Arunmozhi Manimuthu, Anh Vu Le, Rajesh Elara Mohan, Prabahar Veerajagadeshwar, Nguyen Huu Khanh Nhan, Ku Ping Cheng
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: area coverage, energy saving, reconfigurable mechanism, reconfigurable system, tiling robotics
As autonomous tiling devices begin to perform floor cleaning, agriculture harvesting, surface painting tasks, with minimal or no human intervention, a new challenge arises: these devices also need to be energy efficient and be constantly aware of the energy expenditure during deployments. Typical approaches to this end are often limited to fixed morphology robots with little or no consideration for reconfiguring class of robots. The main contribution of the paper is an energy estimation scheme that allows estimating the energy consumption when a tetromino inspired reconfigurable floor tiling robot, hTetro moves from one configuration to another for completing the area covering task. To this end, the proposed model applying the Newton-Raphson algorithm in combination with Pulse width modulation (PWM)-H bridge to characterize the energy cost associated with locomotion gaits across all valid morphologies and identify optimal area coverage strategy among available options is presented. Yanbin Li, Zhen Li
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal consumption forecasting, grey relational analysis, improved gravitational search algorithm, support vector machine
The main target of the energy revolution in the new period is coal, but the proportion of coal in primary energy consumption will gradually decrease. As coal is a major producer and consumer of energy, analyzing the trend of coal demand in the future is of great significance for formulating the policy of coal development planning and driving the revolution of energy sources in China. In order to predict coal demand scientifically and accurately, firstly, the index system of influencing factors of coal demand was constructed, and the grey relational analysis method was used to select key indicators as input variables of the model. Then, the kernel function of SVM (support vector machine) was optimized by taking advantage of the fast convergence speed of GSA (gravitational search algorithm), and the memory function and boundary mutation strategy of PSO (particle swarm optimization) were introduced to improve the gravitational search algorithm, and the improved GSA (IGSA)−SVM prediction m... March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWT), linear quadratic regulator (LQR), LQR-PI control, permanent-magnet synchronous-generator (PMSG), PI control algorithm
In this paper, a new linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and proportional integral (PI) hybrid control algorithm for a permanent-magnet synchronous-generator (PMSG) horizontal-axis wind turbine was developed and simulated. The new algorithm incorporates LQR control into existing PI control structures as a feed-forward term to improve the performance of a conventional PI control. A numerical model based on MATLAB/Simulink and a commercial aero-elastic code were constructed for the target wind turbine, and the new control technique was applied to the numerical model to verify the effect through simulation. For the simulation, the performance data were compared after applying the PI, LQR, and LQR-PI control algorithms to the same wind speed conditions with and without noise in the generator speed. Also, the simulations were performed in both the transition region and the rated power region. The LQR-PI algorithm was found to reduce the standard deviation of the generator speed by more than 20... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical hierarchy process (AHP), coal mining, dozers, open-cast mining
In a continuous system of production in open-cast coal mining, in addition to the basic machinery which consists of highly productive machines (bucket-wheel excavators, bucket-chain excavators, spreaders, conveyor-belt transporters, etc.) that provide an uninterrupted exploitation of mineral ores, the usage of auxiliary machinery is also necessary. The auxiliary machinery provides the possibility of using the capacities of basic machinery adequately and timely. Further, it must be mentioned that the auxiliary machinery generates up to 20% of the total mining expenses. Dozers are the most commonly used machines. Choosing the adequate dozer of the right type and manufacturer is of great importance and can be made easier by carrying out an analysis of the existent operational-exploitative parameters. In this paper, the method of grading the operational-exploitative parameters of dozer is defined. The choice of the optimal type of dozer was conducted by using the analytical hierarchy proce... Andrew Swingler, Jordan Torrealba
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Storage, lead-acid batteries, off-grid electricity, partial state of charge, PV-genset-battery hybrid system
In this communication, the measured behaviour of a lead-acid battery bank within a stand-alone residential solar photovoltaic (PV)-genset-battery hybrid power system in Canada is presented and discussed. In order to capture rare field-based battery performance data, a newly commissioned lead-acid battery bank was equipped with a battery monitoring device capable of logging voltage, current, temperature and amp-hours every 30 s for the life of the battery. The measured data captures a severe loss of battery capacity due to a combination of short-term deep discharge and extended partial state of charge operation—conditions not unusual during winter season PV-genset-battery hybrid power system operation. Subsequent manual override of the system control set points to encourage gradual battery overcharge are shown to recover the lead-acid battery bank’s performance over the following three months. Limitations of the power conversion system’s battery management approach are discussed and a n... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chemical heat pump, gas–solid reaction, heat transformation, thermal upgrade, thermochemical reaction
Heat transformation based on reversible chemical reactions has gained significant interest due to the high achievable output temperatures. This specific type of chemical heat pump uses a reversible gas−solid reaction, with the back and forward reactions taking place at different temperatures: by running the exothermic discharge reaction at a higher temperature than the endothermic charge reaction, the released heat is thermally upgraded. In this work, we report on the experimental investigation of the hydration reaction of strontium bromide (SrBr2) with regard to its use for heat transformation in the temperature range from 180 °C to 250 °C on a 1 kg scale. The reaction temperature is set by adjusting the pressure of the gaseous reactant. In previous experimental studies, we found the macroscopic and microscopic properties of the solid bulk phase to be subject to considerable changes due to the chemical reaction-. In order to better understand how this affects the thermal discharge per... [more]

