Hybrid System of Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal Technologies for Industrial Process Heat
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hybrid solar heating systems, solar assisted heat pumps, solar collectors, solar industrial process heating
Process heating is the activity with the most energy consumption in the industrial sector. Solar heating (SH) systems are a promising alternative to provide renewable thermal energy to industrial processes. However, factors such as high investment costs and area limitations in industrial facilities hinder their utilization; therefore, hybrid systems that combine two different solar thermal or photovoltaic technologies where each technology operates under conditions that allow a higher overall performance than conventional configurations have been proposed. In this review, we discuss the limitations of conventional SH systems and the potential of hybrid configurations to overcome them. First, the current literature about conventional and hybrid systems is presented. Then, the application of common performance indicators to evaluate hybrid configurations is analyzed. Finally, the limitation, advantages, and potential applications of conventional and hybrid systems are discussed. This wor... [more]

Two-Outputs Nonlinear Grey Box Model for Lithium-Ion Batteries
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery management system, battery models, electric forklift, nonlinear grey box battery model, two-outputs nonlinear grey box model
Storing energy efficiently is one of the main factors of a more sustainable world. The battey management system in energy storage plays an extremely important role in ensuring these systems’ efficiency, safety, and performance. This battery management system is capable of estimating the battery states, which are used to give better efficiency, a long life cycle, and safety. However, these states cannot be measured directly and must be estimated indirectly using battery models. Therefore, accurate battery models are essential for battery management systems implementation. One of these models is the nonlinear grey box model, which is easy to implement in embedded systems and has good accuracy when used with a good parameter identification method. Regarding the parameter identification methods, the nonlinear least square optimization is the most used method. However, to have accurate results, it is necessary to define the system’s initial states, which is not an easy task. This paper pres... [more]

Energy Costs Reduction for Dispersion Using a Jet-Slot Type Milk Homogenizer
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dispersion, fat globule, jet homogenizer, milk dispersing, power, specific energy consumption
The priority task of the milk processing industry is in reducing the specific energy consumption of milk fat dispersion while simultaneously ensuring a high dispersion of milk emulsion. One of the possible ways to solve this problem is by developing and implementing a little-studied jet milk homogenizer of the slot type. In it, homogenization occurs by implementing the method of the separate feeding of cream, which allows creating the maximum difference between the speeds of skim milk and cream, which is a necessary condition for effective dispersion. Analytical dependences have been found that relate power and specific energy consumption to the performance of a milk homogenizer with the separate cream supply, the diameter of the annular gap, the fat content of normalized milk and cream, and the cream supply speed. The rational value of the fat content of the cream used for homogenization is analytically substantiated; in order to reduce the specific energy consumption of the process,... [more]

The Impact of Windows Replacement on Airtightness and Energy Consumption of a Single Apartment in a Multi-Family Residential Building in Montenegro: A Case Study
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: airtightness, blower door, energy consumption, residential buildings, windows replacement
One of the important factors influencing the thermal performance of buildings is the leakage of the envelope. When it comes to Montenegro, although there is a formal airtightness requirement, air permeability tests are not mandatory and therefore there is a lack of data in this regard. This paper reports the results of fan pressurization tests on a single apartment in a multi-family residential building before and after replacing the windows. The replacement of old wooden windows with new UPVC ones, provided that the installation is carefully supervised, proved to be an effective air tightening measure, as it resulted in a reduction of air change rate at the reference building pressure from 6.25 h−1 to 0.77 h−1, or by nearly 90%. The energy impact of air leakage was evaluated using the national software for calculating the energy performance of buildings based on the DIN V 18599 methodology. Calculations showed that by reducing infiltration, significant energy savings for heating can b... [more]

