David Pérez Granados, Mauricio Alberto Ortega Ruiz, Joel Moreira Acosta, Sergio Arturo Gama Lara, Roberto Adrián González Domínguez, Pedro Jacinto Páramo Kañetas
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: accelerometer, Machine Learning, vibration monitoring, wind energy, wind turbine
Wind energy is one of the most relevant clean energies today, so wind turbines must have good health and be reliable in operation. Current wind turbines have slender and elastic structures that can be easily damaged through vibrations and compromise their health; therefore, vibration monitoring is essential to ensure safe operation. Here, we present a method for simple wind turbine vibration monitoring in the laboratory by means of an accelerometer placed on a weathervane under different scenarios, with recording of different amplitudes of vibrations caused at a constant speed of 10 km/h. The variables, trends, and data captured during vibration monitoring were then used to implement a prediction system of synthetic failure using machine learning methods such as: Medium Trees, Cubic SVN, Logistic Regression Kernel, Optimized Neural Network, and Bagged Trees, with the last demonstrating an accuracy of up to 0.87%.

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: design, hybrid MPPT, Optimization, panels, solar battery storage, wind turbine
The study presents an optimal control approach for managing a hybrid Photovoltaic/Wind Turbine/Battery system in an isolated area. The system includes multiple energy sources connected to a DC bus through DC/DC converters for maximum power point tracking. The proposed hybrid MPPT approach (HMPPT) manages the energy production from different sources, while the power flow method is used to balance the load and renewable power. The study shows that integrating the HMPPT algorithm and power flow approach results in improved system performance, including increased power generation and reduced stress on the batteries. The study also proposes an accurate sizing method to further improve system efficiency. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach by presenting results for twelve different days with varying weather conditions. The results show that the proposed approach effectively manages the energy production and load, resulting in optimal system performance. This stu... [more]
Multi-Array Design for Hydrokinetic Turbines in Hydropower Canals
Luca Cacciali, Lorenzo Battisti, Sergio Dell’Anna
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: backwater, blockage ratio, hydrokinetic turbines, In-Stream Hydrokinetics, turbine arrays
The design of hydrokinetic plants in hydropower canals involves the choice of the array layout, rotor geometry, turbine spacing, and array spacing, and necessitates the control of the resultant backwater to avoid upstream flooding hazards. Several works in the literature have shown that array power optimization is feasible with small spacings between the arrays, disregarding the limitation in the power output induced by backwater upstream. In this study, a 1-D channel model with a Double Multiple Streamtube code and wake sub-models are integrated to predict an array layout that will maximize the array power. The outputs of the conducted sensitivity analysis confirm that this design enabled improved power conversion with closely spaced turbines and largely spaced arrays, thus allowing for a partial recovery of the total head variation for a new array deployed upstream. In addition to the quantitative assessment of the mechanical power converted, the tool enables depth control from the d... [more]
Generalised Isentropic Relations in Thermodynamics

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compressibility, compressible fluid flows, isentropic relations, isentropic work, real gas thermodynamics, speed of sound
Isentropic processes in thermodynamics are fundamental to our understanding of numerous physical phenomena across different scientific and engineering fields. They provide a theoretical reference case for the evaluation of real thermodynamic processes and observations. Yet, as analytical relations for isentropic transformations in gas dynamics are limited to ideal gases, the inability to analytically describe isentropic processes for non-ideal gases is a fundamental shortcoming. This work presents generalised isentropic relations in thermodynamics based on the work by Kouremenos et al., where three isentropic exponents γPv, γTv and γPT are introduced to replace the ideal gas isentropic exponent γ to incorporate the departure from the non-ideal gas behaviour. The general applicability of the generalised isentropic relations is presented by exploring its connections to existing isentropic models for ideal gases and incompressible liquids. Generalised formulations for the speed of sound,... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3-D inversion, Gonghe Basin, hot dry rock, satellite gravity data
The Gonghe Basin is one of the most important regions for the exploration and development of hot dry rock geothermal resources in China. However, there is still some controversy about the main heat source of hot dry rock geothermal resources in the Gonghe Basin. Combined with previous research results including three-dimensional magnetotelluric imaging and linear inversion of Rayleigh wave group and phase velocity result, we obtained a high-resolution underground spatial density distribution model of the Gonghe Basin based on satellite gravity data by using 3-D gravity focusing inversion method. According to the results, there are widely distributed low density anomalies relative to surrounding rock in the middle crust of the study area. The low-density layer is speculated to be a low-velocity, high-conductivity partial melting layer in the crust of the Gonghe Basin. The inversion result confirms for the first time the existence of a partial melt layer from the gravity point of view, a... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chemical kinetics, dielectric barrier discharge, flame wall interaction, ionization degree, microburners, microscale combustion, plasma, plasma actuator, plasma assisted combustion, sinusoidal discharge
This work performs an analysis of plasma-assisted non-premixed H2-air flames in Y-shaped micro combustors in the presence of field emission dielectric barrier discharge (FE-DBD) plasma actuators. The combustion, flow, and heat transfer characteristics are numerically investigated, and the effect of sinusoidal plasma discharges on combustion performance is examined at various equivalence ratios (φ). A coupled plasma and chemical kinetic model is implemented, using a zero-dimensional model based on the solution of the Boltzmann equation and the ZDPlasKin toolbox to compute net charges and radical generation rates. The estimated body forces, radical production rates, and power densities in the plasma regions are then coupled with hydrogen combustion in the microchannel. Plasma-assisted combustion reveals improvements in flame length and maximum gas temperature. The results demonstrate that FE-DBDs can enhance mixing and complete the combustion of unreacted fuel, preventing flame extinctio... [more]

