Frequency Regulation of Electric Vehicle Aggregator Considering User Requirements with Limited Data Collection
Fei Zeng, Zhinong Wei, Guoqiang Sun, Mingshen Wang, Haiteng Han
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle (EV), EV aggregator, frequency regulation, limited data collection, regulation requirement, state recovery
High penetration of renewable energy in the power grid causes serious frequency deviations. Large-scale integrations of electric vehicles (EVs) in the power grid provide considerable vehicle-to-grid potential for frequency regulation. Existing frequency regulation strategies with aggregated EVs realize accurate power control that relies on complete information interaction between the EV aggregator and individual EVs. However, the data collection for all EV parameters is not applicable due to privacy protection and the limited communication environment. Considering the limited data collection from grid-connected EVs, this paper provides a novel frequency regulation strategy and tends to address the uncertain influence from EV users’ charging requirements, the EV aggregator’s power regulation, and the frequency regulation performance. Firstly, considering the influence of the limited data collection by EVs on the users’ requirement of traveling and regulation preference, a probabilistic... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicles, LEDs, piezoelectric effect, Solar Panels, wireless charging
Inspired by the fact that there is an immense amount of renewable energy sources available on the roadways, such as mechanical pressure, this study presents the development and implementation of an innovative charging technique for electric vehicles (EVs) by fully utilizing the existing roadways and state-of-the-art nanotechnology and power electronics. The developed Smart Illuminative Charging is a novel wireless charging system that uses LEDs powered by piezoelectric materials as the energy transmitter source and thin film solar panels placed at the bottom of the EVs as the receiver, which is then poised to deliver the harvested energy to the vehicle’s battery. The piezoelectric materials were tested for their mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion capabilities and the relatively large-area EH2N samples (2 cm × 2 cm) produced high output voltages of up to 52 mV upon mechanical pressure. Furthermore, a lab-scale prototype device was developed to testify the proposed mechanism of i... [more]
Approach for a Global Route-Based Energy Management System for Electric Vehicles with a Hybrid Energy Storage System
Tuyen Nguyen, Yannick Rauch, Reiner Kriesten, Daniela Chrenko
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery, battery lifetime, electric vehicle (EV), Energy Efficiency, energy management, global optimisation, route based, supercapacitor
The usage of batteries and supercapacitors in the field of electric vehicles is becoming increasingly prominent in both research and development. Due to the complementary advantages of the two systems, high energy density, and high power density, a combined battery/supercapacitor system offers potential. To effectively utilise the potential of such a hybrid energy storage system (HESS), one requires an intelligent energy management system (EMS). The EMS is responsible for controlling the electrical power between the battery and the supercapacitor in such a way that the required power can be optimally distributed at all times (currently and in the future). For this purpose, the energy management system utilises information on the driving route and, based on this information, shall calculate a global strategy for the continuous power distribution. The controlled power distribution should take place in real time and be robust against discrepancies so that unpredictable or unreliably predi... [more]
Lubricant Oil Consumption and Opportunities for Oil-Free Turbines in the Hydropower Sector: A European Assessment
Emanuele Quaranta
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bearing, hydropower, lubricant, oil-free, turbine
