit its widespread use in practical applications. In an ideal system, the ionizing radiation sources can emit the radiation for billions of years, and the energy of particles and photons from the radiation can be convert... [more]

Beichuan Hong, Varun Venkataraman, Andreas Cronhjort
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: engine exhaust system, flow enthalpy and exergy, internal combustion engine, turbine upstream condition, unsteady flow
Energy carried by engine exhaust pulses is critical to the performance of a turbine or any other exhaust energy recovery system. Enthalpy and exergy are commonly used concepts to describe the energy transport by the flow based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics. However, in order to investigate the crank-angle-resolved exhaust flow enthalpy and exergy, the significance of the flow parameters (pressure, velocity, and temperature) and their demand for high resolution need to be ascertained. In this study, local and global sensitivity analyses were performed on a one-dimensional (1D) heavy-duty diesel engine model to quantify the significance of each flow parameter in the determination of exhaust enthalpy and exergy. The effects of parameter sweeps were analyzed by local sensitivity, and Sobol indices from the global sensitivity showed the correlations between each flow parameter and the computed enthalpy and exergy. The analysis indicated that when considering the specific en... [more]

Mirosław Bajda, Monika Hardygóra
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: belt indentation rolling resistance, energy-saving belt, steel-cord conveyor belt
Results of tests into the energy-efficiency of belt conveyor transportation systems indicate that the energy consumption of their drive mechanisms can be limited by lowering the main resistances in the conveyor. The main component of these resistances is represented by belt indentation rolling resistance. Limiting its value will allow a reduction in the amount of energy consumed by the drive mechanisms. This article presents a test rig which enables uncomplicated evaluations of such rolling resistances. It also presents the results of comparative tests performed for five steel-cord conveyor belts. The tests involved a standard belt, a refurbished belt and three energy-saving belts. As temperature significantly influences the values of belt indentation rolling resistance, the tests were performed in both positive and negative temperatures. The results indicate that when compared with the standard belt, the refurbished and the energy-efficient belts generate higher and lower indentation... [more]

Keywords: Biofuels, Diesel, diesel engine, fuel consumption, harmful emissions, iso-butanol, Methanol, rapeseed oil
This contribution focuses on utilizing blended biofuels of rapeseed oil and methanol with diesel. Rapeseed is one of the most cultivated energy crops in Europe, and its purpose in the blends is to increase the bio-content in test fuels. The purpose of methanol in the blends is to increase bio-content and compensate for the higher viscosity of the rapeseed oil. As methanol is almost insoluble in diesel and rapeseed oil, iso-butanol is used as a co-solvent. The fuel blends were tested in volumetric concentrations of diesel/rapeseed oil/methanol/iso-butanol 60/30/5/5, 50/30/10/10, and 50/10/20/20. Diesel was used as a reference. The measurements were performed on a turbocharged diesel engine Zetor 1204, loaded using the power-takeoff shaft of the Zetor Forterra 8641 tractor. In this paper, the effect of the blended fuels on performance parameters, engine efficiency, production of soot particles, and regulated and unregulated emissions are monitored and analyzed. It was found that engine p... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: lift-drag combined starter, numerical simulation, starting characteristics, vertical axis wind turbine, wind tunnel test
In order to get rid of the impact of the global financial crisis and actively respond to global climate change, it has become a common choice for global economic development to develop clean energy such as wind energy, improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With the advantages of simple structure, unnecessary facing the wind direction, and unique appearance, the vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) attracts extensive attention in the field of small and medium wind turbines. The lift-type VAWT exhibits outstanding aerodynamic characteristics at a high tip speed ratio, while the starting characteristics are generally undesirable at a low wind speed; thus, how to improve the starting characteristics of the lift-type VAWT has always been an important issue. In this paper, a lift-drag combined starter (LDCS) suitable for lift-type VAWT was proposed to optimize the starting characteristics of lift-type VAWT. With semi-elliptical drag blades and lift blades equipped on th... [more]

Keywords: feedforward control, multi-port power conditioner, power quality, railway traction system, renewable energy system
To relieve the contradiction between supply and demand, a multi-port power conditioner (MP-PC) and control strategy with renewable energy access for a railway traction system is presented, which is mainly composed of full-bridge-based MMC and isolated DC/DC converters. As for the full-bridge-based MMC, the equivalent model is established and its novel voltage control method is proposed, which can provide a medium/low-voltage DC-link. A renewable energy system is connected to the system through the DC-link, so the MP-PC can achieve on-site consumption and balance between the load power and output power of RESs. Meanwhile, with the proposed control strategy, MP-PC can achieve three-phase power balance control and improve the operation performance of the railway traction system. Finally, the traction power platform and simulation model are established in the lab, and the topology and control strategy of MP-PC are verified effectively.

