March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrolytic capacitors, ESR, PSO, PSO-SVR
Electrolytic capacitors have large capacity, low price, and fast charge/discharge characteristics. Therefore, they are widely used in various power conversion devices. These electrolytic capacitors are mainly used for temporary storage and voltage stabilization of DC energy and have recently been used in the renewable energy field for linking AC/DC voltage and buffering charge/discharge energy. However, electrolytic capacitors continue to be disadvantageous in their reliability due to their structural weaknesses due to the use of electrolytes and very thin oxide and dielectric materials. Most capacitors are considered a failure when the capacitance has changed by 25% of its initial value. Accurate and fast monitoring or estimation techniques are essential to be used with low cost and no extra hardware. In order to achieve these objectives, an online, reliable, and high-quality technique that continuously monitors the DC-link capacitor condition in a three-phase back-to-back converter i... [more]
Investigation of Combustion Properties and Soot Deposits of Various US Crude Oils
Gurjap Singh, Mehdi Esmaeilpour, Albert Ratner
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Bakken crude, burning rate, Colorado crude, crude oil, droplet combustion, ignition delay, Pennsylvania crude, Petroleum, soot deposits, Texas crude
The oil boom in the North Dakota oilfields has resulted in improved energy security for the US. Recent estimates of oil production rates indicate that even completion of the Keystone XL pipeline will only fractionally reduce the need to ship this oil by rail. Current levels of oil shipment have already caused significant strain on rail infrastructure and led to crude oil train derailments, resulting in loss of life and property. Treating crude oil as a multicomponent liquid fuel, this work aims to understand crude oil droplet burning and thereby lead to methods to improve train fire safety. Sub-millimeter sized droplets of Pennsylvania, Texas, Colorado, and Bakken crude were burned, and the process was recorded with charge-couple device (CCD) and complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) high-speed cameras. The resulting images were post-processed to obtain various combustion parameters, such as burning rate, ignition delay, total combustion time, and microexplosion behavior. The... [more]
Wide Load Range Capacitor Clamped ZVZCS Half Bridge Three-Level DC-DC Converter with Two Unsymmetrical Bi-directional Switches

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: balanced current distribution, capacitor clamped, three-level dc-dc converter, ZVZCS
This paper presents a zero-voltage and zero-current switching (ZVZCS) capacitor-clamped half bridge (HB) three-level dc-dc converter (TLDC), which is well fit for high input voltage dc-dc industrial applications. The maximum voltage stress of the primary switches is limited by the flying capacitor and input capacitors, which is very close to Vin/2. Two unsymmetrical bidirectional switches are used to replace two of the primary switches in a conventional capacitor-clamped HB TLDC, which ensure ZVZCS of the main switches in wide load range. The reverse direction MOSFETs in the unsymmetrical bidirectional switches have low on-state resistance and are controlled with soft-switching mode irrelevant to the load current. Therefore, the additional power loss can be omitted. The current of the flying capacitor is greatly reduced due to ZVZCS operation, which would result in a smaller volume flying capacitor and high system reliability. Furthermore, the current imbalance problem of the power dev... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Adriatic Sea, capacity factor, extreme value analysis, offshore wave energy, power matrix, seasonal variability, WEC
The European Union is a leading patron for the introduction of renewable energy, having set a target that renewable sources will represent at least 27% of total energy consumption by the year 2030. Presently, the most significant Croatian renewable resource is hydropower, which is presently at its peak and will not develop further because of limited hydro resources. Therefore, the share of electricity generation from onshore wind farms in Croatia during in recent years has grown significantly. However, as the Croatian government has already made most of the concessions for possible locations of wind farms, the aim of the present study is to evaluate a different renewable energy resource, wave energy. An assessment of the offshore wave energy potential in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea is performed using data taken from WorldWaves atlas (WWA). WWA is based on satellite measurements, validated against buoy measurements and reanalysed by numerical wave modelling. This assessment wa... [more]