Lubricant oil is used in hydropower units to minimize friction, improving the turbine efficiency and reducing the wear. However, oil production is a pollutant process, while eventual spills may affect water quality and damage freshwater ecosystems. In this study, the lubricant oil consumption of the European hydropower fleet was estimated (considering its installed capacity of 254 GW). The energy required to extract and process the oil was also estimated based on available literature data. The oil consumption was estimated to be 22 × 103 tons/year, and the associated CO2 emissions are 105 tons/year. The lubricant oil costs EUR 116 million per year. Although this is only 0.0022% of the oil consumed as a primary energy source in the European context, and less than 0.4% of the European industry consumption of lubricant oil, results show that new bearing types and oil-free turbines (e.g., self-lubricating or water-lubricated turbines) can improve the sustainability of the hydropower sector... Asarudheen Abdudeen, Mohamed Y. E. Selim, Manigandan Sekar, Mahmoud Elgendi
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biofuels, Jatropha, transesterification process
Biofuel is an attractive alternative to fossil fuels since it is renewable and biodegradable—it is mainly made from edible and non-edible sources. Globally, the usage of renewable biofuels is expected to rise quickly. The rising production and use of biofuel has prompted an examination of its environmental impact. Biodiesel is a fatty acid methyl ester generated from sustainable lipid feedstock that substitutes petroleum-based diesel fuel. Non-food oils, such as Jatropha, waste cooking oil, and by-products of vegetable oil from refineries provide inexpensive feedstock for biodiesel manufacturing. Due to its increased oil yield, adequate fatty acid content, tolerance to various agro-climatic conditions, and short gestation period, Jatropha may be one of the most promoted oilseed crops worldwide. Furthermore, Jatropha can provide several economic and agronomic advantages because it is a biodegradable, renewable plant. This study examines whether Jatropha can be considered as the most pre... Design of Variable Pitch Control Method for Floating Wind Turbine
Jiawang Yuan, Zhijiang Cheng, Dengquan Liu
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: floating wind turbine, fractional order PID, stability control, variable pitch control
Because of the randomness of wind speed and the nonlinearity of the dynamic equation of variable pitch control, it is difficult to establish an accurate dynamic equation of variable pitch of floating fan. In view of this situation, this paper takes the 5 MW floating wind turbine of the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) as the research object, establishes the dynamic equation under the basic control of FAST, uses the L-M (nonlinear least square method) to identify the dynamic parameters of the system and obtains the dynamic model of the floating fan under variable pitch stability control. Compared with the output of FAST in the same case, the accuracy of the control model is verified; the FAST base pitch control adopts PI control, but the effect of FAST base control is relatively poor. This paper proposes a disturbance-adaptive pitch control method based on fractional PID feedback; the results show that compared with the FAST base pitch control, the control method is more suit... Keywords: battery, converter, Energy Storage, frequency control, inertia emulation, renewable energy resources, supercapacitor
A paradigm shift in power systems is observed due to the massive integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) as distributed generators. Mainly, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and wind generators are extensively integrated with the modern power system to facilitate green efforts in the electrical energy sector. However, integrating these RESs destabilizes the frequency of the modern power system. Hitherto, the frequency control has not drawn sufficient attention due to the reduced inertia and complex control of power electronic converters associated with renewable energy conversion systems. Thus, this article provides a critical summary on the frequency control of solar PV and wind-integrated systems. The frequency control issues with advanced techniques, including inertia emulation, de-loading, and grid-forming, are summarized. Moreover, several cutting-edge devices in frequency control are outlined. The advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to control the frequency o... [more]