Keywords: Batteries, challenges, electricity, energy storage techniques, importance, state estimation
Intermittent renewable energy is becoming increasingly popular, as storing stationary and mobile energy remains a critical focus of attention. Although electricity cannot be stored on any scale, it can be converted to other kinds of energies that can be stored and then reconverted to electricity on demand. Such energy storage systems can be based on batteries, supercapacitors, flywheels, thermal modules, compressed air, and hydro storage. This survey article explores several aspects of energy storage. First, we define the primary difficulties and goals associated with energy storage. Second, we discuss several strategies employed for energy storage and the criteria used to identify the most appropriate technology. In addition, we address the current issues and limitations of energy storage approaches. Third, we shed light on the battery technologies, which are most frequently used in a wide range of applications for energy storage. The usage and types of batteries are described alongsi... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical power, spiral turbine, torque
This study aimed to present the experimental results of two types of turbines and attachments used in a hydro-compact generator. Two Horizontal Spiral Turbines (HSTs) with blade angles of eighteen and twenty-one degrees, respectively, and a three-blade turbine were tested and experimented in a laboratory at five levels of water flow rate ranging from 1−2 m/s. After the efficiency and torque values of each turbine were identified, they were installed in two 200 W power generator systems: (1) with a “diffuser” attachment; and (2) with an “in-line+diffuser+nozzle chamber” attachment, and tested in a local irrigation canal with 1.2 m/s. The results from the laboratory indicated that the HST with a twenty-one degree blade angle had 38.10% efficiency at the water flow rate of 2 m/s. It could reach 120.0 rpm and produced 212 Nm of torque. The results from the field experiment revealed that the combination of the power generator with the twenty-one degree blade angle HST and the in-line + diff... [more]

Keywords: braided river delta, coal-bearing source rock, delta plain, depositional model, Middle–Late Triassic, Mungaroo Formation, North Carnarvon Basin
The sedimentary facies, architecture, and depositional mechanism of deltaic systems have been one of the global research hotspots in recent decades; however, the detailed distribution, sedimentary evolution, source rock potential, and major control factors of the coal-bearing shallow-water delta are still unclear. A typical shallow-water braided delta with coal-bearing source rocks developed in the Middle−Late Triassic Mungaroo Formation of the North Carnarvon Basin, which can be a good study area for an analysis of coal-bearing source rocks. In this study, the sedimentary facies, distribution and evolution, and coal-bearing source rock features of the Triassic strata were analyzed based on the integrated study of wireline logs, drilled cores, thin sections, seismic facies and attributes, and geochemical data. A range of shallow-water delta sedimentary facies was identified, including the proximal delta plain channel/interdistributary bay, distal delta plain channel/interdistributary b... [more]

