Investigation of Pyrolysis Kinetic Triplet, Thermodynamics, Product Characteristics and Reaction Mechanism of Waste Cooking Oil Biodiesel under the Influence of Copper Slag
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: copper slag, kinetic triplet, product characteristics, reaction mechanism, waste cooking oil biodiesel
WCO-Biodiesel can be used as a fuel instead of fossil energy for the copper smelting industry will not only save resources but also protect the environment. The pyrolysis of WCO-Biodiesel in the melting pool is influenced to some extent by the copper slag (CS) generated during the copper smelting process. In this study, the effects of CS on the kinetic triplet, thermodynamics, product characteristics and reaction mechanism of WCO-Biodiesel are comprehensively investigated via a thermogravimetric analyzer and pyrolysis experimental system. Firstly, the apparent activation energy (Eα) is calculated using STR, and Eα decreased at different α under the influence of CS. Then, the trend of the WCO-Biodiesel pyrolysis mechanism with α is determined by the master plots method based on 18 commonly used models similar to the Pn and D1 models. The analysis of WCO-Biodiesel pyrolysis gas products shows that more flammable gases containing H are formed under the influence of CS. The analysis of the... [more]

Determinants of Renewable Energy Consumption in Africa: Evidence from System GMM
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Africa, carbon emission, climate change, economic growth, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The adoption of renewable energy remains Sub-Saharan Africa’s best option to achieve sustainable growth and mitigate climate change. The essence of this study is to examine the factors that determine the adoption of renewable energy adoption in Africa by employing the System Generalized Methods-Of-Moment (GMM) to analyze data sourced from 1990 to 2019 on some selected African economies. The study examined the tripartite role of the economic, environmental, and socio-political factors on renewable energy adoption in Africa and noted that a positive relationship exists between economic and renewable energy adoption, supporting the validity of the feedback hypothesis. Hence, a policy that supports simultaneous growth of the economy and renewable energy could be adopted. The results further show that environmental factors such as carbon emission and ecological footprint negatively impact renewable energy (RE) adoption in Sub-Saharan African economies. The impact of socio-political factors... [more]

Economic Performance Indicators for a Geothermal Aquatic Center in Victoria, Australia
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Australia, economic performance analysis, geothermal energy, Gippsland, levelized cost of heat, payback period
The Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre (GRAC) opened in the town of Traralgon, Victoria, Australia early in 2021. The GRAC utilizes a geothermal energy heating system as an alternative to conventional natural gas furnaces. We have examined 12 full months of heat production from the geothermal system of the GRAC and compared its economic performance against equivalent heat production by natural gas. The geothermal system—the first of its kind in Victoria—operated at >95% availability over its first year of operation. Our economic assessment indicates that the breakeven price for the geothermal energy is about 35% the equivalent price of natural gas and the payback period for the geothermal system is about five years. The results justify the initial capital outlay by Latrobe City Council and are likely to stimulate further development of geothermal heat systems in the region.

Impact of the Evaporation Temperature on the Air Drying Rate for a Finned Heat Exchanger
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: drying, evaporator, finned heat exchanger, heat exchanger, heat pump, SMER
This paper presents the thermal calculations of an air-finned heat exchanger working at temperatures above zero degrees and their verification through testing on a real device. Then, on the basis of the calculations, the influence of evaporation temperature on the drying rate of the constant speed of air flowing through the exchanger was analysed. A quantitative analysis of the effect of the temperature difference between the air being dried and the evaporator on the acceleration of the process was performed. For the analysed case, the same water mass (condensate) can be obtained for an evaporation temperature of 0 °C almost four times faster than for 10 °C. To compare temperature cases, the SMER (specific moisture evaporation ratio) was calculated, which allowed the systems to be compared in terms of energy consumption. The theoretical analysis showed that by reducing the boiling point by 10 degrees, we could increase the SMER from 0.51 kgh20/kWh to 2.18 kgh20/kWh. After receiving the... [more]