Phoevos (Foivos) Koukouvinis, John Anagnostopoulos
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: body tracking, collision detection, fish-friendly hydropower, fluid–structure interaction
Utilization of unharnessed hydro-power necessitates designing fish-friendly hydraulic machinery. Towards this effort, the present work investigates various methods for tracking fish motion, ranging from particle tracking methods to accurate, but computationally expensive, body tracking methods, such as immersed boundaries and overset meshes. Moreover, a novel uncoupled 6-Degree of Freedom tracking technique is proposed, based on an approximated pressure field around the tracked body of interest, using steady-state flow field data, and including collision detection to walls. The proposed method shows promising results in terms of accuracy, being comparable to the more computationally expensive fully coupled methods at a tiny fraction of the execution time. The new method reveals location of fish−blade impact, as well as statistics of forces, pressure and flow shear that a passing fish is subjected to, both in the normal and reverse operation of the turbine. The low computational cost of... [more]

Keywords: 1D geomechanical analysis, 3D geostress, exploration, formation interval velocity, high pressure gas well, mud weight window, pilot well, pore pressure prediction
The aim of this study was to propose the workflow for integrated analysis of the 3D geostress and 1D geomechanics of an exploration in a new gas field. This integrated analysis will allow for problems associated with the inaccuracy of 1D geomechanical analysis to be overcome in a region with obvious anticline/syncline structures. The 1D geomechanical analysis of the well in the exploration of a new gas field mainly included the prediction of pore pressure and calculation of the mud weight window for safe drilling. In general, this integrated workflow included both a method for pore pressure prediction and a method for the calculation of the mud weight window, with the numerical solution of 3D geostress plus the interval velocity of formations. The procedure for the calculation of the 3D geostress of a target block was also introduced. Numerical solution of the 3D geostress of the target gas field, as well as solutions of 1D geomechanical analysis, have demonstrated the efficiency and p... [more]

Keywords: breakthrough curves, deactivation model, desulfurization, hot gas conditioning, thermodynamic analysis, ZnO sorbent
Hot gas conditioning is a remarkable stage for decreasing typical and harsh contaminants of syngas produced in the biomass gasification process. Downstream contaminants containing hydrogen sulphide (H2S) can significantly deteriorate fuel stream conversion reactors and fuel cell systems. Thus, an effective gas cleaning stage is required to remove critical streams that endanger the whole pathway toward the biomass conversion process. In this work, we studied H2S capture from biofuel syngas by using a kinetic deactivation model to analyze the effect of the operating conditions on the adsorption performance. Furthermore, the particle sorbent influence on other reactions, such as methane reforming and water gas shift (WGS), were also evaluated. Breakthrough curves were plotted and fitted following a first-order linearized deactivation model to perform both the H2S adsorption capacity and thermodynamic analysis. Moreover, the influence of the operating conditions was studied through a break... [more]

Keywords: allocative efficiency, data envelopment analysis, electricity, energy transition, Natural Gas
Conventional economic theory indicates that the free market contributes to allocative efficiency. However, specific energy markets present network industry characteristics which distance them from perfect competition. These markets, therefore, need effective regulation. The liberalizing reforms which took place in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and emerging countries from the 1990s onwards have reduced the share of state ownership in the energy sector, but not its functions of regulation, coordination and planning. It is also worth noting the expansion of the government’s agenda due to the energy transition that has unequivocally imposed itself in the 21st century. This article uses the Slacks-Based Measure of the Data Envelopment Analysis (SBM-DEA) methodology to investigate the relationship between market liberalization and sustainability in a low-carbon energy transition context. Taking the cases of the natural gas and electricity markets, we verify... [more]

Keywords: agrotechnical substrate profile, energy factors, plowing depth, traction resistance, work technology
The article presents the effect of using a tillage tool with skimmers, second stage skimmers, and bodies (double-deck plow) on the reduction of traction resistance and energy consumption by at least 1.1 kN, i.e., 3.3%. In addition, the statistical characteristics of the plowing depth and the width of the longitudinal profile of the field are stabilized. The use of agricultural machinery with skimmers, secondary skimmers, or bodies ensures even distribution of plowing depth fluctuations. The use of a plow without skimmers mounted on it leads to a regular and significant increase in the spread of fluctuations in the working depth and cross-section of the field. The normalized correlation function of this process is characterized by the presence of a noticeably marked periodic component. When the plow is used without skimmers mounted on it, the working period of the unit practically corresponds to the working width of the tillage tool. The use of skimmers with a grinding angle of 25° caus... [more]

Keywords: aggregator, battery-storage system, energy community, energy-management strategies, prosumer, virtual power plant
Most of current prosumer-energy-management approaches are focused on economic optimization by self-consumption maximization. Nevertheless, a lack of energy management strategies (EMS) that tackle different interaction possibilities among community-clustered solar plus battery prosumers has been detected. Furthermore, such active prosumer EMS may include participation in ancillary service markets such as automatic frequency restoration reserves (aFRR) through an optimized battery-energy storage-system (BESS) operation, as well as incorporating community-level energy management. In this study, an optimal EMS that includes aggregated aFRR-market participation of five solar plus battery prosumers participating in an energy community (EC), with the aim of reducing total costs of ownership for each individual prosumer is proposed. For its validation, different scenarios have been analyzed. The results show that the proposed EMS allows a levelized cost of energy (LCOE) reduction for all commu... [more]