Keywords: cash-flow analysis, discounted payback time, Monte Carlo simulation, net present value, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Stochastic Hybrid Automaton
Grid-connected low voltage photovoltaic power plants cover most of the power capacity installed in Italy. They offer an important contribution to the power demand of the utilities connected but, due to the nature of the solar resource, the night-time consumption can be satisfied only withdrawing the energy by the national grid, at the price of the energy distributor. Thanks to the improvement of storage technologies, the installation of a system of battery looks like a promising solution by giving the possibility to increase auto-consumption dramatically. In this paper, a model-based approach to analyze and discuss the performance and the economic feasibility of grid-connected domestic photovoltaic power plants with a storage system is presented. Using as input to the model the historical series (2008−2017) of the main ambient variables, the proposed model, based on Stochastic Hybrid Fault Tree Automaton, allowed us to simulate and compare two alternative technical solutions characteri... Keywords: Battery charging, Battery energy storage system, Emissions, Harbour grid, Onshore power supply, Ship
The main objective of this study is to develop and analyse different harbour grid configurations that can facilitate the charging of batteries for modern vessels and supply onshore power. The use of battery energy storage systems in modern hybrid or entirely electric vessels is rapidly increasing globally in order to reduce emissions, save fuel and increase energy efficiency of ships. To fully utilise their benefits, certain technical issues need to be addressed. One of the most important aspects is to explore alternative ways of charging batteries with high power capacities for modern vessels. The paper presents a comprehensive overview of battery-charging configurations and discusses the technical challenges of each design from the perspective of their practical implementation, both onshore and onboard a vessel. It is found that the proposed models are suitable for vessels operating either entirely on battery storage or having it integrated into the onboard power system. Moreover, th... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bench test, dual-fuel engine, excess air ratio, injection timing, Natural Gas, substitution rate
A throttle can be installed on the intake pipe of a natural gas (NG)/diesel dual-fuel engine to control the excess air ratio of the air-fuel mixture by adjusting the air intake. Building on a previously proposed NG/diesel dual-fuel supply strategy using the adjustment of excess air ratio, this work further studied the effects of different injection timing schemes on output power, fuel efficiency, and pollutant emissions of a dual-fuel engine under low to medium load conditions. In the experiment, the engine was operated at a speed of 1600 r/min, under either low (27.1 N·m) or medium (50.6 N·m) loads, and the NG substitution rate was either 40%, 60%, or 80%. The effect of different injection timing schemes on the combustion performance of the engine under low to medium load conditions was studied based on in-cylinder pressure changes detected by a pressure sensor. Experimental results showed that under medium-speed low-load conditions and a NG substitution rate of 40%, setting the diese... [more]
On Wind Turbine Power Delta Control

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active power control, ancillary services, curtailment, de-rating, delta control, proportional de-loading, wind turbine
One of the major challenges facing wind energy at the moment is its dependence on dispatchable energy sources to match power supply to demand and provide an adequate spinning reserve. There is no fundamental impediment for this to be done with wind energy when wind conditions are such that sufficient wind power is available. It is, in fact, common for wind farms to participate in primary and secondary frequency regulation via droop curves, curtailment, synthetic inertia, proportional de-loading, and delta control. However, although the literature presents several approaches to turbine-level control functions of this sort, it is not trivial to extract from it a readily industrializable set of algorithms. Said extraction, focused on delta control and the addition of our own contributions, is the purpose of this paper, where we propose an extension of popular torque and pitch control algorithms, which allows delta control without the wind speed observers used by other authors.

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alternate axis twisted baffles, heat transfer, pressure loss, rectangular channel, thermochromic liquid crystals
This paper reports the effects of alternate axis twisted baffle geometric parameters on the heat transfer and flow characteristics within rectangular channels. In our experiments we used modified shapes of alternate axis twisted baffles according to relative pitch ratios (s/w) equal to 2−12 and twist ratios (y/w) equal to 1−5, under conditions where the angle of attack (α) was 90° and the relative blockage height (e/Dh) was at a constant value of 0.095. The results for the Reynolds numbers based on the duct hydraulic diameter ranged from 9000 to 24,000 at a constant Prandtl number, Pr = 0.707, using air as a working fluid. A 0.05 mm thick stainless-steel foil was used as a heater, and a thermochromic liquid crystal technique was used to obtain the local temperature distribution on the heated surfaces. Images were captured in areas with periodic, fully developed regions in the channel. The results show that rectangular channels equipped with alternate axis twisted baffles demonstrated 8... [more]
Research on the Filters for Dual-Inverter Fed Open-End Winding Transformer Topology in Photovoltaic Grid-Tied Applications
Baoji Wang, Xing Zhang, Chao Song, Renxian Cao
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dual inverter, filter, open-end winding transformer, photovoltaic application
Owing to the necessity of the transformer for the multi-parallel inverters connected to the medium-voltage (MV) grid, the conventional multi-parallel inverter topology can be reconfigured to the dual-inverter fed open-end winding transformer (DI-OEWT) topology to obtain lower output voltage harmonics, which can reduce the requirement of the filter inductance. However, due to the special structure of the DI-OEWT topology, the arrangement scheme of the filter can be more than one kind, and different schemes may affect the filter performance. In this paper, research on the existing two kinds of filters, as well as a proposed one, for the DI-OEWT topology used in photovoltaic grid-tied applications is presented. The equivalent circuits of these filters are derived, and based on this, the harmonic suppression capability of these filters is analyzed and compared. Furthermore, a brief parameter design method of these filters is also introduced, and based on the design examples, the inductance... [more]