Keywords: Alternative Fuels, decarbonization, energy system modelling, low-carbon transition, NETP 2016, sustainable mobility, transport behavior
Experiencing the highest growth in emissions since 1990 and relying mainly on oil, transport is considered the most complicated sector to decarbonize. Lately, the Nordic countries have shown remarkable success in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, especially in the power and heat sector. However, when it comes to transportation, the greatest source of Nordic GHG emissions, stronger measures are needed. Relying on a rich and diversified portfolio of renewable sources and expertise, the Nordic countries could benefit from a common mitigation strategy by encompassing a larger variety of solutions and potential synergies. This article reviews studies addressing integrated energy and transport scenario analysis for the Nordic region as a whole. The studies targeted are those applying energy system models, given their extensive adoption in supporting scenario analysis. Most notable of these studies is the “Nordic Energy Technology Perspectives 2016” to which a special focus is dedicate... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy efficiency in buildings, heat allocation, heat cost allocator, heat metering, heating costs, multi-family buildings, residential sector, thermostatic radiator valve
Heat cost allocation is commonly used in existing buildings supplied by centralized sources of heating/cooling and provided with individual metering systems. However, this process is not always fair for the users, since “fairness” strongly depends on the methods established to allocate variable and fixed costs among the dwellings. That is why unrealistic cost for heating may be allocated for specific flats. However, there is a lack of evidence about procedures as to how maximum and minimum variable cost of heating may be calculated for specific flats in multifamily building for a specific heating season. This paper presents different methods for estimation of maximum and minimum variable cost of heating of flat in multifamily buildings, the use of which depends of the availability of input data for specific buildings. Evaluation of the proposed methods is made on the example of a case study multifamily building located in Poland. It was shown that the maximum variable costs of heat pur... [more]

Jenn-Jong Shieh, Kuo-Ing Hwu, Sheng-Ju Chen
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC-AC inverter, multilevel, perspective, single-phase, voltage-fed
Standing out for their remarkable benefits, such as lower voltage stress on integrated semiconductor devices, reduction in total harmonic distortion, as well as lower electromagnetic effects, multilevel inverters (MLIs) increase their share in the field of energy supply. The multilevel inverter is an interesting research topic that realizes the generation of desired output voltage waveforms composed of small voltage steps. However, many studies have put a premium on the structure, efficiency, and output of the multilevel inverter, but there are relatively few studies on the THD and practical product applications. Consequently, in this brief perspective, some puzzles for MLIs are pointed out to explore new ideas as well as to present new questions.