Keywords: current sensorless tracking algorithm, incremental conductance, maximum power point tracker
This paper proposes a novel maximum power point tracking algorithm applied to photovoltaic systems. The proposed method uses the derivative of power versus voltage to define the tracking path and has the advantage of requiring only a voltage sensor to be implemented. The absence of the current sensor and the auxiliary circuitry employed for conditioning the current signal imply cost reduction, configuring the main contribution of the proposed method, whose performance is kept close to the classical incremental conductance method, even with the reduced number of components. A DC-DC zeta converter is introduced in the content of this work as an interface between a photovoltaic array and a resistive load. The paper describes the operating principle and presents the mathematical formulation related to the proposed algorithm. Interesting simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the theory by comparing the proposed method with its traditional version under several scenar... [more]

Keywords: BiFeO3, doping, perovskite, solar cell
In this work, pure BiFeO3 and samples doped with different concentrations of chromium were synthesized to improve the optical properties and efficiency of solar cells based on BiFeO3. The sol-gel method was used for synthesis due to its ability to produce nanostructured materials with high purity and good homogeneity, as well as the possibility of controlling the size and shape of the resulting particles. The samples were characterized by different analytical techniques. Thermal analysis results indicate that the dopant increases the weight loss of the sample from 61 to 81%, with an increase in the exothermal in the nucleation and crystallization temperature range. The X-ray diffraction patterns and UV-visible spectra show a dependence of the crystallite size and bandgap with respect to the amount of Cr dopant, decreasing from 168 to 73 nm and from 2.14 to 1.92 eV, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy images display a decreasing grain size as a result of an increasing amount of d... [more]

Xiang Ao, Baobao Wang, Yuxi Rao, Lang Zhang, Yu Wang, Hongkun Tang
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adsorption-induced strain, CO2 corrosion, numerical simulation, oil-bearing shale, permeability
Permeability is a crucial parameter for enhancing shale oil recovery through CO2 injection in oil-bearing shale. After CO2 is injected into the shale reservoir, CO2 corrosion and adsorption-induced strain can change the permeability of the oil shale, affecting the recovery of shale oil. This study aimed to explore the influence of CO2 corrosion and adsorption-induced strain on the permeability of oil shale. The deformation of the internal pore diameter of oil shale induced by CO2 corrosion under different pressures was measured by low-pressure nitrogen gas adsorption in the laboratory, and the corrosion model was fitted using the experimental data. Following the basic definitions of permeability and porosity, a dynamic mathematical model of porosity and permeability was obtained, and a fluid−solid coupling mathematical model of CO2-containing oil shale was established according to the basic theory of fluid−solid coupling. Then the effects of adsorption expansion strain and corrosion co... [more]

Johannes Karlsson, Anders Grauers
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery electric trucks, battery electric vehicle, battery sizing, charging strategy, cost-efficient
One possible step for reducing humans’ use of fossil fuel due to transport tasks is to replace diesel trucks with battery electric ones. This paper introduces the energy distribution diagram, which makes it easy to visualise the trucks’ daily energy consumption over their full service life. The energy distribution is used to investigate which driving patterns are suitable for cost-effective battery electric trucks when compared to commercial diesel trucks. It is shown that the battery capacity that results in the lowest cost per kilowatt-hour propulsion energy depends on the driving pattern, and an algorithm for selecting the most cost-effective capacity is presented. In many instances, it was found that battery electric trucks competed favourably with diesel trucks, especially when the trucks had low variations in daily energy consumption. It is beneficial to determine the circumstances under which they may be cheaper, as this will facilitate the transition to battery electric trucks... [more]