Zhuo Jiang, Yingjie Wu, Han Zhang, Lixun Liu, Jiong Guo, Fu Li
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: HTR, JFNK, secondary circuit, SG
A nuclear power plant is a complex coupling system, which features multi-physics coupling between reactor physics and thermal-hydraulics in the reactor core, as well as the multi-circuit coupling between the primary circuit and the secondary circuit by the shared steam generator (SG). Especially in the pebble-bed modular HTR nuclear power plant, different nuclear steam supply modules are further coupled together through the shared main steam pipes and the related equipment in the secondary circuit, since the special configuration of multiple reactor modules connects to a steam turbine. The JFNK (Jacobian-Free Newton−Krylov) method provides a promising coupling framework to solve the whole HTR nuclear power plant problem, due to its excellent convergence rate and strong robustness. In this work, the JFNK method was modified and applied to the steady-state calculation of the HTR secondary circuit, which plays an important role in simultaneous solutions for the whole HTR nuclear power pla... The Impact of Battery Storage on Power Flow and Economy in an Automated Transactive Energy Market
Shida Zhang, Petr Musilek
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage, demand response, DER integration, distributed energy resources (DER), local energy market, transactive energy
This article explores the use of battery energy storage in a transactive energy approach for a heavily solar-penetrated community. We hypothesize that the efficient market interactions between independently acting, fully automated agents (some equipped with battery energy storage) can result in both bill savings and improvements in power flow, without explicitly optimizing for power flow ahead of time. A test setting of nine typical residential prosumers and one heavily loaded prosumer is used. The heavily loaded prosumer initially experiences multiple undervoltage violations, and a 13.5 kWh battery is installed to alleviate the problem. Two profile-shaping strategies are compared. The first scenario uses greedy control that maximizes self-sufficiency, while the second scenario uses a local market to enable energy trading between participants and a rule-based trading and management agent for control. The results show that the first scenario made minimal improvements to power flow, but... [more]

Keywords: gust, macroturbulence, URANS, vertical axis wind turbine
Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) have proven to be suitable for changing wind conditions, particularly in urban settings. In this paper, a 2D URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes) numerical analysis is employed for an H-Darrieus VAWT. A turbulent domain is created through systemically randomising the inlet velocity to create macro-turbulence in front of the VAWT. The parameters for spatial and temporal randomisation of velocity and its effects on the turbine performance are studied for a mean free stream velocity, U∞ = 10 m/s, and a tip speed ratio (TSR) of 4.1. The mean Coefficient of power (Cp) for randomised fluctuation of 2 m/s and half-cycle randomisation update frequency is 0.411 and for uniform inlet velocity is 0.400. The Cp vs. Tip Speed ratio plot suggests that the optimal tip speed ratio for operation is around 4.1 for this particular wind turbine of diameter 1 m, chord 0.06 m, and NACA 0018 airfoils. The effect of randomisation for tip speed ratio λ = 2.5, 3.3... [more]

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, charge optimisation, demand explainability, demand forecasting, demand profiling, electric vehicles, EV data augmentation
Electric vehicles (EVs) are advancing the transport sector towards a robust and reliable carbon-neutral future. Given this increasing uptake of EVs, electrical grids and power networks are faced with the challenges of distributed energy resources, specifically the charge and discharge requirements of the electric vehicle infrastructure (EVI). Simultaneously, the rapid digitalisation of electrical grids and EVs has led to the generation of large volumes of data on the supply, distribution and consumption of energy. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms can be leveraged to draw insights and decisions from these datasets. Despite several recent work in this space, a comprehensive study of the practical value of AI in charge-demand profiling, data augmentation, demand forecasting, demand explainability and charge optimisation of the EVI has not been formally investigated. The objective of this study was to design, develop and evaluate a comprehensive AI framework that addresses this gap... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy management system (EMS), fuzzy logic controller (FLC), hardware in the loop (HIL), microgrid (MG), OPAL-RT, real-time simulation (RTS), renewable energy system (RES)
This research presents a hierarchical energy management strategy for isolated microgrids (MG). The strategy’s objectives are achieved through a master-slave topology where local controllers are managed and controlled through a central controller. This can provide many technical advantages, particularly regarding the microgrid’s performance and the supply of energy. The local controller is designed to meet the local objectives of the microgrid, such as stabilization of DC voltage and maximization of sources’ extracted power. The objectives of the central controller are achieved through a centralized approach based on fuzzy logic to preserve battery life and manage the energy balance between generation and consumption. The microgrid’s performances were investigated under a steady-state and faulty regime. A Hardware in the Loop (HIL) test based on the Simulink platform is established by RT-LAB real-time simulator. Results are presented to validate the proposed hierarchical control. The OP... [more]

