Variable Size Twin-Rotor Wind Turbine
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Savonius, shielding plates, twin-rotor, vertical wind turbine
The paper presents a new concept of a vertical axis wind turbine. The idea is focused on small wind turbines, and therefore, the dominating quality is safety. Another important necessary feature is efficient operation at small winds. This implies an application of the drag driven solution such as the Savonius rotor. The presented concept is aimed at reducing the rotor size and the cost of implementation. A new wind turbine solution, its efficiency, and functionality are described. The results of numerical simulations being a proof of the concept are reported. The simulations were followed by wind tunnel tests. Finally several prototypes were built and investigated for a longer period of time. The new wind turbine concept has undergone various testing and implementation efforts, making this idea matured, well proven and documented. A new feature, namely, the wind turbine size reduction at strong winds, or in other words, an increase in the wind turbine size at low winds is the reason wh... [more]

Design and Analysis of a Novel Converter Topology for Photovoltaic Pumps Based on Switched Reluctance Motor
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flexible battery charging, integrated converter, photovoltaic (PV) pump, switched reluctance motor (SRM)
In order to improve the performance of switched reluctance motor (SRM) systems for photovoltaic (PV) pumps, this paper introduces a new converter topology for SRM with controllable multiple power sources. Only simple switching components need to be added at the front end of the asymmetric half-bridge converter in this topology, which enables the control of multiple power sources. The new PV pump system has four operating modes, which are the PV panel driven mode, battery bank driven mode, dual-source driven mode, and battery charging mode. By adjusting the state of the front-end converter switch, the voltage tracking of PV panel can be achieved, providing a stable bus voltage for the SRM system. By controlling the battery bypass switch, the bus voltage of SRM system can be increased, thereby increasing the system power level. Simulations and experiments based on a four-phase 8/6 SRM demonstrate the effect of the novel converter proposed in this paper.

An Assessment of Wind Energy Potential in the Caspian Sea
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: capacity factor, Caspian Sea, LCOE, offshore turbines, wind speed
At this time, there are plans to develop offshore wind projects in the Caspian Sea. The aim of the present work was to estimate the possible benefits coming from such a project. As a first step, the wind profile of this region was established by considering reanalysis data coming from the ERA-Interim project, the time interval covered being between January 1999 and December 2018. According to these results, significant resources have been noticed in the northern part where the wind speed frequently reached 8 m/s, being identified also as a hot-spot south of Olya site. In the second part, the performances of some offshore wind turbines were established. These were defined by rated capacities ranging from 3 MW to 8.8 MW. The downtime period of some generators can reach 90% in the central and southern sectors, while for the capacity factor, the authors expected a maximum of 33.07% for a turbine rated at 4.2 MW. From a financial point of view, the values of the levelized cost of energy (LC... [more]

A State of Health Estimation Framework for Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Transfer Components Analysis
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: domain adaptation, extreme learning machine, state of health, transfer components analysis
As different types of lithium batteries are increasingly employed in various devices, it is crucial to predict the state of health (SOH) of lithium batteries. There are plenty of methods for SOH estimation of a lithium-ion battery. However, existing technologies often have computational complexity. Furthermore, it is difficult to use least the previous 30% of data of the battery degradation process to predict the SOH variation of the entire degradation process. To address this problem, in this paper, the SOH of the target battery is estimated based on the transfer of different battery data sets. Firstly, according to importance sampling (IS), valid features are extracted from cycles of charging voltage in both the source and target battery. Secondly, transfer component analysis (TCA) is used to map the source data set to the target data set. Moreover, an extreme learning machine (ELM) algorithm is employed to train a single hidden layer feed forward neural network (SLFN) for its fast t... [more]

Renewable Energy in the Electricity Sector and GDP per Capita in the European Union
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electricity, GDP per capita, renewable energy sources
Considering that the European Directive has imposed that at least 20% of the total energy should come from renewable energy sources (RES) by 2020 already and the specific targets for each European Union Member State, this paper attempts to assess the importance of GDP per capita in realizing these targets and also the effects of the RES share in electricity. Contrary to previous research, this paper does not consider the connection between economic growth and RES, but rather the potential connection between the share of RES in electricity and the real GDP per capita. The panel data models indicated to a positive, but very low impact of GDP per capita on the share of RES in electricity in the period of 2007−2017 in the case of the EU countries, except Luxembourg that has outlier values of GDP per capita. However, causality between the two variables was not identified. Some groups of countries were described according to these variables using cluster analysis. Future research should focu... [more]