Keywords: damage-thermal-gas-solid coupled analysis, damaged coal and rock mass, FORTRAN programs, gas extraction, injection heat
This paper puts forward a new mathematical model, which is a coal damage-heat-fluid-solid multi-field coupling theory, in order to reveal the mechanical mechanism of the increase of coal-bed methane recovery through thermal stimulation, and to evaluate its effect. The strain field is introduced to define the damage of coal by considering of the effects of temperature, gas pressure, and mining stress of the coal seam. It is used to quantitatively describe the degree of coal rupture and damage. Additionally, the elastic and damage constitutive equation of coal and rock mass, the governing equation of the temperature field, and the coupling equation of gas diffusion and seepage are established. Based on these equations, the finite element source program is redeveloped by using the FORTRAN language, and a multi-field coupling analysis program is compiled. This program takes the temperature, the gas seepage, and the damage and deformation of coal and rock mass into consideration. The effect... [more]

Keywords: Gulf of Mexico, peak electricity demand, thermal power plants, wind farm
The Energetic Transition Law in Mexico has established that in the next years, the country has to produce at least 35% of its energy from clean sources in 2024. Based on this, a proposal in this study is the cogeneration between the principal thermal power plants along the Mexican states of the Gulf of Mexico with modeled wind farms near to these thermal plants with the objective to reduce peak electricity demand. These microscale models were done with hourly MERRA-2 data that included wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and atmospheric pressure with records from 1980−2018 and taking into account roughness, orography, and climatology of the site. Wind speed daily profile for each model was compared to electricity demand trajectory, and it was seen that wind speed has a peak at the same time. The amount of power delivered to the electric grid with this cogeneration in Rio Bravo and Altamira (Northeast region) is 2657.02 MW and for Tuxpan and Dos Bocas from the Eastern region is 319... Keywords: EOR, high temperature, interfacial tension, partitioning, surface tension, surfactant
The applications of surfactants in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) have received more attention in the past decade due to their ability to enhance microscopic sweep efficiency by reducing oil-water interfacial tension in order to mobilize trapped oil. Surfactants can partition in both water and oil systems depending on their solubility in both phases. The partitioning coefficient (Kp) is a key parameter when it comes to describing the ratio between the concentration of the surfactant in the oil phase and the water phase at equilibrium. In this paper, surfactant partitioning of the nonionic surfactant Alkylpolyglucoside (APG) was investigated in pre-critical micelle concentration (CMC) and post-cmc regimes at 80 °C to 106 °C. The Kp was then obtained by measuring the surfactant concentration after equilibration with oil in pre-cmc and post-cmc regimes, which was done using surface tension measurements and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. Surface tension (ST) and... [more]
Hydrate Stability and Methane Recovery from Gas Hydrate through CH4−CO2 Replacement in Different Mass Transfer Scenarios