Keywords: corona ring, finite element analysis, high voltage engineering, insulator strings, optimisation techniques, transmission lines
The installation of a corona ring on an insulator string on a transmission line is one of the solutions to reduce the electric field stress surrounding the energised end of the insulator string. However, installing a corona ring with an optimum design to reduce the electric field magnitude on an insulator string is a challenging task. Therefore, in this work, a method to achieve the optimum design of a corona ring for 132 kV composite non-ceramic insulator string was proposed using two optimisation methods: the Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) and Grey Wolf Optimisation (GWO). A composite non-ceramic insulator string geometry with and without a corona ring was modelled in finite element analysis and used to obtain the electric field distribution in the model geometry. The electric field distribution was evaluated using a variation in the corona ring’s dimensions, i.e., the ring diameter, the ring tube diameter and the vertical position of the ring along the insulator string. Keywords: buried pipe, carbonate rock, fracture distribution characteristics, thermal property parameter, thermal response test
Fractures are developed in carbonate rock areas, and the fracture water flow significantly influences the heat exchange between buried pipes and the rock mass by induing heat convection, providing the carbonate rock area a strong heat exchange capacity and preferable conditions for shallow geothermal development and utilization. In this paper, the calculation method of heat exchange capacity of buried pipes based on fracture distribution characteristics is proposed and deduced, featuring such advantages as quick speed and low cost. Taking an actual project in carbonate rock area as an example, the heat exchange capacity of buried pipes was obtained by the following two methods: in-situ thermal response test and calculation based on fracture distribution characteristics. In the thermal response test, the initial ground temperatures of the two test holes were 15.18 °C and 12.72 °C. By fitting the linear equation of time and average temperature with a linear thermal source model, the heat... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, mercury, mercury removal, RDF, thermal pretreatment, waste
The growing world population is contributing to the increasing amounts of waste and a significant increase in energy demand. Therefore, coal will increasingly be replaced by refuse-derived fuel (RDF), which is produced from municipal solid waste. The use of such fuel poses many difficulties because of its heterogeneity and high mercury emission. One method to stabilize the properties of RDF and reduce the mercury content is thermal pretreatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the release of mercury from RDF samples following thermal pretreatment. The study was carried out in the temperature range of 100−350 °C. Statistical analysis was performed on the correlation between the composition of the RDF samples and the release of mercury. The RDF samples showed a very high variation in the mercury content, ranging from 45 to 849 µg Hg/kg (1.7 to 35.3 µg Hg/MJ). Thermal pretreatment removed a significant amount of mercury at 250 °C (94−99%). Paper content positively affected me... [more]

Keywords: capacity degradation, extreme learning machine, life prediction, sparrow search algorithm, thermal gradient
Thermal gradient is inevitable in a lithium-ion battery pack because of uneven heat generation and dissipation, which will affect battery aging. In this paper, an experimental platform for a battery cycle aging test is built that can simulate practical thermal gradient conditions. Experimental results indicate a high nonlinear degree of battery degradation. Considering the nonlinearity of Li-ion batteries aging, the extreme learning machine (ELM), which has good learning and fitting ability for highly nonlinear, highly nonstationary, and time-varying data, is adopted for prediction. A battery life prediction model based on the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) is proposed in this paper to optimize the random weights and bias of the ELM network and verified by experimental data. The results show that compared with traditional ELM and back-propagation neural networks, the prediction results of ELM optimized by SSA have lower mean absolute error percentages and root mean square errors, indic... March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrochemical performance, morphological analysis, multi-phase modeling, numerical modeling, PEM water electrolysis
Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysis has a promising future for large-scale hydrogen production. As PEM electrolysis technology develops, larger operating current densities are required. In order to increase current density, more water should be available at the reaction sites. Moreover, the removal rate of oxygen and hydrogen needs to be effectively improved. This, in turn, necessitates a better understanding of the main mass transport and electrochemical processes. On the anode side, mass transport is particularly crucial because water must be supplied to the catalyst layer (CL) while, at the same time, oxygen bubbles must be eliminated in a parallel flow from the reaction sites into the flow channels. Hence, simulating the two-phase bubbly flow across the cell thickness is necessary to predict PEM electrolysis performance more accurately as a function of the operating current density. This study provides a systematic understanding of how morphological and geometrical feat... [more]