Keywords: grid, HOMER, hybrid system, microgrid, renewable energy sources, wind energy
One of the most crucial solutions to the issues of climate change and global warming is clean energy. However, creating intelligent, resilient, and sustainable systems is a worldwide problem, particularly for grid-connected Renewable Energy Systems (RES). Therefore, it is important to investigate how prospective changes in electricity pricing, renewable energy sources, and load demand could affect system performance during the projects. This paper presents a techno-economic analysis of a grid-connected wind energy system located in the Al-Jouf region in Saudi Arabia. To this end, the potential of renewable energy sources was assessed using Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Electric Renewables (HOMER) software, that also carried out the technical and economic study utilizing multi-year parameters. The novelty of this study is that it is the first-ever investigation of a grid-connected wind farm system in Saudi Arabia that considers the impact of multi-year parameters such as the grid pric... Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, CO2 emissions, combustion tube (CT), dolomite, heavy oil, in situ combustion (ISC), vuggy carbonate
Worldwide, the known recoverable heavy oil and bitumen reserves make up more than 64% of the total reserves, of which more than 60% are trapped in carbonates. Air injection has immense potential for hydrocarbon recovery from various reservoirs. While most of the successful air-based techniques are performed within carbonate reservoirs containing light oil, theoretically, in situ combustion (ISC) has also shown great potential for recovering heavy oil and bitumen. Carbonates are complex in terms of geology and are often associated with fractures and vugs that affect the fluid flow, pressure propagation and progression of the ISC reactions. This paper describes the first experiment in which the triple-porosity concept was applied to simulate heterogeneity through artificially induced vugs, core matrix and fractures. This approach was used to study the feasibility of the ISC recovery technique for heavy oil (14° API) within a dolomite reservoir using a combustion tube (CT) in an experimen... [more]

Keywords: gas turbine, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), radial turbine, turbine geometry, turbo-generator
The efficiency of hybrid electric vehicles may be substantially increased if the energy of exhaust gases, which do not complete the expansion inside the cylinder of the internal combustion engine, is efficiently recovered using a properly designed turbo-generator and employed for vehicle propulsion. Previous studies, carried out by the same authors of this work, showed a potential hybrid vehicle fuel efficiency increment up to 15% employing a 20 kW turbine on a 100 HP-rated power thermal unit. The innovative thermal unit proposed here is composed of a supercharged engine endowed with a properly designed turbo-generator, which comprises two fundamental elements: an exhaust gas turbine expressly designed and optimized for the application, and a suitable electric generator necessary to convert the recovered energy into electric energy, which can be stored in the on-board energy storage system of the vehicle. In this two-part work, the realistic efficiency of the innovative thermal unit fo... [more]

Keywords: Austria, DC-OPF, electricity economics, macroeconomic modelling, model linkage, renewable energies
Austria has set the goal to transform its electricity sector to 100% renewable energy sources by 2030. The transition to highly renewable power systems is not only a technical challenge but also has economic implications due to high investment needs. Furthermore, electricity price and demand are interlaced and influence each other, which requires both technical and economic analyses. In order to provide these comprehensive integrated analyses, we present a novel approach of linking the technical model of the continental European electricity system ATLANTIS with the macroeconomic model DYNK. This allows us, inter alia, to analyze the effects of increasing shares of renewables on wholesale electricity prices and demand, and to perform a sensitivity analysis with respect to CO2 prices. Our results show that increasing CO2 prices greatly affect coal-fired generation abroad, which in turn promotes the role of gas-fired generation, at least until 2030. For Austria, this results in increased... [more]

Marko Kinne, Sebastian Thöns
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Bayesian updating of stress ranges, posterior fatigue reliability, strain measurements of wind turbine support structures
In the present paper, an approach for updating the continuous stress range distribution of a welded connection of a wind turbine support structure with predicted information from strain measurements is presented. Environmental conditions, such as wind or, in offshore fields, waves and currents, in combination with rotor excitations generate cyclic stresses affecting the reliability of welded joints of the support structure over the service life. Using strain measurements, these conditions can be monitored, and the resulting stress ranges, under consideration of measurement, mechanical and material uncertainties, can be reconstructed. These stress ranges can be used as an input for updating the prior probability density function (PDF) of the stress ranges predicted by the overall dynamics and a detailed design analysis. Applying Bayesian probability theory and decision theoretical implications, the predicted posterior probability density of the stress ranges is calculated based on the d... [more]