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 + N2 injection, hydrate stability, mass transfer, methane recovery, morphology studies, sodium dodecyl sulfate
CH4−CO2 replacement is a carbon-negative, safer gas production technique to produce methane gas from natural gas hydrate reservoirs by injecting pure CO2 or other gas mixtures containing CO2. Laboratory-scale experiments show that this technique produces low methane volume and has a slow replacement rate due to the mass transfer barrier created due to impermeable CO2 hydrate layer formation, thus making the process commercially unattractive. This mass-transfer barrier can be reduced through pressure reduction techniques and chemical techniques; however, very few studies have focused on depressurization-assisted and chemical-assisted CH4−CO2 replacement to lower mass-transfer barriers and there are many unknowns. In this work, we qualitatively and quantitatively investigated the effect of the pressure reduction and presence of a hydrate promoter on mixed hydrate stability, CH4 recovery, and risk of water production during CH4−CO2 exchange. Exchange experiments were carried out using the... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed generator, economic power dispatch, electric vehicle, energy management, Energy Storage, sizing and siting
This paper presents a sizing and siting model for distributed generators (DGs) and energy storage systems (ESS) towards the design of a cost-efficient and reliable microgrid considering electric vehicles (EVs). The proposed model exploits the coordinated energy dispatching of DGs, ESS, and EVs, aiming at minimizing the overall planning and operating cost as well as meeting power supply reliability requirements. This issue is addressed in a two-stage framework. The upper stage determines the sizes and sites of candidate DGs and ESS, and the lower stage optimizes the microgrid’s economic power dispatch. Since the two-stage model contains both planning and operational variables, a two-stage iterative heuristic algorithm is designed. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated by case studies, and corresponding results demonstrate that the planning approach that considers coordinated management of an EV fleet and economic power dispatch of microgrid achieves better economics. Keywords: combustion, gasoline engine, Wankel engine, workflow simulation
This paper deals with the creation of modern high-performance aircraft power units based on the Wankel rotary piston engine. One of the main problems of Wankel engines is high specific fuel consumption. This paper solves the problem of improving the efficiency of this type of engine. The mathematical model of non-stationary processes of transfer of momentum, energy, mass, and the concentration of reacting substances in the estimated volume provides for the determination of local gas parameters in the entire computational region, which are presented as a sum of averaged and pulsation components. The k-ζ-f model is used as the turbulence model; the combustion is described by the coherent flame model (CFM) based on the concept of laminar flame propagation. As a result of the calculation, we obtained the values of temperature, pressure, and velocity of the working fluid in the working chamber cross-sections of a rotary−piston engine. Various options of the rotor recess shape are considered... [more]

Keywords: fault ride-through, interval type-2 fuzzy logic system, permanent magnet synchronous generator, wind energy conversion
Recently, wind energy conversion systems in renewable energy sources have attracted attention due to their effective application. Wind turbine systems have a complex structure; however, traditional control systems are inadequate in answering the demands of complex systems. Therefore, expert control systems are applied to wind turbines, such as type-1 and interval type-2 fuzzy logic control (IT-2 FLC) systems. An IT-2 FLC system is used to solve the complexity of the wind turbine system and increases the efficiency of the wind turbine. This paper proposes a new control approach using the IT-2 FLC method applied to a wind turbine based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) to improve the transient stability during grid faults. An IT-2 FLC was designed to enhance the fault ride-through performance of a wind turbine and was implemented to control the machine side converter and grid side converter of a wind turbine. The proposed algorithm performance of a wind turbine based on... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery management system, cell balancing circuit, charge equalizer, lithium-ion battery
In this work, a new active balancing circuit is proposed. This circuit consists of a cell-access network and an energy-transfer network. The cell-access network requires 2n + 6 switches, where n is the number of cells, and creates an energy-transfer path between unbalanced cells and the energy-transfer network. The energy-transfer network has double energy carriers and simultaneously implements cell-to-pack and pack-to-cell balancing operations without overlapping. As a result, a high power rate and fast balancing operation can be achieved by using two energy carriers in a single balancing circuit. The prototype of a proposed balancing circuit was built for six cells and then tested under various conditions; all cells in the state of charge (SOC) region of 70% to 80% were equalized after 93 min, and one charging/discharging period in the SOC region of 10% to 90% was increased by 8.58% compared to the non-balancing operation. These results show that the proposed circuit is a good way to... [more]

Keywords: biodiesel, bioethanol, CO and NOx emissions, diesel engine, engine performances, exhaust gases opacity, farm tractor, kinematic viscosity, response surface method
The effect of biofuel blends on the engine performance and emissions of agricultural machines can be extremely complex to predict even if the properties and the effects of the pure substances in the blends can be sourced from the literature. Indeed, on the one hand, internal combustion engines (ICEs) have a high intrinsic operational complexity; on the other hand, biofuels show antithetic effects on engine performance and present positive or negative interactions that are difficult to determine a priori. This study applies the Response Surface Methodology (RSM), a numerical method typically applied in other disciplines (e.g., industrial engineering) and for other purposes (e.g., set-up of production machines), to analyse a large set of experimental data regarding the mechanical and environmental performances of an ICE used to power a farm tractor. The aim is twofold: i) to demonstrate the effectiveness of RSM in quantitatively assessing the effects of biofuels on a complex system like... [more]