Keywords: energy management method, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, prediction, travel characteristics
In the research on energy management methods of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, it is expected that a future trend will be to optimize energy management using the information provided by the global positioning system (GPS) and intelligent transportation system (ITS), which is relatively scarce in current research. This study proposes a PHEV energy management method based on travel characteristic prediction. Firstly, this study processes the historical travel data of a certain driver obtained by GPS and ITS and uses the established Markov trajectory prediction model based on key points to predict the trajectory and mileage. Then, on the basis of characteristics analysis of historical travel data, while considering traffic information to form a target cycle, the driving cycles are classified and identified based on traffic information predictions. Then, according to the reasonable SOC allocation range of the four typical cycles, the planning algorithm of the SOC reference trajectory is... [more]

Keywords: fuel cell systems, high power application, impedance measurement, Nyquist plot, on-line EIS, real-time target, Simulink Real-Time, Speedgoat
Impedance measurements by EIS are used to build a physical circuit-based model that enables various fault diagnostics and lifetime predictions. These research areas are becoming increasingly crucial for the safety and preventive maintenance of fuel cell power systems. It is challenging to apply the impedance measurement up to commercial applications at the field level. Although EIS technology has been widely used to measure and analyze the characteristics of fuel cells, EIS is applicable mainly at the single-cell level. In the case of stacks constituting a power generation system in the field, it is difficult to apply EIS due to various limitations in the high-power condition with uncontrollable loads. In this paper, we present a technology that can measure EIS on-line by injecting the perturbation current to fuel cell systems operating in the field. The proposed EIS method is developed based on Simulink Real-Time so that it can be applied to embedded devices. Modeling and simulation o... [more]

Keywords: adder gearbox, heavy truck, housing, mechanical transmission, VIC, video image correlation
In this paper, a study of the vibrations that appear in the transmission shafts of an adder gearbox used for a heavy truck is made. The truck has two engines on only one chassis and the power offered by these engines is summated and transmitted to the truck or the working machine. This type of transmission is used for oil production installation for the army. During the transportation of the installation to the workplace, only one engine is running, after mounting installation, both engines are running. This paper studies the vibrations of the adder gearbox, a complex construction, subjected to multiple operating requirements. In this regard, the authors first performed accuracy (accuracy) tests of the VIC 3D system on an original experimental mini-stand. Measurements performed on a mini disc demonstrated the validity and accuracy of the method, even if the cameras used were not high resolution. The authors applied the same principle in the case of the adder box from the truck, obtaini... [more]

Keywords: choice experiment, demand response, demand side management, Gaussian mixture model, load profile, mixed logit, smart grids, time-of-use tariff
Smart meters and dynamic pricing are key factors in implementing a smart grid. Dynamic pricing is one of the demand-side management methods that can shift demand from on-peak to off-peak. Furthermore, dynamic pricing can help utilities reduce the investment cost of a power system by charging different prices at different times according to system load profile. On the other hand, a dynamic pricing strategy that can satisfy residential customers is required from the customer’s perspective. Residential load profiles can be used to comprehend residential customers’ preferences for electricity tariffs. In this study, in order to analyze the preference for time-of-use (TOU) rates of Korean residential customers through residential electricity consumption data, a representative load profile for each customer can be found by utilizing the hourly consumption of median. In the feature extraction stage, six features that can explain the customer’s daily usage patterns are extracted from the repre... [more]

Keywords: barrages, bathymetry, channels, coastal resources, flow rate, marine renewable energy, site analysis, tidal current, tidal velocity, tides
The main aim of this paper was to classify and to analyze the expeditious resource assessment procedure to help energy planners and system designers dealing with tides and tidal currents. Depending on the geographical features of the site to be evaluated, this paper reported the easiest methods to adopt for later working plans, crucial for preliminary considerations but to be supported by in situ measurements and by a more complex and detailed modelling. While tide trends are predictable by using Laplace equations and Fourier series, tidal currents velocities prediction is not easy, requiring suitable methods or hydraulic applications. Natural and artificial sites were analyzed and the best method for each type of them was presented. The latter together highlighting the minimum set of required information was discussed and provided as a toolkit for assessing tides and tidal current energy potential.