Data-Driven Model for Real-Time Estimation of NOx in a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion modeling, compression ignition engine, experimental data processing and analysis, Machine Learning, model validation
The automotive sector is greatly contributing to pollutant emissions and recent regulations introduced the need for a major control of, and reduction of, internal combustion engine emissions. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have proven to hold the potential to be the thrust in the state-of-the-art for engine-out emission prediction, thus enabling tailored calibration modes and control solutions. More specifically, the scientific literature has recently witnessed strong efforts in AI applications for the development of nitrogen oxides (NOx) virtual sensors. These latter replace physical sensors and exploit AI algorithms to estimate NOx concentrations in real-time. Still, the calibration of the algorithms, together with the appropriate choice of the specific metric, strongly affects the prediction capability. In the present paper, a machine learning-based virtual sensor for NOx monitoring in diesel engines was developed, based on the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine le... [more]

Optimization-Based Operation of District Heating Networks: A Case Study for Two Real Sites
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: district heating, mixed-integer linear problem, Optimization, renewable energy sources, unit commitment
To achieve the ambitious targets of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, there is a need for change in all parts of society, industry, and mobility, as well as in all energy sectors. For this purpose, sector coupling plays a crucial role, e.g., in the form of coupling the electricity with the heat sector using power-to-heat systems. In this article, the effects of the integration of intermittent wind energy via a direct cable, as well as the integration of a boiler into district heating systems powered by a biomass plant and/or a gas boiler, are investigated. Sector coupling in the district heating networks is achieved via the integration of a boiler connected to a local grid station and the use of two air-to-water and two water-to-water heat pumps, which are solely powered by electricity produced by local wind turbines. Furthermore, this work evaluates the economic impacts of the exploding energy prices on the sustainability of district heating systems. Our analysis shows that d... [more]

Probing the Pre-Ignition Behavior of Negative Temperature Coefficient Fuels at Low to High Temperatures: A Case Study of Dimethyl Ether
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Dimethyl Ether, NTC fuels, physical-based criteria, pre-ignition
Pre-ignition, involving complex interactions of physical and chemical processes, occurs not only in actual combustion engines but also in fundamental research equipment such as rapid compression machines and shock tubes. Thus, identifying the combustion conditions prone to pre-ignition is critical for the interpretation of ignition data and fuel design. Shock tube experiments with dimethyl ether (DME) were carried out in this study to investigate the pre-ignition behavior during fuel auto-ignition. The experimental conditions included a wide range of temperatures (620−1370 K), pressures (1−9 atm), and equivalence ratios (0.5−5.0). The results indicate that pre-ignition of DME is prone to occur in the transition region from a high temperature to an intermediate temperature (~1000 K), and the decrease in pressure and equivalency ratio will aggravate the pre-ignition behavior. Theoretical analysis was then performed using four physical-based criteria: temperature perturbation sensitivity... [more]

Anode Nitrogen Concentration Estimation Based on Voltage Variation Characteristics for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Stacks
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anode nitrogen concentration, estimation, fuel cell stack, performance degradation, voltage variation characteristics
Hydrogen energy has become an important way to solve energy crises owing to its non-pollution, high level of efficiency, and wide application. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have received wide attention as an energy conversion device for hydrogen energy. The hydrogen concentration in the PEMFC anode directly determines the output voltage of the stack. The performance of the PEMFC gradually decreases due to the accumulation of nitrogen. However, the continuous circulation of anode gas and the nitrogen accumulation at the anode due to transmembrane diffusion lead to difficulties in estimating the anode gas concentration. The relationship between anode nitrogen concentration and voltage variation characteristics was studied by increasing the anode hydrogen concentration through the method of increasing nitrogen concentration and conducting experiments on a 16-cell stack. In this paper, an estimation method for nitrogen concentration in the anode is proposed to evaluate the n... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: binary mixture, diffusion spinodal, heat transfer enhancement, liquid–liquid phase separation, liquid–vapour critical curve, lower critical solution temperature, pulse heating
This article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of superheating of partially miscible mixtures having a lower critical solution temperature and the thermal effect accompanying the relaxation of an unstable mixture, within the framework of the problem of high-density heat flux removal. The study was carried out by using the method of the controlled pulse heating of a platinum wire probe. The characteristic heating time was from 0.2 to 180 ms. The superheating degree of the mixture relative to the diffusion spinodal exceeded 100 K. The heat flux density from the heater surface reached 13.7 MW/m2. The object of research was an aqueous solution of polypropylene glycol-425 (PPG-425). The obtained results clearly indicate that such mixtures can be used as coolants in processes where the possibility of powerful local heat release cannot be excluded. They also form the basis for expanding the phase diagram by involving in the study not-fully-stable and unstable states of the mixture.