Comparative Analysis of the Overall Efficiency of a Hydraulic Pump Unit with and without a Separate Pre-Charging System
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: efficiency, energy loss, hydraulic open system, hydraulic power pack, hydraulic pre-charging system
The overall efficiency and energy consumption problem in hydraulic power pack units with and without an additional pre-charging system was analyzed in this paper. A theoretical mathematical model was developed for calculating energy losses in both pump unit structures. To verify the theoretical relationships, a laboratory test stand was built, upon which the results of calculating the overall efficiency were compared with the results of the laboratory tests. Universal diagrams of the overall efficiency dependence as a function of pressure load and geometric adjustment of the main pump’s working volume were created for the case of a particular hydraulic pump unit without and with a pre-charging system. Based on this, discussions were carried out on whether and the way in which the additionally pre-charging system affects the parameters of the overall efficiency characteristics of the researched pump unit. Additionally, the dependence of the optimal pressure load and the maximum overall... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: maximum power point tracking, partial shading, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Solar Photovoltaic
Renewable Energy technologies are becoming suitable options for fast and reliable universal electricity access for all. Solar photovoltaic, being one of the RE technologies, produces variable output power (due to variations in solar radiation, cell, and ambient temperatures), and the modules used have low conversion efficiency. Therefore, maximum power point trackers are needed to harvest more power from the sun and to improve the efficiency of photovoltaic systems. This paper reviews the methods used for maximum power point tracking in photovoltaic systems. These methods have been classified into conventional, intelligent, optimization, and hybrid techniques. A comparison has also been made of the different methods based on criteria such as tracking speed, efficiency, cost, stability, and complexity of implementation. From the literature, it is clear that hybrid techniques are highly efficient compared to conventional methods but are more complex in design and more expensive than the... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blade design, control, low-Reynolds airfoil, wind tunnel, wind turbine
In this paper we report about the design and validation of a 1.2 m wind turbine rotor with fixed blade pitch. The wind turbine is a scaled version of the DTU 10 MW. Integrated design of dimensional scaling laws, blade aerodynamics, and turbine control is carried out to reproduce blade loading and interaction with atmospheric boundary layer of the reference turbine, despite challenges posed by the great reduction in chord-based Reynolds number. The rotor is verified with numerical simulations in OpenFAST and wind tunnel testing. The servo-aerodynamic design approach proposed in this article is shown to be successful for small-scale wind turbine models for use in experiments about wakes and floating wind.

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery capacity, building complex, photovoltaic, self-consumption, self-sufficiency
Photovoltaic (PV) systems have been growing in popularity as an energy conservation and carbon reduction approach. Generally, battery storage is integrated with a PV system to solve the intermittent and fluctuant problems of solar resources, enhancing the relative independence of the PV−battery (PVB) system. In consideration of the economic benefits and system efficiency, it is necessary to investigate battery capacity allocation methods. A battery capacity configuration method was established in this study to increase the self-sufficiency rate (SSR) and self-consumption rate (SCR) of the system for a building complex by exploiting the battery resources. The PVB system designed for the building complex is divided into two categories: distributed and centralized storage. The SSR and SCR significantly increase with the increasing battery capacity for both schemes. The SCR of centralized storage is always higher than that of distributed storage, considering different battery and PV capaci... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Conveyor Belt, hydrokinetic energy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Renewable energy technologies can help us combat climate change and hydrokinetic energy conversion systems could play a major role. The simplicity of hydrokinetic devices helps us to exploit renewable sources, especially in remote locations, which is not possible with conventional methods. A new type of hydrokinetic device called the Energy Conveyor Belt was designed, which works on the concept of conveyor belt technology. Numerical simulations are performed on the design of the Energy Conveyor Belt with Ansys FLUENT to optimize its performance. Some of the optimized models produced a maximum power slightly above 1 kW. The numerical results are then compared to the experimental results of other hydrokinetic turbines. The compactness and flexibility of the design give the Energy Conveyor Belt an advantage over other hydrokinetic devices in regions with fluctuating water levels. Further research has to be undertaken into cascading systems to increase the overall power generated by the sy... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: car sharing, electric vehicles, electromobility, shared mobility, sustainable mobility
Car-sharing services are developing at an ever-increasing pace. Taking into account the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and pursuit of the sustainable development of transport, implementing electric cars in car-sharing fleets is being proposed. On the one hand, these types of vehicles are referred to as emission-free, but on the other hand, their environmental friendliness is questionable due to the emission of carbon dioxide during the production of energy to power them. Although many scientific papers are devoted to the issue of reducing emissions through car sharing, there is a research gap concerning the real production of carbon dioxide by car-sharing vehicles during car-sharing trips. To fill this research gap, the objective of the article was to analyze the actual level of carbon dioxide emissions from combustion and electric vehicles from car-sharing systems produced when renting rides. Multi-Objective-Based Charging and Discharging Coordination of Plug-in Electric Vehicle Integrating Capacitor and OLTC
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: charging coordination, cost minimization, discharging coordination, plug-in electric vehicle
The integration of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in residential distribution networks demands a significant amount of electrical load where random and uncoordinated charging affects the quality and performance of the distribution network. Random and uncoordinated charging may increase the peak demand and can increase stress on critical network assets such as line, transformer, and switching devices. Moreover, the charging of PEVs in a low network reduces the voltage of the system below the lower limit. On the other hand, using PEVs as storage in the V2G mode can improve the network condition. Therefore, it is critical to properly manage the charging and discharging operation of PEVs. This paper proposes a multi-objective-based charging and discharging coordination of PEVs with the operation of the capacitor and on-load tap changer (OLTC). With the proposed strategy, the distribution network is operated safely, and charging is ensured for all PEVs connected to the network. The main c... [more]

