Keywords: city logistics, electric vehicles, electromobility, external costs of transport, last-mile delivery, light freight railway, sustainable urban freight transport, urban consolidation centre, zero-emission vehicles
This paper addresses the issue of incorporating rail transport into an urban delivery system. Its main purpose was to identify the possibilities of utilising rail transport in a Zero-emission Urban Delivery System (ZUDS) by applying Light Freight Railway (LFR) electric trains. The study applied the following research methods: literature review, observation, case study, and mathematical computations. In order to estimate the volume of transport external costs reduction resulting from shifting urban deliveries from road to rail transport in the city of Szczecin, the EU methodology was applied to specify the amounts of external costs generated by individual modes and means of transport. The research study showed that application of LFR electric trains makes it possible to significantly reduce external costs generated by transport. Moreover, this solution may have an impact on developing Clean Transport Zones (CTZs) and may also contribute to expansion of the ZUDS. The research study resul... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive PI, equilibrium optimization, Harmony Search algorithm, PID controller, power quality, total harmonic distortion, wind turbine
Power quality can have a large detrimental effect on industrial processes and the commercial sector. Thus, this paper proposes a new technique to improve the power quality of electric power systems. This technique relies on auto-adjusting of the blade angle to mitigate the harmonics in wind generator active power. A new adaptive PI blade-angle controller is applied in this technique to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output power. The parameters of the adaptive PI controller are initialized by using the Harmony Search algorithm (HSA), hybrid Harmony Search optimization and Equilibrium optimization (EO), and hybrid Harmony Search optimization and Teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO). The execution of the optimization algorithms relies mainly on the optimization objective function. Two optimization objective functions are mathematically modeled and compared to enhance the power quality. The first one is to minimize the sum square of error, while the second object... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deviation degree, energy efficiency monitoring, information entropy weight, MSET
An energy efficiency monitoring method of the steam turbine system is studied in this paper. Multivariate state estimation technique (MSET) is utilized to compare the actual monitoring parameters and the healthy data of the equipment in normal working condition with a multi parameter estimation model. Due to the limitation of a single heat rate index in evaluating energy efficiency variation, the energy efficiency deviation degree combined with improved information entropy weight is proposed to judge the steam turbine’s operation condition levels. The index value in the modified weight method has been searched for more steady weight values calculated by information entropy values with small variation. Taking a 600 MW unit as an example, the energy efficiency levels of the unit under a 550 MW normal working condition are clustered into four groups, testifying the MSET model correctness and calculating the deviation degree value. Then, the energy efficiency status monitoring model is uti... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery-discharging mode, dual active bridge converter, standalone wind powergeneration system, variable DC-link voltage control
In this study, we deal with a dual active bridge (DAB) converter-based battery charger in a standalone wind power generation system (WPGS) with a small-scale wind turbine. However, the power conversion efficiency under the low power output in the discharging mode is low. In this paper, we propose variable DC-link voltage control in a standalone WPGS with a DAB converter under a light load. The proposed control can compensate for the shortage of generated power and suppress the peak value of the transformer current. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed control can decrease the peak value of the transformer current and improve the power conversion efficiency of the DAB converter. An experimental setup was constructed to confirm the basic operation of the variable DC-link voltage control. In addition, a reference DC-link voltage switchover control is proposed to enable a high-efficiency drive under all load ranges. From simulation results, the power loss can be reduced by the... Understanding the Key Determinants of Residential Firewood Consumption in Australia: A Nationwide Household Survey
Lygia Romanach, Elisha Frederiks
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: firewood, household energy survey, residential energy consumption, wood energy
A range of energy sources are used by households across the globe, including electricity, gas, solar, and wood. While there is a large body of international research aimed at understanding household energy use in general, very few studies have focused on the specific topic of residential firewood consumption. In Australia, empirical research to investigate and quantify residential firewood consumption is scarce and outdated, despite the importance of such research for better understanding overall household energy costs and carbon emissions. Unlike other power sources, such as electricity, gas and solar, firewood consumption is not systematically monitored or measured in an objective way, thereby making it difficult to obtain accurate data on the amount of firewood consumed in the residential sector. To address this data gap, the current study used survey data from a sample of 4844 households (including 1168 firewood users) to explore what socio-demographic, dwelling-related and behavio... [more]