Effect of Platform Motion on Aerodynamic Performance and Aeroelastic Behavior of Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Blades
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, elastic blade deformations, floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT), platform motion, unsteady blade element momentum theory
In the present study, a numerical framework for predicting the aerodynamic performance and the aeroelastic behavior of floating offshore wind turbine rotor blades involving platform motion was developed. For this purpose, the aerodynamic and structural analyses were conducted simultaneously in a tightly coupled manner by exchanging the information about the aerodynamic loads and the elastic blade deformations at every time step. The elastic behavior of the turbine rotor blades was described by adopting a structural model based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam. The aerodynamic loads by the rotor blades were evaluated by adopting a blade element momentum theory. The numerical simulations were conducted when the platform of the wind turbine independently moves in each of the six degrees-of-freedom directions consisting of heave, sway, surge, roll, pitch, and yaw. It was observed that flexible blades exhibit complicated vibratory behaviors when they are excited by the aerodynamic, inertia, and... [more]

Deformation Field Evolution and Failure Mechanisms of Coal−Rock Combination Based on the Digital Speckle Correlation Method
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal–-rock combination, deformation field, digital speckle correlation method (DSCM), failure mechanism, roof
The stability of a deep composite roof is a powerful guarantee for the safe and efficient production of a coal mine. The coal−rock combination, the single rock or coal bodies have different bearing capacity; thus, we can accurately obtain the deformation field evolution and failure mechanisms of the combination, which is useful in the deformation control of a composite roof. In this study, based on the digital speckle correlation method (DSCM), a uniaxial compression test was applied to coal−rock combinations with different height ratios. The results revealed that the compressive strength, elastic modulus, and secant modulus of the combination gradually decreased, while the decreasing amplitude weakened with the increase of coal height. Additionally, the strain field map of the combination had different characteristics in different stages. As the height of the coal body continuously increased, the gradient of the strain cloud and the area of local strain increase moved upwards. Moreove... [more]

Application of the Thermodynamic Cycle to Assess the Energy Efficiency of Amine-Based Absorption of Carbon Capture
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: amine-based absorption, Carbon Capture, COPCO2, regeneration heat, second-law efficiency, thermodynamic cycle
The thermodynamic cycle, as a significant tool derived from equilibrium, could provide a reasonable and rapid energy profile of complicated energy systems. Such a function could strongly promote an in-depth and direct understanding of the energy conversion mechanism of cutting-edge industrial systems, e.g., carbon capture system (CCS) However, such applications of thermodynamics theory have not been widely accepted in the carbon capture sector, which may be one of the reasons why intensive energy consumption still obstructs large-scale commercialization of CCS. In this paper, a kind of thermodynamic cycle was developed as a tool to estimate the lowest regeneration heat (Qre) of a benchmark solvent (MEA) under typical conditions. Moreover, COPCO2, a new assessment indicator, was proposed firstly for energy-efficiency performance analysis of such a kind of CCS system. In addition to regeneration heat and second-law efficiency (η2nd), the developed COPCO2 was also integrated into the exis... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bearing capacity, composite bucket foundation (CBF), fixed displacement ratio, torque load
The composite bucket foundation for offshore wind turbine bears the vertical load from not only the superstructure and the horizontal load, caused by wind and wave, but also from the torque load caused by rotating structures, such as blades. Based on layered soil foundation, the influence of the skirt height, the friction coefficient between soil and bucket foundation and the diameter of the bucket foundation on the stress of the bucket skirt under the torque load are studied in this paper. Moreover, the envelope curves of the bearing capacity of H−T and V−H−T are obtained by the fixed displacement ratio loading method. The bearing capacity characteristics of composite bucket foundation under different loading combinations are analyzed. The results show that: (1) The effect of inside soil on the bucket skirt is greater than that of the outside soil; (2) when composite loads are applied, the torque-bearing capacity decreases slowly with the increase of horizontal force, and when the hor... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: equivalent circuit model, fuzzy logic controller, sliding mode observer, state of charge
State of charge (SOC) estimation is of vital importance for the battery management system in electric vehicles. This paper proposes a new fuzzy logic sliding mode observer for SOC estimation. The second-order resistor-capacitor equivalent circuit model is used to describe the discharging/charging behavior of the battery. The exponential fitting method is applied to determine the parameters of the model. The fuzzy logic controller is introduced to improve the performance of sliding mode observer forming the fuzzy logic sliding mode observer (FLSMO). The Federal Urban Driving Schedule (FUDS), the West Virginia Suburban Driving Schedule (WUBSUB), and the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) schedule test results show that the average SOC estimation error of FLSMO algorithm is less than 1%. When the initial SOC estimation error is 20%, the FLSMO algorithm can converge to 3% error boundary within 2400 s. Impact on Combustion and Emissions of Jet Fuel as Additive in Diesel Engine Fueled with Blends of Petrol Diesel, Renewable Diesel and Waste Cooking Oil Biodiesel
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, diesel engine, emissions, jet fuel, renewable diesel, waste cooking oil
This study is devoted to investigating the potential use of Jet A in blend along with biodiesel from waste cooking oil, petrol diesel, and renewable diesel. Biodiesel use allows for reducing carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (HC), and soot due to the oxygen contained in the fuel. The drawbacks in its use are related to the low volatility and high viscosity of vegetable oil that cause difficulties in fuel atomization and in its mixing with air. Moreover, an increased amount of NOx emission was observed. The aim of the experimentation is to evaluate the ability of Jet A of enhancing the combustion process and pollutant emissions of a diesel engine, thus overcoming the difficulties in biodiesel usage (high viscosity, poor cold weather performance, compatibility with diesel engine equipment) and then increasing the renewable fuel percentage in the fuel. Testing was carried out on a small displacement common rail diesel engine. Hardware and ECU setting were not modified in order t... [more]