Reservoir characteristics and the occurrence mechanism of shale gas outside of the Sichuan Basin are the research hotspots of normally pressured shales in China. Taking shales on the Anchang syncline from the periphery of the Sichuan Basin as an example, X-ray diffraction, organic geochemistry, and rock physical experiments were carried out to analyze the reservoir characteristics and their main geological controls on the normally pressured shales. The mineralogical results show that the studied shales from the Anchang syncline are mainly siliceous shales with a high quartz content (average of 57%). The quartz content of these normally pressured shales is of biological origin, as shown by the positive correlation between the quartz and organic carbon (TOC) contents. The average porosity of the studied shales is about 2.9%, which is lower than shales inside the Sichuan Basin. Drainage Research of Different Tubing Depth in the Horizontal Gas Well Based on Laboratory Experimental Investigation and a New Liquid-Carrying Model
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fluid energy, gas drainage, horizontal gas well, liquid-carrying model, tubing depth
Since the structure of horizontal gas wells is more intricate than that of vertical wells, there is a lack of consistency in the form of liquid-carrying in different portions. Applying the commonly utilized liquid-carrying hypothesis of vertical gas wells into horizontal gas wells is therefore challenging. The maximum liquid volume that the gas flow could raise, the gas flow rate, and the maximum amount of energy that could be produced from a specific amount of gas flow should all be considered when determining the liquid volume that the gas flow could lift. This study is the first to integrate theoretical analysis with laboratory testing to analyze the gas−liquid flow law of drainage stability at varied tubing depths. The impact of gas drainage stability is then verified through the laboratory experiments. The novel model of various tubing depths, which is based on the energy of inflow and outflow from the horizontal well, is cleverly built. According to the study, the fluctuation is... [more]

The accumulation of energy from non-programmable renewable sources is a crucial aspect for the energy transition. Using surplus electricity from renewable energy sources, power-to-gas plants allow to produce a substitute natural gas (SNG) that can be injected in the existing infrastructure for large-scale and long-term energy storage, contributing to gas grid decarbonisation. Keywords: crude oil, gold market, portfolio implications, risk spillover effects, stock market
We analyze crude oil’s dependence and the risk spillover effect on the Chinese stock market and the gold market. We compare both static and dynamic copula functions and calculate the average upward and downward spillover effect using the time-varying Copula model and the conditional value-at-risk approach. By utilizing daily data on crude oil prices, China’s stock market, and the gold market, we observe an asymmetric spillover effect: the downside spillover effects from crude oil prices on the Chinese stock market and gold market are larger than the upside spillover effect. We then identify changes in the structure of the sample periods and calculate the dynamic conditional correlation between them. In addition, we explore the optimal weight and hedge ratios in diversified portfolios to mitigate potential risks. Our results suggest that investors and portfolio managers should frequently adjust their portfolio strategies, particularly during extreme events like COVID-19, when financial... [more]