Keywords: concentration, heat transfer coefficient, LiBr solution, Nusselt number (Nu), plate heat exchanger, pressure drop
In this study, the heat exchange characteristics of water−LiBr solutions used as working fluid in a plate heat exchanger (PHE) were experimentally investigated at various concentrations. To analyze the heat transfer characteristics under LiBr/water conditions, a brazing type plate heat exchanger was installed, and the LiBr concentration on the high-temperature side was controlled at 56%, 58%, 60% and 60%. The results showed that the average heat transfer rate under water/water conditions was higher than that under LiBr/water conditions and the average heat transfer rate decreased as the LiBr concentration on the hot side increased. In addition, under both water/water and LiBr/water conditions, the average heat transfer rate and overall heat transfer coefficient increased as the mass flow rate of the working fluid on the hot side increased. When LiBr was used, the Reynolds number (Re) of LiBr on the hot side was more than nine times lower than that of water at the same mass flow rate ow... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow and heat transfer, polymer additive, supercritical kerosene, turbulent drag reduction
To improve the performance of a high-pressure refueling liquid oxy-kerosene engine, the influence of drag-reducing additive on the heat transfer characteristics in the supercritical flow of kerosene in a microchannel for regenerative cooling is explored. The finite-volume CFD numerical simulation method is applied using the RNG k-ε turbulence model and enhanced wall function. The current work faithfully represents the effect of the drag-reducing additive in kerosene through numerical calculations by combining a 10-component model for the physical properties of the kerosene and the Carreau non-Newtonian fluid constitutive model from rheological measurements. Results suggest that the 10-component kerosene surrogate can describe the supercritical physical properties of kerosene. The inlet temperature, inlet velocity, and the heat flux on the channel wall are driving factors for the supercritical kerosene flow and heat transfer characteristics. The pressure influence on the heat transfer i... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: damage to planetary gear toothed wheels, failure analysis, surface wear processes, wind turbine gear
The article presents selected problems related to an analysis of damage to wind turbine planetary gear. It is the most vital element installed in wind turbines, affecting the operational costs (prolonged downtime), and costs of repairs and servicing including delivery of required components. The authors have analyzed the wear/failure of planetary gear. The process initiating fatigue wear, different from similar devices in other industries, can be easily observed in wind turbine gear. This establishes a specific direction of research into the causes, and early detection of ‘gas spots’ on gear teeth as they seem to trigger fatigue wear.

Keywords: amino acids, dissociation, formation, gas uptake, green chemicals, self-preservation
The self-preservation property of CH4 hydrates is beneficial for the transportation and storage of natural gas in the form of gas hydrates. Few studies have been conducted on the effects of chemicals (kinetic and thermodynamic promoters) on the self-preservation properties of CH4 hydrates, and most of the available literature is limited to pure water. The novelty of this work is that we have studied and compared the kinetics of CH4 hydrate formation in the presence of amino acids (hydrophobic and hydrophilic) when the temperature dropped below 0 °C. Furthermore, we also investigated the self-preservation of CH4 hydrate in the presence of amino acids. The main results are: (1) At T < 0 ℃, the formation kinetics and the total gas uptake improved in the presence of histidine (hydrophilic) at concentrations greater than 3000 ppm, but no significant change was observed for methionine (hydrophobic), confirming the improvement in the formation kinetics (for hydrophilic amino acids) due to... Keywords: electric vehicles, passenger car, powertrain, technology
Transportation is the second-largest sector contributing to greenhouse gas emissions due to CO2 gas generation from the combustion of fossil fuels. Electric vehicles (EVs) are believed to be a great solution to overcome this issue. EVs can reduce CO2 emissions because the vehicles use an electric motor as a propeller instead of an internal combustion engine. Combined with sustainable energy resources, EVs may become zero-emission transportation. This paper presents an overview of the EV drive train types, including their architecture with the benefits and drawbacks of each type. The aim is to summarize the recent progress of EV technology that always continues to be updated. Furthermore, a comparative investigation on energy density and efficiency, specific energy and power, cost, and application is carried out for batteries as the main energy storage. This discussion provides an understanding of the current development of battery technology, especially the batteries used in EVs. Moreo... [more]

Keywords: electrochemical surface area, fuel cell, high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane, Hydrogen, membrane electrode assembly, operating profiles, performance degradation, polarization curve, SAXS analysis
The Energy System lab at the University of Trieste has carried out a study to investigate the reduction in performance of high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane (HTPEM) fuel cell membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) when subjected to different ageing tests. In this study, start and stop cycles, load cycles, open circuit voltage (OCV) permanence and constant load profile were considered. Polarization curves (PC) together with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) data were recorded during the ageing tests to assess the fuel cell performance. In this paper, experimental data are presented to confirm the test methodology previously proposed by the authors and to quantitatively correlate the performance degradation to the operational profiles. It was demonstrated that OCV condition, start and stop and load cycling increase degradation of the MEAs with respect to constant load operation. As expected, the OCV is the operational condition that influen... [more]