Selection of the most appropriate contractor for the installation of solar panels is essential to maximizing the benefit of this renewable, sustainable energy source. Solar energy is one of the 100% renewable energy sources, but implementation may not be very simple and cost-effective. A key phase in the implementation of renewable energy is the evaluation of contractors for the installation of solar panels, which is addressed as a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. A new hybrid method is proposed that combines the stepwise weight analysis ratio assessment (SWARA) and full consistent method (FUCOM) weights that are represented as grey numbers used with traditional grey relational analysis (GRA) and evaluation based on distance from average solution (EDAS) methods. The ranking of contractors by both methods is the same, which confirmed the results presented in this research. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biochar, direct carbon fuel cell, post-treatment, power density, pre-treatment, pyrolysis
The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) is an emerging technology for energy production. The application of biomass in DCFCs will be a major transition from the use of coal to generate energy. However, the relationship between biomass or biochar composition and the electrochemical performance of a DCFC is yet to be studied. The performance of a DCFC using fuel sources derived from woody and non-woody biomass were compared in this study. The effect of pyrolysis temperature ranges from 550 °C to 850 °C on the preparation of biochar from rubber wood (RW) and rice husk (RH) were evaluated for power generation from DCFCs. In addition, the effect of applying chemical pre-treatment and post-treatment on biochar were further investigated for DCFC performance. In general, the power density derived from rubber wood biochar is significantly higher (2.21 mW cm−2) compared to rice husk biochar (0.07 mW cm−2). This might be due to the presence of an oxygen functional group, higher fixed carbon content, a... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: commercial turbine selection, Genetic Algorithm, hub height variation, Optimization, upgrade, wind farm layout
The problem of optimally increasing the size of existing wind farms has not been investigated in the literature. In this paper, a proposed wind farm layout upgrade by adding different (in type and/or hub height) commercial turbines to an existing farm is introduced and optimized. Three proposed upgraded layouts are considered: internal grid, external grid, and external unstructured. A simple field-based model is implemented and both offshore and onshore conditions are considered. A genetic algorithm is used for the optimization. The trade-off range between energy production and cost of energy is investigated by considering three objective functions, individually: (1) annual energy production; (2) cost of added energy; and (3) cost of total energy. The proposed upgraded layouts are determined for the Horns Rev 1 offshore wind farm. The results showed... [more]