Keywords: battery energy storage system, electrical power quality, microgrid, photovoltaic, substation
Substation (SS) auxiliary systems (SAux) are facilities responsible for hosting the alternating (AC) and direct current (DC) busbar to serve the equipment and systems that perform the substation’s protection, control, and supervision. External and internal power supplies typically ensure the continuity of such a facility. The electricity support will be restricted to diesel emergency generators (DG) if the external power supply is unavailable due to a contingency. The DG present a slower response time and are susceptible to starting failures. Microgrids with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) paired with photovoltaic systems (PV) are presented as an innovative and reliable solution for powering the SAux. In this article, tests were carried out on the microgrid of the Edson Mororó Moura Institute of Technology (ITEMM) in Brazil to support the use of microgrids BESS/PV in the SAux of a transmission SS of the São Francisco Hydroelectric Company (Chesf). Without an external power supply... [more]

Wonjune Mah, Chang-Lak Kim
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decommissioning, nuclear power plant, spent fuel pool island (SFPI), temporary spent fuel storage pool cooling system, temporary spent nuclear fuel storage
The operating license of Kori units 3 and 4 are to be expired in 2024 and 2025. If the plants are decided to be decommissioned, the spent nuclear fuels in the spent fuel storage pool (SFP) have to be removed from the site. However, no proper storage facility is currently available in Korea. To overcome the difficulty, this study proposes application of an independent temporary SFP cooling system. It is expected to safely isolate the SFP from the plant. The case study conducted showed this concept is achievable and technically mature. Moreover, the installation cost per unit is USD 9.51 million obtained from an analogous estimating. This is much lower cost than the dry cask options. Then, system requirements and applicable design are developed. Maximum heat generation of unit 4 is estimated as 1.67 MW, through fuel characteristics categorizations and ORIGEN calculations. To remove the decay heat, installation of an indirect air-cooled method is selected by evaluating three cooling metho... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alcohol, biodiesel, CI engine, sustainable fuel, ternary blends
Issues such as rising fuel prices, fuel costs, and lowering reserves highlight the importance of research into sustainable fuels derived from biological sources. This study is focused on experiments on a CI engine using ethanol and propanol-based ternary blends. Palm biodiesel is kept constant at 40% volumetric concentration, while diesel and ethanol/propanol are varied in different batches. The results obtained with ternary blends were compared with reference fuel diesel, pure palm biodiesel, and a palm biodiesel−diesel binary blend. The ternary blends exhibit lower brake thermal efficiency and higher brake specific energy consumption than diesel and binary blends due to their lower calorific value. Despite in-fuel oxygen presence, lower brake specific oxides of nitrogen and smoke opacity were observed for engine operation with a ternary blend due to the predominant role of higher latent heat of vaporization and volatility of alcohols, but unburned hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emis... March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: China General Social Survey, quality air, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, urban living experience, willingness to pay
Currently, quality air and renewable energy are main concerns in protecting the environment. Comparing willingness to pay for quality air and renewable energy is rare in the existing literature. However, the public faces these issues simultaneously. In addition, population mobility under China’s household registration system, i.e., urban living experience, may affect the willingness to pay for environmental protection. Consequently, the difference between people’s willingness to pay for quality air and renewable energy in China is discussed. Binary logistic regression is adopted to analyze the correlation factors based on data from the China General Social Survey. The results show that willingness to pay is influenced by environmental attitudes, awareness of energy use, government responsibilities, age, household income level, and trust. The effects of urban living experience on willingness to pay weakens as age decreases. Thus, improving environmental awareness and specialized knowled... [more]

Jongwon Lee, Chi-Hyung Ahn
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: detail balance limit, multiple exciton generation, quantum yield, thermodynamic limit
Multiple exciton generation solar cells exhibit low power conversion efficiency owing to non-radiative recombination, even after the generation of numerous electron and hole pairs per incident photon. This paper elucidates the non-idealities of multiple exciton generation solar cells. Accordingly, we present mathematical approaches for determining the quantum yield to discuss the non-idealities of multiple exciton generation solar cells by adjusting the delta function. We present the use of the Gaussian distribution function to present the occupancy status of carriers at each energy state using the Dirac delta function. Further, we obtained ideal and non-ideal quantum yields by modifying the Gaussian distribution function for each energy state. On the basis of this approach, we discuss the material imperfections of multiple exciton generations by analyzing the mathematically obtained quantum yields. Then, we discuss the status of radiative recombination calculated from the ratio of rad... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: activating agents, anode, hard carbon, pyrolysis, sodium-ion batteries
Hard carbon (HC) was successfully synthesized using a bio-waste precursor from Musa acuminata fiber (MaF) as an eco-friendly option through the pyrolysis process at 500 °C. Further, it was activated using the chemical activating agents, NaOH and ZnCl2, at 900 °C, named Na−MaFDHC and Zn−MaFDHC. The MaFDHCs are employed as anode materials for emerging sodium-ion batteries (NIBs). The nitrogen (N2) adsorption and desorption studies and HRTEM images resulted that the MaFDHCs have a mesoporous nature. The surface area and pore diameter of the carbon materials are increased significantly after the treatment with activating agents, which are important factors for anodes of NIBs. The electrochemical performance of the MaFDHCs depends on the activation agent. Zn−MaFDHC with a higher surface area showed better results, yielding a charge capacity of about 114 mAh g−1 at a 1C rate.