Keywords: ANN, combustion modelling, data-driven modelling, Hydrogen, Machine Learning, methane, virtual engine modelling
The achievement of a carbon-free emissions economy is one of the main goals to reduce climate change and its negative effects. Scientists and technological improvements have followed this trend, improving efficiency, and reducing carbon and other compounds that foment climate change. Since the main contributor of these emissions is transportation, detaching this sector from fossil fuels is a necessary step towards an environmentally friendly future. Therefore, an evaluation of alternative fuels will be needed to find a suitable replacement for traditional fossil-based fuels. In this scenario, hydrogen appears as a possible solution. However, the existence of the drawbacks associated with the application of H2-ICE redirects the solution to dual-fuel strategies, which consist of mixing different fuels, to reduce negative aspects of their separate use while enhancing the benefits. In this work, a new combustion modelling approach based on machine learning (ML) modeling is proposed for pre... [more]

The volatility of renewable energy sources (RES) poses a growing problem for operation of electricity grids. In contrary, the necessary decarbonisation of sectors such as heat supply and transport requires a rapid expansion of RES. Load management in the context of power-to-heat systems can help to simultaneously couple the electricity and heat sectors and stabilise the electricity grid, thus enabling a higher share of RES. In addition power-to-hydrogen offers the possibility of long-term energy storage options. Within this work, we present a novel optimization approach for heat pump operation with the aim to counteract the volatility and enable a higher usage of RES. For this purpose, a detailed simulation model of buildings and their energy supply systems is created, calibrated and validated based on a plus energy settlement. Subsequently, the potential of optimized operation is determined with regard to PV and small wind turbine self-consumption. In addition, the potential of season... [more]

Keywords: anion-exchange membrane, electrospinning, fuel cell, nanofiber, proton-exchange membrane
A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that converts the chemical energy of a fuel and oxidant into electricity. Cation-exchange and anion-exchange membranes play an important role in hydrogen fed proton-exchange membrane (PEM) and anion-exchange membrane (AEM) fuel cells, respectively. Over the past 10 years, there has been growing interest in using nanofiber electrospinning to fabricate fuel cell PEMs and AEMs with improved properties, e.g., a high ion conductivity with low in-plane water swelling and good mechanical strength under wet and dry conditions. Electrospinning is used to create either reinforcing scaffolds that can be pore-filled with an ionomer or precursor mats of interwoven ionomer and reinforcing polymers, which after suitable processing (densification) form a functional membrane. In this review paper, methods of nanofiber composite PEMs and AEMs fabrication are reviewed and the properties of these membranes are discussed and contrasted with the properties of fuel ce... [more]

Keywords: concrete lining structure, dynamic contact force, fault dislocation, seismic damage analysis, seismic deterioration effect, tunnel through fault
In order to explore the influences of fault dislocations on tunnel stability under seismic action, a nonlinear dynamic simulation method for the rock−fault contact system is proposed. First, considering the deterioration effect of seismic action on the ultimate bearing load of the contact interface between rock mass and fault, a mathematical model is established reflecting the seismic deterioration laws of the contact interface. Then, based on the traditional point-to-point contact type in a geometric mesh, a point-to-surface contact type is also considered, and an improved dynamic contact force method is established, which considers the large sliding characteristics of the contact interface. According to the proposed method, a dynamic finite element calculation for the flow of the rock−fault contact system is designed, and the accuracy of the method is verified by taking a sliding elastic block as an example. Finally, a three-dimensional (3D) calculation model for a deep tunnel throug... [more]

Keywords: estimation of electricity charging demand, estimation of EV diffusion, EV, floating car data, load profiles
The development and the diffusion of the electromobility is crucial for reducing air pollution and increase sustainable transport. In particular, electrification of private mobility has a significantly role in the energy transition within urban areas, since the progressive substitution of conventional passenger cars by electric vehicles (EVs) leads to the decarbonisation of transport sector without direct emissions. However, increasing EV penetration in the market forces an expansion of the existing charging infrastructure with potential negative impacts on the distribution grid. In this context, a simplified approach is proposed to estimate the energy and power demand owing to the recharge of electric passenger cars within the city of Turin in Italy. This novel approach is based on the usage of floating car data (FCD) to identify the travel behaviour and parking habits of a non-EV passenger car in the city. Mobility data were then used to evaluate EVs energy consumption and charging n... [more]
