Thermal Behavior and Kinetics of Shenmu Coal Pyrolyzed under Hydrogen-Rich or Methane-Gas-Rich Atmosphere
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: activation energy, distributed activation energy model (DAEM), pyrolytic atmosphere, pyrolytic properties, thermogravimetric analysis
The pyrolysis characteristics of Shenmu coal under an atmosphere containing H2 (40%) and another containing CH4 (40%) were studied via a thermogravimetric analysis, and the kinetic parameters of pyrolysis were calculated by using a distributed activation energy model (DAEM). The results showed that H2 promoted the cleavage of CH-like functional groups by providing reactive hydrogen groups to combine with CH groups and −OH groups in the coal. However, the H2 and CH4 atmosphere inhibits the cleavage of oxygen-containing functional groups such as carbonyl groups and C−O groups, and this is unfavorable to the production of CO2 and CO. The pyrolysis weight-loss rate of raw coal decreases with the increase of the heating rate, and the weight-loss curve shifts to the high-temperature region. At the same conversion rate and pyrolysis temperature, the activation energy of pyrolysis under the H2 and CH4 atmospheres is lower than that under the N2 atmosphere, and the activation energy does not co... Assessment of Energy Consumption Characteristics of Ultra-Heavy-Duty Vehicles under Real Driving Conditions
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air drag coefficient, Carbon Dioxide, fuel consumption rate, heavy-duty vehicle, payload, rolling resistance
Passenger cars account for the largest share of GHG emissions in the road sector. However, given that the number of heavy-duty vehicles registered is lower but accounts for about a quarter of GHG emissions in the road sector, it is necessary to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by improving the fuel efficiency of heavy-duty vehicles. However, experiments using dynamometers during the vehicle development process consume a lot of time and cost. Conversely, simulations can quantitatively analyze the sensitivity of parameters and accelerate optimization. Therefore, in this study, we modeled a heavy-duty vehicle using an AVL Cruise simulation and analyzed the effects of payload, air drag coefficient, and rolling resistance on fuel economy, CO2 emission, and the valid window ratio among the moving average window (MAW) for three driving routes. When the average vehicle speed was higher, the effect of the air drag coefficient on fuel economy was high. Additionally, when the average vehicle... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: nanostructure, photocurrent spectrum, PS, Schottky barrier, spectral dependences, surface-barrier structures
This work investigates the surface-barrier photoelectric properties of Au-palladium-n-GaP structures. Research into the visible spectrum region, under the action of both linearly polarized and natural radiation, provides us with new information about the height of the barrier, the interface m-s section, and the GaP band structure. SBs based on GaP (p- and n-type) are helpful for researchers in developing advantageous structures for creating various photovoltaic devices—photodetectors for fiber-optic control of energy systems or possible structures for solar energy. Despite many years of research, issues concerning the band structure of semiconductors based on the phenomenon of photoelectroactive absorption in such surface-barrier structures’ m-s remain urgent in the creation of new high-performance devices. Such structures may also be interesting for creating solar energy systems. They create a thin insulating dielectric layer (usually an oxide layer) in solar cells on SBs between the... [more]

Optimal Cooperative Power Management Framework for Smart Buildings Using Bidirectional Electric Vehicle Modes
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: collective power management, demand-side management, electric vehicle, peak load, smart charging management, smart homes
The high potential for implementing demand management approaches across multiple objectives has been significantly enhanced. This study proposes a cooperative energy management strategy based on the end-user sharing of energy. The proposed method promotes the intelligent charging and discharging of EVs to achieve vehicle-to-anything (V2X) and anything-to-vehicle (X2V) operating modes for both integrated and nonrenewable residential applications. These sharing modes have already been discussed, but resolution approaches are applicable to a specific use case. Other application cases may require additional metrics to plan the fleet of electric vehicles. To avoid that problem, this study proposes the MIP method using a robust Gurobi optimiser based on a generic framework for cooperative power management (CPM). Moreover, the CPM ensures an overall target state of charge (SoC) at leaving time for all the vehicles without generating a rebound peak in total grid power, even without introducing... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: data-driven machine learning, lithium-ion battery, RUL prediction, SOH estimation, stacking regressor
The development of a machine-learning method with high accuracy, high generalization, and strong robustness for evaluating battery health states is essential in the field of battery health management. In this work, the data-driven stacking regressor (SR) method with a two-layer diagnostic framework was proposed to estimate the state of health (SOH) and predict the remaining useful life (RUL). Five individual estimators were merged in the first layer, including bagging, gradient boosting regression (GBR), support vector regression (SVR), Hist-GBR, and AdaBoost, and linear regression (LR) was used in the second layer to construct the SR model. The SR model produces highly accurate results without the requirement of excessive parameter adjustment. Fifteen batteries from the NASA dataset were used for our experiments, resulting in rather low values of average root mean square error (ARMSE) and relative error (RE) for the SOH estimation and RUL predictions of the different batteries, demons... Evaluation of Mathematical Models for CO2 Frost Formation in a Cryogenic Moving Bed
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Capture, cryogenic separation, desublimation, moving bed heat exchanger (MBHE)
Moving bed heat exchangers (MBHE)s are used in industrial applications including waste heat recovery and the drying of solids. As a result, energy balance models have been developed to simulate the heat transfer between a moving bed and the gas phase. Within these energy balance models, phase change of components within the gas phase has not been considered as the liquefaction or desublimation of the gas phase does not occur in typical industrial applications. However, available energy balance models for cryogenic CO2 capture (CCC) have only focused on fixed packed beds. The development of a suitable energy balance model to predict the energy duties for MBHEs that include phase change would be beneficial for CCC applications. This work investigated the development of moving bed energy balance models for the design of moving bed columns that involve phase change of CO2 into frost, using existing models for MBHEs and fixed-bed CCC capture. The models were evaluated by comparison with ava... [more]

Towards a Power Production from 100% Renewables: The Italian Case Study
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Storage, energy surplus, power to X, renewable energy integration
The need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is driving many actions to decarbonize the most impactful sectors. Among these, the energy sector accounts for almost one third of emissions. Increasing the penetration of renewable energy in the energy mix could easily reduce the emissions of this sector. Theoretically, the target to aim for would be 100% renewable energy production. However, the variable nature of power production from photovoltaic and wind systems, which are expected to play a key role in the energy transition, may pose several limitations to the effective penetration of renewable energy. Many concerns arise when one considers the large diffusion of renewable energy that would be required to meet green targets, and the operating conditions of other systems in charge of compensating for renewable energy variations. This study aims to investigate the potential impact of an increase in the amount of renewable energy installed in a country, particularly in Italy. A simplified... [more]