Keywords: combustion, diesel ignited gas engine, dual-fuel engine, excess air ratio, heat release, pilot fuel injection pressure, pilot fuel mass, start of injection
Modern research in the area of internal combustion engines is focused on researching and investigating the technologies that will improve fuel efficiency and decrease emissions. Application of dual-fuel engines is considered as a potential solution to these problems. In the dual-fuel engine, a natural gas-air mixture is ignited by a small amount of the diesel fuel directly injected into a combustion chamber. Pilot fuel injection parameters can strongly effect the combustion process. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of such fuel-supply parameters as pilot fuel mass, pilot fuel injection pressure, pilot fuel injection timing and excess air ratio on the combustion process. Investigation is based on the data obtained during bench tests conducted with the use of measurement equipment. The dependences of engine characteristics from the fuel supply parameters under review were obtained based on the results of the experimental study. Optimal values for every investigated fuel... Keywords: engine downsizing, knock, pre-ignition, spark-ignition, turbocharging
Since 2014, Formula 1 engines have been turbocharged spark-ignited engines. In this scenario, the maximum engine power available in full-load conditions can be achieved only by optimizing combustion phasing within the cycle, i.e., by advancing the center of combustion until the limit established by the occurrence of abnormal combustion. High in-cylinder pressure peaks and the possible occurrence of knocking combustion significantly increase the heat transfer to the walls and might generate hot spots inside the combustion chamber. This work presents a methodology suitable to properly diagnose and control the occurrence of pre-ignition events that emanate from hot spots. The methodology is based on a control-oriented model of the ignition delay, which is compared to the actual ignition delay calculated from the real-time processing of the in-cylinder pressure trace. When the measured ignition delay becomes significantly smaller than that modeled, it means that ignition has been activated... [more]

Keywords: exponential reaching law, hydraulic turbine governing system, input/output feedback linearization, nonlinear turbine model, sliding mode control
Hydropower as renewable energy has continually expanded at a relatively high rate in the last decade. This expansion calls for more accurate scheme design in hydraulic turbine governing system (HTGS) to ensure its high efficiency. Sliding mode control (SMC) as a robust control method which is insensitive to system uncertainties and disturbances raises interest in the application in HTGS. However, the feature of highly coupled state variables reflects the nonlinear essence of HTGS and SMC studies on the related mathematical model under certain fluctuations are not satisfied. In this regard, a novel SMC design with proportional-integral-derivative manifold is firstly applied to a nonlinear HTGS with a complex conduit system. In dealing with certain fluctuations in speed and load around the rated working condition, the proposed SMC is capable of driving the system to the desired state with smooth and light responses in aspects of the key state variables. Keywords: decision-making, energy efficient refurbishment measures, residential buildings, Theory of Planned Behavior
Existing private homes in Germany and throughout Europe often are in need of energy efficient refurbishment measures (EERMs). However, these EERMs are not realized on the required level in order to achieve environment-related political targets. Therefore we investigate, based on an online survey of 1085 German owner-occupiers, the factors that differentiate two groups of single- and two-family house owners in need of EERM. Using an extended version of the Theory of Planned Behavior as a research framework, the performed logistic regression analysis shows that e.g., behavioral beliefs are significant factors for differentiating “Future-Refurbishers” from “Non-Refurbishers”. Based on our results we suggest an enhancement of practice-orientated initiatives, e.g., refurbishment workshops or best-practice presentations. By presenting the aesthetic appearance of refurbished buildings or providing knowledge, other owner-occupiers could be motivated to engage in EERM. In addition to funding pr... [more]

Keywords: cost–benefit analysis, ratepayer, rooftop PV, Thailand, utility
Driven by falling photovoltaic (PV) installation costs and potential support policies, rooftop PV is expected to expand rapidly in Thailand. As a result, the relevant stakeholders, especially utilities, have concerns about the net economic impacts of high PV adoption. Using a cost−benefit analysis, this study quantifies the net economic impacts of rooftop PV systems on three utilities and on ratepayers in Thailand by applying nine different PV adoption scenarios with various buyback rates and annual percentages of PV cost reduction. Under Thailand’s current electricity tariff structure, Thai utilities are well-protected and able to pass all costs due to PV onto the ratepayers in terms of changes in retail rates. We find that when PV adoption is low, the net economic impacts on both the utilities and retail rates are small and the impacts on each utility depend on its specific characteristics. On the other hand, when PV adoption ranges from 9−14% in energy basis, five-year retail rate i... [more]