Influence of Battery Energy, Charging Power, and Charging Locations upon EVs’ Ability to Meet Trip Needs
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: charging power, electric vehicle, EV, EV access equity, EV range, light vehicles, travel requirements
One year of high-resolution driving data from a sample of 333 instrumented gasoline passenger vehicles are used to create a trip inventory of U.S. vehicle travel requirements. A set of electric vehicles (EVs) is modeled, differing in battery size (kWh), recharging power (kW), and locations for charging when parked. Each modeled EV’s remaining energy is tracked while traversing the entire sample’s trip inventory in order to estimate how well each EV meets all U.S. driving requirements. The capital cost of refueling infrastructure is estimated per car, for gasoline and for each analyzed combination of charging station locations. We develop three metrics of the ability of different EV characteristics to meet trip requirements: the percentage of trips successfully met by each modeled EV, the number of days that the driver must “adapt” EV use to meet more demanding trip requirements, and the total driver time required for refueling. We also segment the market of trip patterns per car, findi... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: in situ conversion process, multi-physics field, numerical analysis, oil shale, production evaluation, thermo-hydro-chemical coupled model
The in situ conversion process (ICP) is a retorting method pyrolyzing the kerogen in shale into oil and gas products, which shows great potential to promote the recovery of oil shale resources. In this work, a thermo-hydro-chemical-coupled model for the in situ conversion process is established, considering the temperature dependence of key properties and the transverse isotropy caused by the layered characteristics of oil shale. Based on the proposed model, a series of simulations is conducted to evaluate the production performance of the in situ conversion process of oil shale reservoirs. The results indicate that energy efficiency reaches a maximum of 2.7 around the fifth year of the heating process, indicating the feasibility of in situ conversion technology. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis shows that the heating temperature should be higher than 300 °C to avoid the energy output being less than the energy input, and the oil/gas ratio decreases with increasing heating tempera... How Acid Washing Nickel Foam Substrates Improves the Efficiency of the Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: acid washing, alkaline water electrolysis, electrode preparation, hydrogen evolution reaction, nickel foam
Nickel foam substrates are frequently utilised as porous 3D substrates for renewable energy applications. The preparation of these substrates usually includes an acid-washing step, but the degree to which this step affects the final electrochemical performance after spray-coating a catalyst ink is unreported. Herein, we report the effects of acid washing through physicochemical and electrochemical characterisation. The electrochemical performance was determined through repeated measurements of catalyst-coated nickel foam substrates both with and without the initial step of acid washing. It was found that acid washing increased the current density by 17.9% for the acid-treated MoS2-coated nickel foam electrode. This increment was affiliated with an electrochemically active surface area that increased by 11.2%, and a Tafel analysis indicated that the acid-treated MoS2-coated electrodes facilitated the initial water dissociation step of the hydrogen evolution reaction with greater ease. Keywords: demand response, distributed generation, flexibility
Balancing in a distributed generation network is an increasingly difficult task because of the increasing number of residential prosumers on the power network. This paper proposes a framework for the estimation, as well as the prediction of the power flexibility of residential prosumers. In order to quantify the residential buildings’ demand flexibility, a thermoelectric simulation model of a typical residential house was developed based on first engineering principles. Based on the calculated flexibility values, a simple prediction method was used to give a short-term forecast of the prosumer flexibility. The results were validated by simulation experiments incorporating real data for four different scenarios.