Increasing the Competitiveness of Tidal Systems by Means of the Improvement of Installation and Maintenance Maneuvers in First Generation Tidal Energy Converters—An Economic Argumentation
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economic-financial viability, installation and maintenance maneuvers, life-cycle costs, ocean energy, offshore renewable energy, tidal energy converters
The most important technological advances in tidal systems are currently taking place in first generation tidal energy converters (TECs), which are installed in areas in which the depth does not exceed 40 m. Some of these devices are fixed to the seabed and it is, therefore, necessary to have special high performance ships to transport them from the base port to the tidal farm and to subsequently recover the main units of these devices. These ships are very costly, thus making the installation costs very high and, in some cases, probably unfeasible. According to what has occurred to date, the costs of the installation and maintenance procedures depend, to a great extent, on the reliability and accessibility of the devices. One of the possible solutions as regards increasing system performance and decreasing the costs of the installation and maintenance procedures is the definition of automated maneuvers, which will consequently influence: (i) an increase in the competitiveness of these... Real Levelized Cost of Energy with Indirect Costs and Market Value of Variable Renewables: A Study of the Korean Power Market
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: indirect costs, market value, real LCOE, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, social welfare
A levelized cost of energy (LCOE) is a methodology for comparing power generation costs in the transition to renewable energy (RE). However, the major limitation of evaluating RE based on the LCOE is that it does not consider indirect costs, such as the environmental and curtailment effect. This paper proposes the real LCOE (rLCOE) approach that accounts for indirect and direct generation costs. The mathematical approach to estimating indirect costs is derived from economic theory. The indirect effects, which quantify all benefits generated due to RE, is related to the variability of the share RE in the energy generation mix. The rLCOE enhances the accuracy of the economic comparison of power generation costs and the derivation of the optimal quantities of RE because external effects are incorporated into the LCOE principles. This approach has taken into account electricity demand, fuel prices, and environmental costs for each energy source to adequately compare generation costs. Simul... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Bi-directional conversion, Combined electro-gas bidirectional conversion system (CEGBCS), Combined heat and power (CHP), power to gas (P2G), Wind power curtailments
The extensive use of wind power can not only reduce dependence on fossil fuels, but also reduce emissions of polluted gases. However, large-scale wind power curtailments often occur in northeast China during the heat supply season, due to the fact that most of electrical demand is covered by the electrical power of the combined heat and power (CHP) during the off-peak hours. At present, for northeast China with heating demand, most of the research only focuses on how to accommodate more wind power on the spot by using one-directional conversion of the electric and thermal energy. But it is still difficult to realize the bi-directional conversion between the electro-gas or electro-thermal energy. In this paper, a combined electro-gas bi-directional conversion system (CEGBCS) is established by adding the power to gas (P2G), fuel cell and heat storage device in CHP system. This CEGBCS can not only realize bi-directional conversion of the electricity and gas, but also decouple the two oper... [more]

Keywords: renewable energies, wind turbine emulator, wind turbine energy systems
This paper proposes a new on-site technique for the experimental characterization of small wind systems by emulating the behavior of a wind tunnel facility. Due to the high cost and complexity of these facilities, many manufacturers of small wind systems do not have a well knowledge of the characteristic λ - C p curve of their turbines. Therefore, power electronics converters connected to the wind generator are usually programmed with speed/power control curves that do not optimize the power generation. The characteristic λ - C p curves obtained through the proposed method will help manufacturers to obtain optimized speed/power control curves. In addition, a low cost small wind emulator has been designed. Programmed with the experimental λ - C p curve, it can validate, improve, and develop new control algorithms to maximize the energy generation. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: borehole stability, ionic stabilizer, Niutitang formation, shale drilling fluid, shale gas reservoir
The shale of the lower Cambrian Niutitang formation in northwestern Hunan is an ideal reservoir for shale gas. There is a close connection between borehole stability and drilling fluid in shale gas drilling. Ionic stabilizer is a new type of stratum consolidation agent that inhibits the hydration expansion of clay minerals and improves mechanical strength of the borehole. The traditional idea of pore wall protection is to use drilling fluid additives to prevent shale from interacting with water. However, ionic stabilizer can change the hydrophilic of clay minerals in shale, making the particles become hydrophobic and dense, therefore, the formation stability can be enhanced simultaneously. The material used in this paper is different from the normal ionic stabilizer, some chemical bonds that have been changed in the new material called enhanced normality ionic (ENI) stabilizer. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamic damping, aeroelasticity, forced oscillations method, wind tunnel tests, wind turbines
The development of wind turbine technology has led to higher and larger wind turbines with a higher sensitivity to dynamic effects. One of these effects is the aerodynamic damping, which introduces favorable damping forces in oscillating wind turbines. These forces play an important role in the turbine lifetime, but have not yet been studied systematically in detail. Consequently, this paper studies the plausibility of determining the aerodynamic damping of wind turbines systematically through wind tunnel experiments using the forced oscillation method. To this end, a 1:150 scale model of a prototype wind turbine has been fabricated considering Reynolds number effects on the blades through XFOIL calculations and wind tunnel measurements of airfoil 2D-section models. The resulting tower and wind turbine models have been tested for different operation states. Efforts to develop sustainable buildings are progressing but are still not keeping pace with the growing building sector and the rising demand for energy. Analyzing the energy use pattern of buildings and planning for energy conservation in existing buildings are essential. In this research, we propose a method to analyze the energy use pattern in a building using the K-means clustering method. Initial centroids in K-means clustering are chosen randomly so that the clustering result changes every time. This instability is removed in the proposed method by the selection of initial centroids using a percentile method based on empirical cumulative distribution. The results from the proposed method have better accuracy, and the internal cohesion and separation between clusters are better than the random initialization method. Analyzing yearly electrici...