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: consumers’ behaviour, electrical energy efficiency, electrical subsidy, Jordan energy consumption, tariff price
Many developing countries subsidise energy (petroleum fuel products, natural gas and electricity), which was reflected in an extra pressure on the national budget, and this will support inefficient use of energy. In this study, the effects of electrical energy subsidies on the total electrical energy consumption in the residential sector were examined. Data on more than 260,000 Jordanian ordinary customers were collected, and the energy consumption of more than 1000 energy-extra subsidised Irbid District Electricity Distribution Company (IDECO) staff members was recorded over a 2-year period (2017 and 2018). These two groups were compared to examine the consequences of subsidising energy on the energy consumption and the consumption behaviour in the residential sector. The analysis revealed that ordinary householders consume around 296 kWh/month, while for the subsidised group 615 kWh/month was noted. Energy consumption increased during the summer and winter months, especially in the s... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), Circular Carbon Economy (CCE), climate change, GHG, Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), Net-Zero Emissions (NZE), Saudi Green Initiative (SIG)
Combating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has become an obligation for countries that ratified the Paris Agreement. Saudi Arabia, as a member of the Paris Agreement, pledged to achieve net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060. This endeavor is challenging for all countries. This paper provides an analysis and assessment of the Saudi measures to achieve NZE by 2060. The analysis reveals that Saudi Arabia will reduce the total net emissions to 49.67 Mt of CO2eq, whereas under a business-as-usual scenario, the emissions would reach 1.724 million tons (Mt) of CO2 equivalent (CO2eq). The study reveals that sectors conducting environmental, social, and governance ratings (ESG) and those where the government is a stakeholder are on the right track and will facilitate the government’s efforts in reaching NZE. The gap in reaching NZE will be mainly due to the Saudi steel and cement industries.

Juraj Kukuruzović, Ana Matin, Mislav Kontek, Tajana Krička, Božidar Matin, Ivan Brandić, Alan Antonović
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ash, Biomass, demineralization
The increasing amount of residual waste presents several opportunities to use biomass as a renewable energy source. Agricultural biomass is a raw material with a high ash content, which can be a problem in any form of energy conversion. To obtain better quality biofuel, excess mineral matter must be removed. Demineralization is a simple form of mixing and washing biomass with various liquids to reduce ash content. Water, acetic acid, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid are common solvents used for this purpose. Ash is composed of different micro (Zn, Cu, Fe) and macro elements (Mg, Ca, K), which can have different consequences for the use of biomass for thermal energy. Different solvents have different effects on the individual elements, with inorganic acids having the greatest effect in demineralization processes, with a reduction in ash content of up to 80% for corn and about 99% for soybeans.

Keywords: Energy Storage, net-billing, net-metering, NPV, photovoltaics, self-consumption
Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have been gaining popularity on a continuous basis and the current global political situation is only accelerating energy transformation in many countries. Objectives related to environmental protection and use of RES set by different countries all over the world as well as the European Union (EU) are becoming priorities. In Poland, after years of a boom in photovoltaic (PV) installations, the Renewable Energy Sources Act has been amended, resulting in a change to the billing system for electricity produced by individual prosumers. The change in the billing method, also in pursuance to the provisions of EU laws, has contributed to the inhibition of the PV installation market for fear of energy prices and investment payback time. In this paper, by using the Net Present Value (NPV) method, three mechanisms of billing of electricity from prosumer micro-installations—based on the net-metering principle and net-billing principle (using monthly and hourly price...