Dissociation and Combustion of a Layer of Methane Hydrate Powder: Ways to Increase the Efficiency of Combustion and Degassing
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion, gas hydrate dissociation, heat transfer, methane gas hydrate
The interest in natural gas hydrates is due both to huge natural reserves and to the strengthened role of environmentally friendly energy sources conditioned by the deterioration of the global environmental situation. The combustion efficiency increase is associated with the development of understanding of both the processes of dissociation and combustion of gas hydrates. To date, the problems of dissociation and combustion have, as a rule, been considered separately, despite their close interrelation. Usually, during combustion, there is a predetermined methane flow from the powder surface. In the present paper, the combustion of methane hydrate is simulated taking into account the non-stationary dissociation process in the powder layer. Experimental studies on the methane hydrate dissociation at negative temperatures have been carried out. It is shown that due to the increase in the layer temperature and changes in the porosity of the layer over time, i.e., coalescence of particles,... [more]

Optimization Control Strategy for Large Doubly-Fed Induction Generator Wind Farm Based on Grouped Wind Turbine
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), grouped reactive power control, maximum active power output, wind farm, wind power generation
This paper proposes a grouped, reactive power optimization control strategy to maximize the active power output of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based on a large wind farm (WF). Optimization problems are formulated based on established grouped loss models and the reactive power limits of the wind turbines (WTs). The WTs in the WF are grouped to relieve computational burden. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is applied to optimize the distribution of reactive power among groups, and a proportional control strategy is used to distribute the reactive power requirements in each group. Furthermore, the proposed control strategy optimizes the reactive power distribution between the stator and the grid side converter (GSC) in each WT. The proposed control strategy greatly reduces the number of variables for optimization, and increases the calculation speed of the algorithm. Thus, the control strategy can not only increase the active power output of the WF but also enab... [more]

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: demand response, dynamic pricing, electricity tariff, Genetic Algorithm, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
This paper proposes a novel dynamic pricing scheme for demand response with individualized tariffs by consumption profile, aiming to benefit both customers and utility. The proposed method is based on the genetic algorithm, and a novel operator called mutagenic agent is proposed to improve algorithm performance. The demand response model is set by using price elasticity theory, and simulations are conducted based on elasticity, demand, and photovoltaic generation data from Brazil. Results are evaluated considering the integration effects of renewable energy sources and compared with other two pricing strategies currently adopted by Brazilian utilities: flat tariff and time-of-use tariff. Simulation results show the proposed dynamic tariff brings benefits to both utilities and consumers. It reduces the peak load and average cost of electricity and increases utility profit and load factor without the undesirable rebound effect.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: passivation, perovskite solar cells, surface reconstruction
Perovskite solar cells have achieved remarkable enhancement in their performance in recent years. However, to get an entrance to the photovoltaic market, great effort is still necessary to further improve their efficiency as well as their long-term stability under various conditions. Among various types of approaches (including compositional engineering, dopant engineering, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), et al.), interfacial engineering through passivation treatment has been considered as one of the most effective strategies to reduce the non-radiative recombination within the PSCs. Thus, this short review summaries recent efforts on chemical interfacial passivation strategies from a different perspective owing to their common phenomena of reconstructing the perovskite surface via the formation of three-dimensional perovskite, low-dimensional perovskite and synergistic effect provided by a mixed-salt passivation system, respectively.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, chemical-looping gasification, DFB, DRI, gasification, iron reduction, negative emissions, steelmaking
A dual fluidized bed (DFB) gasification process is proposed to produce sustainable reducing gas for the direct reduction (DR) of iron ore. This novel steelmaking route is compared with the established process for DR, which is based on natural gas, and with the emerging DR technology using electrolysis-generated hydrogen as the reducing gas. The DFB-DR route is found to produce reducing gas that meets the requirement of the DR reactor, based on existing MIDREX plants, and which is produced with an energetic efficiency comparable with the natural gas route. The DFB-DR path is the only route considered that allows negative CO2 emissions, enabling a 145% decrease in emissions relative to the traditional blast furnace−basic oxygen furnace (BF−BOF) route. A reducing gas cost between 45−60 EUR/MWh is obtained, which makes it competitive with the hydrogen route, but not the natural gas route.