Keywords: correlation, fuzzy logic, map optimization, power capacity, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind seasonality, wind turbines
In this study, we analyze observational and predicted wind energy datasets of the lower 48 states of the United States, and we intend to predict an optimal map for new turbines placement. Several approaches have been implemented to investigate the correlation between current wind power stations, power capacity, wind seasonality, and site selection. The correlation between stations is carried out according to Pearson correlation coefficient approach joined with the spherical law of cosines to calculate the distances. The high correlation values between the stations spaced within a distance of 100 km show that installing more turbines close to the current farms would assist the electrical grid. The total power capacity indicates that the current wind turbines are utilizing approximately 70% of the wind resources available in the turbine’s sites. The Power spectrum of Fourier’s spectral density indicates main, secondary, and harmonic frequencies correspond to yearly, semiyearly, and daily... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicles, fuzzy comprehensive evaluation, fuzzy logic, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, usage analysis
Considering rising pollution as well as fuel expenses, it has now become critical to transition to a sustainable method of transportation. As a result, automakers have begun to spend on research and development in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. The amount of EVs has expanded rapidly in recent years. This is owing to new improved technology, particularly in electric motor engineering, as well as government initiatives to limit the level of environmental impact produced by combustion engines. Because EVs are powered by electricity, implementing their charging stations presents certain complications. In this paper, we have discussed the different types of EVs, such as BEVs, FCEVs, HEVs, PHEVs, and REHEVs. Even though the capacity of many of these electric car models has been substantially enhanced within the past few years, some challenges remain as a selection barrier for several customers. Considering these challenges, we have also implemented a fuzzy AHP-TOPSIS-based unified model... [more]

Keywords: Aquila Optimizer, stochastic optimal power flow, Weibull probability distribution, wind energy
Wind energy is particularly significant in the power system today since it is a cheap and clean power source. The unpredictability of wind speed leads to uncertainty in devolved power which increases the difficulty in wind energy system operation. This paper presents a stochastic optimal power flow (SCOPF) for obtaining the best scheduled power from wind farms while lowering total operational costs. A novel metaheuristics method called Aquila Optimizer (AO) is used to address the SCOPF problem due to its highly nonconvex and nonlinear nature. Wind speed is represented by the Weibull probability distribution function (PDF), which is used to anticipate the cost of wind-generated power from a wind farm based on scheduled power. Weibull parameters that provide the best match to wind data are estimated using the AO approach. The suggested wind generation cost model includes the opportunity costs of wind power underestimation and overestimation. Three IEEE systems (30, 57, and 118) are utili... [more]

Keywords: electrohydraulic drive, electrohydraulic valve, energy losses, machine design, mechanical engineering, stepping motor
In many heavy machines, the use of high force drives is required. For such tasks, electrohydraulic servo drives with proportional valves are used most often. In these valves, the proportional electromagnets are applied. If high precise control is additionally required, it is necessary to use expensive servo valves or precise stepping motors. In this paper, the application of a valve with one (or with two) stepping motors in the electrohydraulic servo drive is described. Such motors may work in a micro-step mode, which enables the precise positioning of the valve spool with low energy consumption. The control system structure that was used for positioning, consisting of such an electrohydraulic servo drive with a valve having stepping motors, is described. In the investigations, the following control parameters are considered: the number of stepping motors used, proportional gain coefficients, supply pressure, and desired step distance. Supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton cycle system is a promising closed-loop energy conversion system frequently mentioned in the automotive and power generation field in recent years. To develop a suitable design methodology for S-CO2 turbines with better performance, an understanding of the vortex flow patterns and associated aerodynamic loss inside a S-CO2 turbine is essential. In this paper, a hundred-kilowatt level S-CO2 axial turbine is designed and investigated using a three-dimensional transient viscous flow simulation. The NIST Span and Wagner equation of state model that considers the real gas effects is utilized to estimate the thermodynamic properties of the supercritical fluid. The numerical methods are experimentally validated. The results indicates that the aspect ratio and tip-to-hub ratio are different in the S-CO2 turbine from that in the gas turbine, and the vortex flow patterns are influenced notably by these geometrical parameters.
